Liv was living in Portland, Oregon in the summer of 2020 during the demonstrations sparked by the murder of George Floyd, in which tear gas was used against protesters daily. We talk with Liv about how her period has changed, the importance of cases like this setting a precedent, and - of course - we cover some new crazy questions that will definitely make you chuckle. We revisit a conversation we first aired in April 2023 which was the first installment of our series on people’s professions. We’ll learn what it takes to do different kinds of jobs and how these professions change us. David Beer is Portland’s Squeezebox Surgeon. He has studied the inner workings of accordions in Italy and at A World of Accordions Museum in Wisconsin. He operates on all different kinds of free reed instruments. He shares with us how he got into this business and gives us an inside look of how accordions work and what it takes to get them singing again.

If you’ve seen live music in Portland over the last couple of decades there’s a decent chance you’ve seen Jenny Conlee on the accordion or keyboard. She may be best known for her work with The Decemberists, with whom she’s played for the last 23 years. She has also played with Casey Neill and the Norway Rats, Jerry Joseph, Little Sue, The Minus Five, Stephanie Schneidermanor Ashley Flynn. We spoke with Conlee in April 2023 for the release of her solo album, “Tides: Pieces for Accordion and Piano.” Some of the original songs were inspired by her time on the southern Washington coast. She joined us in the studio to tell us more about “Tides” and played a few songs on accordion.

San Francisco-based artist Philip Zimmerman has exhibited in San Francisco, Portland, and New York City over the past thirty years. Known for his sculptural work, Philip's pieces explore themes of death, beauty, and symbolism through intricate assemblage. His craftsmanship has been compared to that of Renaissance painters, noted for its exceptional detail and technical skill. Philip also made a film about Kenneth Anger check it out!

In this episode, Seth Mehr, MD joins to share his expertise on safety planning prior to a patient undergoing psilocybin therapy. After a 20 year career as an Emergency Medicine physician, Seth founded Cascade Psychedelic Medicine in 2021, treating clients with depression, anxiety and PTSD with psychedelic ketamine therapy. He also serves as the Health & Safety Director and a state licensed psilocybin facilitator at the Innertrek service center in Portland, Oregon. In this conversation, Dr. Mehr outlines key risk categories for psilocybin therapy: medical conditions, medication interactions, and mental health history. He emphasizes the importance of individualized safety planning over binary yes/no decisions. Dr. Mehr discusses specific considerations such as cardiovascular issues, diabetes, serotonergic medications, substance use disorders, suicidal ideation, and family history of psychosis. The conversation also covers strategies for mitigating risk, including delaying treatment, contingency plans, improving support systems, and ensuring informed consent.
