Domino: Communication-Free LLM Training Engine // MLOps Podcast #278 with Guanhua "Alex" Wang, Senior Researcher at Microsoft. // Abstract Given the popularity of generative AI, Large Language Models (LLMs) often consume hundreds or thousands of GPUs to parallelize and accelerate the training process. Communication overhead becomes more pronounced when training LLMs at scale. To eliminate communication overhead in distributed LLM training, we propose Domino, which provides a generic scheme to hide communication behind computation. By breaking the data dependency of a single batch training into smaller independent pieces, Domino pipelines these independent pieces of training and provides a generic strategy of fine-grained communication and computation overlapping. Extensive results show that compared with Megatron-LM, Domino achieves up to 1.3x speedup for LLM training on Nvidia DGX-H100 GPUs. // Bio Guanhua Wang is a Senior Researcher in the DeepSpeed team at Microsoft. His research focuses on large-scale LLM training and serving. Previously, he led the ZeRO++ project at Microsoft which helped reduce over half of model training time inside Microsoft and Linkedin. In this week's episode, I'm sharing everyday hacks for a better life, my candle warmer fiasco, a toilet paper would you rather, and answering your questions!Q: Methods/strategies for curbing late night hunger and cravings??Q: In what situations could someone be tracking food as perfectly as possible and still not lose weight in a deficit?Q: Overshot my maintenance cals and started to gain a bit of weight (so far have gained 2 lbs but cont to trend up). To lose it, should I go into deficit again, or just pull back slightly on cals to go to maintenance?Q: Struggling to get back into the swing of things after pregnancy. What are some realistic non-negotiables to feel better?Q: I have finally hit my rock bottom. I cannot take being in the shape I am in anymore and even when my anxiety tells me otherwise - I truly want to change and love myself more. What would be the top advice nutritionally you'd give to someone to start implementing (realistic ones to not overwhelm).Q: At what point do you have to stop with the excuses and just do what you need to be done in order to lose weight?Q: Weights needed to get close to failure on big lower body lifts are so heavy now that it feels mentally daunting to keep pushing progressive overload. Reageren? This interview is inspired by one of the most incredible stories I have ever read. My special guest is Qat Wanders who's here to discuss her book about her early experiences traveling the world and the dangers she encountered with the female she loved.  Get Her Book: Searching For Venus: A Vagabond Lesbian Memoir "A gripping combination of sexuality and spirituality . . . It's easy to see pieces of ourselves shining through this compelling story that centers on the struggle for inner peace." Spiritual Biz Magazine Searching For Venus is a powerful and inspirational story about one woman's quest to find fulfillment in the face of adversity. After growing up with traditional Jewish influence, Qat falls head over heels when she meets an African-American gypsy girl who changes her life forever. Travel and wanderlust become their new teachers by showing them both so much about themselves along their journey that will transform the way they see the world. With unforgettable real-life characters across different cultures throughout the US, Europe, and India; this eloquent exploration deals candidly yet humorously with religious bigotry, racism, grief and loss, and the importance of overcoming obstacles to make us stronger. This story has been described as "a call to the courageous and the wanderer in all of us" and "a love letter to Life" that encourages people to trust their abundance. With Searching For Venus: A Vagabond Lesbian Memoir, author Qatarina Wanders has crafted an inspiring tale of self-discovery, based on true events, that will resonate with anyone who has ever dared to dream big._________________________________Qatarina Wanders unabashedly traces her journey through the lens of a young woman searching for meaning within disruption. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: A Report on running 1-1s with EA Virtual Programs' Participants, published by Elika on January 10, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. TL;DR: We trialed two rounds of 1-1s and, in total, connected 44 EA VP introductory participants with members of the EA community, focusing on mid-career professionals and early-career professionals/students interested in making career decisions related to EA. We're still a bit uncertain, but generally feel positive about the cost-effectiveness and value of organising 1-1s with VP introductory participants . Our results suggest that 1-1s are providing a decent amount of value and are generally highly enjoyed by participants. We're unsure on the longer term effects of 1-1s on engagement in EA. More specifically, here's our initial research questions and the answers we found: Q: How valuable are 1-1s with EA community members for Intro participants or is there any demand for 1-1s? A: There is strong demand for 1-1s and it seems like 1-1s are valuable for VP participants. We asked "how would people feel if they weren't able to do 1-1s", 21% said they would be very disappointed, which is 19% short from the 40% benchmark. Although it's short of the 40% benchmark, on average 1-1s are rated 8.2/10. This makes us feel a little more confident that some 1-1s can be valuable. We anecdotally think they are valuable because it helps expand their network and exposes them to more of the community. Q: How cost-effective or impactful are 1-1s in the context of EA VP? A: We feel somewhat uncertain about the cost-effectiveness of 1-1s, but we think that 1-1s with VP participants are ~3x as cost efficient as an EAG in leading to connections, but only 1/20 as scalable. Some notes on impact: 1-1s are very hits-based, impact can take a long time and it's hard to measure counterfactual impact. Q: What types of 1-1s are most valuable (ex. career focused ones, general EA ones, social, etc)? A: We think that both career-focused and general networking 1-1s are valuable. Career ones for helping people be open to changes, meet others and get advice. General 1-1s to expand people's network and to serve as practice for reaching out to community members. Q: What type of mentors doing the 1-1s are best suited? A: We found a broad range of ‘mentors' to do 1-1s – mentors who are very knowledgeable about EA and sociable (such as community builders) rate highly. Cause-area specific mentors (e.g. an experienced grant-maker for someone working in philanthropy, an AI safety researcher for someone working as a software engineer) to talk about specific career paths are extremely valuable as well. Q: What ‘type' of participant are these most valuable for? E.g. mid-career professionals, those open to changing careers / jobs, students, people near to EA hubs, etc. A: We're very excited about mid-career professionals who are interested in changing careers and jobs. We also think social 1-1's are valuable for anyone highly interested in EA to help them expand their network. A future research direction is to expand the number of VP participants who are offered a 1-1 – primarily test participants whose VP application we were less excited about. Q: At what stage of the fellowship is it most valuable (beginning, middle, end, after, etc)? A: We don't think 1-1s at the beginning of the fellowship is best. We're generally uncertain on whether there's a difference between middle, end, and after. It's either pretty equal or we need to do more tests. Q: Are repeated 1-1s, maybe some form of mentorship, more valuable than one-off 1-1s? A: We didn't manage to test repeated 1-1s or mentorship. That's a potential future research direction. We have a few main future goals and paths. Find ways to streamline the 1-1 process on CEA's side to make it easier to scale to all of VP Run some more speci...

