Read on for today's agenda below prepared by David (thank you very much). - Retired US Diplomat to 5 different nations  David Hunter shares his knowledge, passion, interest, and experience.1)US Senator Graham's Grand Bargain for Middle East Peace?: Last week, Sen. Graham announced a 'grand plan' he has been discussing with the government of Saudi Arabia. It involves having US make an official 'defense agreement' with the Saudi Kingdom, and in return for that big US favor, Saudi Arabia will recognize the State of Israel. He adds that, as part of the grand bargain, Israel must move quickly to solve the Palestine crisis. Will Graham's plan work?2)Will Netanyahu Invade Rafah if Hostage Talks Fail?: The Israeli Prime Minister is threatening that if a Peace Deal with Hamas is not reached imminently, he will invade Rafa. This is in direct contradiction to the Biden Administration, who wishes that at minimum, all Rafa's 1.5 million civilians be evacuated safely and given humane conditions after evacuation. And Biden worries a full scale invasion will trigger regional conflicts. So can Netanyahu just ignore US demands and invade?3)How Many US Arms Firms Are Selling Weapons or Military Technology to Israel?: Given the demand of tens of thousands of US students protesting at US Universities demanding they cut ties to US Arms Companies supplying Israel's war machine, how many and which companies are doing this? Is the US military complex contributing in a major way to Israel's Gaza war slaughter?4)Are Nuclear Weapons Still Useful As A Deterrent?: In the Cold War, the US and USSR both had massive amounts of nuclear weapons and could destroy each other. That led to what was called the doctrine of 'Mutual Assured Destruction' or MAD. But with smaller nations now getting nuclear weapons, does MAD still work? If not, why have them?

Ever since the end of World War II, we have been hearing predictions and warnings about the upcoming Third World War. For almost 80 years the war drums have been beaten, and trillions invested in Mutual Assured Destruction, known as MAD. Not only nations and corporations that can profit from war, but even so-called prophets for profit have been selling imminent war for decades. Now, while the Bible is clear about wars and rumors of wars, too many Christians are obsessed to the point of not fulfilling their true calling. Also on the program, Jim Calhoun stops by to share some thoughts on why the instability in Eastern Europe. Now, do you believe in this ministry? Are we stuck in a Suspended Human Evolution? Is it preventing us to develop a process to "Care for Peace" at a global scale? What can we learn from healthcare professionals to understand this concept from an individual to a systemic level? Why the Mutual Assured Destruction in the early 1960s meant the end of the First Human Evolution? And how can we launch the Second one in this decade? On International Peace Day 2023, the call to rethink the international system to prevent or intervene in growing conflicts and insecurity challenges is expanding in different power circles from governments, IR and Peace fields to feminist, environmental, societal and spiritual ones. How are we each contributing to our race or Planet extinction or... to the quest for long lasting peace? Reports that our sovereign air space is being repeatedly penetrated, and that it has evidently been going on unnoticed for some time, are profoundly unsettling. Unfortunately, they highlight a serious national vulnerability heretofore unknown to most Americans. That vulnerability arises from the fact that, after President Nixon signed the U.S.-Soviet Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty in 1972, America basically gave up on most active and even passive defenses of our country. The theory was that having agreed to forswear effective anti-missile systems, it made little sense to maintain comprehensive air defenses, extensive protection for our leadership or any real civil defense for our population. Instead, we embraced a notion called Mutual Assured Destruction, or MAD. Our perfect vulnerability backed by a nuclear deterrent was said to be the formula for security. MAD is, well, mad. Clearly, we need to defend America once again. This is Frank Gaffney.

