In this episode I go on a sartorial journey with the celebrated British Milliner Stephen Jones OBE. Jones is considered one of the most radical and important milliners of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. He is also one of the most prolific, having created hats for the catwalk shows of many leading couturiers and fashion designers, from John Galliano, Kim Jones and Maria Grazia Chiuri at Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood, the house of Schiaparelli to Rei Kawakubo at Commes des Garcons. His work is known for its inventiveness and high level of technical expertise. Stephen's hats have adorned Rock Stars and Royalty and way beyond… His major retrospective exhibition opens in October at the Palais Galliera in Paris. Stephen is chatty and has a wonderful way with words, painting pictures as he goes…We discuss jointly dressing the then Meghan Markle for her first Royal engagement when she attended the Commonwealth Service in 2018 with Prince Harry. He shares his insights on the process, the importance of the Royal Family to the world of millinery, and how people the world over use hats and headwear as style signifiers. I ask him to explain his quote “You wear clothes – and hats – to convince yourself and others that you're a certain way. Fashion is still a fabulous, fabulous lie.” …needless to say his answer was both insightful and amusing. Fashion and appearance clearly run deep in Stephen's veins and he talks with such knowledge, intuition and wisdom…and more than a little cheeky humour. I felt privileged, and entertained having this conversation with him. Thank you Stephen for sharing your wit and wisdom.
Greg celebrates the life of 60's French star Françoise Hardy, who died in June at the age of 80. The French singer-songwriter and actress was a leading figure in the 1960s yéyé movement and went on to become a cultural icon in France and worldwide.Songs:Françoise Hardy - “Tous les Garcons et les Filles”Françoise Hardy - “Comment Te Dire Adieu”Françoise Hardy - “Le Temps De L'amour”Jay brings us the breakup story of the Everly Brothers and everything that led up to it. The infamous 1973 concert, where they publicly broke up the group on stage, was the culmination of a decade of decline by the duo. They still rock though.Songs:King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - “Le Risque”Everly Brothers - “All I Have To Do Is Dream”Finally, it's another News with Nick. American Filmmaker Gary Hustwit's has created 52 quintillion documentaries about musician and composer Brian Eno. We celebrate the life and incredible career of the Grammy-winning talent scout Mary Martin, who passed at 85. Finally, the Zappa Family Trust is set to release an Apostrophe box set this September.Song: Cornelius - “Mind Train”

LuckyScent's Steven Gontarski and Dana Buchanan are in the Perfume Room today talking hidden gems of LuckyScent, how to intuit what a client actually wants (versus what they say they want), and a retail phenomenon they refer to as 'perfume trigger words.' We of course also discuss their personal wardrobes/collections including their desert island scents, what's new and exciting them most right now, and why we need to redefine the criteria of what makes a fragrance “GOOD.” FRAGS MENTIONED: Granado Violeta, Marissa Zappas Violette Hay, Escentric Molecules Molecule 05, Commodity Paper +, L'Artisan Musc Amarante, Ella K Poeme de Sagano, Ella K Musc K, Essential Faith: Essential Faith, Bliss, Aura; Nobile 1492 La Danza delle Libellule, Xerjoff Lira, Parle Moi de Parfum Milky Musk, Liis Bo, Parle Moi de Parfum Wake Up World, Juliette Has a Gun Pear Inc., Etat Libre d'Orange Secretions Magnifiques, Prell Shampoo Classic Clean, Guy Laroche Drakkar Noir, Liz Claiborne Claiborne, Davidoff Cool Water, CK One, Jessica McClintock, Annick Goutal Petite Cherie, Princess Marcella Borghese Giardini di Montecatini No. 6, Comme des Garcons, DS & Durga: Bowmaker, Burning Barbershop, Debaser, Mississippi Medicine; Clinique Happy, Celine: Reptile, Black Tie; For Strange Women perfume oils, MCMC Maine, Amouage Fate Woman, Grandiflora, Lubin Korrigan, Profumum Roma Acqua e Zucchero, Montale Chocolate Greedy, Anamor All that Matters, Chasing Scents: Rain Tea, Tea Service; MFK: Aqua Media, Aqua Universalis; Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Herba Fresca, Ella K Poeme de Sagano, Eau D'Italie: Morn to Dusk, Jardin du Poete, Rosa Greta; Universal Flowering Holy Hell, Dior Bois D'Argent, Comme des Garcons Lily, Astier de Villatte Mantes la Jolie, Oriza L. Ada Martini Strøm er forfatter av boken "Green Glam: Kunsten å leve grønt og beholde stilen samtidig". Ada gir konkrete råd til hvordan motvirke overforbruk, fremsnakker Eftir i Oslo og Remake Our World. Hosted on Acast.