Where do those talks stand now and do you believe the disbanding of the GVRT had anything to do with the spike in shootings?Wheeler: The spike that we’re seeing in gun violence and homicides is definitely the city’s top public safety priority right now. First, we’re working on the prevention and intervention side. We have increased the funding through the Office of Violence Prevention that helps us establish more community interactions and work with organizations throughout the community to help reduce gun violence. Today, joining me is Qat Wanders, an author, editor, and speaker, and a successful self-publishing school student. She has published numerous books in both the fiction and non-fiction categories. We are going to dive into her story and how she used books to build her seven-figure business. She found the traditional publishing route very time-consuming and painful. Qat decided she wanted to move to self-publishing. Dealing with severe chronic pain and looking to work from home. “I was doing freelance writing and editing, then I stumbled across a webinar from Self-Publishing School and signed up for it immediately.” She signed up for SPS intending to get her first book self-published. “Days after I joined, my dad called me and told me he had three months to live.” Her dad’s dying wish was to hold her book in his hands, and he wanted to see her become a bestseller. She decided to switch from her memoir to writing a book about yoga. Qat had her book published in 29 days. Her book became a bestseller, and her dad held the book in his hands a week before he passed away. Qat’s daughter was eight when she came up with a fiction storyline, which she helped her daughter, Ora, turn into a published book. Her final book was a 400-page fantasy novel. However, the process was long; her daughter published, and her book became a big success at school, with her teachers and her social media following. Her advice to parents when helping your child write a book, “Be encouraging. There’s a fine line between encouraging and nagging.” “I’d say my writing has improved the more I learn. Because the more you edit, the more you learn.” She is very familiar with the genres of the books she has coming out, which gives her specific areas to focus on while editing. In this episode, I talk with Leah Evans about activism, skiing, allyship, meditation, and the importance of sport. Leah Evans started Girls Do Ski in 2008 while also attending university and working to become a professional skier. Since then, her business, her ski career, and her activism have become the cornerstones of a super diverse and fascinating life. Originally from Rossland, British Columbia, Leah has lived in Revelstoke, home of some of the most epic backcountry lines, for 12 years. In the summer, she's an Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) hiking guide, and in the winters she's fully hands-on with all-women backcountry and resort skiing clinics she creates with Girls Do Ski. Leah is a champion of wild places and was deeply involved in the Jumbo Wild project–one of a growing list of successful land protection stories–which helped protect natural grizzly habitat and Ktunaxa Nation land, from the development of a ski resort. Earlier this year, the Ktunaxa Nation, with Federal and Provincial governments, declared the Qat'muk Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area, forever protecting Jumbo. She's also a native seed keeper, avid reader, and volunteer with Wildsight. “Make a decision and go for it. Acceptance & Forgiveness - Forgiving Other People & Forgiving Ourselves    Kyla Edwards  Self Mastery Coach, she helps women overcome negative thinking & self doubt  One-on-one coaching program called “Elevate”    Q: What was your story of Self-Mastery & Forgiveness?    I grew up in a very white environment in the Caribbean, I'm mixed race  From an early age, I struggled with acceptance  I wanted to be white like everyone else around me My mother's partner was abusive to me.  I really resented myself, I had a lot of guilt & shame  I wanted to be anyone other than myself The environment I grew up in was very turbulent. It didn't feel safe to be who I was or show emotion  I grew up resenting myself & who I was, including my sexuality  I couldn't look myself in the eye. I got into unhealthy behaviors, and I had a deep sense of loneliness & not feeling fulfilled.   I would do whatever I could to avoid that pain inside  I was in a 5 year relationship, and when that ended I went even deeper into the pain & my addiction intensified I had an incident where I got in trouble with the police, and that was the beginning of my path of change, my awakening  I moved to Australia with the hope of starting a better life  I said a prayer, asked for help, and my recovery process started It was a journey of going back to my childhood & letting go of resentment, accepting who I am  Now I'm proud of who I am, I own my story  We've all done things to hurt others, we just may not be aware of them  I want to help others understand and grow awareness of their inner world and how their thoughts & actions affect others    Q:  When you were at that crucial time, and you chose the process of self-discovery, what was it that really helped you go inwards & heal?    A:  Connecting to a higher power, something that was far greater than me  Looking at my story, realizing that it had happened in my past and I couldn't do anything about it.  It was done  Realizing that all I could think about was what was happening in the present moment  I wanted to be a better person, I didn't want to feel lonely and empty anymore What I was doing wasn't working. Nothing was changing, I was repeating the same mistakes  I knew it was time that I had to do something different  I started to take action to work with source  I started to look at why I was afraid, and what my contribution was to the resentment or fear (accountability)  I started understanding which point in the process I contributed to my own problem  I stopped seeing myself as the victim In the beginning it was a lot of letting go of resentment, and now it's more of a soul journey    Q:  I can feel that the acceptance piece was such a huge part of your evolution. What do you feel acceptance is, and forgiveness is?    A:  Acceptance is the sense of belonging to yourself Accepting the parts of yourself that you want to hide away or reject  Accept your current situation as it is, even the parts that you'd rather not admit  Understanding that who you are & what you're experiencing right now is what you're meant to experience.  Letting go of attachment to the outcome and to the emotion.  Forgiveness brings inner peace & joy  If you can't forgive somebody, that's the ego-mind seeing it as a sign of weakness  Really, forgiveness is letting go of anger. It's acknowledging that something happened, but you're not going to let it hurt you anymore. Understanding that others are in pain, or they wouldn't have done the things that they did  Look at things with compassion  Make a decision not to let the anger & resentment control you anymore  If you hang on to pain, you're literally re-traumatizing yourself over and over again  It takes courage to let go  If you want space for new energy to enter, you have to forgive When you forgive, it's surrendering your ego, practicing humility & aligning more with your true nature  Forgiveness is probably one of the most important teachings to be able to create a new life for yourself    Q:  At what point do we completely accept, or at what point do we try to transcend or change our energy?    A:  When I was trying to change my emotions, I wasn't able to feel the more vulnerable feelings.  What I've learned is that sometimes I need to just sit in the feeling & accept it  Sometimes I ask my body/emotions questions: “What are you trying to tell me? What is your message?” I practice acknowledging what is within me without getting too attached to it  You can practice soul healing  Sometimes initially, the practice is really feeling into whatever is there It took me a while to get that. For a while, I used spirituality as another addiction to avoid my emotions    Q:  It reminds me of the saying “You've got to feel to heal”. I want to move into forgiveness now. How can people actually forgive? Events & people outside of themselves, as well as themselves?    A:  This is a long term practice  I think one of the key things is forgiving from your heart  If it's coming from the head, it can still have toxic energy I started by writing a letter to people who had hurt me, and told them how they actually made me feel.  To get my feelings that I may have repressed out  I didn't send the letters  Forgiveness practice:  I started to talk to the other person's soul.  I would just start speaking, and allow whatever was in my heart to come out  I started to wish for the people who had hurt me the same things I wish for myself.  Even in the beginning if you don't believe it, keep going through the process  When you forgive someone, you let them go & they no longer have ownership over you  For me, it's taken years  You know you've forgiven someone when there's no emotional reaction when someone mentions that person's name to you  For me, I believe in the law of karma, so I also apologize to them Forgiveness is letting emotions out instead of letting it fester inside  You can also say a prayer and ask the Universe for forgiveness  Even if it's intense in the beginning, by the end there is a sense of freedom The Law of Attraction will only bring to you what resonates with your vibration If you hold on to resentment & anger, that's what you'll attract back  It's become an important part of my daily practice to recognize when I make mistakes and do a forgiveness practice    Q:   How are you helping women through your Elevate Program?  I love your description of “Purging the Past” Can you tell us a bit more about the program?    A:  13 week program  I'm a certified emotional coach  I use applied kinesiology (muscle testing) & channeling  We look at entities and past lives  We'll start to look through your fields, emotion codes  We'll release the heart wall - a protective wall that can restrict your flow of abundance  I like to test to see where your self-esteem sits on the scale of consciousness  If your vibration is low, we'll start to release blockages Workable content: Self compassion, acceptance, forgiveness letters  Worksheets to look/reflect on yourself  You have everything you need within you, this is a practice to cut away what's blocking you from your own power Compassion, acceptance, forgiveness We'll break down fears & start to make them rational  I connect with source and give soul guidance  Start being able to look at things from a different perspective Practicing gratitude Transforming old negative messages into positive messages Teaching people how to be aware of what's going on in their internal world  Checking abundance levels & blocks  It's a process from the past, to reset the mind, and check your magnetism to what's you're attracting  Learn exactly where you're at, so you know exactly what you need to do  LINKS:    Free Breakthrough Calls - Learn more about working with Kyla - https://awakenher.as.me/   Instagram - www.instagram.com/awaken_her_with_love

