Albums and All That, Starting with the letter S as in Sierra, Part 9 From Something to Shout About (Lulu) to Sophisticated Boom Boom (Dead or Alive) Oh hey, by the way... there is now a Vinyl-O-Matic Patreon (https://patreon.com/youroldpalwill) Lulu with The Luvvers [00:30] "Chocolate Ice" Something to Shout About Decca LK 4719 1965 Hey hey hey! It's Lulu! This is her debut album. Despite what you might guess from her voice, she was 17 when she recorded this album. "Chocolate Ice" is the excellent title song to the very weird Gonks Go Beat (https://youtu.be/XhozBIMplQA?si=ULHH1FdCqSWJPyJ5) (Hartford-Davis, 1964), featuring Lulu and The Luvvers, The Nashville Teens, and the Graham Bond Organisation Todd Rundgren [02:40] "Hello It's Me" Something / Anything? Bearsville 2BX 2066 1972 Rundgren's 3rd solo album, spreading his musical wings a bit more than previous releases. Todd had originally written the song as a very mellow ballad with the Nazz in 1967, and was released as a b-side (https://youtu.be/FmLnDL_pNZQ?si=enMwjWzgNe_iplus) to their psyche rocker "Open My Eyes". Usually I'd go with the power pop progenitor "Couldn't I Just Tell You (https://youtu.be/fosMLTCFKQ8?si=Dgn25DMa61xCFRbJ)", but well, I'm feeling more mid-tempo at the moment. Jimmy Buffett [07:29] "Cheeseburgers in Paradise" Son of a Son of a Sailor ABC Records AA-1046 1976 Let me be perfectly clear: I am not now, nor have I ever been a Parrot Head. However, I do love cheeseburgers. This is the lead single from Buffett's eighth solo album. The single made it to #32 on the Hot 100. There's also a much-watered-down version of "Livingston Saturday Night", which can be heard to greater effect (https://youtu.be/5uizFyDRxso?si=ZfVrun8krTdxzagG) on the Rancho Deluxe (Perry, 1975) soundtrack, see also: Season 5, Episode 76 (https://vinylomatic.com/s05e76). Harry Nilsson [10:20] "It Is He Who Will Be King/Daybreak" Son of Dracula Rapple Records ABL1-0220 1974 The only new Nilsson song on this soundtrack. The less said about the actual film. Count Downe (Nilsson) is invited to take over Count Dracula's throne by Merlin (Ringo Starr). Lots of monsters and lots of rock stars, including Keith Moon and John Bonham, Peter Frampton, Bobby Keys, Klaus Voorman, and Leon Russell. Watch at your own peril (https://youtu.be/IIik_o16sro?si=WvmR54QPJ16Qmd6s). Great packaging for the record though, includine a die-cut gatefold and an iron on transfer for the cover image with "Bite Me" written in goth script below. Julian Bahula's Jazz Africa [16:15] "Molebatsi" Son of the Soil Tsafrika Records TSA 001 1982 A great collective outing composed by this South African by way of Britain drummer/composer/bandleader. I picked this one up at Revolution Records in Amsterdam. If Google Translate isn't lying to me, this title translates to "Smoker" from Swati. And a smoker it is. The Temptations [21:46] "Shakey Ground" A Song for You Gordy G6-969S1 1975 One of several excellent P-Funk-backed tracks on this album. There's a pretty excellent Delbert McClinton version of this song as well (https://youtu.be/w7JCWoxtGLs?si=tLtnwaOT1j24Tgvy). The Exbats [25:47] "Like It Like I Do" Song Machine Goner Records GONE 192 2023 And boy do I like it! Another excellent outing from Bisbee AZ denizens Inez and Kenny and friends (https://youtu.be/l-Onx5zVfMs?si=OSeD0DJHPaOZ4NGW). They pretty much just keep getting awesomer and awesomer. Big Black [28:17] "L Dopa" Songs About Fucking Touch and Go T&G LP #24 1987 Scorching. And sadly, fare thee well, Steve. To anyone interested in recording, Steve and Electric Audio provided (and still provide) a wealth of information, as for instance: Everything you've ever wanted to know about tape alignment but were afraid to ask (https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXA7imybaTsFWOFpaeP8wgXNDlZ4Xc8yq&si=ZMsU_ifbEBbmp6Kh). THE FOLLOWING TRACK IS INTENDED FOR MATURE AUDIENCES. LISTENER DISCRETION IS ADVISED
