“Go explore and find your way back to your own heart, because you can do it.” - Dom FarnanDom Farnan joins Scott Mason on this episode of Webdelics to discuss her journey from self-described “toxic boss” to compassionate, conscious leader. Through the use of plant medicines like psilocybin and ayahuasca coupled with intensive personal development work, Dom found the keys to unlocking her reactive patterns and hardcore outer shell, and transformed how she leads others and how she relates to herself. Now the CEO of a successful recruiting firm and passionate advocate for conscious business practices, Dom opens up about internal shadows, triggers and wounds that can compel even good-hearted leaders to resort to toxic behaviors. She also shares advice for those curious about how plant medicine combined with self-work can uncover more heart-centered, authentic ways of leading.Dom Farnan is a dynamic leader with over two decades of experience in high-growth environments. As the founder of DotConnect, she brings radical change to the talent industry through mindfulness and compassion. She uses a holistic approach to connect talented individuals with dynamic companies. Her empowered leadership propelled DotConnect to $3M in its first year and earned her a spot on the Inc5000 list in 2022. Highlights from the conversation:"There have been times in my life in which I have practically defined the term toxic," Scott shares. He and Dom explore what it means to be toxic in the workplace and interpersonal situations. You may exhibit toxic behavior at times, but that does not necessarily define you as a person. Rather than labeling yourself, it's important to recognize toxic behaviors you may exhibit due to triggers or lack of self-awareness. Dom reflects on her past as a toxic boss, describing her lack of awareness and the transformative journey she undertook. "How it showed up for me was a complete lack of awareness around how the language I chose to use with my team …manifesting in this form of micromanagement, distrust, control and very much command and control style of leadership," she says.“When I started to commit to my personal development work,” Dom tells Scott, “then I started getting a fresh perspective … maybe it's not everybody else, maybe it's me. … So it was a tough realization, but it also gave me something to anchor me. Like, I'm not going to go sit and try and change a bunch of people. I'm going to focus on my journey and what I need to do.” The work of personal evolution never truly ends. While Dom and Scott hope that the “psychedelic renaissance” will “penetrate corporate America”, the likelihood of this happening is low for many reasons. It is easy to conform to the "avatar" or persona demanded by corporate culture and strict hierarchies. Psychedelics can help strip away those hardened layers to reconnect with your true essence. Before her first ayahuasca journey, Dom mentally prepared by pushing herself to personal growth edges, so she could handle what the medicine revealed. "I knew that no matter what was shown to me in my journey I could and would handle it and be able to face off with it,” she says.Dom explains how returning with more lightness and self-love positively impacted her team culture. This positive culture shift also correlated with tremendous business growth during an uncertain time. Her journey clearly had ripple effects.“I was the hardest of all hard people out there and I'm still not fully there, but I've really made such significant progress and so I just want to inspire people to tap into your own power and take control and responsibility and go do it. Go explore and find your way back to your own heart, because you can do it,” Dom tells listeners. In today's episode, I'll be talking about 7 (or so) qualities of being a better boss and leader. Whether you work alone or have a large team (or just a few people working with you), now's a great time to get your leadership game in place. Being a boss is more than being a visionary who has everyone else "do the work." We go into the following qualities: Don't blame people on your audience or publicly. Let people do their jobs. DO NOT do community looms and expect everyone to follow along with your rattling of ideas/thoughts and half-thought-out projects. Clarify people's tasks/roles and stick to them. Don't hire close friends unless there's a clear understanding of the end. Respect over Passive Aggressive Disrespect. Stop making everything personal. Be Approachable. Check in. Make sure to check out our Monday Refocus sessions - a quick episode to get your inspired, motivated, and re-focused for the week ahead! You'll also get invited to a free refocus session with me!