Depending on your age, MAD could mean a few different things.  In the 50s, it was a magazine.  In the 60s and 70s, it was Mutual Assured Destruction.  Now there's a new acronym in town: Massive Attacks of Disruption.  We've seen a few just in the past few years.  Pandemics, riots, and the chip shortage have caused some of the biggest disruptions in the history of humanity, and they all happened in just the past two years.  If these become more frequent or more intense, you may be pining for the days of duck and cover.  Hey, at least it came with a cute duck mascot back then. Tom welcomes new guest Michael Snyder from The Economic Collapse Blog. Michael discusses how people assume war with Russia can't happen because of Mutual Assured Destruction. We do need to think about the risks of conflict escalating and Russia has modernized its strategic arsenal while the United States largely has not. The Russians have also developed anti-ballistic missile systems which are quite advanced. As a result, we are quite unprepared for such a conflict. Meanwhile the U.S. military is mostly focused on implementing woke policies. When the cold war ended we declared ourselves the victors and focused on other parts of our military. 9/11 brought spending on anti-terrorism in Afghanistan and Iraq which became large money pits. The military today is increasingly underperforming which we witnessed when the U.S. withdrew from Afghanistan. U.S. foreign policy has been isolating various countries like Russia, China, and India. This is resulting in these countries coming closer together. Most do not want this war and if we're not careful it could escalate. Countries are likely to take advantage of the United States because Biden is perceived as weak. This is a window of opportunity for other nations. A diplomatic solution that would have kept Russia out of Ukraine was entirely possible but the Biden administration took a hard-line approach. The current method of calculating inflation has been changed multiple times to make it look lower. The actual numbers (ShadowStats.com) are over fifteen percent if it was calculated like it was in the 80s. We've been spending trillions that we don't have and thus diluting the money supply at an ever-increasing pace. Now with the problems in Europe, we're going to have further supply problems and therefore inflation is going to worsen to the next level. We're seeing the energy problems coming out of Europe in part due to their reliance on unreliable green energy solutions. Food supplies are going to get increasingly tight since much of the wheat for Europe comes from Ukraine and Russia. Many farmers are going to be unable to purchase fertilizer due to the costs. MAD TV is the world we are being treated to with every video and audio report about Ukraine. Nearly every major news report from 'snake island' to the 'ghost of Kiev' and front-line Zelensky, has been raw propaganda as if the fiction writers aren't even trying anymore. Putin has placed his Nuclear Deterrence Forces on high alert and the west has chosen to laugh in his face. The U.S. and NATO pushed weapons, troops, sanctions, threats, and Ukrainian membership in NATO, close enough to Russia's front doorstep that Putin was left with essentially no other option. Western media and some politicians have salivated at the conflict and reported virtually nothing accurately, all while virtue signaling their concern for civilians and antagonizing Russia at the same time. Pearl Harbor syndrome has even kicked in with some people developing a hatred for Russians in general. But if you distrust western media and NATO, MAD TV condemns you as a Russian or traitor.

“Skin in the Game is about four topics in one: a) uncertainty and the reliability of knowledge (both practical and scientific, assuming there is a difference), or in less polite words bullshit detection, b) symmetry in human affairs, that is, fairness, justice, responsibility, and reciprocity, c) information sharing in transactions, and d) rationality in complex systems and in the real world. That these four cannot be disentangled is something that is obvious when one has…skin in the game.” In this episode of Made You Think, Neil and I discuss Skin in the Game: Hidden Asymmetries in Daily Life by Nassim Taleb. In this book, Taleb touches in many of the topics he’s covered in his previous work, such as virtue signaling and probability, and most of all, true risk taking. "[...] what people resent—or should resent—is the person at the top who has no skin in the game [...]" We cover a wide range of topics, including: Academia and its capability —or lack of it— of predicting real life. Having skin in the game and how it affects your behavior. How minorities impose their preferences to majorities. Judging a complex system by its elements. Sam Harris’ scalding opinion of Nassim Taleb. Virtue signaling. And much more. Please enjoy, and be sure to grab a copy of Skin in the Game by Nassim Taleb. Contrasts and relations between his previous works and Skin in the Game. A greater focus in philosophy and morals, rather than the mathematical focus of his other books. Skin in the game concept for business and non-business people. 06:38 – Taleb's use of criticism of other people, perhaps partially for publicity reasons. Criticizing people at your own weight vs needless harassment. The Ayn Rand effect. 08:50 – The books’ introduction. Academia vs real life. You can’t predict the behavior of a system by studying the behavior of individual elements within the system. Emerging qualities of complex systems. Academia back-explaining knowledge that’s created practically. Skin in the game for Roman architects and medicine scientists. 