I had a conversation with legendary guitarist MARK GEMINI THWAITE (MGT) regarding his music, collaborations and upcoming events.Born in Birmingham, England, MGT has been the guitarist and collaboration for a number of English rock bands and artists over the last two decades, including The Mission, Peter Murphy, Tricky, Spear of Destiny, Raymond Watts (PIG), Theatre of Hate, Ashton Nyte, Mob Research (with Paul Raven of Killing Joke), and Canadian band National Velvet plus various live and recorded appearances with Gary Numan, Al Jourgensen of Ministry, Revolting Cocks, Roger Daltrey, P.J. Harvey, Alanis Morissette, Combichrist, Primitive Race, Black Star Riders, Ginger of The Wildhearts, Stan Lee of Marvel Comics, Franz Treichler of The Young Gods and Ville Valo of HIM and so much more.In 2016 MGT signed a solo album deal with German label SPV records and releases his first solo album, "Volumes" under his MGT acronym at the end of June worldwide. The lead single, "Knowing Me Knowing You", a cover version of the ABBA classic featuring guest vocalist Ville Valo of HIM, was released in April and viewed over half a million times in two months - mixed by Tim Palmer (HIM/David Bowie). Valo is not the only guest musician on "Volumes", other appearances include Wayne Hussey of Mark's previous band The Mission, Miles Hunt and Erica Nockalls of UK band The Wonder Stuff, Ricky Warwick of Black Star Riders / Thin Lizzy, Raymond Watts (PIG, KMFDM), Saffron (Republica), Julianne Regan (All About Eve), and Ashton Nyte (The Awakening).https://www.markthwaite.comQUEEN OF WANDS with DJ Nocturna Every Saturday on ModSnap Radio | KMOD: San Antonio3pm (HST), 5pm (PST), 6pm (MST), 7pm (CST), 8pm (EST)Radio: https://modsnapradio.comThank you for liking and subscribing and THANK YOU for your continued support !

Baxie talks to Wayne Hussey of The Mission. Since the 1980's Wayne Hussey has built an amazing career in not just one legendary band--but three! A one-time member of both The Sisters of Mercy and Dead or Alive, Wayne Hussey has written some of the biggest anthems in Goth Rock! Wayne talks about those moments which you can also read about in his two-volume series of memoirs. He also talks about the Mission as a touring band as well has the band's newest live album "Live from Buenos Aries". This is great conversation with a man who has sold millions of albums throughout his career. Listen on Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, Spotify, Google Podcasts, and on the Rock102 website. Wayne Hussey in conversation with David Eastaugh https://themissionukband.com/home Book - Heady Daze The Mission Years 1985-1990 Picking up where the critically acclaimed Salad Daze left off, Heady Daze sees Wayne Hussey revisit the years from 1985 to 1990 leading The Mission through their formation to global success. From headlining some of Europe's major festivals, playing with U2, Robert Plant and The Cure and sweeping the UK music papers' readers' polls, to the excesses of touring the world and the lurid headlines that followed them wherever they ventured, it's all here in this memoir packed full of candid moments and hilarious anecdotes.