Harvest Bible Chapel Pittsburgh North Sermons - Harvest Bible Chapel Pittsburgh North

Note: The time signatures [00:00] below indicate the start of a question if you'd like to skip to a particular one of interest in the audio file.[02:53] - Q: When was Jesus born? Why do we celebrate on December 25th?[03:54] - Q: Is celebrating Christmas ordained or supported by scripture?[06:17] - LIVE AUDIENCE Q: I have a friend who is young in her faith yet she got a tarot card reading. I’ve been mentoring her about her faith and she also has a young daughter. I’m trying to figure out the best way to talk to her about these tarot cards and she’s also asking about her horoscope. How would you confront her in a loving way about this.A: See 1 Peter[08:23] - Q: I believe that an important aspect of the virgin birth is that in order for Jesus to be sinless, He needed to be free from Adam’s sin. I think that Adam's sin is perpetuated in humanity through the seed of man. By being conceived by the Holy Spirit instead of the seed of a man, Jesus was not conceived with Adam's original sin and can start completely sinless. Do you agree?A: Yes![09:33] - Q: What is HBC principle on tithe and offering?A: See 2 Cor 8:3 - For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord…2 Cor 8:12 - For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have.2 Cor 9:7 - Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.Re-listen to the I Love to Give sermon series on God’s view of money.[16:16] - Q: God is always referred as 'He' and 'Father'. Does this gender pronoun and title refer to a physical characteristic of God of His relationship with us? I.E. If the Holy Spirit is God; should we refer to it (Holy Spirit) as 'He'? Typically we don't assign a gender pronoun to spirits in the English language unless were able to assign the spirit to a person's gender.[19:06] - Q: Why does God forbid women to be an “elder” or hold some authority in church?A: See 1 Timothy 2:12-14 - I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.[24:45] - LIVE AUDIENCE Q: Can you help me understand the verse (James 2:17, 22-24), “faith without works is dead”? Doesn’t that contradict what we’re taught to believe that we’re just fine “saved” through faith and not works as it says in Romans?[29:44] - Q: If we came from Adam and Eve shouldn't we all have the same last name and be the same family?A: See Acts 17:26 - And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place…[32:52] - LIVE TXT Q: How do we guard ourselves against legalism? I.E. If I abstain from drinking, how do I guard against pressing others to not drink or get self-righteous or prideful in my abstinence?[36:46] - Q: Where did Cain's wife come from?A: See: Genesis 3:20 - The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.Genesis 5:4 - The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years; and he had other sons and daughters.[37:58] - Q: At what point during a human's development is it "issued" a soul? At conception? Sometime while in the womb? Or at the baby's first breathe?A: See Luke 1:41 - And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit…Psalm 139:13 - For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb.[39:44] - LIVE TXT Q: If John knew when the rapture happened (when God showed him) why doesn't it say in the Bible when the rapture will happen?A: Soon!Any question that was missed due to time constraints during the service Pastor Jeff will address the answer on the blog.Sermon Notes (PDF): BLANKHint: Highlight blanks above for answers! Sahih al-Bukhari – The Book of Tawheed – Lesson 62 (15/09/18) Narrated Usama: A son of one of the daughters of the Prophet was dying, so she sent a person to call the Prophet. He sent (her a message), "What ever Allah takes is for Him, and whatever He gives is for Him, and everything has a limited fixed term (in this world) so she should be patient and hope for Allah's reward." She then sent for him again, swearing that he should come. Allah's Apostle got up, and so did Mu'adh bin Jabal, Ubai bin Ka'b and 'Ubada bin As-Samit. When he entered (the house), they gave the child to Allah's Apostle while its breath was disturbed in his chest. (The subnarrator said: I think he said, "...as if it was a water skin.") Allah's Apostle started weeping whereupon Sa'd bin 'Ubada said, "Do you weep?" The Prophet said, "Allah is merciful only to those of His slaves who are merciful (to others). Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "Paradise and Hell (Fire) quarrelled in the presence of their Lord. Paradise said, 'O Lord! What is wrong with me that only the poor and humble people enter me ?' Hell (Fire) said, I have been favored with the arrogant people.' So Allah said to Paradise, 'You are My Mercy,' and said to Hell, 'You are My Punishment which I inflict upon whom I wish, and I shall fill both of you.'" The Prophet added, "As for Paradise, (it will be filled with good people) because Allah does not wrong any of His created things, and He creates for Hell (Fire) whomever He will, and they will be thrown into it, and it will say thrice, 'Is there any more, till Allah (will put) His Foot over it and it will become full and its sides will come close to each other and it will say, 'Qat! Qat! Qat! (Enough! Enough! Enough!) . Narrated Anas: The Prophet said, "Some people who will be scorched by Hell (Fire) as a punishment for sins they have committed, and then Allah will admit them into Paradise by the grant of His Mercy. These people will be called, 'AlJahannamiyyLin' (the people of Hell). Narrated 'Abdullah: A Jewish Rabbi came to Allah's Apostle and said, "O Muhammad! Allah will put the Heavens on one finger and the earth on one finger, and the trees and the rivers on one finger, and the rest of the creation on one finger, and then will say, pointing out with His Hand, 'I am the King.' "On that Allah's Apostle smiled and said, "No just estimate have they made of Allah such as due to Him. TOM FLYNN on: - Facebook: www.facebook.com/Tom.Flynn.Music.Page - SoundCloud: @tomflynnmusic HOW I MET THE BASS on: - Facebook: www.facebook.com/howimetthebass - Twitter: www.twitter.com/howimetthebass - Mixcloud: www.mixcloud.com/HowIMetTheBass 3 QUESTIONS to TOM FLYNN: Q: Your mix is a journey from the past to the present. What do these older tracks still mean to you? A: They symbolise important moments in my life, times where they made me really appreciate the power and emotion of music and how it can transcend anything. I have to say this is one of the best mix ideas i’ve been asked to do. I knew some of the tracks I would select and I've been keeping some in mind the last few weeks. I tried to go from the earliest up to the last few years, it’s impossible to get in all you want but the records I've chosen have always stood out for me and hold a special place in my heart. Q: At the end of your set you´re representing your latest release. Please tell us more about. A: I wrote those tracks a long time ago, one of them I wrote about 3 or 4 years ago, but i knew I liked them. I forgot about them for a while, then I was going through some tracks and found them, I took them with me on holiday and I thought ok I like these, especially pluck. Later that night I saw a flyer for Steve Bug on a wall, he was playing and I thought ok I should send them him, he might like them. The Pluck track I think was really influenced by me listening to a lot of electronic jazz at the time, I like making things that are out of time, things that don’t really make sense. The other 2 tracks were tracks I’d wrote a while back and I just liked them, they’re not like the stuff I’m writing now but they spoke to me in some fashion, and with Steve saying he liked them I thought ok that’s cool, I respect Steve and that means a lot so lets do it. Q: Which further projects are coming in 2018? A: I have an EP on Carl Craigs label, Planet e, as well as something coming on Maceo Plex’s label, we’re just deciding if it will be Ellum or Lone Romantic. There’s also another track on a Fabric compilation I’ve just signed which nobody has heard yet. I’m hoping to release more on my own label, Into Orbit, later this year too. I’m sitting on a lot of new music!

ParentingAces - The Junior Tennis and College Tennis Podcast

We all know what mental toughness is and have likely heard various ways in which to train tennis players to do better in this realm. There are many methods and many mental coaches out there, several of whom have been featured on the ParentingAces website and podcast over the years. In this week's episode, Frank Giampaolo introduces his new book, Neuro Priming for Peak Performance (click here for more information), and helps us understand what exactly neuro priming is all about. I'm very intrigued by this method of getting in the mental zone before any type of stressful situation and will be interested to hear your thoughts on whether this approach could be successful with your player(s)! As I mention in the podcast, Frank has generously offered a free copy of his Match Chart Collection for the ParentingAces audience. Click here to get yours! You can find this and all of Frank's books on the ParentingAces website here. "I've been friends with Frank since I was a junior. His outside the box approach to organizing the often secret mental, emotional components is ground breaking. Neuro Priming is no exception." -- Stevie Johnson, ATP Professional "This book is going to transform the way athletes around the globe prepare for competition. It's a must read for every athlete, parent and coach. -- Johan Kriek, 2- Time Grand slam Champion  "Amazing new book! The best players intuitively learn their game then have to relearn it when things go astray. Neuro Priming For Peak Performance is a game changer." -- Peter Smith: USC Men's Coach The following is taken from Frank's enewsletter, and I thought it would be of interest to my listeners/readers: Cali Jankowski Age Started: 9 years old First Tournament: 10 years old Residence: Southern California Notable Results: 14’s Winter National Champion 14’s Intersectional National Champions Team Member 2 Time Henry Talbert Winner 16’s Intersectional National 2nd Place Team Member 16’s National Clay Courts 5th Place 16’s National Selection Winner 18’s Yamasaki Winner 18’s Mike Agassi No Quit Winner 18’s Ojai Winner 18’s National Selection Winner 18’s National Clay Courts 4th Place 18’s Stanford Eve Zimmerman/Johnson National Winner   NOTE TO THE NEXT GENERATION: An In-depth Interview with SCTA #1 Cali Jankowski  Q: At what age did you begin your SCTA tournament career?  