The wind will lessen Friday night, but only a little bit.A Linn County jury on Thursday convicted Dimione Walker of first-degree murder in the April 10 fatal shooting of Michael Valentine inside the Taboo Nightclub & Lounge in downtown Cedar Rapids.Walker, who claimed self-defense, briefly looked down as the verdict was read but then started smiling and almost laughing. After the jury left the courtroom, he continued to laugh. He winked at someone in the gallery as he was being taken from the courtroom in handcuffs.Walker faces a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole. His sentencing is set for Dec. 16.Jurors found Walker, 29, of Coralville, guilty of first-degree murder, going armed with intent and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The verdict was returned in less than 90 minutes, which is the shortest deliberation in recent years for a Linn County murder.Crews pulled a retired couple from the basement onto the lawn after responding to a house fire in northeast Cedar Rapids. The couple was declared dead at the scene, according to authorities and family members.Charles Osterkamp, 72, and Sheri Osterkamp, 70, were the only occupants of the home.Their son, Mark Osterkamp, said his parents had been retired for a few years. Charles Osterkamp worked at the former Midland Forge plant as a laborer. Sheri Osterkamp had been a stay-at-home mom.Firefighters were called at 12:08 p.m. to the 3800 block of Pine Tree Dr. NE after a 911 caller reported seeing smoke. When firefighters arrived, witnesses told them there were people inside the one-story structure, according to a city news release.Crews found two people in the lower level and brought them outside, where they were declared dead.A Marion man convicted in the 2018 murder of Chris Bagley pleaded guilty Thursday to charges he assaulted a drug informant in jail to prevent him from testifying against a drug dealer.Johnny Blahnik Church, 35, formerly known as Drew Blahnik, pleaded guilty to tampering with a witness and willful injury causing serious injury. The plea was an Alford plea, meaning that Blahnik Church still holds he is innocent of the charges, but admits that the prosecution has enough evidence to convict him in a trial.According to a criminal complaint, Blahnik Church, along with Gregory Sills, 49, of Oelwein, followed Ethan Palmer, the drug informant, into the bathroom in their cell pod at the Linn County Jail on May 27, and began “striking” Palmer. They eventually dragged Palmer out into the main area of the cellblock and continued to attack him.Palmer's injuries included a broken nose, two broken orbital bones, a torn retina, chipped teeth and a broken knee, the complaint states.Palmer was set to testify at the federal trial of Justin Michael Buehler, who was charged and later convicted of two counts of distributing methamphetamine. Palmer still testified in the trial, which started 12 days after the assault. Palmer had been in...
This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Tuesday, November 15.First came the cold temperatures, now comes the snow. According to the National Weather Service, snow will likely start after 4 a.m. Tuesday morning in the Cedar Rapids area and continue throughout the day. 1 to 2 inches of snow accumulation is possible. The high will be near 36 degrees, with a low around 27 degrees.Monday was the first day of testimony and opening statements in the first-degree murder trial of Dimione Walker, 29, of Coralville, following about three days of jury selection last week. Walker is claiming self-defense in the fatal shooting of Michael Valentine, 25, of Cedar Rapids in the Taboo Nighclub & Lounge on April 10.Police testified after opening statements, and a video of the shooting was shown as part of day one testimony. The prosecution opened their arguments referencing the clips of security footage that they argued will show Walker keyed in on Valentine and opened fire – with Valentine, unarmed, attempting to block his face with his hands. They said Walker fired eight rounds, striking Valentine five times, before he fell to the floor. Sarah Hradek, Walker's lawyer, admitted that this “isn't a whodunit.” She said Walker shot Valentine but it was self-defense. She agreed with the prosecution that the jurors would see a video that shows Walker shooting Valentine, but she asked the jurors to keep in mind why this happened because the video wouldn't reveal that. The defense said they will show evidence that Valentine shot Walker in 2016, where Walker and another person were treated for injuries at a hospitalThere were 10 others also injured during the club shooting. Another man, Timothy Rush, 32, of Cedar Rapids, is charged with killing Nicole Owens, 35, and Marvin L. Cox, 31, the same night. Rush's trial is set for March 28.The state is accusing jurors of leveling “excessive” damages and being “influenced by passion or prejudice” in awarding $12.8 million last month to a Cedar Rapids contractor who helped build the 14-story Stead Family Children's Hospital. The Iowa Attorney General Office — representing the University of Iowa and the state Board of Regents — in court documents gives three reasons a Johnson County District Court judge should grant a new trial and a second chance to defend against allegations from contractor Modern Piping:They argued that the award was excessive, and appears to have been influenced by passion or prejudice; that the damages were not supported by sufficient evidence and were contrary to law; and that the university and regents were harmed by legal errors in jury instructions. The state, in its motion for a new trial, offered an alternative remedy for what it characterized as an unjust award — either vacating the award altogether or reducing it to $2.5 million. The court documents are the latest in the legal drama surrounding the Children's Hospital project, the price of which has ballooned to over $400 million due to poor management, bad luck, and legal rewards. The counting of Iowans' votes continues a week after the Nov. 8 election as state and local officials this week will conduct...