Henry Engelhardt is the Co-Founder and former CEO of Admiral Group. They're one of Britain's most valuable companies – currently valued at over £7 billion – and also the only FTSE 100 company in Wales. Chances are, you've used one of their many brands at some point: Admiral Insurance, Bell Insurance, Elephant Insurance, Diamond Insurance, Veygo Insurance… if you've ever purchased insurance, basically. Or even if you've just run a search on Confused.com or Compare.com. In fact, they launched the UK's first ever search comparison site. Henry is full of stories and lessons. Not only was he headhunted to found Admiral, but he ultimately had to fight to keep everything that was owed to him once he made the company what it is. His first book, Think Lead Succeed: The Admiral Way, was released in January 2021 and now, he's back with a follow up: Be a Better Boss: Learn to build great teams and lead any organization to success. We speak about what it really means to be a better boss and how to avoid falling into a leadership style of hypocrisy to how all of life's experiences offer opportunities to learn. Henry has always been very open about Admiral's innovations - the one thing he can't understand is why none of their competitors ever try to copy them. Durham's first sweet hub has landed in historic East Durham. Stacey Ramos is the founder of Bull City Sweet Shoppe, and the lead curator of the confections that are featured in her shop form herself and other businesses in the area. In getting a brick and mortar location, she had to weigh so many questions – When should we think about hiring? Which businesses fit our model? What is the cost of doing business in a physical location? All of those questions are centered in her belief that whether you're a boss or an employee, you're life shouldn't revolve around work. Stacey knew from the age of 15 that she wanted to be an entrepreneur, and while her path wasn't linear, she has a wealth of experiences that have contributed to her current success. In this episode, she's candid about her struggles, how she learned what she didn't want to embody as a boss, and how lifelong learning is integral to her success (and anyone's success) as an entrepreneur. Melissa Nightingale is an internationally recognized expert on management and the modern workplace. She's the co-founder and partner at Raw Signal Group and has helped thousands of bosses worldwide show up with more confidence and competence in how they lead. Previously, she spent 20 years working in tech and held executive roles that spanned marketing, customer success, community, and growth. Melissa is also the author of two books: Unmanageable: Leadership Lessons from an Impossible Year and How F*cked Up Is Your Management? An Uncomfortable Conversation About Modern Leadership. When employees aren't happy at work, it's usually because of their boss, but many bosses lack the skills to manage a team. And fun fact, it's likely that if your boss is not happy with you, the odds are their boss is equally unhappy with them. In this episode, we dive deeeeeeep into management and the big mistakes bosses make, starting with identifying the actual job of being a manager. Spoiler alert: it's not necessarily what you think. We analyze the difference between being internally promoted as a manager versus coming from an external role, what should happen within the first 90 days, and how the dynamic changes when you suddenly oversee colleagues that used to be peers. We discuss how introverts and extroverts differ in management and how to make sure that people know your worth no matter how you identify. Melissa advises how to build trust with a new team, particularly in a remote setting, delegate appropriately, and establish working guardrails for your direct reports and work processes. This whole episode is a master's degree in management, no matter what you do or who you do it for.