A: I was ten years old when I played my first ever tennis tournament. It was a small, round-robin tournament at a local high school. I didn’t come home with any hardware but definitely caught the competitive bug.   Q: Did you belong to a multi-generational tennis family or did your parents have to learn right along with you?  A: Not in the slightest! My dad played in high school and my mom played in ladies league. Neither of them had any idea what the world of competitive junior tennis was like. As a family, we were constantly learning something new about what to do and what not to do.   Q: How did they navigate the junior tennis wars? A:  It was a lot of trial and error for them. We had zero connections to the tennis world, so we had to find out for ourselves what coaches and clinics were most beneficial by trying. This meant trying a place for a few weeks and then deciding whether or not to move on or stay. My parents always had my best interest at heart and knew that there would be a good coach out there to refine my skills; it was just a matter of stumbling across that club or coach.   Q: In the 12’s, were you getting the results you believed you were capable of achieving?  A: I was awful in the 10’s and early 12’s. I didn’t win my first Open Tournament until I was 12. I believe this was because I played very differently from my opponents- I was a hard hitter. I fell in love with tennis because it was so fun to hit the ball really hard, so anytime I came across a pusher (Like in every tournament!), I would collapse mentally, and my strokes would fall apart. I don’t think I was getting the results I was capable of. While my first coach was a firm believer in making sure I stuck to my aggressive style, he never gave me the tools I needed to take down pushers/retrievers. This was my biggest downfall.   Q: What came easily to you in the 14's... what proved more difficult? A:  I definitely started to make strides once I hit 13 or so. I was adding more dimensions to my game and adjusting my training to quality over quantity. At my peak in the 14’s, I reached about top 10 in SoCal. I was starting to understand what it took to beat any style of player. However, this mindset was very inconsistent. For me, it was difficult to maintain that high level of focus and patience for more than a few matches in a row. I finally had a massive breakthrough when I was 14; I kept my focus for an entire tournament and won the Winter Nationals, out of nowhere, as the 16 seed! This definitely gave me a huge boost of confidence.   Q: Your ranking skyrocketed in the 16's. What were the reasons for the results?  A: In the 16’s, I started putting together a really strong arsenal of coaches and match play. This meant getting my butt kicked on a weekly basis by older boys and doing countless drills that I couldn’t stand. I became a lot more independent and began to take responsibility for my game- which I believe really helped my game. I started managing my practice schedule and training the way I wanted to train. Being in charge of my practices made me excited to practice and get better. I’ll be honest though, sometimes putting in the work wasn’t super fun, but winning several big tournaments in one year was :)   Q: What life skills has tennis taught you?  A: Tennis has absolutely shaped me into the person I am today. It has forced me to start thinking for myself a lot younger than the average teenager. I have also become incredibly independent when it comes to running my tennis, life, house and taking care of my dog. I also learned time management and the ability to solve problems quickly. Many of the obstacles I learned to hurdled over on the tennis court, from a young age, translated over to real life. I think any tennis player of a high level can speak on this: we are a lot more prepared for college than the average teen.   Q: Knowing then what you know now, how could you have maximized your potential at a quicker rate?  A: I wasted a lot of time from age 10 to about 13 ½. I should’ve been working smarter, not harder. Instead of hitting a ton of forehands crosscourt, I should’ve been refining my short angles, lobs, footwork and patterns. Strokes aside, I was very late to strengthening the mental aspect of my game. I would let my emotions run my game and determine the outcome of my matches. I still get frustrated on the court, but you will never ever see it translate to the next point. I have a very fiery personality that will never change, but it has definitely been harnessed.   Q: Within the 4 major components, what would you of done differently or given more attention to? Stroke Development  Athleticism Mental Emotional  A: I would have worked on the mental and emotional components just as much as perfecting backswings and foot speed. I wish I could have spent more time off the court learning about how to manage my emotions and how to construct points. In my early tournament years, my frustrations on the court never stemmed from my bad grip or weird stroke, but from not knowing how to reset emotionally and actually play smart tennis. Q: What type of specialized coaches, trainers & PT's are part of your entourage? A: As of right now, I work with three different coaches. With Frank Giampaolo, I work on drilling my secondary shots and refining my mental and emotional tactics and routines. I also work with a hitting coach where we almost always do live ball or point play the entire training session. He adjusts his style of play based on what I need to work on. Then, my third coach watches, coaches and directs while I spar with another player. I also do a group fitness class twice a week and once every other week get a sports massage from the same fitness trainer. I go to the gym throughout the week as well. They weren’t kidding when they say it takes a village.   Q: Did you play High School tennis all four years? Why or why not?  I enrolled in an online high school starting my freshman year. This was to ensure I could travel and train without the restrictions of a classroom from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. I have never played high school tennis and have zero regrets about not doing so. High school coaches are strict about players attending all practices and matches and I feel as though hitting with girls who only pick up a racket during tennis season would’ve done nothing for my game.   Q: According to ScholarshipStats.com approximately 1% of female high school tennis players receive a FULL RIDE D-1 college tennis scholarship. What college offer did you decide to take?  A: I will be attending Arizona State University in the Fall of 2018 on a FULL RIDE.   Q: What parting advice can you share with the current crop of parents and athletes on this journey? A: It sounds harsh but you kind of need to be selfish in this sport. Don’t feel the need to stick with a coach because you’ll hurt their feelings if you leave. If they are not working out, then move on and find something else. Same thing goes for the players themselves, don’t feel the need to keep playing when it starts to feel like a chore. Getting a little burnt out? Consider putting your rackets down for a little while and taking a break from tennis. The break will help you to determine if you love tennis and want to play again. It is virtually impossible to have good results when you aren’t enjoying it. Speaking of enjoying it, enjoy the wild ride of junior tennis. As someone who goes off to college in about nine months, I can confidently say that my junior tennis career has flown by. Best luck of luck to all the juniors and parents reading this! If you would like to contact Frank Giampaolo, you can email him at fgsa@earthlink.net.  Thank you for tuning into our podcast! This is the last episode for 2017, so please use the next few weeks to enjoy your time with friends and family and to catch up on any missed episodes! In this episode, we clear up the myth about scrub of death, look at Wayland and Weston on FreeBSD, Intel QuickAssist is here, and we check out OpenSMTP on OpenBSD. This episode was brought to you by Headlines Matt Ahrens answers questions about the “Scrub of Death” In working on the breakdown of that ZFS article last week, Matt Ahrens contacted me and provided some answers he has given to questions in the past, allowing me to answer them using HIS exact words. “ZFS has an operation, called SCRUB, that is used to check all data in the pool and recover any data that is incorrect. However, if a bug which make errors on the pool persist (for example, a system with bad non-ecc RAM) then SCRUB can cause damage to a pool instead of recover it. I heard it called the “SCRUB of death” somewhere. Therefore, as far as I understand, using SCRUB without ECC memory is dangerous.” > I don't believe that is accurate. What is the proposed mechanism by which scrub can corrupt a lot of data, with non-ECC memory? > ZFS repairs bad data by writing known good data to the bad location on disk. The checksum of the data has to verify correctly for it to be considered "good". An undetected memory error could change the in-memory checksum or data, causing ZFS to incorrectly think that the data on disk doesn't match the checksum. In that case, ZFS would attempt to repair the data by first re-reading the same offset on disk, and then reading from any other available copies of the data (e.g. mirrors, ditto blocks, or RAIDZ reconstruction). If any of these attempts results in data that matches the checksum, then the data will be written on top of the (supposed) bad data. If the data was actually good, then overwriting it with the same good data doesn't hurt anything. > Let's look at what will happen with 3 types of errors with non-ECC memory: > 1. Rare, random errors (e.g. particle strikes - say, less than one error per GB per second). If ZFS finds data that matches the checksum, then we know that we have the correct data (at least at that point in time, with probability 1-1/2^256). If there are a lot of memory errors happening at a high rate, or if the in-memory checksum was corrupt, then ZFS won't be able to find a good copy of the data , so it won't do a repair write. It's possible that the correctly-checksummed data is later