This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Thursday, November 3.One last day of sunny and pleasant weather for the week. According to the National Weather Service it will be sunny with a high near 73 degrees in the Cedar Rapids area on Thursday. It will be breezy, with a wind of 15 to 20 mph gusting as high as 35 mph. On Thursday night there will be a low of around 60 degrees. A chance for rainfall will increase as Thursday heads into Friday morning.A new ramp and exit change are coming Thursday morning for drivers traveling south on Interstate 380 to Interstate 80, as work continues on the massive reconstruction of the Interstates 80 and 380 interchange. The new I-380 southbound to I-80 westbound ramp is opening, which will simplify the interchange, according to an update from the Iowa Department of Transportation.Earlier this year, in August, the last loop ramp closed and the flyover ramp from I-380 southbound to I-80 eastbound opened.Come Thursday morning, southbound traffic on I-380 to will use one exit — Exit 0 — to travel in either direction on I-80. The exit point for Exit 0 will be about a quarter mile earlier than expected. After exiting, traffic will split into two depending on which direction they plan to travel on I-80. Drivers heading east toward Davenport should keep left and use the new flyover ramp that opened in August. Anyone heading west on I-80 toward Des Moines should keep right.A judge has denied a motion to dismiss the first degree murder charge against Dimione Walker — one of two men accused in April's fatal shooting inside the Taboo Nightclub & Lounge. The motion, filed earlier this month by Walker's attorneys, claimed that his right to a speedy trial was violated because his trial did not take place within 90 days of the trial information being filed. Sixth Judicial District Judge Andrew Chappell heard arguments Monday during a hearing and denied the motion Wednesday.Walker, 28, of Coralville, is accused of killing Michael Valentine, 25, in the April 10 shooting at the downtown Cedar Rapids club. Police said another man, Timothy Rush, 32, of Cedar Rapids, killed two others. Ten people were injured.Judge Chappell argued in favor of the prosecution having good cause for the delay for the trial, as authorities in Illinois had delayed Walker's extradition after he had been arrested there.Iowa schools must consider the requests of families with medically vulnerable students who wish to have teachers and classmates near the students wear face masks, a federal judge ruled this week.Gov. Kim Reynolds on Wednesday said she will appeal the ruling. The ruling comes from a lawsuit in which 11 Iowa families from 10 school districts asked the courts to block a state law passed in 2021 that prohibits schools from requiring staff and students to wear face masks, a common mitigation practice early in the global COVID-19 pandemic. What the ruling means is Iowa law still prohibits schools from requiring all staff and students to wear face masks but that districts must consider accommodating medically vulnerable students who request staff and...

Around 2:15 a.m., he exited I-380 and took the Highway 30 West exit, where he lost control of the vehicle and rolled several times. He was pronounced dead as a result of the crash. The incident is being investigated by the Cedar Rapids Police Department and the Iowa State Patrol.Defense attorneys for one of two men accused in April's fatal shooting inside the Taboo Nightclub & Lounge argued that charges should be dropped against him due to the prosecution violating his right to a speedy trial. 28-year-old Dimione Walker, of Coralville, is accused of killing Michael Valentine, 25, in the April 10 shooting at the downtown Cedar Rapids club. Police said another man, Timothy Rush, 32, of Cedar Rapids, killed two others. The trial information was filed in May, before Walker had been extradited to Iowa.District Attorney Nick Maybanks said that local authorities tried repeatedly to get Walker to Linn County quickly, but authorities in Illinois, where he had been arrested, were resistant. The defense countered that the prosecution could have gotten around this problem by filing charges against him after he was extradited back to Iowa.Judge Andrew Chappell oversaw Monday's hearing, and will determine the fate of the motion and other motions, at a later date.According to the Associated Press there were no winners in Monday's Powerball drawing, which means a massive payout awaits on Wednesday. The lack of a winner means the next drawing Wednesday night will be for a $1.2 billion jackpot. The increased jackpot will be the 4th-largest in U.S. history. The biggest prize was a $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot won by three ticketholders in 2016.No one has hit all of the necessary six numbers since Aug. 3, meaning there have now been 38 consecutive draws without a jackpot winner. This shows just how slim the odds are of winning the jackpot: right now the odds of winning are listed at 1 in 292.2 million.

