Richard Paterson has been working in the whisky industry for the past 57 years, with more than half a century of his career spent with Whyte & Mackay Distillers. Ich weiß nicht, wie viele Jahre ich jetzt schon in der Whisky-Szene tätig bin…es sind viele. Und dennoch: selbst, wenn man ständig mit den diversen Malt Whisky-Marken Schottlands zu tun hat…ein paar landen da häufiger auf dem Schirm als andere. Eine die dabei lange Zeit zu kurz kam, war Fettercairn. Wobei zugegeben….der Dachkonzern von Fettercairn hatte lange Jahre kaum Ambitionen deren Malts als Single Malts zu vermarkten. Klar gab es hie und da eine Abfüllung, die Masse an Malts der Fettercairn-Destillerie landete aber in Blended Whiskys. Zwar ist dies nach wie vor der Fall, seit 2018 hat die Destillerie aber ein Portfolio aus Single Malts….und die sind wirklich die Wucht. Anlässlich der Veröffentlichung ihres neuesten Single Malts, den Fettercairn 16 Jahre, habe ich mich mit Mario Kappes unterhalten. Mario ist Global Advocacy & Education Manager beim Importeur Borco. Sie bringen die Malts von Fettercairn nach Deutschland. Im Interview verrät er dir, warum dieser Whisky eine so intensive Schokoladen und Frucht-Note besitzt. "Se sentir d’un pays auquel ne nous rattache ni la terre, ni l’hérédité, pas la moindre goutte de sang… Proche par les seules voies du cœur, liens invisibles qu’on aura mis quarante années à dénouer… Je suis de l’Ecosse comme on est d’une autre destinée. Les Ecossais nous aiment. Ce n’est pas si fréquent. Cela remonte aux Stuart, à des guerres anciennes qu’ils gardent en mémoire, quand nous les avons oubliées. Qu’on ne soit pas d’Ecosse comme on est d’Angleterre me semble une évidence. Moins du nationalisme, qu’une solide « Tradition ». Si j’étais svelte, je m’offrirais cette coquetterie : le kilt, et tous les accessoires, flashes, chaussettes en laine, épingle, ceinture celtique. Pour comme disait Boris Vian, « ne pas crever sans avoir porté une robe sur les Grands Boulevards ». D’Édimbourg ma fille m’a ramené une large écharpe de tartan vert et bleu, merveille d’élégance. Dieu fasse que je ne la perde jamais, rien ne me peinerait davantage. Se joindre aux chœurs de Murrayfield, entonner Flowers of Scotland… La moindre cornemuse me donne le frisson. Et me bouleverse comme jamais la voix rocailleuse de Rod Stewart, soudain si douce pour Auld Lang Syne. "And surely you will buy your cup / And surely I'll buy mine / And we'll take a cup o'kindness yet / For auld lang syne". Me ravissent bien sûr les noms des Single Malts, surtout les gaëliques, imprononçables : « Auchroisk », « Bruichladdich », « Bunnahabhain », « Usquaebeach ». En posséder des dizaines, partir avec de vrais amis en voyages de recherche : comparer - sans modération aucune - les arômes, saveurs, subtilités… sans y laisser jamais le peu de santé qui reste. Pour fuir le confinement, je m’offre un dram de ce subtil Fettercairn qu’un ami cher m’offrit pour mon anniversaire. Et j’avance dans la Trilogie Ecossaise de Peter May. Trois enquêtes policières marquées d’un humanisme rude, sauvage comme une odeur de tourbe, sur une île du nord-ouest qui l’est tout autant. Je n’y survivrais pas deux semaines ! Mais cela me renvoie vers Aout 2001. Deux intenses émotions. Nous sommes sans le savoir tout proche du 11 septembre, renaissance de ce monde inhumain qui nous voit ces jours-ci confinés. Et nous revenons d’Ecosse, chaque journée là-bas vécue comme un voyage aux sources de l’imagination dont Inverness serait le climax. Depuis l’âge de huit ans, je rêvais du Loch Ness. Un article de France-Soir m’apprenait qu’il s’y cachait peut-être un animal mystérieux, - mammifère ou poisson, qui pouvait dire-, un monstre hantant les eaux du Lac depuis des millénaires, à moins qu’à plusieurs ils aient fondé une dynastie échappant à l’insatiable besoin des hommes de toujours tout savoir, à défaut de comprendre. L’irruption de Nessie fut plus une bénédiction, un bonheur, et la revanche d’un imaginaire qui depuis ma naissance m’était confisqué. Comment dire le manque qu’aura signifié dans ma vie l’interdiction formelle de croire au Père Noel ; si ridicule que cela sonne dans la bouche d’un sexagénaire, cela m’a marqué. A jamais. Le Père Noel, « ce mensonge qu’on raconte aux enfants pour les manipuler », jurait la mère. Ce qui était pernicieux, pervers, c’était m’instrumentaliser pour affirmer son propre rêve de toute-puissance, et me voler ma place d’enfant en me déguisant en surdoué à qui on ne la fait pas. Pour que l’Ecosse lointaine conserve sa magie, il fallait que le rêve ne fût pas trop vite calmé par le voyage. Je ne l’ai fait qu’à 43 ans, et n’y suis pas depuis retourné. Mais cela se fera : quand bien même elle ne sera qu’un piège à touristes en mal de mystère et d’ésotérisme désuet, j’irai visiter la Chapelle Roselyn. Car je suis un Ecossais. Reconnu comme tel par mes Pairs, et par eux Accepté. Je suis de l’Ecosse comme on est d’une victoire de l’imaginaire et du symbole, sur le Réel qui étouffe. Construction workers are racing the clock to complete work at Louisville's Frazier History Museum by the end of this month, when the new "Spirit of Kentucky" Bourbon history exhibit and the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Welcome Center are scheduled to open. Both represent a multi-million dollar investment in Bourbon tourism on Louisville's Whiskey Row, and we'll take a "hard hat" tour with the Frazier's Andy Treinen on WhiskyCast In-Depth.