corrupted in memory, before the repair write. However, the window of vulnerability is very very small - on the order of milliseconds between when the checksum is verified, and when the write to disk completes. It is implausible that this tiny window of memory vulnerability would be hit repeatedly. > 2. Memory that pretty much never does the right thing. (e.g. huge rate of particle strikes, all memory always reads 0, etc). In this case, critical parts of kernel memory (e.g. instructions) will be immediately corrupted, causing the system to panic and not be able to boot again. > 3. One or a few memory locations have "stuck bits", which always read 0 (or always read 1). This is the scenario discussed in the message which (I believe) originally started the "Scrub of Death" myth: https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/ecc-vs-non-ecc-ram-and-zfs.15449/ This assumes that we read in some data from disk to a memory location with a stuck bit, "correct" that same bad memory location by overwriting the memory with the correct data, and then we write the bad memory location to disk. However, ZFS doesn't do that. (It seems the author thinks that ZFS uses parity, which it only does when using RAID-Z. Even with RAID-Z, we also verify the checksum, and we don't overwrite the bad memory location.) > Here's what ZFS will actually do in this scenario: If ZFS reads data from disk into a memory location with a stuck bit, it will detect a checksum mismatch and try to find a good copy of the data to repair the "bad" disk. ZFS will allocate a new, different memory location to read a 2nd copy of the data, e.g. from the other side of a mirror (this happens near the end of dslscanscrub_cb()). If the new memory location also has a stuck bit, then its checksum will also fail, so we won't use it to repair the "bad" disk. If the checksum of the 2nd copy of the data is correct, then we will write it to the "bad" disk. This write is unnecessary, because the "bad" disk is not really bad, but it is overwriting the good data with the same good data. > I believe that this misunderstanding stems from the idea that ZFS fixes bad data by overwriting it in place with good data. In reality, ZFS overwrites the location on disk, using a different memory location for each read from disk. The "Scrub of Death" myth assumes that ZFS overwrites the location in memory, which it doesn't do. > In summary, there's no plausible scenario where ZFS would amplify a small number of memory errors, causing a "scrub of death". Additionally, compared to other filesystems, ZFS checksums provide some additional protection against bad memory. “Is it true that ZFS verifies the checksum of every block on every read from disk?” > Yes “And if that block is incorrect, that ZFS will repair it?” > Yes “If yes, is it possible set options or flag for change that behavior? For example, I would like for ZFS to verify checksums during any read, but not change anything and only report about issues if it appears. Is it possible?” > There isn't any built-in flag for doing that. It wouldn't be hard to add one though. If you just wanted to verify data, without attempting to correct it, you could read or scan the data with the pool was imported read-only “If using a mirror, when a file is read, is it fully read and verified from both sides of the mirror?” > No, for performance purposes, each block is read from only one side of the mirror (assuming there is no checksum error). “What is the difference between a scrub and copying every file to /dev/null?” > That won't check all copies of the file (e.g. it won't check both sides of the mirror). *** Wayland, and Weston, and FreeBSD - Oh My! (https://euroquis.nl/bobulate/?p=1617) KDE's CI system for FreeBSD (that is, what upstream runs to continuously test KDE git code on the FreeBSD platform) is missing some bits and failing some tests because of Wayland. Or rather, because FreeBSD now has Wayland, but not Qt5-Wayland, and no Weston either (the reference implementation of a Wayland compositor). Today I went hunting for the bits and pieces needed to make that happen. Fortunately, all the heavy lifting has already been done: there is a Weston port prepared and there was a Qt5-Wayland port well-hidden in the Area51 plasma5/ branch. I have taken the liberty of pulling them into the Area51 repository as branch qtwayland. That way we can nudge Weston forward, and/or push Qt5-Wayland in separately. Nicest from a testing perspective is probably doing both at the same time. I picked a random “Hello World” Wayland tutorial and also built a minimal Qt program (using QMessageBox::question, my favorite function to hate right now, because of its i18n characteristics). Then, setting XDGRUNTIMEDIR to /tmp/xdg, I could start Weston (as an X11 client), wayland-hello (as a Wayland client, displaying in Weston) and qt-hello (as either an X11 client, or as a Wayland client). So this gives users of Area51 (while shuffling branches, granted) a modern desktop and modern display capabilities. Oh my! It will take a few days for this to trickle up and/or down so that the CI can benefit and we can make sure that KWin's tests all work on FreeBSD, but it's another good step towards tight CI and another small step towards KDE Plasma 5 on the desktop on FreeBSD. pkgsrcCon 2017 report (https://blog.netbsd.org/tnf/entry/pkgsrccon_2017_report) This years pkgsrcCon returned to London once again. It was last held in London back in 2014. The 2014 con was the first pkgsrcCon I attended, I had been working on Darwin/PowerPC fixes for some months and presented on the progress I'd made with a 12" G4 PowerBook. I took away a G4 Mac Mini that day to help spare the PowerBook for use and dedicate a machine for build and testing. The offer of PowerPC hardware donations was repeated at this years con, thanks to jperkin@ who showed up with a backpack full of Mac Minis (more on that later). Since 2014 we have held cons in Berlin (2015) & Krakow (2016). In Krakow we had talks about a wide range of projects over 2 days, from Haiku Ports to Common Lisp to midipix (building native PE binaries for Windows) and back to the BSDs. I was very pleased to continue the theme of a diverse program this year. Aside from pkgsrc and NetBSD, we had talks about FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Slackware Linux, and Plan 9. Things began with a pub gathering on the Friday for the pre-con social, we hung out and chatted till almost midnight on a wide range of topics, such as supporting a system using NFS on MS-DOS, the origins of pdksh, corporate IT, culture and many other topics. On parting I was asked about the starting time on Saturday as there was some conflicting information. I learnt that the registration email had stated a later start than I had scheduled for & advertised on the website, by 30 minutes. Lesson learnt: register for your own event! Not a problem, I still needed to setup a webpage for the live video stream, I could do both when I got back. With some trimming here and there I had a new schedule, I posted that to the pkgsrcCon website and moved to trying to setup a basic web page which contained a snippet of javascript to play a live video stream from Scale Engine. 2+ hours later, it was pointed out that the XSS protection headers on pkgsrc.org breaks the functionality. Thanks to jmcneill@ for debugging and providing a working page. Saturday started off with Giovanni Bechis speaking about pledge in OpenBSD and adding support to various packages in their ports tree, alnsn@ then spoke about installing packages from a repo hosted on the Tor network. After a quick coffee break we were back to hear Charles Forsyth speak about how Plan 9 and Inferno dealt with portability, building software and the problem which are avoided by the environment there. This was followed by a very energetic rant by David Spencer from the Slackbuilds project on packaging 3rd party software. Slackbuilds is a packaging system for Slackware Linux, which was inspired by FreeBSD ports. For the first slot after lunch, agc@ gave a talk on the early history of pkgsrc followed by Thomas Merkel on using vagrant to test pkgsrc changes with ease, locally, using vagrant. khorben@ covered his work on adding security to pkgsrc and bsiegert@ covered the benefits of performing our bulk builds in the cloud and the challenges we currently face. My talk was about some topics and ideas which had inspired me or caught my attention, and how it could maybe apply to my work. The title of the talk was taken from the name of Andrew Weatherall's Saint Etienne remix, possibly referring to two different styles of track (dub & vocal) merged into one or something else. I meant it in terms of applicability of thoughts and ideas. After me, agc@ gave a second talk on the evolution of the Netflix Open Connect appliance which runs FreeBSD and Vsevolod Stakhov wrapped up the day with a talk about the technical implementation details of the successor to pkgtools in FreeBSD, called pkg, and how it could be of benefit for pkgsrc. For day 2 we gathered for a hack day at the London Hack Space. I had burn't some some CD of the most recent macppc builds of NetBSD 8.0BETA and -current to install and upgrade Mac Minis. I setup the donated G4 minis for everyone in a dual-boot configuration and moved on to taking apart my MacBook Air to inspect the wifi adapter as I wanted to replace it with something which works on FreeBSD. It was not clear from the ifixit teardown photos of cards size, it seemed like a normal mini-PCIe card but it turned out to be far smaller. Thomas had also had the same card in his and we are not alone. Thomas has started putting together a driver for the Broadcom card, the project is still in its early days and lacks support for encrypted networks but hopefully it will appear on review.freebsd.org in the future. weidi@ worked on fixing SunOS bugs in various packages and later in the night we setup a NetBSD/macppc bulk build environment together on his Mac Mini. Thomas setup an OpenGrock instance to index the source code of all the software available for packaging in pkgsrc. This helps make the evaluation of changes easier and the scope of impact a little quicker without having to run through a potentially lengthy bulk build with a change in mind to realise the impact. bsiegert@ cleared his ticket and email backlog for pkgsrc and alnsn@ got NetBSD/evbmips64-eb booting on his EdgeRouter Lite. On Monday we reconvened at the Hack Space again and worked some more. I started putting together the talks page with the details from Saturday and the the slides which I had received, in preparation for the videos which would come later in the week. By 3pm pkgsrcCon was