City High parents and others have donated $1,500 so far to fix vandalism done to the school last weekend in what some have described as a senior prank gone awry. More than 500 people have signed an online petition to support Assistant Principal Scott Jespersen, who parents and students said was placed on leave following the incident. Parents who spoke with the Gazette said it is their understanding that a school administrator let some students into the building Sunday night to hang balloons and streamers, but other students came and damaged the building by spray painting walls, pouring syrup on items and cutting up historical photos, among other actions. The school district would not comment to The Gazette, saying it is a personnel matter.

I Am (I'm Me)". Las canciones de Twisted Sister "Under the Blade" y "We're Not Gonna Take It" fueron mencionadas específicamente en las convocatorias del Senado. A.J. En 2001, Koch Records lanzó un álbum tributo titulado "Twisted Forever|Twisted Forever - A Tribute To The Legendary Twisted Sister". Of Filth, Joan Jett, Sebastian Bach, and Hammerfall.
This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Wednesday, April 27. Wednesday will begin with what should be the last round of frost for the week before becoming another crisp day, with warmer weather and rain on the horizon. According to the National Weather Service, the frost will melt early in the Cedar Rapids area and the high will creep up to 54 degrees during the day. It will become increasingly cloudy and windy as the day moves on, with wind gusts of up to 20 mph increasing to 30 mph Wednesday night. Over $17,000 in donations and gifts meant for University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics patients — largely for those diagnosed with cancer — and families were unaccounted for, improperly used, unsupported or missing, the state auditor said in a report released Tuesday. Questions around former administrative specialist Anna Maria Hernandez's handling of donations, gift cards and purchases prompted hospital officials to call on the auditor to investigate the UIHC Care Coordination Division in February 2021 Hernandez, 41, of Iowa City, had been the division's administrative services specialist since July 1, 2018, but assumed many titles since starting there in 2006. An investigation into $1,350 in missing gift cards eventually led to administrators calling university police, and Hernandez was put on paid leave in November of 2020. She resigned that month, and the state launched an audit into the possible misuse of funds from 2012 to the end of 2020. One month after Hernandez resigned her position at UIHC, she was arrested on suspicion of misappropriating nearly $75,000 from the Fox Hallow Condominium Owner's Association, for which she was the lone board member. According to a police report, she withdrew cash, wrote checks to herself, made wire transfers and linked her Venmo, CashApp, and PayPal accounts to the association's bank account. More charges will be filed against a man accused of murder in a shooting at a Cedar Rapids nightclub, police said Tuesday. Timothy Rush, 32, is one of two suspects who have been arrested in relation to the shooting, which happened at Taboo nightclub on April 10. Rush originally received several charges in the shooting death of Nicole Owens, who was his girlfriend and the mother of his 1-year-old child. On Tuesday police charged him in connection with 5 of the 10 people who were injured during the shooting. One of these men who was injured, Marvin Cox, is still in the hospital in serious condition after being shot in the head. Another man was arrested near Chicago on April 18 in relation to the shooting. Dimione Walker, 29, was arrested by federal marshals and is being held in jail in Illinois until he can be extradited back to Iowa. He is being accused in the death of Michael Valentine. Iowa will become just the fourth state with 16 weeks or fewer of state unemployment benefits under legislation that needs only Gov. Kim Reynolds' signature to become law. The reduction in state unemployment benefits from 26 weeks to 16 was approved Tuesday by majority Republicans in the Iowa Legislature. Reynolds made a similar proposal earlier this year, and is likely to sign it into law. “I just think we need to be doing everything we can to encourage people to stay in the workforce and to stay in the game,” Reynolds said Tuesday. “ The legislation also changes the requirements for receiving unemployment payments while looking for work. Before the change, unemployed Iowans had six weeks that they could turn down jobs that paid less than their previous position while still receiving unemployment payments. With the new change, the job applicant would have to accept a job at 90 percent of their former pay at week 1, with this dropping 60 percent of their former pay by week 8. This is intended to pressure unemployed workers to either accept lesser paying jobs or to be cut off from unemployment payments. The bill passed on Tuesday with