Have you seen those beautiful, colorful bottles of Method Soap at Target? They're most likely the work of today's guest, Lisa Congdon, who is one of the world's most recognizable graphic designers, a fine artist, and an illustrator who creates for clients such as Amazon, Comme des Garcons, Crate & Barrel, REI, and MoMA.

In this episode we're chatting with French Perfumer - Antoine Lie Antoine is an accomplished Perfumer that loves to create without constraints or restrictions, he values the true creative and organic process and he believes that the scent should take you to places and emotions you've never experienced before… Antoine Lie was raised in Strasbourg, France, where he studied chemistry before moving to Grasse to study fragrance at Givaudan under Jean Carles. After an apprenticeship to famous teaching master Jean Guichard, Antoine spent time in both France and the United States, where he was involved in developing worldwide hit fragrances such as Armani Code and Versace Crystal Noir, but a yearning for greater creative freedom led him away from the big companies and towards the niche houses where he would be allowed to pursue his own vision of straightforward, yet unconventional fragrances. He has worked with many renowned brands - Burberry, Comme des Garcons, Costume National, Davidoff, Zegna, Etat Libre d'Orange.… Just to name a few. ‘'The number of yearly launches have increased in such a way that brands went from creating unique artisanal fragrances to working like machines pumping new releases almost daily…'' -Antoine LieTOPICS: His path in becoming a proficient and unconventional perfumerFrom Artisanal creations to Commercial Social Media Boom! For this episode we caught up with Cintra Wilson, one of our absolute favorite writers, the former Critical Shopper for the New York Times, the author of several books of cultural criticism, a one-time StyleZeitgeist magazine contributor, the mother of our most favorite phrase that keyboard ever put onto computer screen, "If Marni is post-sex, Comme des Garcons is post reason," and an all around brilliant punk. We talk about her tenure at the New York Times, her breathtaking metaphors and inimitable sense of humor, and touch a bit on fashion semiotics. This one is a must for any aspiring fashion writer.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/stylezeitgeist)

One of his most famous stories describes the Christmas David Sedaris dressed up as an elf when he worked at Macy’s Santaland. Since then, Sedaris has written essays that are about what it was like to grow up in a family of 6 kids in Raleigh, North Carolina, his drug using days and his obsessive behaviors like walking 43 miles in one day and picking up trash in England. Sedaris also talks about why he likes to prowl New York City’s streets after midnight and the current whereabouts of his new ruffled Comme des Garcons jacket. “Now What?” is produced with the help of Steve Zimmer, Tay Glass and Alex Wolfe. Audio production is by Nick Ciavatta. David Sedaris photo by Ingrid Christie.

