Here at Dokkyo Med. we're trying to motivate our students to be more active and productive by challenging them to make a podcast during lesson time. In this series called Specific Information, students formed groups and were asked to answer 4 questions within their group. In this podcast Hiroaki, Masaki, Yuto and Masahiro take turns asking and answering the questions. We hope you enjoy their conversation.

We head back to Japan for, unfortunately, the last time, as we close out the WCW / New Japan Supershow series with Supershow III - a heavily (and awkwardly) edited version of Fantastic Story in Tokyo Dome, which unfortunately is not about elves and wizards fighting dragons in Tokyo Dome, but is, at least, a darn good wrestling show. Jushin "Thunder" Liger faces Ultimo Dragon in a dream match (okay, so there is one Dragon)! The Great Muta and Masahiro get another chance after their Starrcade 1992 effort underwhelmed us! Sting faces Hiroshi Hase in a contest for most naturally likeable wrestler! Plus, just what the heck is going on with commentary in that six-man tag match, and what big match got left on the cutting room floor this year? For all this and more (but no ceremony or presentation, goodness no), let's go to the ring!Music by Michael Gary Brewer at https://www.instantmusicnow.com/Follow us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/LetsGo2theRing/

Written in the fourth year of Kenji (1278), this letter is also referred to as Before and after Sado because it makes a clear distinction between the teachings the Daishonin expounded before his exile to Sado Island and those during and after his Sado exile. He compares the former to the pre-Lotus Sutra teachings, which Shakyamuni preached as an expedient to lead his disciples to the Lotus Sutra. Concerning his true teaching, the Daishonin says, “I secretly conveyed my teaching to my disciples from the province of Sado.” Quoting the Buddha's words, he refers to that teaching simply as “this great Law.” More precisely, this teaching was explained in two of his most important writings, The Opening of the Eyes and The Object of Devotion for Observing the Mind. The recipient of this letter is generally believed to be Misawa Kojirō, a lay follower of the Daishonin who was the lord of Misawa in Fuji District of Suruga Province, though some consider it given to Kojirō's grandson, Masahiro. Misawa appears to have kept his distance from the Daishonin for fear of antagonizing and arousing the suspicions of the Kamakura shogunate. But the Daishonin expresses understanding of his position as the lord of a manor responsible for a fief, family, and retainers, and kindly encourages him. https://www.nichirenlibrary.org/en/wnd-1/Content/112
When a notorious gangster escapes from custody while being transported to Japan, rebellious but inept cop Nick Conklin (Michael Douglas) sets out to recapture him at any cost, in Ridley Scott's action thriller BLACK RAIN (1989). Slightly more thoughtful than it might first appear, with America's position as a global power analysed through the lens of an unengaging and drawn-out organised crime saga that never quite gets going. A likeable performance from Andy Garcia as unfortunately beheaded partner Charlie almost steals the movie, as does his karaoke scene with Ken Takakura's excellent Masahiro, but it's Douglas's mullet which truly reigns supreme and seems to grow in presence throughout the film. Oh yeah, and there's some stuff in here which tries to address the USA's role in dropping nuclear weapons on Japan during the second world war, which doesn't seem too insensitive or crass 30 years later so that's good isn't it.We love to hear from our listeners! Masahiro Shinoda is one of the finest directors of Japan's Nouvelle Vague period, but his work is often overlooked when discussing the great filmmakers of the 1960s and '70s. Eric is a big fan of Shinoda, so he persuaded Jason to begin a look into the great man's films, starting with Pale Flower and With Beauty and Sorrow. And what a beginning it is! These two films are powerhouses, smart genre work which has a real energy and strength that makes them stand out. They are indeed overlooked masterpieces. Join the guys for 90 minutes' discussion about these overlooked gems - both of which are available on Criterion Channel. We start by asking what is philosophy, and how it can relate to the life of ordinary people. We talk about the philosophy of life and what Dr. Morioka calls “life studies”. We go through concepts and ideas explored in the book, like “now”, “past-present-future”, the fear of death, life as suffering, what it is to “exist”, solipsism, and birth. We discuss antinatalism. We talk about issues in modern industrialized societies, and current trends in Japanese culture and society. Finally, we talk about manga as a cultural phenomenon in Japan and as a medium to explore philosophical ideas. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: KARIN LIETZCKE, ANN BLANCHETTE, PER HELGE LARSEN, LAU GUERREIRO, JERRY MULLER, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BERNARDO SEIXAS, HERBERT GINTIS, RUTGER VOS, RICARDO VLADIMIRO, CRAIG HEALY, OLAF ALEX, PHILIP KURIAN, JONATHAN VISSER, JAKOB KLINKBY, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, JOHN CONNORS, PAULINA BARREN, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ARTHUR KOH, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, SUSAN PINKER, PABLO SANTURBANO, SIMON COLUMBUS, PHIL KAVANAGH, JORGE ESPINHA, CORY CLARK, MARK BLYTH, ROBERTO INGUANZO, MIKKEL STORMYR, ERIC NEURMANN, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, BERNARD HUGUENEY, ALEXANDER DANNBAUER, FERGAL CUSSEN, YEVHEN BODRENKO, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, DON ROSS, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, OZLEM BULUT, NATHAN NGUYEN, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, J.W., JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, IDAN SOLON, ROMAIN ROCH, DMITRY GRIGORYEV, TOM ROTH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, ADANER USMANI, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, AL ORTIZ, NELLEKE BAK, KATHRINE AND PATRICK TOBIN, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, NICK GOLDEN, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS P. During our discussion of Theodore Roscoe's 'Murder on the Way!', you might have heard us mention Death Among the Undead, which was recently translated by Ho-Ling Wong published by Locked Room International, adding to their collection of both niche and incredibly significant translated works from Japan. We sat down with John Pugmire from Locked Room International to talk a bit about what goes into selecting a book for their imprint, the exciting premise of Death Among the Undead, as well as his own translation work.
DO IT RIGHT It was my privilege and great pleasure to record this episode as a tribute to Masa's late father, who raised his son to “experience the world.” Honoring his wishes and eagerness to begin his journey Masahiro Miki traveled to the US alone in his junior year at Sophia University. Masa worked as a ranch hand in Kansas and took one year to hitchhike all over North America into South America, Canada, and Hawaii. Masa finished his master's degree at the University of Arizona and landed a job with Monsanto for three years, and then was hired by Texas Instruments, where he worked for twenty years. Those years of hard work, business travel, building a network became the foundation to Masa's vigor and positive outlook in life. His core spirit radiates whenever I see him, and it's a gift that keeps on giving!