This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Tuesday, April 19. It will become increasingly cloudy during the day, Tuesday, with rain arriving Tuesday night. According to the National Weather Service there will be a high near 52 degrees in the Cedar Rapids area. The chance for rain will mostly be in the overnight hours as Tuesday becomes Wednesday, the low will be around 40 degrees. A man wanted for murder shortly after the attack at a downtown nightclub this month was tracked down by federal marshals to a Chicago suburb and was arrested Monday. He is the second man detained in the shooting that killed two and injured 10. Dimione Jamal Walker, 29, was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service in Matteson, Ill. He faces charges in Linn County of first-degree murder, intimidation with a dangerous weapon, going armed with intent and felon in possession of a firearm. He was also wanted by the Illinois Department of Corrections on a charge of parole violation — possession of a weapon. The other suspect in the case, Timothy L. Rush, 32, is in jail on charges that include a second-degree murder charge that he killed Nicole Owens, 35. Michael Valentine, 25, also was killed in the attack. Authorities would not confirm if they believe Walker is responsible for that murder, and would not further explain why he faces a first-degree murder charge while the other suspected gunman faces a second-degree murder charge. Save CR Heritage, a nonprofit group dedicated to preserving historic properties, launched a petition drive this month for the closure of Garfield Elementary School to be put on a Cedar Rapids school board meeting agenda. Under a new Iowa law, residents can bring an agenda item to a school board with signatures of 500 district voters. If enough signatures are gathered by the end of the month, the closure would be placed on the May 9 school board meeting agenda. As part of a new school district facilities plan Arthur and Garfield Elementaries are set to be closed to make way for a new elementary school. Both buildings were opened in 1915, and while the buildings will not be demolished, there are no plans for how they will be repurposed. This is why the heritage organization's members want to get on the agenda so the public's views on future plans can be addressed. Starting this week, masks now are optional for most patients, visitors and fully vaccinated staff members at UnityPoint Health hospitals in Eastern Iowa. Health system officials announced a revision of mask policies at hospitals and associated clinics at UnityPoint Health-St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, UnityPoint Health-Allen Hospital in Waterloo and UnityPoint Health-Finley Hospital in Dubuque. However, masks still are recommended for those who are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19, are immunocompromised or otherwise desire to wear a mask. People who have tested positive for COVID are also recommended to mask. Revision to masking policies is based on community transmission levels of COVID-19, officials said in their announcement Monday. Currently, all three hospitals are in areas with low virus transmission. Support for this news update was provided by New Pioneer Food Co-op. Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Abby Finkenauer of Cedar Rapids qualifies for the primary ballot, the Iowa Supreme Court ruled Friday — rejecting a lower court decision and allowing her to continue her campaign for the nomination and chance to face Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley. The court's unanimous decision leaves Finkenauer as the likely front-runner in a race with two lesser-known candidates ahead of Iowa's June 7 primary. The winner will run against Grassley, seeking an eighth term, provided he wins a GOP primary against state Sen. Jim Carlin as widely expected. The high court rejected a lower court's ruling that found that Finkenauer failed to meet a state law that requires candidates to submit at least 100 signatures from at least 19 counties to qualify for the ballot. The justices agreed that a Polk County judge was wrong when he ruled that three signatures from two counties were invalid, leaving Finkenauer without enough signatures. The ruling noted that under the current laws missing or incorrect dates are not one of the current valid reasons for sustaining an objection to petitions. A Cedar Rapids man was arrested Thursday after he allegedly drove at and struck a construction worker during a confrontation over a roadway closure. Bruce Marlon Schutte, 66, faces charges of willful injury causing bodily injury, assault while displaying a dangerous weapon and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident. According to a criminal complaint, Schutte approached a road closed sign in the 2300 block of 18th Street SW in Cedar Rapids Thursday and tried to move it out of the way. He was confronted by construction workers, who he told to move or he would run them over. Schutte allegedly got back in his car and accelerated toward a worker who had asked him to go a different direction. He hit the worker and sent him onto the hood of his car, injuring the worker's left knee, hip and elbow. Schutte then left the scene. Timothy Ladell Rush, 32, is accused of fatally shooting Nicole Owens, 35, the mother of his child. Another person, Michael Valentine, 25, was also killed in the shooting, which took place early Sunday in the downtown Taboo Nightclub and Lounge. Police have not said who they think killed Valentine and have said they believe a second gunman was involved. But they have not announced any new arrests in the case. In the 2012 case, Rush, who was intoxicated, lead officers on a foot chase before being caught. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Wednesday, April 13. Rain is likely on Wednesday as storms move through the state. According to the National Weather Service after the storm system moves through Wednesday morning there will still be some chances for scattered storms and thunderstorms before 1 p.m. in the Cedar Rapids area. Then there will still be a chance for rain in the afternoon ibut the severity should be less severe. The overall chance for precipitation is listed at 70 percent. The temperatures will also cool into the low 50s, which is where they look to be staying until the middle of next week. Standing inside a distilled grain storage facility at a Central Iowa biofuels processing plant Tuesday, President Joe Biden repeated a pledge his administration announced earlier in the day: They plan to make the higher E15 blend of ethanol available for sale during the upcoming summer months. “I feel like I'm preaching to the choir here,” Biden said to a few dozen invited guests at the event, as distilled grain poured into the facility beside him. The event, which marked Biden's first visit to Iowa since his election in 2020, was held on the grounds of one of 12 facilities in Iowa operated by POET, a biofuels processing company based just across the state's northwest border in Sioux Falls, S.D. The most common ethanol blend sold at gas stations is E10, and not all Iowa gas stations offer E15. Under current federal law, the higher-blend E15 cannot be sold during the summer driving period, defined as June 1 through Sept. 15, because of concerns it adds to smog when the weather gets hot. The Biden administration announced Tuesday that its Environmental Protection Agency will issue an emergency action that will make the E15 blend available through this summer. The action will cite the strain on the nation's fuel supply caused by the Russian military's invasion of Ukraine. A man suspected of killing Nicole Owens, 35, https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/2-dead-10-hurt-in-shooting-at-cedar-rapids-nightclub/ (in the early Sunday shooting in a downtown nightclub) is the father of a baby they had in 2021, records show, and he wrote in a court document that he had once worked at the club. Timothy Ladell Rush, 32, faces charges of second-degree murder and a handful of other serious charges. Police arrested him Monday and he had his initial appearance in court Tuesday morning. Owens and Rush are the parents of a girl born in early 2021 in Cedar Rapids, Linn County birth records show. A criminal complaint released Tuesday against Rush does not address who police believe shot and killed a second fatal victim in the attack https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/2-dead-10-hurt-in-shooting-at-cedar-rapids-nightclub/ (at the Taboo Nightclub and Lounge), 415 Third St. SE., that also injured 10 others. Police said that Michael Valentine, 25, was also killed. Police Chief Wayne Jerman told reporters Sunday investigators believe two gunmen were involved and described the attack as targeted. The panel reviewing Cedar Rapids' charter, the document that outlines the scope and duties of city government, will extend the timeline for its once-a-decade review. Initially slated to wrap up work no later than May 1, the Cedar Rapids City Council on Tuesday granted the nine-member Charter Review Commission until June 30 to complete its review and extended the members' terms at the commission's request. So far, the commission has not recommended major shake-ups to the makeup of council or to the city's council-manager form of government, which voters adopted when they approved a “home rule” charter in 2005. Enjoy your warm, dry weather during the day on Tuesday, because rain looks to be coming Tuesday night and Wednesday, and cold will be making a brief return after that. According to the National Weather Service it will be partly sunny in the Cedar Rapids area with a high near 67 degrees. It will be breezy, with a wind of 10-15 mph increasing to 15-20 mph in the afternoon. Wind gusts could reach 35 mph. The chance for rain will start scaling up after 4 p.m., with rain and potentially thunderstorms becoming more likely after midnight and heading into Wednesday. There were several developments Monday in the aftermath of Sunday's shooting at a Cedar Rapids nightclub that killed two and injured 10 others. A suspect in a shooting early Sunday outside Taboo Nightclub and Lounge in Cedar Rapids was arrested Monday on a second-degree murder charge and other counts. Police announced that Timothy Ladell Rush, 32, faces charges of second-degree murder, willful injury, intimidation with a dangerous weapon, reckless use of a firearm and possession of a firearm as a felon. Rush was taken