The latest episode of the podcast which asks; has anyone ever lost their virginity while listening to a Jive Bunny record? It's the long-awaited return of Our Sarah and Taylor after their encounter with the Spiteful Armoured Bollock, Pop-Crazed Youngsters – and to welcome them back, Al allowed them to pick out an episode. Consequently, we're heading deep into the heart of the Neighties. Your panel are a) being Arthur Seaton in Saturday Night and Sunday Morning without the sex, b) hovering over the pause button during the Top 40, and c) playing Human Frogger on the way to a Blue Boar, while the music scene is awash with flares! Pob faces! That dance where you look like you're walking on a bouncy castle with a pint in each hand! Ridiculously misplaced optimism! And BLEDDEH DRUGS, of course!Musicwise, crikey: we're promised a Rock n' Roll episode by Simon Mayo, who looks absolutely shagged out having been up since 5am, but the overriding theme tonight is British people finally coming to terms with dance music whilst plundering as much of the late Sixties as possible. Wayne Hussey warms up for his date with James Whale with some Pub Goth. New Kids On The Block do something pointless and futile with a basketball. Candy Flip – the Jedward of Madchester – cause the Kids to hysterically scream as if John Lennon had ripped himself from the grave and turned up at the studio to have it out with them. The B-52s have a better night out than you. Big Fun, Fish and Wet Wet Wet get about 20 seconds each. Bobby Omnishake prances like an absolute tit, everyone whoops at an Inspiral Carpets suicide anthem, Jive Bunny throws down some hardcore Dad-Hop, Quentin fancies Lindy I.D.S.T., and we get some actual House music at the end. For about 30 seconds.Sarah Bee and Taylor Parkes join Al Needham for a clinically intensive rummage through the Spring of 1990, veering off on such tangents as a comprehensive drill-down into Mike Read's Heritage Chart, what not to do when cleaning out a Fleshlight, the Stone Roses/New Kids war in the Smash Hits letters page, Showaddywaddy's Bloods/Crips dilemma, how the Martians wisely self-isolated and wore masks for a couple of years, and some remarkably graphic sex talk. In the early 1980s two bands dominated the independent charts: the Smiths and the Sisters of Mercy. They have proved to be equally influential. In every city in the world you will find people dressed like they have just walked offstage from playing a gig with the Sisters of Mercy in 1983.“Paint My Name in Black and Gold” tells the story of their rise – how against the odds and all reasonable expectation they came to make transcendent and life-changing music. It is also about the glorious stupidity of being in a Leeds rock band in the early 80s. There's a lot of dry ice, blood, vomit, speed and sex in the toilets. There are tales involving a milk float, a VHS cassette of a Michael Caine film, a hibernating snake, a wardrobe in a tree, an amyl nitrate-soaked effects pedal and the inopportune consumption of Dutch hash cake. The Sisters began in 1980, meandered through two years of intermittent gigging, iffy recordings and sundry line-up changes without much attention being paid to them before finding their two classic line-ups: Eldritch on vocals, Adams on bass, Gary Marx and Ben Gunn – and later Wayne Hussey – on guitars, and a drum machine called Doktor Avalanche.By force of will and their own peculiar talents – and with the support of friends and the kindness of strangers – these young men achieved greatness. Hussey and Adams – The Evil Children, as they termed themselves – were hard living road dogs with fascinating musical back-stories. Neither Gunn nor Marx were natural rock'n'roll animals, but the latter performed with such abandon – often in such lurid shirts – that it was hard to believe he also wrote The Sisters' most delicate and beautiful music. Lead singer Andrew Eldritch was the most peculiar and compelling of them all, a singular and mesmerizing amalgam of T. S. Eliot and David Bowie. In the five years covered in this book, Eldritch staked a powerful claim to be the greatest rock star of his generation.Paint My Name in Black and Gold covers the band's rise until the release of their iconic first album.Mark Andrews is a journalist from the UK now living in Belgium. The first musician he ever interviewed was Lemmy – for the Folkestone Gazette in October 2003. Most recently, he has interviewed Jon Spencer, Boss Hog, Mudhoney and The Scientists. He has written for the Middle East Times, Egypt Magazine, LeftLion, Flanders Today, The Quietus and Louder. This book grew out of two acclaimed articles he wrote about the Sisters of Mercy for The Quietus.Purchase a copy of “Paint My Name in Black and Gold” through Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Paint-My-Name-Black-Gold/dp/1800180381Purchase an e-book copy of “Paint My Name in Black and Gold” through Unbound Books: https://unbound.com/books/sistersofmercyPurchase Wayne