After WWII, Japan's economy boomed: it rivaled the US in economic recovery in just 80 years up until the end of the Cold War era. Japan rose from the devastating destruction to recovery in the wake of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to becoming one of the top-performing economies in the world. Looking at Japan's economic growth, it is hard to imagine that it once suffered from being on the losing side of WW2 with most citizens of its nation barely had their basic needs met. Japan's westernization, military growth, defeat, and economic growth were products of interaction with the United States since Matthew Perry showed up at its pier on the very day of July 8th, 1853 forcing isolated Japan to open up to trade with the United States. As the name itself implies, The Rape of Nanking is no light subject. It is one of many of Japan's extended list of war crimes committed by commanders and their troops during World War II. Throughout the seven-week pillaging of what was once Nanking, an estimate of 20,000 to 80,000 Chinese women raped and forced into a life of prostitution as “comfort women”, and 50,000 to 300,000 Chinese civilians were brutalized and savagely murdered. Despite the fact that the massacre was carried out by the Japanese, the Chinese government could partially be blamed as well, due to the Nationalist leader, Chiang Kai-Shek's inadequate handling of the event, and Communist leader Mao Zedong's following coverup. The Rape of Nanking has been a topic of debate for historians in the past few decades as no one can seem to pinpoint the exact amount of people decimated, the extent of the acts committed by the Japanese Imperial Army, and whether it was comparable to the Holocaust. Masahiro Urushido is a career bartender and owner of Katana Kitten, a Japanese-American style bar in New York. The bar recently took out Best New American Cocktail Bar at the 2019 Spirited Awards. Masahiro is pioneering the practice of bringing elements of the Japanese style of bartending - which you can learn more about in our chat with Hidetsugu Ueno or Rogerio Igarashi (at the 48:00 mark of #3) - to the industry in the United States. As such, he's become renowned for his stunning highball cocktails that are made even more impressive by his attention to detail, something that seems to come naturally to any Japanese bartender. We ask Masahiro about his background, why Katana Kitten stands out, what is needed to make a beautiful highball and then finish with the Free Pour Five!
This podcast with Masahiro Kawai continues our country tour focused on the Osaka G20 Summit. Japan was, of course a key actor for this Summit with its hosting of this year’s annual G20 Summit. With growing competition between powers - China, Russia and the United States – the hosting has placed even greater pressure on those countries that host the annual G20. Japan also had a stressful year as a result of other events – the abdication of the Emperor and elections for the Upper Chamber. These events led Japan to initiate a truncated period before the Leaders’ Summit which took place on June 28-29th. The Summit witnessed a ‘reality TV series’ of meetings for President Trump – with China’s Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin of Russia, the Saudi Crown Prince and topped off with a meeting with Kim Jong-un of North Korea at the Korean DMZ. Difficult negotiations taxed Prime Minister’s Abe and his officials in finalizing the Leaders’ Declaration. Masahiro Kawai was an ideal guest as he was ‘well plugged in’ to the official Japanese G20 and T20 processes. Masahiro Kawai today is a Professor of the Graduate School of Public Policy, University of Tokyo and Representative Director and Director General, Economic Research Institute for Northeast Asia (ERINA). He has held many official roles including Dean and CEO of the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) Come listen to his valuable insights on Japan’s hosting of the G20 Osaka Summit.

The classic highball is such a simple drink, traditionally only made with only two ingredients, yet so often the drink falls flat. This is because what seems so simple in approach, can often be deceptively difficult to master. To help us better understand the highball, we decided to sit down with Masahiro Urishido (of Katana Kitten,) who has spent a great deal of his career considering the many nuances of this incredible drink. So tune in this week, as he shares his insight into the highball. Craft Beer in Japan is on the rise, and today we talk to an expat who is helping that rise: Gareth Burns of Be Easy Brewing. Our old buddy Ry Beville, of the Japan Beer Times, brought Gareth and his brewer Masahiro - along with their "everything" gal Chika, all the way out from Northern Japan just for this show! Gareth was stationed in Japan and fell in love with not only his surroundings, but the craft beer scene there, and decided to make that his new career path. He brought along two beers for us to try - a Czech Pils and a Pale Ale - making JP and Tasty the first two folks in the US to try beer from Be Easy. Pretty cool! We also talked (and tasted) some regional Sake! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Some games are just flat-out terrible and destined to never to see overflowing love from the gaming world (but that’s okay). This describes Hole Chaser for the PC-8801 perfectly.
