Who should have won the Filipe v Julian Burleigh final? Well, 69% of @stab poll respondents believe the judges got it wrong — that Julian was the rightful winner of last week's Gold Coast Pro. However, when we polled a list of true surfing experts (Mick Fanning, Taj Burrow, Jake Paterson, Doug Silva, and Leo Fioravanti), they had a slightly different opinion. This week on The Drop, Stace G and Mikey C dissect everything that went down at the Gold Coast Pro, and eventually we're joined by Julian Wilson to hear his thoughts on a heroic return to Championship Tour surfing.

Senior Director of Surf Experience at Surf Abu Dhabi and former Championship Tour surfer Mitch Crews joins us on the pod. With the CT descending on the region, Mitch shares his insights on who's been standing out in practice—like Jack Robinson, Filipe Toledo, Ethan Ewing, and Samuel Pupo—and breaks down the high-stakes, pressure-cooker, exposing nature of wave pool competitions. Mitch and Dave dive into the groundbreaking technology behind Surf Abu Dhabi, home to the first public Kelly Slater Wave System. He explains what it was like to build the team of this world-class surf destination from scratch, refine the ultimate artificial saltwater wave, and collaborate with engineers and hospitality crews to create an unforgettable surf experience. Dave also pulls up the heat draw from Mitch's first CT event at Snapper Rocks in 2014, as they wind the clock back to his competitive roots—from growing up on Australia's Sunshine Coast to battling legends like Julian Wilson, Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Kelly Slater, Taj Burrow, Josh Kerr, Jordy Smith, and more. Many oral maxillofacial surgeons don't treat TMJ issues due to the lack of success following surgical intervention. Dr. Julian Wilson traveled to Shanghai as part of his fellowship, where he learned how to perform a new technique for disc plications. Tune in to hear how this has impacted his scope of practice and the way he thinks about TMJ surgery. 141- Gringos e brasileiros no surf: o assunto que nunca morre

Surf de Mesa

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 18, 2021 38:19

If you're the owner of your business and you're keen to improve productivity, or you want your business to run 200X better when you're not there, why not get your employees to step up, not step back, from the challenge of running the business as efficiently as you do. Don't miss Andrew Holm and Julian Wilson of Matt Black Systems on this week's episode. Some of the challenges that they've solved are probably some of the challenges that your business is facing today. Andrew and Julian turned their business around by whittling the organisation down from 30 people to five over two years and dissolving the former hierarchical business model and creating a network of one person businesses. The result? Two employees now produce the same turnover each year as 30 people used to do. They spent £250m trying to improve productivity by implementing lean and then agile processes, but every time the consultants left, the business reverted back to how it operated before the change. So they decided to change some stupid rules, triggering an awakening in their employees, encouraging their employees to think for themselves:“On a roundabout, every car has a controlling mind in it. In a traffic light, there's only one controlling mind.”This episode is slightly longer than normal, but it's worth it. Julian and Andrew explain, in detail, precisely the experiments they undertook to create their current business model. This is an absolutely fantastic conversation. On today's podcast:Lean and agile are outcomes, not processesNatural human behaviour at workThe invisible managerTraffic lights vs roundaboutsCreating a central marketLinks:Book - 500%: How Two Pioneers Transformed Productivitywww.fractalwork.com

Julian Wilson began his career at Apple in the late 80s. Here he worked on projects such as the world's first set top box, hybrid CD / internet games console and as part of the team who introduced Newton [arguably the forerunner to the iPhone].   He left Apple to join ATT in 1996, where he conceived and built a digital cash payment service for mobile phones based on smart cards.  In 1999 after raising $5m from US venture capitalists and the Dutch Government, Julian led a management buyout of this technology to create SmartAxis BV.  After two more Internet start-ups focused on identity and mobile data, Julian joined Barclays engineering team in late 2013, where amongst other things he and a colleague submitted global patents for modification to the bitcoin protocols / blocks of crypto currency.   Julian joined Ecospend in 2019 to build a self-sovereign data service on top of an Open Banking platform. He describes his role as putting an Internet lens onto product design. References:  Julian Wilson on LinkedIn Ecospend EU Payment Services Directive (PSD2) Solid

In today's corporate culture, the ability for brand leaders to step-up and make an executive decision is virtually non-existent. Consensus-culture means brands are more interested in protecting fragile egos than rewarding true innovation. We're all too timid to take accountability and put our jobs on the line to make a big bet on something we believe in, which is why brands are failing and careers are stalling. During his 20 year career at Red Bull, our guest Chris Mater–current CEO of Surfing Australia–is an example of someone who was willing to put his job on the line over and over again to achieve extraordinary outcomes–and along the way, he and his team changed the world of sport and sports marketing forever.

Martin believes that every person should be given an equal chance to experience the waves and be a better surfer. Today, he's out to provide the wisdom, tools, and resources for surfers to find the joy and recognition they deserve. In this episode, we talked about Martin's own journey- his sacrifices, risks, challenges, and rewards. Martin also shares with us valuable surfing techniques on: achieving balance, gaining speed especially on smaller waves, and combining manoeuvres. He also talks about the most important thing that a surfer must do before paddling out and the biomechanics of a perfect cutback. If you are a surf coach, you may also want to hear expert advice on how to provide instructions, communicate according to your learner's perspective, and help them face the pressure and frustrations that come with being in the professional league. His name is Martin Dunn, and he is my guest today. Martin has been influencing worldwide professional surfing for the past 35 years. He's a Professional Surf Coach who has taken his students to the summit. So if you grew up learning to surf in Australia, you are bound to have also come across one of his booklets on surfing drills. He started his career by writing a thesis about the perfect cutback. So in essence, Martin is the man. “You can make the big time if you have a certain level of talent but also the work ethic to work harder. You need to learn how to lose a lot before you start winning and get to the big time. In this episode, Pilar talks to Julian Wilson, CEO of Matt Black Systems, about how the company made the transition to self-management. The journey was worth it, but also a bit painful... 1hr 07 mins - long, but worth the listen. visit www.virtualnotdistant.com for your 7-part email series on leading virtual teams.  Introduction A brief one, seriously! Pilar recommends some books and podcasts, and you can find the links below... But should we be pursuing self-management as an end in itself? In this episode, Pilar talks to Julian Wilson, CEO of Matt Black Systems, (a design and manufacturing company in the aerospace sector) who, in the journey to improve the company, ended up with a self-managed business. Yes, if this is the right structure for your company, this system will bring all kinds of tangible and intangible joys, but we prepared for some pain along the way... It's 2003 and the company is in trouble... "We measured the machines and the processes but we didn't measure the people." Lean manufacturing didn't quite work. The problem didn't lie with the tool, but with the culture. How do you change the culture? Micromanaging didn't work, standardising operation procedures didn't work. Julian gives us a specific example of how they made savings in Purchasing. How the company cut down on administrative staff. Should you give admin tasks to people who don't like doing them, so that they get done faster?! "I wouldn't do it like this again." Changing culture is difficult; you're changing habits. Why are we not trusted at work to do things and make decisions like those we take in our personal lives? When you trust people and de-centralise, you will come up across some problems. Recruitment - who stays, who goes and who is recruited? Do businesses need to grow? Julian is setting up a new organisation, based on the Buurtzorg model.   Further reading and listening: How to Become a Soulful Organisation - RSA  https://www.thersa.org/events/2015/01/how-to-become-a-soulful-organisation Global Business podcast: Companies Without Managers http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02nrwfk/episodes/downloads The Story Behind Morning Star's Success https://thefutureorganization.com/self-management-the-story-behind-morningstars-success/