Hussey's book "Salad Daze": https://www.amazon.com/Salad-Daze-Wayne-Hussey/dp/1785586602/refJoin the Heartland Sisters of Mercy Forum here: https://www.myheartland.co.ukJoin the Sisters of Mercy 1980-1985 Facebook group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/The-Sisters-Of-Mercy-1980-1985-Group-1704379173138423Listen to a playlist of the music discussed in this episode: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/77NASBGupvv58UuoJcoHy2?si=1e562f4a0dc748f5The Booked On Rock Website: https://www.bookedonrock.comFollow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/bookedonrockpodcastTWITTER: https://twitter.com/bookedonrockSupport Your Local Bookstore! We don't normally cover new bands on the Hustle, but we're making a special exception this time. Beauty in Chaos is the brainchild of musician Michael Ciravolo. Michael is steeped in the dark goth rock of the 80s, bands like the Cure, the Mission, Gene Loves Jezebel (who he also played with). He's taken that and released two great albums (as well as two remix albums), but what's amazing is who he's gotten to appear on these albums. Here's a list - Robin Zander, Michael Anthony, Simon Gallup, Ice T, Michael Aston, Al Jourgensen, Dug Pinnick and several former guests like Wayne Hussey, Tim Palmer and John Fryer. It's a collection of musicians you won't see anywhere else. Hear from Michael how he made all this happen and how he intends to move forward. www.beautyinchaosmusic.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

On the fifth episode of the Post-Punk Podcast, our Editor-in-Chief Alex Baker spoke to Wayne Hussey of The Mission, a band that formed in wake of The Sisters of Mercy's debut album First and Last and Always, and its aborted follow-up. During the interview, Wayne talks about his work with several other bands, including Pauline Murray and the Invisible Girls and Dead or Alive. Wayne also spoke on what the original Goth scene featured at Planet X in Liverpool was like, as well as his visit to Danceteria in New York, and the origins of some of the iconic Goth fashions of the 80s, including the famous Goth cowboy hat. Wayne discussed all of this and more, including the origins of some iconic songs from both TSOM and The Mission, with more in-depth details on these stories to be found in part one of his autobiography Salad Daze. Wayne also launched The Remission International Charity collaboration, where various artists from the Post-Punk and Gothic Rock scenes came together in support of front-line workers during the COVID-19 Pandemic. You can find more info about the "Tower of Strength 2020" aka "TOS2020" here. Be sure to check out Wayne's Lynchian duet of ‘The Delicate Balance of All Things” with his wife Cinthya for Michael Ciravolo's Beauty in Chaos, a collaborative track that heralds more to come between Mr. and Mrs. Hussey. SONG: HEROES (SINGLE EDIT) ARTIST: ASHTON NYTE ALBUM: WAITING FOR A VOICE *Please see below COMPOSERS: DAVID BOWIE | BRIAN ENO PUBLISHER: UNIVERSAL MUSIC PUBLISHING GROUP (1977) WEB / BIO: https://www.ashtonnyte.com/bio-contact ISRC: ZA-C48-20-04947 GENRE: ALTERNATIVE | SINGER-SONGWRITER INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/ashtonnyte/ FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/ashtonnyte SPOTIFY: https://open.spotify.com/artist/7J66VKvTZxYiFeI2n0PWed?si=9FY5c-xrTiCt0Zbdof6scQ Ashton Nyte has just released a haunting rendition of David Bowie's "Heroes". The single is released ahead of his upcoming book and album, "Waiting For A Voice" which will be available on 20 July 2020. Ashton says that recording Bowie's iconic song was not something he did lightly. "The original recording is absolutely perfect as is. I am certainly not able to improve on such a masterwork, nor was that my intention. My version is simply an intimate ode to a song and an artist who helped shape my life as I prefer to know it. It is a song of hope, lyrically as vital today as ever," says Ashton. Now based in the USA, Ashton Nyte is a South African born composer, singer, multi-instrumentalist and producer. He has released 6 solo albums, in addition to 9 albums as The Awakening, one of South Africa's most prominent alternative rock bands. He has also contributed lyrics and vocals to a number of projects, most recently Beauty In Chaos, which features members of The Cure and Cheap Trick among others. Nyte's works have been featured on NPR/PRI in the USA, and he has performed live in-studio to 125 million listeners on the international radio show Border Crossings. Ashton has written and performed in theatrical productions and organized philanthropic events including his Rock Against Rape concert series, and presenting a lecture series at US universities focusing on tolerance and acceptance. Ashton recently completed a 36 date European Tour with British indie artist Wayne Hussey in October 2019 and is currently completing work on his debut book of poetry and short stories, to accompany his new album release.