to the Linn County Jail, where he was held for now without bail. A criminal complaint outlining details of the charges was not available Monday evening. Police still have not provided a motive for what they are calling a targeted shooting. They also have stated they believe two gunmen were involved in the shooting. Police did identify the two victims of the shooting, both Cedar Rapids residents who had been at the club to celebrate a friend's birthday party. Police identified victims of the double homicide as Michael Valentine, 25, and Nicole Owens, 35. Cedar Rapids Democrat Abby Finkenauer is appealing a decision by an Iowa district court judge to throw her off the June 7 primary election ballot for a U.S. Senate seat. “After careful review, I have decided to challenge this deeply partisan decision to the Iowa Supreme Court,” Finkenauer, a former member of the U.S. House, said in a statement Monday. Finkenauer will ask the court to reverse a ruling issued Sunday night by Polk County District Court Judge Scott Beattie that she did not submit enough signatures on nomination petitions to qualify for the Democratic primary to determine the party's U.S. Senate nominee in the November general election. His decision overruled the State Objections Panel that rejected challenges to Finkenauer's campaign raised by GOP activists. The panel decided Finkenauer had met the ballot requirement to acquire at least 3,500 signatures, including at least 100 signatures each in at least 19 counties. Even if Finkenauer is able to get back on the ballot she faces a steep challenge, having to first win the Democratic primary before taking on forever incumbent Senator Chuck Grassley. The Linn County Board of Supervisors will meet Wednesday to decide where $11 million of its total $44 million in American Rescue Plan Act funding will go. During Wednesday's formal meeting, supervisors will decide which of around 120 projects from over 90 groups to fund with this first allocation of ARPA dollars. The county has already allocated $11 million to itself for lost revenue and administrative costs, a category allowed under the ARPA rules. I don't have time to read off all 120 projects, but if you're interested in reading about them before the vote we have a searchable database of all of them in the story on the front page of thegazette.com Support for this news update was provided by New Pioneer Food Co-op.

Show notes What is "Diversity" & "Inclusion"?Facets of diversity are all aspects of human differences. These include gender, race, ethnicity, age, physical ability, gender identity, national origin, language, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and more.Inclusion is making everyone feel welcomed and included.Inclusion requires having a culture & environment where everyone can thrive regardless of background differences. This inclusive culture fosters respect & belonging in which we hear, appreciate, & value everyone and their perspectives.Inclusive organizations work with individuals to recognize and eliminate both explicit and implicit biases. They may do this with intentional efforts like professional & skills development as well as addressing awareness, education, and policy. Diversity measures representation by counting the presence of varying identities and characteristics. But Diversity itself is not the final goal.Diversity is the metric while Inclusion is the goal. For now, while representation is so disparate among certain groups, diversity is an important metric. It’s hard to be truly inclusive with such professional inequities. “Ultimately what we want is for people to belong. So not just be asked to the dance and sitting around and staring at everybody else but really feeling like you can go out on that dance floor and dance, like nobody's watching and it's fine because this is your community.” - Pamela Douglas Why is achieving diversity important?Diversity is a virtue in and of itself. But more than that, diverse groups make better decisions, are more innovative, are better at problem solving, and have an expanded talent pool.Cardiovascular medicine benefits from having a diverse workforce. Science performed by diverse groups has greater scientific novelty and produces higher impact papers in higher impact journals. Is there a link between professional diversity and healthcare inequities?YES!Physician diversity reduces healthcare disparities and improves healthcare quality.Physicians who train in diverse environments are more culturally competent when treating underrepresented groups.Underrepresented physicians are more likely to serve underrepresented populations.Underrepresented patients are more likely to follow the recommendations of physicians who look like them. This enhanced trust is critical to an effective patient-physician relationship. In the context of clinical trials and guidelines, underrepresented physician scientists help diversify our clinical trial participants, resulting in a more robust and representative evidence base. How are we doing in cardiology with respect to diversity? There have been improvements but we have a long way to go.Women comprise 43% of internal medicine resident physician...
