We're always talking about protecting and preserving native plants. But why? What do they do that makes them so valuable compared to alien species? We explore just what's so special about native plants and their role in Hawaiian ecosystems with help from Conservationist Jane Beachy, Manager of the Army Natural Resources Program. Conservation Talk Story is a storytelling forum for conservationists in Hawaii. We host experts on topics covering every aspect of conservation science, including: mitigating human impacts, protecting rare species, and public education. Our goal is not only to increase awareness regarding specific conservation issues in the state, but also to provide correct information, backed by science, to our listeners so they are equipped to make decisions about sustainability and conservation in their own lives. Hosted by Emily Sesno and Max Bendes, Conservation Talk Story is brought to you by the Hawaii chapter of The Society for Conservation Biology (HISCB) with support from KTUH.

John Santerineross is an American photographer, born in New York City with a background in ceramics and painting, known for his dark, provocative and erotic imageries. His photography is inspired by Greek mythology, world religion and iconography focusing on the spiritual, the subconscious and dreams. He is influenced by the early symbolists’ belief that “the creation of a mood is as important as the transmission of information; it must also seek to engage the entire mind and personality of the viewer by appealing to the viewer’s emotions and unconscious mind, as well as to their intellect”. Although he coined the term "Black Symbolist" to better describe his work, he has been called the "World Leading Neo-Symbolist Artist" by ProfiFoto, Germany's leading photography magazine. Driven by passion, creativity and dedication, throughout his career, his refusal to be limited by any one medium has led him to master multiple artistic disciplines; he has been a ceramist, sculptor, painter, and mixed media artist. For that reason, he does not like to be classified or categorized and prefers to let the viewer decide and define. He has recently delved into the world of moving images and has already directed several short art films. Currently, Santerineross is in the preproduction phase of an adaptation of an avante-garde short story entitled “Ningyoushi”. Santerineross' photography has been shown nationally and internationally, all over the world. Olympia Terral is the author of MOTHER TREE, a book that teaches children of all ages and adults the importance of taking care of our environment through moving characters and illustrations. Illustration paintings by Dawn Lees Reyes. Acknowledgement to Maria Fitzpatrick for her role in the creation of this story.Olympia Terral began writing this book over her concern for the disregard many people seem to have for the natural world. Watching the development that has occurred on the island of Guam over the last 30 years, it saddens her that future generations may not know what it feels like to spend time on a beach with native trees offering shade, not large umbrellas and beach bars. She thought if she could tell a story from the point of view of the trees and animals it may help some people to consider the impact rampant development has on the animals and plants that share this planet with us. It is her hope that this book will inspire people to take action to nurture nature, which ultimately nurtures us all.Olympia Terral has made her home on Guam for over 30 years. She is also a beekeeper, a tree hugger, a research associates at the University of Guam and a believer that we have a sacred duty to live lightly on the Earth and respect all forms of life. As a yoga therapist and yoga teacher she understands the healing that occurs when people have access to nature and the rhythms of the natural world.