In this episode of Let Go & Lead, Maril and renowned author and leadership coach Marshall Goldsmith continue their discussion about Marshall's book, The Earned Life. In this episode, their focus turns to leadership. They discuss the five key factors about leading today, how leaders can productively disagree; why when you're leading knowledge workers, you can't lead by telling; and the value of asking — today — what will matter most to your 95-year-old self. Across Marshall's insights and anecdotes, the conversation returns repeatedly to the importance of maintaining perspective, trusting the process, telling the truth, and protecting your peace. In this episode of Let Go & Lead, renowned author and leadership coach Marshall Goldsmith talks with Maril about the hard work of becoming a better leader — work that is, in his words, “incredibly easy to understand and difficult to do.” Across this wide-ranging conversation, Marshall and Maril touch on cognitive dissonance theory, and the “superstition trap” that leaders often fall into. Marshall introduces the idea of happiness as a product of alignment between aspirations, ambitions and day-to-day actions; and the deep mindset shift to go from being a high individual achiever to an effective leader of an organization. Harness Your Digital Empathy and Learn Skills to Be a Better Boss, Employee, and Colleague in a Virtual or Hybrid Office How do you manage a poor performer over Zoom? How do you casually deliver positive feedback via Slack? What's the most professional use of a gif? Two things are certain with the shift in office structure: First, we will never go back to “the way things were.” Second, we all must learn to live in a virtual workplace. If we are managers, that means we also need to know how to communicate with, motivate, and coach virtual teams. In the words of Dale Carnegie, how do you “win friends and influence people” in a virtual office? How to Win Friends and Manage Remotely shares real-life examples, scientifically proven ideas, and distillations of tried-and-true business tenets, including why expressing empathy is the most important factor in managing and working with others—all mapped to a new virtual-first office. McKenna's global marketing career has spanned the spectrum of start-ups to corporates, exposing her to successful remote, in-person, and mixed teams. Her own management experience, leading teams around the world, has provided the foundation for her speaking and coaching, but she's built a structured approach to this new world of remote-first work with deep dives into research and theory from psychologists, great business minds, and the social sciences. She combines well respected and applicable theories of management and leadership with practical solutions for a new normal of workers out of the office, either some of the time or all of the time. McKenna's approach starts with strategic planning and a commitment to frameworks, but cumulates with concrete ideas for more effective virtual leadership, allowing leaders to use their own intuition and judgement more wisely. As Vice-Dean and Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at London Business School, Julian Birkinshaw is a world-renowned figure in the world of management. With decades of experience studying organisational innovation, corporate entrepreneurship and strategic leadership, he is a perfect guide to the business landscape of today – one marked by disruption, ‘discontinuous innovation' and existential debates from digital technology to the very purpose of the firm itself. Beyond the academy, Julian is also a popular author, speaker and executive mentor across the world of business. When we say he's a big deal, we mean it – he makes regular appearances in the “Thinker's Fifty” and has received widespread acclaim for books such as Rethinking Management, Becoming a Better Boss, and Fast/Forward. As well as his own ideas on ‘organisational ambidexterity' and ‘adhocracy' in the face of climate change, we also took a hard look at rational strategic planning, remote working, the Great Resignation, and the very future of shareholder capitalism itself. What's in this episode? Professor Birkinshaw's work arbitraging business and academia (yes, in both directions!) How to find – and sculpt - big ideas that truly resonate with leaders on the ground Disruption as the key framework to understand our times… …and why the secret to surviving it might just be to following the ‘dancing elephants' Digital technology as a grand experiment for hierarchical authority The ‘grey rhino' that is climate change: a greater or lesser challenge than COVID for adaptive firms? Will Big Oil cope better in Europe or the US? His view on the purpose vs. profits debate – and the Unilever story we can't stop talking about Where he would head out into the world, as a purpose-first MBA graduating today Motivation, micromanagement and the Great Resignation Organisational ambidexterity – what it is and why it matters Thinking through global climate institutions as ‘adhocracies' "…take the Fortune 500 from last year and guess how many of that Fortune 500 did not exist in any form 25 years ago at the beginning of the Internet revolution. And most people, when I ask that question, they say, oh, maybe it was 100 or 200. Some people say maybe it was 300….Only 17 of the Fortune 500 are completely new. And of course, it's Facebook. It's it's Amazon, it's Google. It's Netflix. I mean, Tesla, you can name half of those even without thinking about it.