THE DIRTY 30! Episode XXX! In this unusually family-friendly ep we have our second epic interview in as many weeks, but this time it's with the future captain of industry; he who will inherit the earth: A 9 YEAR OLD BOY, a student, who is an only child, with divorced parents, giving us his take on Melbourne's endless LOCKDOWN GULAG and how 5% of his life has been spent. You might be surprised... Since BEES are the barometer of WTF is going on with the planet, it's time to watch the barometric pressure rise as Honey Bees make way smarter decisions than you, have threesomes and bee orgies, and make decisive action on exactly where they want to go out and party and eat---just like you! Japan is a conundrum: They bring us grotesquely bad humans like the face that sank 1000 ships, Mazie Hirono, who probably sank The Arizona just by looking at it in Pearl Harbour. But they also bring us great culture, food, and especially epic clothing and superstars like Junya Watanabe and my long-time fave Commes de Garcons.... in case you wondered why I look especially epic this week in WHAT YOUR PODCASTER IS WEARING. They also (Japan) make epic whisky as you know, but this week I'm drinking the best SCOTCH WHISKY on the planet, and we'll open a flagon together. Ever since Efrem Zimbalist, Jr died and took all the good agents with him (other than the ones in SILENCE OF THE LAMBS) there's been a lot of reason to not trust the FBI, especially since they conspired with the CIA to spy on the Republican election campaign in 2016 when weaponized by the dark witch and Barry. But Clint Eastwood's latest movie shows how they can really fuck up your life if they suspect you of something you never did if they need a victim and you fit the profile. There's nothing like a good sex trafficking series to relax the family and The Vow is the hottest brand in town. Check out a local Aussie film from a few years ago that no one saw but is worth hunting down about the white Aussie guy on the podium at Mexico City with Black Power Gloved Tommy Smith and John Carlos. Come watch with me... The heavy MARS energy and NEPTUNE impulses in our charts this week has put extreme psychic visions and ridiculous comfort food in our lives. I'm a takin' you to Harlem to pig out on WAFFLES and FRIEND CHICKEN at Silvia's Soul Kitchen and you will thank me! Plus all your regular faves and make sure the whole family listens to this one..or else. :) #MarieBrenner #ClintEastwood #SamRockwell #uesquebach #Whisky #Scotch #KentAlexander #kevinSalwen #RichardJewell #TheVow #KeithRaniere #SylviasSoulFood #Mars #Neptune #Salute #DavidRedman #instinctEntertainment #RogerNorman #Prada #Acne #SylviaWoods #commesDeGarcon #junyawatanabe #mazieHirono #CoreyBooker #AmyConeyBryant #ACB #SupremeCourt #DanielAndrews #Lockdown #Bees #CIA #FBI #DanBongino #monsterDome #DavidLittlejohn #BruceLee #BeWaterMyFriend #shannonLee #EnterTheDragon #ChelseaCook #TheConversation OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Photo by: John Nacion/STAR MAX/IPx 2020 10/5/20 A view of Regal Cinema in Times Square, New York City on October 5, 2020. Tony Newsham came from the United Kingdom in the early 1970s not knowing what to do as a career. Five years later, he opened Trellini in Melbourne and later in Sydney. After almost 20 years forging a path, Newsham went onto become Vice President of Comme des Garcons in New York, where he resided for 13 years. An extraordinary fashion trajectory!

#Cunningham #AllaKovgan #iTalkMovies On this edition of iTalk Movies Frank Moran interviews Alla Kovgan and Jennifer Goggans on their new Documentary "Cunningham". CUNNINGHAM traces Merce's artistic evolution over three decades of risk and discovery (1944-1972), from his early years as a struggling dancer in postwar New York to his emergence as one of the world's most visionary choreographers. During a lifetime of artistic engagement with such diverse musicians as John Cage, Erik Satie and Radiohead, visual artists Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollack, architect Benedetta Tagliabue, Comme des Garcons fashion designer Rei Kawakubo, and over one hundred of the world's leading dancers, Cunningham created a new dance technique and celebrated movement as manifestation of being human and of being alive. Kovgan has created a 93-minute art piece through a dynamic combination of his fascinating life experiences with landmark artistic achievements, creating a delicate balance between facts and metaphors, exposition and poetry. On this Episode I got to sit down in a kitchen in little rock Arkansas and get the whole story from Goon des Garcons. Who recently signed with Def Jam records and Tan the Terrible. These two took the journey out to L.A. to make the ultimate effort. To give up everything and go for the gold. Needless to say it paid off. Here you can get the whole story from starting in little rock and pine bluff. Putting on shows and playing shows. Trying to build their own path. Keeping everything DIY. TO when they decided to make the leap out to California and how long it took and the sacrifice it took to make it to where they are now. Goon has just released his new ep under Def Jam "Cheers to the end of the World" If you haven't yet I strongly urge you to go check that out. I had a blast hanging out with these guys and I have to say thank you guys for taking time out of your very busy schedule to have a sit down with me.

