HIGHLIGHTSYou can grow yourself out of businessEntrepreneurs need to understand cash flow Take the complicated and make it simpleSuccessful business owners manage risk wellWith great price should come great service Using scrum in subcontract workHow to structure a good compensation program in the trades Start hiring for values first, trade skills second QUOTESJonathan: "All this underscores the need for entrepreneurs to have some financial literacy. There's not enough financial literacy. It doesn't have to be complicated. It doesn't mean you need to take an accounting class but you need to understand what your people are doing so you can understand maybe where they're messing up. You need to be able to understand a balance sheet, a cash flow, a P&L statement. Maybe read them, interpret them, and make some informed decisions or predictions around the future based on what's happening to your margins." Josh: "Those who stay in business for a really long time are not risk-takers. They are actually risk-averse and manage risk really well. And if I have a business doing half a million dollars and I take a 125,000 dollar job on, that's taking a big risk. I would tell that owner you should probably pass on that job. Or, if you really want to do that job, make sure you bid it for hours and materials not project cost."Josh: "If you're going to be premium-priced, you better be premium service to go along with it." Josh: "I don't think our employees care what others make. They care what they make and they look at what they make to see if they believe it's fair. Once they believe it's fair, they really don't care all that much what other folks make, including the owner. My guest Josh Patrick, is a no nonsense entrepreneur, business coach and wealth management planner all in one. With over 40 years  in business he brings a ton of experience and know how to the table. We hit on some great points in our conversation. Everything from core values to building your business to sell and how to do it.About Josh:My main focus in life is helping private business owners create extraordinary value with their businesses and lives. I help create great outcomes using life experiences I’ve had during my almost forty years of running and being around my favorite people, private business owners. I’m a student, an entrepreneur and a curious observer of life.WHAT’S REQUIRED FOR YOUR SUCCESS?I’ve learned that creating the outcomes you want requires that I listen and ask great questions.  My job is to help you identify and attain what you want, why it’s important, who needs to help and how you’re going to reach your desired outcome. You’ll need to be curious and willing to do a little work.  I know how hard it is to make changes in what you’re doing now.  I know how hard it is to learn to delegate and let others make mistakes.  I want to help you learn how to do these things.  It’s one of the two that will make your business really successful and even be able to be sold someday.WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO LISTEN TO ME?My specialty is working with owners of private businesses. It’s where I have the most interest and can add the most value. If you own a business and are interested in a coaching relationship as well as mentoring, I’m your guy.If you’re an advisor to private businesses I’ve been doing this for twenty years with the advantage of having been a consumer of advisory services for twenty years before switching sides of the table.  (In case you’ve been adding this up it means I’ve been obsessed with businesses for 40 years.)I’ve owned a vending and food service company where I built the company from 1.5 employees to 90 employees before successfully selling the business.  Along the way I made about a zillion mistakes that you can learn from and hopefully not make the same ones I made.Websitehttp://www.sustainablebusiness.coWebsite #2http://www.stage2planning.comWebsite #3http://www.sustainablethebook.comLinkedIn URLhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/askjoshpatrick/Facebook URLhttps://www.facebook.com/joshco0752Twitter URLhttps://twitter.com/AskJoshPatrickYouTube URLhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UC55nHCobcxCG_P9J8PBKUeA

As a business owner, selling your company is probably the last thing on your mind. But creating a sustainable, profitable business doesn't just help you sell for the most value when you do retire. It also helps you enjoy your business to the fullest. On this episode of the ROI Online Podcast, author Josh Patrick shares 5 practical ways entrepreneurs can maximize the value of their company and sell for a price they can feel proud of. As a financial consultant, Josh helps business owners work on their business rather than inside the business, so they can improve its value, profitability, and efficiency.Josh understands the difficulties of running a business himself. While working in a vending and food service company, Josh began to consider ways to save time so he could focus on other ventures. In the process, he stumbled upon simple ways entrepreneurs can improve their business:Values and missionHaving enough revenue coming through the doorBecoming operationally irrelevant to your businessSystemizing the businessFilling the four buckets of profitJosh wanted to help other entrepreneurs prepare for life outside the business. So, he transformed this knowledge into a book, Sustainable: A Fable About Creating a Personally and Economically Sustainable Business. He also started his business, Stage 2 Planning Partners, and podcast, Cracking the Cash Flow.According to Josh, a problem many business owners face is the “perma-five.” They're so overwhelmed about the thought of leaving their business that they put off planning for retirement, saying, “I'll think about that in 5 years.” But as years go on, they're permanently pushing it off.So when is the best time to start planning for business succession? Josh recommends business owners start looking at the five aspects of business growth above now. On a scale of 1 to 10, if you have the five aspects at an 8 or higher, you're going to be dying not to sell it because you'll be having too much fun and making too much money. At that point, when you do decide you're ready to retire, your business will be ready as well. You can sell your business for a price that reflects all the hard work you put into it.You can learn more about Josh here:sustainablebusiness.costage2planning.comListen to the Cracking the Cash Code PodcastRead Sustainable: A Fable About Creating a Personally and Economically Sustainable BusinessRead the books mentioned in this podcast:The 12 Week Year by Brian Moran Critical Path by Buckminster FullerFix This Next by Mike MichalowiczVivid Vision by Cameron HeroldEnroll in the QuickStart Academy today to learn how to develop and implement a proven growth strategy that grows your ROI, your business, and your confidence. Josh also tells us that successful companies have clearly articulated values, used as a tool, not just something you hang on the wall. My guest today is Josh Patrick. Josh is a Certified Financial Planner®, a Certified Financial Transitionist®, a Chartered Financial Consultant®, a Chartered Life Underwriter®, a serial entrepreneur, a writer, reader, and a thinker.  