…Most people fixate on the world's being disrupted…" "…You've got to be resilient to very short term shocks covered in a global financial financial crisis where the effect is felt within weeks. You've got to be resilient to the stuff which takes, you know, months, If not years to work through. And certainly digitization is one… and then you've got to be resilient to the things which take decades to work their way through, which, of course, is climate change. …And and we sometimes call the first one a black swan event… the thing that you kind of didn't foresee. And then suddenly it's there and and you think, oh, my gosh, why didn't we think of that? Then you've got the other end. You've got climate change, which sometimes is called a gray rhino. And the metaphor there is, this thing is coming at you, it's coming at you. You can see it a long way off. No one needs to predict this. It's happening. And yet, because it's a long way off for a long time, you actually just sort of, you know, say, yeah, I can see it's coming… …And then and then suddenly you've actually got to act…climate change is in some ways the hardest. North Logan Mayor Lyndsay Peterson -- 8 Ways to Be a Better Boss (of your elected officials)
Book 13. How to be a better boss? WTF you may ask? So as things go in business we need to face a few facts. Sometimes things do not go according to plan. In fact most of the time things will challenge us and put us off the track we thought we would go on. Such is the case when it comes to management and the staff. Have you ever wondered what you should do and how you should approach things? While this is not a self-help book, it is an in-your-face type of HR manual that one can learn from. I don't know why certain people who think they are leaders are actually dictators or just dicks. Actually do know why, the question is how come they do not know that they are dicks? How to not be a dick? Yes, that is what the main idea of this book is. A way to tell a boss that they are wrong. A way to educate the so-called leaders that they are dictators rather than a person to look to for leadership. There is a huge difference between one and another. You cannot push and push without getting pushback. Eventually, something will break. Most likely it will be the valuable employee that will toss in the towel and go tell you f-yourself and walks off. This leaves a hole that needs to be plugged in time and time again as your trained staff takes off. Working for a company like Google is a dream for many. Yet at one point you must ask yourself. Is it worth it? Now that is not to say that one cannot learn from a demanding boss. But working for an asshole of a boss is different. Are you the asshole? That is what this book is about. It is rather simple. It is a short book and more like a guide. It is a short read to reflect on yourself to see if you are an asshole. You may or may not be. You may discover that you are on the verge of becoming one. Maybe you just became one and you can turn back and make a good leader out of yourself. Ah, yes... That is the part of the book I want you to pick up on. Are you the asshole that everyone hates? Discover for yourself in the privacy of your own home and see if you can make a change. Be a leader, and help your staff and HR to create better employees. That is your job. You are the coach of a team and your job is to put the best team on the field. Are you up for the challenge? The back of the book. Are you struggling to make sense of it all at the workplace? What HR does not or cannot tell you... This is a no-nonsense approach guide to creating good employees will help. From playing the blame game to simple team building, this short but comprehensive guide will get you on your way to seeing through and past the office politics. Because most likely, it's not your fault. Short and to the point, is the point. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/zsolt-zsemba/message
Let's do ourselves a favor and stay away from the hustle and grind hashtags on instagram. That's my first step: clearing the timeline. Why? It's time to clear the timeline of all of the the productivity based self worth. Today, I talk about why you need to work less to be a better boss.