Wayne Hussey's knack for writing deep, beautiful pop songs about struggles with the divine and a penchant for darkness are unlike anyone else. He has led his formidable band The Mission for over 35 years, giving a voice to the confused and unsure with songs like "Tower of Strength", Butterfly on a Wheel" and "Wasteland"among many others. Wayne discusses how his Mormon upbringing may have influenced his art, his short time in Dead Or Alive and Sisters Of Mercy, how he feels about being labeled "goth", the stories behind many of the songs, and how he pulled off the "modern Band Aid" with his TOS2020 Remission charity single. He's one of a kind! Enjoy! www.themissionuk.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

Brazilian singer, songwriter, actress and visual artist, Cinthya Hussey was inspired to play the ukulele by Hawaii's Na Hoku Hanohano awards artist, musician, Paula Fuga when she watched her inspirational speech on TEDxMaui conference "Believe in Yourself," in 2012. Paula Fuga's 'Misery's End' was the first song Cinthya learned to play on the Ukulele. Not long after that, her husband, Mission's frontman and guitarist, Wayne Hussey bought her a ukulele for a wedding anniversary present. Since then, Cinthya released her first single and official video, a cover of Morrissey's "Everyday is Like Sunday," produced by Wayne Hussey. Cinthya has also recently contributed vocals to a couple of remixes of the Beauty In Chaos anthem, "The Delicate Balance Of All Things," the "Rapid Reiteration Mix," remixed by renowned music producer Tim Palmer and the Equipoise Mix, mixed by the curator of Beauty in Chaos, Michael Ciravolo and Grammy Award winning producer Michael Rozon. Cinthya's paintings were also used as artwork for the albums "Out of Chaos Comes" and "Chaos Continues. "Cinthya's new single was released on December 11, 2020 called "My Heart is a Ghosttown." Produced by Wayne Hussey, the song is like a vision of "50s/60s pop meets the Cocteau Twins meets David Lynch." This is her first song that she wrote, originally a poem, which will be included on her debut solo album planned for release in 2021. www.cinthyahussey.com
We close out our recent producer series by talking to the fantastic Tim Palmer! Tim's career goes back 40 years and includes everyone from Ozzy to Kajagoogoo to Heatwave. We hear amazing stories about his time with artists like Tin Machine, Pearl Jam, Dead or Alive, Robert Plant, Tears for Fears, U2, Psychedelic Furs and many others. Tim is still very active today, in fact a recent production of his couldn't be more important. Wayne Hussey of The Mission put together an all-star group of music legends to re-record their seminal hit, "Tower Of Strength" with Tim producing as a charity single for front-line workers during the pandemic. Think of it as the 2020 version of Band-Aid. It's beautiful stuff and so is everything else Tim touches. Enjoy! www.timpalmer.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

Wayne Hussey is goth-rock royalty. Between his tenure as guitarist in The Sisters of Mercy to founding the The Mission UK, the frontman/guitarist has created some of the most iconic and evocative work in the genre...and beyond. Never content to rest on his laurels, Hussey remains a creative force, as evidenced on The Mission's 2016 epic 'Another Fall From Grace.' And now he's lending his musical talents to a host of charities for Covid-19 frontline workers with a new charity version of one of his biggest hits. Hussey has remade The Mission's 1988 classic 'Tower of Strength' (retitled as 'TOS 2020') with a huge host of musicians (christened as The ReMIssion International) that reads like a Who's Who of alternative icons, including (deep breath) Andy Rourke, Billy Duffy, Budgie, Evi Vine, Gary Numan, James Alexander Graham, Jay Aston (who we've interviewed for this podcast), Julianne Regan, Kevin Haskins (who we've ALSO interviewed for this podcast), Kirk Brandon, Lol Tolhurst, Martin Gore, Michael Aston, Michael Ciravolo, Midge Ure, Miles Hunt, Rachel Goswell, Richard Fortus, Robin Finck, Steve Clarke, Tim Palmer and Trentemøller. In this episode, Hussey and I discuss what inspired remaking 'Tower of Strength', the Herculean task of assembling such an intimidating list of collaborators (and how he got Jay and Michael Aston to appear on the same track), his thoughts on being a musician during a pandemic, his other recent creative pursuits and more. So check it out, and be sure to stick around afterwards, when we'll be playing the radio edit edition of 'TOS2020', And you can purchase the new single in a variety of digital and physical formats by visiting the band's official website. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/slis/support