Josh Patrick is a contributor to The New York Times' You're the Boss blog, as well as the author of Stage 2 blog Creating Value.  Josh's main focus in life is helping private business owners create extraordinary value with their businesses and their lives. He draws on rich life experiences during his almost forty years of working with his favorite people, private business owners, to help them create great outcomes. On his podcast (called “The Sustainable Business”), Josh Patrick interviews thought leaders from many industries to help you think about your business twenty, thirty, or even more years into the future. In this conversation, we discuss how your firm fits into the future of the financial services industry. I have enjoyed this conversation. The wealth management industry is about as dysfunctional as an industry could be, and without its ridiculous margins most people in this business would fail. Josh Patrick makes a case for niche marketing, and looks forward into the future with ideas on how to make your business sustainable in an industry that's likely to become even more regulated.   Don't miss one of our favorite moments, when Josh breaks down the importance of mind-mapping to define the kinds of clients you should be working with. It's a simple exercise that you can do on a piece of paper right as you listen to the podcast, and it might turn out to be the most valuable thing you've done for your business this year.  Do you have the mindset that you can't afford to not service somebody? Or do you have the mindset that you can't afford to service somebody? How would your capacity grow if you were able to know which clients you should be serving? I hope you will find many practical ideas to try. Looking for more ideas about video blogging for financial advisors? For 2 years his business was highly successful and then the worst thing that could have happened, happened. Actually, an unfortunate chain of events happened which left him re-evaluating his business skills. Listen in to hear the details and also find out how an employees work anniversary taught him a valuable lesson about running a good business. Josh also tells us about: His 3 most recommended books on business Something he thinks is wise that other people think is crazy Advice he would give to his younger self His best investment Plus, we dive into embracing mistakes and why people have a hard time letting go... all on today's episode of The Art of Passive Income! But, also good for ninja marketing when visiting your competitors websites. Josh: Robert Kiyosaki's formula for investment vs. expense—your house is not an investment it's an expense. The reason it's an expense it doesn't have positive cash flow. So if you're going to be in a passive business and it doesn't create positive cash flow from day one it's not a passive investment it's a passive liability.  Isn't it time to create passive income so you can work where you want, when you want and with whomever you want?

Josh Patrick, Stage 2 Planning Partners Owning and running your own business has many aspects to it including if you want to sell your business in the future. Many business owners don’t realistically plan their exit strategy and believe that working hard in the business will reap financial rewards sufficient to fund their retirement. In this episode, Kathleen interviews Josh about the steps business owners need to take now to build a sustainable business that is saleable tomorrow. Take Aways: Be honest about your business. Is your business a lifestyle business (one that supports you financially now but is not saleable in the future) or a sustainable business that can be sold and run smoothly with you. Determine your short and long-term business goals. If you want to build a business that is saleable, you need to delegate, set up good operating systems, and have a strategic plan for your exit. Working with a consultant can help. Entrepreneurs are emotionally involved in their creation and often suffer from “shiny little light” syndrome (going from one idea to the next too quickly). Working with a consultant is a great way to learn the behaviors you need to succeed in business and set yourself up for a lucrative liquidity event. Josh Patrick is the owner of Stage 2 Planning Partners and is a serial entrepreneur who is obsessed with what makes a private business economically and personally sustainable. Studies have shown that working with a niche is an excellent way for financial planners to narrow their focus, define their specialty, and become an expert in helping their unique client base. Josh Patrick, CFP®, has had first hand experience with this as a financial planner whose firm focuses on working with business owners. In this episode, Josh discusses he combines business coaching with financial planning for a successful practice. He has a simple but effective approach to inspire clients to act and work toward financial freedom. He believes that honesty is key, and helping business owners work toward retirement (rather than perpetually saying they’ll retire without taking action) is a necessary goal. Josh discusses business owners who are in the “permafive” stage continuously, which plagues many financial planning succession plans. This means that business owners are always thinking how they’ll retire in five years – but don’t actually take the steps needed to make that transition. Josh knows this applies to financial planners looking to retire, as well. Financial planners who are in a “permafive” situation have often already lined up a buyer for their practice – and it’s usually a junior level financial planner. Josh walks us through how young planners can benefit from buying a practice, and how a planner in that “permafive” cycle can finally break free and act on their ideal succession plan. We cover a lot of ground in this episode, and anybody who works with business owners, is a financial planning practice owner (or is aspiring to be one) will get a lot out of it! “It’s much safer selling to a junior planner…Because you’re doing an internal transaction, you can set the deal up so that a) it’s tax friendly to the buyer and b) you can stay in control of the firm until you sell it off.” What You’ll Learn: How to work with business owners How to buy in as a junior level planner How senior advisors can set themselves up for retirement success How succession planning can help both the buyer and the seller How to get business owner clients to act on their financial plans and retirement plans   The Purposeful Planning Institute Business Enterprise Institute Exit Planning Institute https://twitter.com/askjoshpatrick The Sustainable Business Stage 2 Planning Partners https://www.sustainablethebook.com/