What are different ways you can communicate in a more effective way? And how can you ensure that, as a business owner, your team members feel valued, and instill a great communication mentality in your company? Co-hosts Hannah Robinson and Melissa Honan discuss how to communicate more effectively as a business owner in different contexts – including with people you don't really like. [0:44] Hannah and Melissa – who have been working with a communication consultant for almost two years now – find the topic of this episode to be one of their favorites. [2:14] Melissa believes that the art of communication is something we all constantly work on and have room for improvement for it. [2:59] Hannah breaks down the four main types of communication: verbal, non-verbal, written, and visual. [4:52] The co-hosts both admit to struggling with non-verbal communication. [7:31] For Melissa, communicating effectively and respectfully are both equally important. [7:56] Hannah sees professionalism as key. Whether you're listening to someone, writing something for them or similar, you need to remember that you're going to be working with these people and you should act, behave, and communicate accordingly. [9:44] For written communication, both Hannah and Melissa recommend you take a look at Grammarly. [11:52] When it comes to communicating with her team members, Melissa typically relies on Slack. However, for delegating a task, she's open to the other person using whichever platform, tool, or app they're comfortable using the most. [13:10] Hannah believes that asking questions and communicating your goals, as well as your boundaries and expectations, could help avoid miscommunication. [15:59] Melissa likes to learn what other people's goals and boundaries are. She also stresses the importance of asking about these boundaries. [18:12] Hannah shares what she believes workplaces, business owners, and bosses should focus on to create a happy work environment. [21:42] Melissa throws remote working into the mix and adds how to address the issues at hand in a remote work environment. [24:43] There are four horsemen, and in his study, these are the things that Gottman identified to understand whether a marriage will work: criticism, defensiveness, contempt, and stonewalling. [25:23] Co-hosts Hannah and Melissa touch upon the importance of trying to focus on communicating and working harmoniously with someone you really don't like. [30:20] When trying to communicate with a remote team, Melissa thinks it's important to overly communicate in a positive manner. Mentioned in this episode: Grammarly Slack ILB episode 23 - How to Be a Better Boss and Create a Company Culture Your Employees Will Love John Gottman's Four Horsemen success@ilovebookkeeping.com
In this episode, co-hosts Hannah Robinson and Melissa Honan discuss how to be a better boss – why you should look at your past “horrible bosses,” and what to consider and do to create a company culture your employees will love and that increases their retention. [0:45] Hannah sees this episode being perfect for those looking to expand their practice, as well as for those who already have done or want to do it down the road. [1:26] Melissa shares something she struggles with: she doesn't like to think of herself as or being called “the boss.” She also warns that if you run a company and think that you'll just be “one of the guys,” you're mistaken. You're the boss and are going to be seen and treated as such. [2:25] For Hannah, having the boss' personality, in the sense of being naturally drawn to take charge of a project, is something that can be seen already from childhood – it was like this for her. Not everyone has that type of personality, though. [3:04] Thinking about the kind of boss you'd want to have as an employee is something you should evaluate when becoming someone's boss, says Hannah. [3:59] Melissa advises new business owners to think about the worst boss they ever had and do their best not to become that kind of a boss. Then, think about the best boss or bosses you've ever had and what made them good bosses. [7:20] Hannah sees being open to hearing other ideas and opinions as one of the hallmarks of being a great boss. That's a difficult thing to do, however, says Melissa. She recommends creating an environment where you aren't afraid to “look like an idiot” and encourage your employees to feel and do the same. [8:55] Hannah believes that having a heart to heart with employees – about their goals and finding ways to help them get there and check in – is an excellent way to build trust with your employees. [10:02] For Melissa, everyone just wants to be heard, so it's important to really be listening as a boss. She discusses the benefits of doing that both with your employees, as well as with your sales conversations. [12:25] Hannah and Melissa talk about the fact that there are 9 different types of motivations – and why it's important to remember this as a boss. [16:53] Melissa would like to hear from you: what motivates you? [17:15] The co-hosts touch upon fear-based motivation and why some people may be relying on that. [19:45] Hannah shares her thoughts on the company culture at Bookkeepers.com. [21:36] Melissa goes over what she thinks is key in being a better boss and creating a company culture that values your employees. Julian Birkinshaw is a Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the London Business School. He has been on the faculty for 23 years, where he is also the Academic Director of the Insitute