over. I was pretty exhausted but really pleased to have had a few days of techie fun. Many thanks to The NetBSD Foundation for purchasing a camera to use for streaming the event and a speedy response all round by the board. The Open Source Specialist Group at BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT and the London Hack Space for hosting us. Scale Engine for providing streaming facility. weidi@ for hosting the recorded videos. Allan Jude for pointers, Jared McNeill for debugging, NYCBUG and Patrick McEvoy for tips on streaming, the attendees and speakers. This year we had speakers from USA, Italy, Germany and London E2. Looking forward to pkgsrcCon 2018! The videos and slides are available here (http://www.pkgsrc.org/pkgsrcCon/2017/talks.html) and the Internet Archive (http://archive.org/details/pkgsrcCon-2017). News Roundup QuickAssist Driver for FreeBSD is here and pfSense Support Coming (https://www.servethehome.com/quickassist-driver-freebsd-pfsupport-coming/) This week we have something that STH readers will be excited about. Before I started writing for STH, I was a reader and had been longing for QuickAssist support ever since STH's first Rangeley article over three and a half years ago. It was clear from the get-go that Rangeley was going to be the preeminent firewall appliance platform of its day. The scope of products that were impacted by the Intel Atom C2000 series bug showed us it was indeed. For my personal firewalls, I use pfSense on that Rangeley platform so I have been waiting to use QuickAssist with my hardware for almost an entire product generation. + New Hardware and QuickAssist Incoming to pfSense (Finally) pfSense (and a few other firewalls) are based on FreeBSD. FreeBSD tends to lag driver support behind mainstream Linux but it is popular for embedded security appliances. While STH is the only site to have done QuickAssist benchmarks for OpenSSL and IPSec VPNs pre-Skylake, we expect more platforms to use it now that the new Intel Xeon Scalable Processor Family is out. With the Xeon Scalable platforms, the “Lewisburg” PCH has QuickAssist options of up to 100Gbps, or 2.5x faster than the previous generation add-in cards we tested (40Gbps.) We now have more and better hardware for QAT, but we were still devoid of a viable FreeBSD QAT driver from Intel. That has changed. Our Intel Xeon Scalable Processor Family (Skylake-SP) Launch Coverage Central has been the focus of the STH team's attention this week. There was another important update from Intel that got buried, a publicly available Intel QuickAssist driver for FreeBSD. You can find the driver on 01.org here dated July 12, 2017. Drivers are great, but we still need support to be enabled in the OS and at the application layer. Patrick forwarded me this tweet from Jim Thompson (lead at Netgate the company behind pfSense): The Netgate team has been a key company pushing QuickAssist appliances in the market, usually based on Linux. To see that QAT is coming to FreeBSD and that they were working to integrate into “pfSense soon” is more than welcome. For STH readers, get ready. It appears to be actually and finally happening. QuickAssist on FreeBSD and pfSense OpenBSD on the Huawei MateBook X (https://jcs.org/2017/07/14/matebook) The Huawei MateBook X is a high-quality 13" ultra-thin laptop with a fanless Core i5 processor. It is obviously biting the design of the Apple 12" MacBook, but it does have some notable improvements such as a slightly larger screen, a more usable keyboard with adequate key travel, and 2 USB-C ports. It also uses more standard PC components than the MacBook, such as a PS/2-connected keyboard, removable m.2 WiFi card, etc., so its OpenBSD compatibility is quite good. In contrast to the Xiaomi Mi Air, the MateBook is actually sold (2) in the US and comes with a full warranty and much higher build quality (though at twice the price). It is offered in the US in a "space gray" color for the Core i5 model and a gold color for the Core i7. The fanless Core i5 processor feels snappy and doesn't get warm during normal usage on OpenBSD. Doing a make -j4 build at full CPU speed does cause the laptop to get warm, though the palmrest maintains a usable temperature. The chassis is all aluminum and has excellent rigidity in the keyboard area. The 13.0" 2160x1440 glossy IPS "Gorilla glass" screen has a very small bezel and its hinge is properly weighted to allow opening the lid with one hand. There is no wobble in the screen when open, even when jostling the desk that the laptop sits on. It has a reported brightness of 350 nits. I did not experience any of the UEFI boot variable problems that I did with the Xiaomi, and the MateBook booted quickly into OpenBSD after re-initializing the GPT table during installation. OpenSMTPD under OpenBSD with SSL/VirtualUsers/Dovecot (https://blog.cagedmonster.net/opensmtpd-under-openbsd-with-ssl-virtualusers-dovecot/) During the 2013 AsiaBSDCon, the team of OpenBSD presented its mail solution named OpenSMTPD. Developed by the OpenBSD team, we find the so much appreciated philosophy of its developers : security, simplicity / clarity and advanced features. Basic configuration : OpenSMTPD is installed by default, we can immediately start with a simple configuration. > We listen on our interfaces, we specify the path of our aliases file so we can manage redirections. > Mails will be delivered for the domain cagedmonster.net to mbox (the local users mailbox), same for the aliases. > Finally, we accept to relay local mails exclusively. > We can now enable smtpd at system startup and start the daemon. Advanced configuration including TLS : You can use SSL with : A self-signed certificate (which will not be trusted) or a certificate generated by a trusted authority. LetsEncrypt uses Certbot to generated your certificate. You can check this page for further informations. Let's focus on the first. Generation of the certificate : We fix the permissions : We edit the config file : > We have a mail server with SSL, it's time to configure our IMAP server, Dovecot, and manage the creation of virtual users. Dovecot setup, and creation of Virtual Users : We will use the package system of OpenBSD, so please check the configuration of your /etc/pkg.conf file. Enable the service at system startup : Setup the Virtual Users structure : Adding the passwd table for smtpd : Modification of the OpenSMTPD configuration : We declare the files used for our Virtual Accounts, we include SSL, and we configure mails delivery via the Dovecot lmtp socket. We'll create our user lina@cagedmonster.net and set its password. Configure SSL Configure dovecot.conf Configure mail.con Configure login.conf : Make sure that the value of openfiles-cur in /etc/login.conf is equal or superior of 1000 ! Starting Dovecot *** OpenSMTPD and Dovecot under OpenBSD with MySQL support and SPAMD (https://blog.cagedmonster.net/opensmtpd-and-dovecot-under-openbsd-with-mysql-support-and-spamd/) This article is the continuation of my previous tutorial OpenSMTPD under OpenBSD with SSL/VirtualUsers/Dovecot. We'll use the same configuration and add some features so we can : Use our domains, aliases, virtual users with a MySQL database (MariaDB under OpenBSD). Deploy SPAMD with OpenSMTPD for a strong antispam solution. + Setup of the MySQL support for OpenSMTPD & Dovecot + We create our SQL database named « smtpd » + We create our SQL user « opensmtpd » we give him the privileges on our SQL database and we set its password + We create the structure of our SQL database + We generate our password with Blowfish (remember it's OpenBSD !) for our users + We create our tables and we include our datas + We push everything to our database + Time to configure OpenSMTPD + We create our mysql.conf file and configure it + Configuration of Dovecot.conf + Configuration of auth-sql.conf.ext + Configuration of dovecot-sql.conf.ext + Restart our services OpenSMTPD & SPAMD : SPAMD is a service simulating a fake SMTP server and relying on strict compliance with RFC to determine whether the server delivering a mail is a spammer or not. + Configuration of SPAMD : + Enable SPAMD & SPAMLOGD at system startup : + Configuration of SPAMD flags + Configuration of PacketFilter + Configuration of SPAMD + Start SPAMD & SPAMLOGD Running a TOR relay on FreeBSD (https://networkingbsdblog.wordpress.com/2017/07/14/freebsd-tor-relay-using-priveledge-seperation/) There are 2 main steps to getting a TOR relay working on FreeBSD: Installing and configuring Tor Using an edge router to do port translation In my case I wanted TOR to run it's services on ports 80 and 443 but any port under 1024 requires root access in UNIX systems. +So I used port mapping on my router to map the ports. +Begin by installing TOR and ARM from: /usr/ports/security/tor/ /usr/ports/security/arm/ Arm is the Anonymizing Relay Monitor: https://www.torproject.org/projects/arm.html.en It provides useful monitoring graph and can be used to configure the torrc file. Next step edit the torrc file (see Blog article for the edit) It is handy to add the following lines to /etc/services so you can more easily modify your pf configuration. torproxy 9050/tcp #torsocks torOR 9090/tcp #torOR torDIR 9099/tcp #torDIR To allow TOR services my pf.conf has the following lines: # interfaces lan_if=”re0″ wifi_if=”wlan0″ interfaces=”{wlan0,re0}” tcp_services = “{ ssh torproxy torOR torDIR }” # options set block-policy drop set loginterface $lan_if # pass on lo set skip on lo scrub in on $lan_if all fragment reassemble # NAT nat on $lan_if from $wifi_if:network to !($lan_if) -> ($lan_if) block all antispoof for $interfaces #In NAT pass in log on $wifi_if inet pass out all keep state #ICMP pass out log inet proto icmp from any to any keep state pass in log quick inet proto icmp from any to any keep state #SSH pass in inet proto tcp to $lan_if port ssh pass in inet proto tcp to $wifi_if port ssh #TCP Services on Server pass in inet proto tcp to $interfaces port $tcp_services keep state The finally part is mapping the ports as follows: TOR directory port: LANIP:9099 —> WANIP:80 TOR router port: LANIP:9090 —-> WANIP:443 Now enable TOR: $ sudo echo “tor_enable=YES” >> /etc/rc.conf Start TOR: $ sudo service tor start *** Beastie Bits OpenBSD as a “Desktop” (Laptop) (http://unixseclab.com/index.php/2017/06/12/openbsd-as-a-desktop-laptop/) Sascha Wildner has updated ACPICA in DragonFly to Intel's version 20170629 (http://lists.dragonflybsd.org/pipermail/commits/2017-July/625997.html) Dport, Rust, and updates for DragonFlyBSD (https://www.dragonflydigest.com/2017/07/18/19991.html) OPNsense 17.7 RC1 released (https://opnsense.org/opnsense-17-7-rc1/) Unix's mysterious && and || (http://www.networkworld.com/article/3205148/linux/unix-s-mysterious-andand-and.html#tk.rss_unixasasecondlanguage) The Commute Deck : A Homebrew Unix terminal for tight places (http://boingboing.net/2017/06/16/cyberspace-is-everting.html) FreeBSD 11.1-RC3 now available (https://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-stable/2017-July/087407.html) Installing DragonFlyBSD with ORCA when you're totally blind (http://lists.dragonflybsd.org/pipermail/users/2017-July/313528.html) Who says FreeBSD can't look good (http://imgur.com/gallery/dc1pu) Pratik Vyas adds the ability to do paused VM migrations for VMM (http://undeadly.org/cgi?action=article&sid=20170716160129) Feedback/Questions Hrvoje - OpenBSD MP Networking (http://dpaste.com/0EXV173#wrap) Goran - debuggers (http://dpaste.com/1N853NG#wrap) Abhinav - man-k (http://dpaste.com/1JXQY5E#wrap) Liam - university setup (http://dpaste.com/01ERMEQ#wrap)