The Mission special with Wayne Hussey talking about life in music, Sisters of Mercy, The Mission and his new book, Salad Daze. After an aborted recording session with Andrew Eldritch in the summer of 1985, Wayne Hussey and Craig Adams left the Sisters of Mercy. Based in Leeds, the duo continued to work on various musical ideas and recorded them over the autumn. Dismissing the use of a drum-machine, Adams and Hussey asked Mick Brown to help out with the sessions. By the end of the year, he had joined the band on a permanent basis. With Hussey as both the frontman and principal songwriter, the trio required a second guitarist to facilitate a live set-up. They eventually recruited Simon Hinkler who also contributed keyboards and thus completed the four-piece. The name 'The Sisterhood' was chosen with a nod to past and rehearsals for the first shows started in January 1986. The new name quickly became a point of discussion in the English music-press, giving the four-piece significant amount of publicity. As 'The Sisterhood' the band made their live-debut on 20 January 1986 at the Alice in Wonderland, London. Hussey and Adams were released from their WEA contracts and the band signed a seven-album deal with Phonogram in July 1986. Their debut God's Own Medicine was then recorded in six weeks with novice producer Tim Palmer, an acquaintance from Hussey's Dead or Alive days. In October the single III(Stay With Me) was released, preceding the album that appeared the next month. The band set out on a three-month World Crusade I UK/European tour, with their dedicated followers 'Eskimos' in tow. They also appeared on British television a number of times and recorded a session for BBC radio. The single IV (Wasteland) charted at No. 11 in January 1987. The World Crusade II tour brought the band to North America, where they were known as 'The Mission UK'. The 41-date trek was characterised by substance abuse and led to the collapse of an inebriated Craig Adams in Los Angeles, resulting in him temporarily quitting the band. Sound man Pete Turner filled in for one show, before they enlisted the help of Chris Bocast to play bass with them for the remainder of the tour, which included an opening slot for The Psychedelic Furs. In March 1987, the single V (Severina) with a guest vocal from Julianne Regan was released. Back in England, Adams returned to the band to play a handful of European festivals, and two support dates in Leeds and Edinburgh on U2's Joshua Tree Tour. A live video entitled Crusade was released, capturing the band and their noisy audience at the early stage of their career. It coincided with the release of The First Chapter in June 1987, a collection of the material from the first two EPs

On this weeks XS Noize Music Podcast Mark Millar talks to Wayne Hussey from The Mission. The Mission release their new album, “Another Fall From Grace” on 30th September 2016. Another Fall From Grace was produced by Wayne Hussey and Tim Palmer and features guest backing vocals from Gary Numan, Martin Gore (Depeche Mode), Ville Valo (HIM), Julianne Regan (All About Eve) & Evi Vine. “For me, this new Mission album is the long lost missing link between the Sisters Of Mercy's First & Last & Always and The Mission's God's Own Medicine, both albums of course that I was heavily involved in making. I set out this time with the intention of making an album that sounds like 1985. The fact that I feel this has largely been achieved is down to my renewed love for the jingle jangle shimmer of the electric 12 string guitar which featured heavily on those two previously mentioned albums and now the new Mission album.” This weeks featured track is Chick Quest. The initial concept behind Chick Quest was to combine chord progressions from old 60's Italian Western film scores, such as work by Ennio Morricone, with the dancey Post-Punk of the late 70's and early 80's like Talking Heads, B52's, Manicured Noise or The Clash. The band name itself is a nod to cheesy 60's B-film titles and is meant to be taken as “A girl on a quest” as opposed to “Guys on a quest for chicks”. Get in touch: podcast@xsnoize.com