of Entrepreneurship and Private Capital. Birkinshaw is a Fellow of the British Academy, the Academy of Social Sciences, and the Academy of International Business. Birkinshaw is a recognized expert in innovation, entrepreneurship, and renewal in large corporations. He has written 15 books, including Fast/Forward and Becoming a Better Boss. He's also published over 90 articles in journals such as the Harvard Business Review, MIT Sloan Management Review, and the Strategic Management Journal. In this episode: As the demand for digital intensifies, companies are feeling pressure to quickly digitize every facet of their strategy. This begs the question: is the “transform or die” mentality the key to success? When it comes to digital transformation, how do you separate strategic need from hype and salesmanship? Professor Julian Birkinshaw, an expert in innovation, strategy, and entrepreneurship, is looking beyond the headlines and using data to drive insight and answer the question: “How digital do you really need to be?” Although digital disruption is a phenomenon that everyone is talking about, Birkinshaw says that much of the change is concentrated in the technology, media, telecom, and retail industries. Analyzing data from Fortune 500 companies between the mid-90s, when the Internet first started to become a business phenomenon, and present day, Birkinshaw found that only 17 out of 500 companies are less than 25 years old. The other 483 have been in existence since 1995 — or much earlier. What exactly does that mean for your company in the era of digital? Although the transformative mindset is top-of-mind with a focus on digital revolutionaries such as Amazon, Google, and Apple, there aren't as many fully digital companies as you'd think. Your company doesn't have to completely transform itself in the digital world, but you should learn to adapt to the demand. Birkinshaw suggests that incumbents take a look at their industry and decide which strategy is best to adapt — whether that's waiting out the disruption, fighting back, consolidating, or reinventing yourself. Above all, Birkinshaw advises the following: “We must not lose sight of our identity and our core [values], and we should not allow ourselves to be taken away from what it is that's always made us successful.” Birkinshaw talks about this and more as he joins Thomas A. Stewart on The Leading Edge — a place where new ideas emerge and are sharpened, and where leaders look to find the edge that brings success for themselves, their teams, and their enterprises. In this episode of The Leading Edge, Thomas A. Stewart is joined by Julian Birkinshaw, Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the London Business School, to talk about the truths of digitization. Birkinshaw breaks down the hype around digital disruption, shares stories of success and failure within digital transformation initiatives, and discusses the strategies established brands can use to become more agile in this fast-changing world.

It's almost 2022, and we can all admit: times have changed. Anyone who's been in this industry for more than a couple of years will have seen the change happening. The shift is actually pretty clear... and it's all about our employees. With more and more Gen Y and Z coming into Salon and Spa businesses, there's been a change in the expectations that these employees have. People now greatly value what I call the ‘lifestyle factor'. They aren't willing to work themselves to the bone, and they place a lot of importance on their work/life balance. For many Salon and Spa Owners, this has been frustrating. But I think what we need to realise is that the shift is happening (or has happened) whether we like it or not. So we need to get with the times and adjust, so that our businesses have the chance to still flourish. That's why in this episode, I'm going to be chatting all about your role, as the Salon Owner… the Salon CEO. I believe that in order to be a ‘best boss', there is an important shift we need to make in not only our role itself, but how we, and others, view our role. Tune in now to find out what it is. Every leader has to know how to get, give and encourage feedback at work. Former Google and Apple executive Kim Scott’s book, Radical Candor: Be a Kick Ass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity, is a New York Times bestseller and inspired a management revolution. Radical candor is a simple idea: to be a good boss, you have to care personally and challenge directly. On this episode, we talk about how to create a culture of feedback, build a great team, and get results. This simple framework will guide every conversation you have and help you build better relationships.

To do this, Smash added in Giga Bowser, a more powerful boss version that plays like a more traditional and better boss fight. So today, let's see how Smash Ultimate's version of Giga Bowser makes the iconic boss even greater - on this episode of Boss Battle Breakdown!

Janice Marturano was a vice president at General Mills working on the Pillsbury merger deal in 2000 when she lost both her parents, and began a regular meditation practice as a way to soothe stress at work and in her personal life. Noticing the relief a daily practice brought her, and wanting to lead by example, she sought out a way to introduce mindfulness to her coworkers, and by the time she left General Mills to start the Institute for Mindful Leadership, she said more than 700 employees had completed mindfulness leadership training.