This episode gives you the full dose of BSDCan 2017 recap as well as a blog post on conference speaking advice. Headlines Pre-conference activities: Goat BoF, FreeBSD Foundation Board Meeting, and FreeBSD Journal Editorial Board Meeting The FreeBSD Foundation has a new President as Justin Gibbs is busy this year with building a house, so George Neville-Neil took up the task to serve as President, with Justin Gibbs as Secretary. Take a look at the updated Board of Directors (https://www.freebsdfoundation.org/about/board-of-directors/). We also have a new staff member (https://www.freebsdfoundation.org/about/staff/): Scott Lamons joined the Foundation team as senior program manager. Scott's work for the Foundation will focus on managing and evangelizing programs for advanced technologies in FreeBSD including preparing project plans, coordinating resources, and facilitating interactions between commercial vendors, the Foundation, and the FreeBSD community. The Foundation also planned various future activities, visits of upcoming conferences, and finding new ways to support and engage the community. The Foundation now has interns in the form of co-op students from the University of Waterloo, Canada. This is described further in the May 2017 Development Projects Update (https://www.freebsdfoundation.org/blog/may-2017-development-projects-update/). Both students (Siva and Charlie) were also the conference, helping out at the Foundation table, demonstrating the tinderbox dashboard. Follow the detailed instructions (https://www.freebsdfoundation.org/news-and-events/blog/blog-post/building-a-physical-freebsd-build-status-dashboard/) to build one of your own. The Foundation put out a call for Project Proposal Solicitation for 2017 (https://www.freebsdfoundation.org/blog/freebsd-foundation-2017-project-proposal-solicitation/). If you think you have a good proposal for work relating to any of the major subsystems or infrastructure for FreeBSD, we'd be happy to review it. Don't miss the deadlines for travel grants to some of the upcoming conferences. You can find the necessary forms and deadlines at the Travel Grant page (https://www.freebsdfoundation.org/what-we-do/travel-grants/travel-grants/) on the Foundation website. Pictures from the Goat BoF can be found on Keltia.net (https://assets.keltia.net/photos/BSDCan-2017/Royal%20Oak/index.html) Overlapping with the GoatBoF, members of the FreeBSD Journal editorial board met in a conference room in the Novotel to plan the upcoming issues. Topics were found, authors identified, and new content was discussed to appeal to even more readers. Check out the FreeBSD Journal website (https://www.freebsdfoundation.org/journal/) and subscribe if you like to support the Foundation in that way. FreeBSD Devsummit Day 1 & 2 (https://wiki.freebsd.org/DevSummit/201706) The first day of the Devsummit began with introductory slides by Gordon Tetlow, who organized the devsummit very well. Benno Rice of the FreeBSD core team presented the work done on the new Code of Conduct, which will become effective soon. A round of Q&A followed, with positive feedback from the other devsummit attendees supporting the new CoC. After that, Allan Jude joined to talk about the new FreeBSD Community Proposal (FCP) (https://github.com/freebsd/fcp) process. Modelled after IETF RFCs, Joyent RFDs, and Python PEP, it is a new way for the project to reach consensus on the design or implementation of new features or processes. The FCP repo contains FCP#0 that describes the process, and a template for writing a proposal. Then, the entire core team (except John Baldwin, who could not make it this year) and core secretary held a core Q&A session, Answering questions, gathering feedback and suggestions. After the coffee break, we had a presentation about Intel's QAT integration in FreeBSD. When the lunch was over, people spread out into working groups about BearSSL, Transport (TCP/IP), and OpenZFS. OpenZFS working group (https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DBu_IMsWAAId2sN.jpg:large): Matt Ahrens lead the group, and spent most of the first session providing a status update about what features have been recently committed, are out for review, on the horizon, or in the design phase. Existing Features Compressed ARC Compressed Send/Recv Recently Upstreamed A recent commit improved RAID-Z write speeds by declaring writes to padding blocks to be optional, and to always write them if they can be aggregated with the next write. Mostly impacts large record sizes. ABD (ARC buffer scatter/gather) Upstreaming In Progress Native Encryption Channel Programs Device Removal (Mirrors and Stripes) Redacted Send/recv Native TRIM Support (FreeBSD has its own, but this is better and applies to all ZFS implementations) Faster (mostly sequential) scrub/resilver DRAID (A great deal of time was spent explaining how this works, with diagrams on the chalk board) vdev metadata classes (store metadata on SSDs with data is on HDDs, or similar setups. Could also be modified to do dedup to SSD) Multi-mount protection (“safe import”, for dual-headed storage shelves) zpool checkpoint (rollback an entire pool, including zfs rename and zfs destroy) Further Out Import improvements Import with missing top-level vdevs (some blocks unreadable, but might let you get some data) Improved allocator performance -- vdev spacemap log ZIL performance Persistent L2ARC ZSTD Compression Day 2 Day two started with the Have/Want/Need session for FreeBSD 12.0. A number of features that various people have or are in the process of building, were discussed with an eye towards upstreaming them. Features we want to have in time for 12.0 (early 2019) were also discussed. After the break was the Vendor summit, which continued the discussion of how FreeBSD and its vendors can work together to make a better operating system, and better products based on it After lunch, the group broke up into various working groups: Testing/CI, Containers, Hardening UFS, and GELI Improvements Allan lead the GELI Improvements session. The main thrust of the discussions was fixing an outstanding bug in GELI when using both key slots with passphrases. To solve this, and make GELI more extensible, the metadata format will be extended to allow it to store more than 512 bytes of data (currently 511 bytes are used). The new format will allow arbitrarily large metadata, defined at creation time by selecting the number of user key slots desired. The new extended metadata format will contain mostly the same fields, except the userkey will no longer be a byte array of IV-key, Data-key, HMAC, but a struct that will contain all data about that key This new format will store the number of pkcs5v2 iterations per key, instead of only having a single location to store this number for all keys (the source of the original bug) A new set of flags per key, to control some aspects of the key (does it require a keyfile, etc), as well as possibly the role of the key. An auxdata field related to the flags, this would allow a specific key with a specific flag set, to boot a different partition, rather than decrypt the main partition. A URI to external key material is also stored per key, allowing GELI to uniquely identify the correct data to load to be able to use a specific decryption key And the three original parts of the key are stored in separate fields now. The HMAC also has a type field, allowing for a different HMAC algorithm to be used in the future. The main metadata is also extended to include a field to store the number of user keys, and to provide an overall HMAC of the metadata, so that it can be verified using the master key (provide any of the user keys) Other topics discussed: Ken Merry presented sedutil, a tool for managing Self Encrypting Drives, as may be required by certain governments and other specific use cases. Creating a deniable version of GELI, where the metadata is also encrypted The work to implemented GELI in the UEFI loader was discussed, and a number of developers volunteered to review and test the code Following the end of the Dev Summit, the “Newcomers orientation and mentorship” session was run by Michael W. Lucas, which attempts to pair up first time attendees with oldtimers, to make sure they always know a few people they can ask if they have questions, or if they need help getting introduced to the right people. News Roundup Conference Day 1 (http://www.bsdcan.org/2017/schedule/day_2017-06-09.en.html) The conference opened with some short remarks from Dan Langille, and then the opening keynote by Dr Michael Geist, a law professor at the University of Ottawa where he holds the Canada Research Chair in Internet and E-commerce Law. The keynote focused on what some of the currently issues are, and how the technical community needs to get involved at all levels. In Canada especially, contacting your representatives is quite effective, and when it does not happen, they only hear the other side of the story, and often end up spouting talking points from lobbyists as if they were facts. The question period for the keynote ran well overtime because of the number of good questions the discussion raised, including how do we fight back against large telcos with teams of lawyers and piles of money. Then the four tracks of talks started up for the day The day wrapped up with the Work In Progress (WIP) session. Allan Jude presented work on ZSTD compression in ZFS Drew Gallatin presented about work at Netflix on larger mbufs, to avoid the need for chaining and to allow more data to be pushed at once. Results in an 8% CPU time reduction when pushing 90 gbps of TLS encrypted traffic Dan Langille presented about letsencrypt (the acme.sh tool specifically), and bacula Samy Al Bahra presented about Concurrency Kit *** Conference Day 2 (http://www.bsdcan.org/2017/schedule/day_2017-06-10.en.html) Because Dan is a merciful soul, BSDCan starts an hour later on the second day Another great round of talks and BoF sessions over lunch The hallway track was great as always, and I spent most of the afternoon just talking with people Then the final set of talks started, and I was torn between all four of them Then there was the auction, and the closing party *** BSDCan 2017 Auction Swag (https://blather.michaelwlucas.com/archives/2962) Groff Fundraiser Pins: During the conference, You could get a unique Groff pin, by donating more than the last person to either the FreeBSD or OpenBSD foundation Michael W. If either of the boys have done it (ages 13 and 11), the forks are haphazardly in a jumble and the spoon stack has overflowed into the knife section, and the measuring spoons are nowhere to be found. If, on the other hand, it was my daughter (age 8), everything is perfectly in order. Not only are all the forks where they belong, but the small forks and the large forks have been separated into their own piles and the measuring spoons are nestled neatly in size order. Regardless of the state of your own silverware drawer, it is clear that most of us need some sort of direction when it comes to organizing our DNA test results. Organizing your matches entails more than just lining them up into nice categories like Mom's side vs. Dad's side, or known connections vs. unknown connections. Organizing your results involves making a plan for their use. Good organization for your test results can help you reveal or refine your genealogical goals, and help determine your next steps. The very first step is to download your raw data from your testing company and store it somewhere on your own computer. I have instructions on my website if you need help. Once that is complete, we can get to the match list. One common situation for those of you who have several generations of ancestors in the United States, you may have some ancestors that seem to have produced a lot of descendants who have caught the DNA testing vision. This can be like your overflowing spoon stack, and it may be obscuring some valuable matches. But identifying and putting all of those known matches in their proper context can help you realize these abundant matches may lead to clues about the descendant lines of your known ancestral couple that you were not aware of. In my quick sheet I outline a process for drawing out the genetic and genealogical relationships of these known connections to better understand their relationship to each other and to you. It is then easier to verify that your genetic connection is aligned with your known genealogical paper trail and spot areas that might need more research. This same idea of plotting the relationships of your matches to each other can also be employed as you are looking to break down a brick wall in your family tree, or even in cases of adoption.  They key to identifying unknowns is determining the relationships of your matches to each other, so you can better see where you might fit in. Another helpful tool is a trick I learned from our very own Lisa Louise Cooke, and that is . Have you ever tried to use Google Earth to help you in your genetic genealogy? Remember that the common ancestor between you and your match has three things that connect you to them: their genetics, surnames, and locations. We know the genetics is working because they are showing up on your match list. But often times you cannot see a shared surname among your matches. However, by plotting their locations in the free Google Earth, kind of like separating the big forks from the little forks, you might be able to recognize a shared location that would identify which line you should investigate for a shared connection. So, what are you waiting for? Line up those spoons and separate the big forks from the little forks, your organizing efforts may just reveal a family of measuring Spoons, all lined up and waiting to be added to your family history.   GENEALOGY GEMS BOOK CLUB: Sarah A. 0n this episode, Jonathan talks with DanceSafe founder and director of the upcoming documentary MDMA: The Movie, Emanuel Sferios. Emanuel founded DanceSafe in 1998 with a goal of providing fact-based drug education and harm reduction at raves and parties. After a number of years working as an environmental activist, he has returned to the world of drug policy reform and education with this documentary project. Jonathan and Emanuel discuss drug policy, drug education reform, how to talk to your teen about their interest and use, and why testing is so much more critical in today's drug climate than it was back in their day. Emanuel also weighs in on our BIG questions right now: "How to talk to your children with integrity about substances," and "How to come out to your parents about psychedelics." Emanuel also spends a great deal of time discussing the many popular substances out there right now, how they may differ from the party climate we grew up in, and how to help our kids make the informed choices about their use or non-use of plants and chemicals. Jonathan also talks about the ongoing Psychedelic Parenting GoFundMe fundraiser, and announces 2 BIG pieces of news: Robert Barnhart, producer of A New Understanding: The Science of Psilocybin, (who will be joining us on an upcoming episode) has pledged a $2000 matching gift to the fundraiser, which means anyone giving now will have their donation DOUBLED by Robert's generous gift. Also, Psychedelic Parenting is now being fiscally sponsored by The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), which means our supporters can now make tax deductible donations to our efforts though MAPS! We would like to thanks everyone who has already given, David, Dasha, and Bodhi Gaian and the team at Pharmazonia. Dennis McKenna, and our anonymous donors TJ, Matt, SC, JYN, and VR. Today’s podcast episode is a bit different than usual because I’ve solicited questions from the Optimising nutrition, managing insulin Facebook group for kidney expert Dr. Jason Fung. If this is the first time you’ve heard of Jason, you might be better off starting with his Sigma Nutrition Radio interview and also The Aetiology Of Obesity YouTube playlist. The questions are great - they cover the topics of blood glucose levels, type 1 and type 2 diabetes issues, fasting, muscle loss, what Jason recommends as an effective treatment for diabetes and much more. Before we get into the Q&A, let’s start out by clarifying some things about diabetes that Jason was very insistent that we understand... The difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Many people think that type 1 and type 2 diabetes are closely related but Jason insists that’s wrong. They are “completely different diseases” and “you can’t even talk about them in the same sentence.” Type 1 diabetes is a problem of not enough insulin. The proper course of treatment is to give insulin to the patient. That makes sense. But type 2 diabetes is a disease of too much insulin. Yet, what do we typically do for a type 2 diabetic? We give them insulin. Why? To control what we consider to be high blood sugar levels. But giving insulin to a type 2 diabetic doesn’t address the underlying cause that is the insulin resistance. Giving insulin as medicine drops blood sugar levels but the disease remains. Jason likens this method of treatment to giving an alcoholic a drink of whiskey because he’s experiencing withdrawal symptoms. Sure, the symptom will go away temporarily but the disease is still there… and it’s actually getting worse. On this episode you’re going to hear Dr. Jason Fung answer these specific questions: Q: Which is worse, insulin toxicity or glucose toxicity? Q: At what percentage of A1C could we expect the person to have diabetes? Q: Various questions about blood sugar levels and what is the right number to shoot for. Q: When is a low carb diet not enough to help with diabetes? Q: What are the benefits of fasting for type 2 diabetes? And what are the benefits of intermittent fasting? Q: Do you use fasting protocols or work with patients on a case by case basis? Q: Does fasting cause too much stress on the adrenals? Q: Is fasting different for men and women? I’ve heard it isn’t good for women to fast. Q: What happens when someone lean begins to fast? Do they begin to burn muscle? Q: Gluconeogenesis in lean individuals: Where is the substrate for glucose coming from? Q: Is there any fear of protein intake causing gluconeogenesis? Here’s the outline of this interview with Jason Fung: [0:19] Christopher’s introduction of Dr. Fung and this Q&A episode. [1:09] Jason’s background of kidney specialization and interest in type 2 diabetes. [8:03] Q&A with Dr. Fung. [45:03] Addendum with Dr. Tommy Wood. [52:29] In a week of fasting, you will likely lose a pound of lean muscle. Quality appraisal in systematic reviews of public health interventions: an empirical study on the impact of choice of tool on meta-analysis

Introduction Systematic reviews are a cornerstone of evidence-based public health. The method of appraising the quality of different intervention and observational study designs in such reviews remains an important challenge. This article examines the applicability of selected quality appraisal tools (QATs) and the impact of choice of tool on the meta-analysis of a published systematic review. Methods The authors selected a systematic review on the effectiveness of hand washing with soap in preventing diarrhoea, covering a range of epidemiological study designs. 6 QATs were used to assess 13 studies meeting their inclusion criteria; component sections/questions were coded numerically to derive a summary score between -1 (low quality) and +1 (high quality) for each QAT and study. Heterogeneity in study quality was evaluated graphically using traffic light schemes and spider charts. Random effects meta-analysis was undertaken for all studies; sensitivity analyses for each QAT included only those studies with a score of 0 or above. Results The authors found substantial heterogeneity in summary scores for a given study. Their main meta-analysis yielded an OR of 0.60 (95% CI 0.47 to 0.77) with most sensitivity analyses giving similar pooled effect sizes with wider CIs. Discussion The six QATs differ greatly in applicability across study designs, approach to quality appraisal (ie, scale vs checklist, presence/absence of summary score), coverage of domains and quality of component questions and answers. Learning from advantages and disadvantages of each QAT, we recommend research into the development of a reliable QAT with a broad applicability across study designs.