Who doesn’t love a sleeper hit? Among the cacophony of beauty launches, meet the indie brand that’s managed to quietly cut through the clutter to amass a niche group of devoted beauty fans. We sit down with makeup artist Kirsten Kjaer Weis, who tells us all about the vision for her eponymous cosmetics range that’s both ultra-luxury and certified organic—not to mention entirely re-fillable. Seven years in the making, Kjaer Weiss launched in 2010 to heaps of magazine write-ups, thanks in part to its beyond-beautiful packaging (designed by the mastermind behind Comme des Garcons’ chic AF fragrances, Marc Atlan.) It quickly became a cult favourite amongst the models who were often in Kirsten’s makeup chair, celebrities like Emma Watson and makeup artists like Katey Denno. The reason? High performance makeup that could compete with conventional makeup brands—without any irritating toxins. Kjaer Weis has been often called upon by the likes of Marie Claire and Self magazines, for her ability to make skin look flawless and utterly natural all at once. In this episode, you’ll get an earful on the best-selling mascara and foundation, plus, Kirsten’s pro tips for nailing that woke-up-like-this-but-better base. Stay tuned until the very end and you’ll also get the scoop on Kirsten’s growing foray into the world of skincare, with two top shelf-worthy products in stores this month. In episode 47 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed considering working for free, the relevance of stoicism to the photographer, and the importance of retaining photographic integrity to work within advertising photography. Plus this week Grant re-visits a recorded conversation he had with legendary fashion and portrait photographer Paolo Roversi in London in 2011. Born in Ravenna, Italy in 1947, Paolo Roversi's interest in photography was kindled as a teenager during a family vacation in Spain in 1964. On returning home, he set up a darkroom in a cellar with another keen amateur, the local postman Battista Minguzzi, and Paolo began developing and printing his own black & white work. In 1970 he began working with the Associated Press and on his first assignment, was sent to cover the poet and writer Ezra Pound's funeral in Venice. During the same year he opened, with his friend Giancarlo Gramantieri his first portrait studio, located in Ravenna, photographing local celebrities and their families. In 1971 by chance he met the legendary Art Director of Elle magazine Peter Knapp and at Knapp's invitation, Paolo visited Paris in 1973 and he has never left. In Paris he started working as a reporter but gradually, began to approach fashion photography. The British photographer Lawrence Sackmann took Paolo on as his assistant in 1974 but after just nine months he started out on his own with small commissions for magazines such as Elle and Depeche Mode before Marie Claire magazine published his first major fashion story. A Christian Dior beauty campaign brought him wider recognition in 1980, the year he started using the 8" x 10” Polaroid format that would become his trademark. During the 1980s the fashion industry started to produce catalogues which allowed photographers to express creative and personal work and designers such as Comme des Garcons, Yohji Yamamoto, and Romeo Gigli gave Paolo that opportunity. Since the the 80's his work has been subject to many exhibitions and books and he has received many awards for his work. Today Paolo is a regular contributor and collaborator with the most interesting and influential fashion designers and fashion magazines around the world. www.paoloroversi.com You can also access and subscribe to these podcasts at SoundCloud https://soundcloud.com/unofphoto on iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/a-photographic-life/id1380344701 on Player FM https://player.fm/series/a-photographic-life and Podbean www.podbean.com/podcast-detail/i6uqx-6d9ad/A-Photographic-Life-Podcast Grant Scott is the founder/curator of United Nations of Photography, a Senior Lecturer in Professional Photography at the University of Gloucestershire, a working photographer, and the author of Professional Photography: The New Global Landscape Explained (Focal Press 2014) and The Essential Student Guide to Professional Photography (Focal Press 2015).

How did a boy from the Australian backwoods get to make his celluloid dreams come true? Hardtalk's Stephen Sackur speaks to director Baz Luhrmann who made his name with a wildly entertaining debut movie called Strictly Ballroom. It was theatrical, sentimental and sweet, and became a hit around the world. Since then he has continued to make larger than life films combining dazzling visuals and epic stories. Welcome to What's The Matter With Me? Podcast Episode 22, "Gallons, Untied Shoes, Commes des garcons/Rei Kawakubo, Surplus Store Shopping" In this episode: New hot sauce size -- Disaster: Shoes came untied -- Changes in disability is like wearing Rei Kawakubo/Commes des garcons clothes -- A good time shopping at the surplus store New hot sauce size Hoppin Hot Sauce now comes in gallons, for my foodservice clients. It's so they can re-use bottles. Disaster: Shoes came untied My shoes came untied durinf my radio show and my cohost untied them. He was older than me, and it was thought provoking. Changes in disability is like wearing Rei Kawakubo/Commes des garcons clothes It's ungainly and strange; people look at you funny. No one, including myself, knows quite what to do. I read some commentary about the avant-garde fashion designer Rei Kawakubo and I found commonality with my experience as a disabled person. A good time shopping at the surplus store I went shopping with my family at the surplus store. We got a lot of things that we needed, it wasn't too difficult. My family helped me a lot.