Do you want to be the best digital agency owner you can be? Think you could be a better boss? Of course you do. But let me guess... you work 24/7 on your digital agency? Yes! Of course you do. That's the life of an entrepreneur, and #agencylife right? But it is actually one of the WORST things you can do for your business, your team and yourself. Check out this video on why it's important to check out once in awhile. I just got back from a trip where I went totally off the grid for 10 days. I barely touched my business and it was AAAH-MAZE-ING. It's so important to just take a step back and let your business run itself for a little while. You need to get away from your office.... Get away from your clients... Get away from your team... And here's why: 1. You're the owner/founder and as an entrepreneur you're also a Visionary. We're classic "shiny red ball syndrome" cases, and we're the BEST distractions to our team. Let them focus and you'll be amazed at what they can accomplish when you're not there distracting them :) 2. You'll get a reprieve from the daily grind and come back to the business completely refreshed and renewed. If you think you're creative and innovative now, just wait until you've been able to recharge your batteries awhile. 3. Your agency needs systems and processes in place that allows it to run without you. What better way to look for holes than for you to actually leave and see what's broken? Nothing too catastrophic can happen if you leave for a week or so! 4. If the agency does well while you're gone, or maybe even runs better without you that's a good thing! You should not be working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week... adjust that to 24 days per month, 7 months of the year! 5. Your team feeds off your moods and routines. If you don't make time for your own hobbies or recreation they'll follow that lead. If you are always weighted down by the business, they will be too. Taking a break from the business not only sends a visible message to your team but will also have a ripple effect on their mood. Your role as CEO should not mean you're an integral part of the daily operations. Trust your team, trust your processes. And, be a better digital agency owner by leaving for awhile. Edge of the Web - An SEO Podcast for Today's Digital Marketer
Earlier this year, Erin and Tom were sitting at a local networking event and the presenter started talking about this concept called Radical Candor. It was a new book that had just come out and it definitely perked their interest. While we tend to focus on digital marketing topics for our show, we know that a lot of our audience are in management roles and could learn a few things from the book. So we reached out to Kim Scott, the author of the book "Radical Candor: Be a Kickass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity", to see if she could come on our show and answer our questions about the topic of "Radical Candor" The book was released earlier this year and it has now become a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller. In the book, she shares personal stories of her professional development as she worked in Russia, to starting her own company, to running successful teams at Google in how she developed the concepts she talks about in her book. Giveaway We are giving away ONE FREE COPY of Kim Scott's book "Radical Candor: Be a Kickass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity." To enter our contest, head over to our Facebook Live conversation and leave a question or comment for Kim and we'll choose one as the winner! You have until Friday, December 8 at noon ET to enter! Leadership is an ongoing process and great leaders continue to learn because they are curious. They don't necessarily learn from their experiences but by reflecting on their experiences. Kevin and Wally Bock discuss learning goals, relationships, and why to “not be the event.” Wally learned leadership as a U. S. Marine, an executive in a multi-national corporation, and as the owner of a small business focused on improving leadership for his clients.
Have you ever hired a team or even one person to help you in your business? No? Maybe...you've been doing everything yourself in your business for some time now. Longer than you really should have. But it's not because you haven't tried to find people to help you. You've been on upwork.com, elance.com, and hiremymom.com, but you haven't felt very “lucky” in your search for the right person or people yet. First thing is this - hiring is not an easy process. Second thing - you are not alone in struggling through that process. Third thing - it IS something you have to do at some point if you want to grow beyond a “job-replacement” business. (believe me - I know this from personal experience!) Every business owner gets to the point of hiring in different ways. Some people start finding help from the second they start their business. Some people start with interns. Others do everything as long as they possibly can... When is the right time to hire someone for your business? The answer is different for everyone. That's what we're talking about on today's episode. Full episode show notes located at: annesamoilov.com/126

Focus Is Your Friend: How to double down on marketing that matters
This week we sharpen the saw with a few golden nuggets from InterviewConnections.com’s Jessica Rhodes’ interview. We also focus on why it’s so important to spend time doing things you love. What you’ll learn about in this episode: The value of podcasting Why you don’t need to have a big audience for your podcast to be successful Different kinds of goals you can have with your podcast My goal for this podcast Why it’s so important to stick with your podcast after starting it Finding a hobby that you love Some hobby ideas if you’re struggling to think of them “Writing That Works; How to Communicate Effectively In Business Resources: Website: InterviewConnections.com Website: www.jessicarhodes.biz Webinars: www.jessicarhodes.biz/webinar Book: “Writing That Works; How to Communicate Effectively In Business” by Kenneth Roman & Joel Raphaelson
Today's Guest: Sydney Finkelstein, author, Superbosses, Why Smart Executives Fail, Steven Roth Professor of Management at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, as well as Tuck’s director of the Center for Leadership Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with Sydney Finkelstein by clicking on the video player above! Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of corporate drones who didn’t realize how much fun working for a living could be until 25 minutes from now… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! I just know there will be people watching or hearing this podcast who will hear that my guest’s new book is called Superbosses and they’ll have a common response: Supershmucks! Okay, get it out of your system now, because Sydney Finkelstein’s new book, Superbosses: How Exceptional Leaders Master the Flow of Talent, will make you re-think your entire approach to work, whether you’re a worker or a boss – or somewhere in between. SYDNEY FINKELSTEIN podcast excerpt: "What does a superboss's typical day look like? Superbosses don't lock themselves up in meetings all day long. They leave time for more unstructured interactions, for dropping by unannounced, and working closely together." You can LISTEN to this interview with Dartmouth College professor and writer SYDNEY FINKELSTEIN, author of SMARTBOSSES and WHY SMART EXECUTIVES FAIL, by clicking the audio player above! The whole idea of Superbosses is that there is a generation of remarkable business leaders – across industry, sports, and the arts – who appreciate and nurture talent. They will kick your ass from here to next week, likely pay you less, and expect you to work longer hours than seems natural. But they could potentially change the rest of your life for the better. I believe this book and its author will appeal to the rather broad Mr. Media audience because of whom Finkelstein anoints as “superbosses,” including: • Miles Davis • Alice Waters • Lorne Michaels • Ralph Lauren • Norman Brinker • Bill Walsh • Julian Robertson • Larry Ellison • Roger Corman • and George Lucas. When we’re done talking, you’ll want to ask yourself some serious questions, starting with: Where can I find a superboss of my own? SYDNEY FINKELSTEIN podcast excerpt: "Miles Davis is one of the most fascinating of all the examples that we discovered. The thing that's special about Miles Davis? What is a superboss? A superboss is a person that helps other people do more than tey ever thought possible. Look at the jazz bands that he created over time, the talent he discovered and helped get better: Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane. That's the definition of what a superboss does... It goes to show you that anyone could be a superboss." As for Sydney Finkelstein, he spent more than a decade working on the concepts, theories and observations that form the spine of Superbosses. He did so from a great vantage point, too: he is the Steven Roth Professor of Management at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, as well as Tuck’s director of the Center for Leadership. Superbosses is his ninth book, a catalog that includes the best-seller, Why Smart Executives Fail. Key interview moments: • 5:10 Superbosses author Sydney Finkelstein explains how misanthropic jazz legend Miles Davis made his list; • 17:45 What does a day in the life of a superboss look like?; • 28:35 Finkelstein explains that in the movie business, B movie king Roger Corman was beyond compare in recognizing and nurturing talent. Sydney Finkelstein Website • Blog • Twitter • Huffington Post • Wikipedia • Dartmouth College • Thinkers 50 • Goodreads • Harvard Business Review The Party Authority in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland!
We all have that one "boss" we remember fondly from the old days. The one you loved working for. The goal is to BE LIKE THAT PERSON. It doesn't mean be exactly like them, as you have to do so in your own way. But be mindful of being the best person you can, as you'll get more effort out of them if you put more effort into them!