14:57 – True progress is only possible when you actually stand to lose something should you fail. Defining “rent-seeking” as opposite for “skin in the game”. Different types sorts of investments and whether they constitute rent-seeking. 19:25 – The contents of the book can become a lens through which you see the world. 20:03 – Sponsors. Get a shot of Four Sigmatic Mushroom Coffee mixed with MCT oil powder from Perfecto Keto. Follow our advice, we have skin in the coff… in the game. 20:59 – You can’t judge whether something is robust, if it can survive stressors, if you’re not at risk in case it can’t. The test of time. 23:30 – Business plans and their usefulness, or usefulness for procrastination. 24:54 – Book 2: A First Look at Agency. Advice, and knowing when to listen to it. Advice that’s helpful to the person offering it, rather than who’s being advised. Incentives and metrics under judgement. 26:50 – Judging actions by their intentions, rather than their effects. Nazism vs Communism. Diets, cholesterol, weight, and its effects on health as single elements of a complex system. 35:36 – Avoiding doctors when you have low-risks health issues. Prayer and religion developing related to health, and the high risk of medical procedures. The Placebo Effect. 39:20 – Book 3: That Great Asymmetry. Ant and ant colony metaphor. Predicting a complex system’s behavior through the behavior of singular elements. A small vocal minority affecting the behavior of large groups. The minority effect on holiday greetings and restaurant choices. 45:56 – Gun regulation, and changes in policy meant for advertising. Virtue signaling and what you do out of your beliefs, versus what’s done for public recognition. Standing up for your opinions even if, or specially if, it has social consequences. 50:57 – The free market, bottom-up or top-down models. Changing the parameters of individuals will not change the parameters of the emerging system. 52:57 – Book 4: Wolves Among Dogs. The trade off between security and freedom. Working as a dog, comfortably but restrained, versus working as a wolf, with much more freedom, but less safety. Tactics big companies use domesticating their employees. English manners as a way to domesticate lower classes. 00:59:39 – Suicide bombers and Mutual Assured Destruction. Reasoning and incentives in terrorists perspective, and how to discourage them to commit suicide. Sacrificing oneself and sacrificing the whole nation. 01:02:26 – Freedom and social media. Voluntarily adopting habits of the lower class as a signal of freedom. Nassim Taleb and Twitter. 01:05:53 – Book 5: Being Alive Means Taking Certain Risks. Politicians and relatability. Feeling like a politician is a real person, or simply a scripted facade. The case for Trump and his relatability. 01:08:36 – Resentment against people at the top who don’t have skin in the game, who are not really risking anything. Economic equality and what it truly means. Unfair barriers put up to keep people in the 1% when they might not really be earning their spot anymore. Florence example, where a handful of  families has kept the power for more than 5 centuries. 01:14:38 – Peer approval, the minority effect, and real freedom. 01:17:06 – Book 6: Being Alive Means Taking Certain Risks. Between two people who are equally qualified, the person who looks less “the part” is a wiser choice, as they have had to overcome more challenges to get to where they are. Quarterbacks vs common sense. Elitism and food: steaks, fast-food, and wine. Big mansions and living away from everything. 01:27:38 – Virtue signaling. Protesting or complaining without putting action behind your beliefs. Charity that’s mostly for show and its negative consequences. 01:35:12 – History and violent events: decreasing in frequency, but increasing rapidly in intensity. War, urban violence, and the magnitude of violence. Life that isn’t covered in history outside of big, dramatic events. 01:41:26 – Book 7: Deeper Into Agency. Religion, Beliefs, and Skin in the Game. Sam Harris, Nassim Taleb, and Jordan Peterson. Religion, science, and scientism. 01:49:22 – Sam Harris’ podcast and its infamous guests. 01:50:38 – Book 8: Risk and Rationality. The last section of the book, and concepts in it that are being explored in-depth by Taleb for the first time. “Skin in the Game” as an entry point for Taleb’s work. 01:52:26 – You don’t necessarily need to know what is the reason for something, even if you know that there is a reason. 01:54:31 – Ergodicity and non-ergodicity, or assembled probability vs individual probability. Paranoia and risk reversion. Risk taking and relative risk rather than objective risk. Bathtubs’ and bullets’ potential to scale to kill people. Terrorism, gun violence and non-multiplicative risks. 02:01:35 – Ties back to Taleb’s previous work. Static and dynamics probabilities and life expectancy. 02:05:37 – Wrapping up and sponsor time! The New York Times has a splashy interactive editorial, "Trump’s Nuclear Arsenal." It's good, but gets a few things wrong -- things that matter like Mutual Assured Destruction, Robert McNamara's famous thought experiment on sizing US nuclear forces, and how the US targets nuclear weapons. Also, they misuse decimate.   Aaron and Jeffrey talk through the problems with US nuclear policy and Jeffrey's proposal to state that the US will not use nuclear weapon against a target if a conventional one will do.   Links of Note:   The NYT Op Ed.   Jeffrey and Scott Sagan's article, and its shorter, op-ed version in the Washington Post.    Aaron's recently revived podcast, Turkey Wonk.

Jerry Pournelle (author, journalist, editor, technology columnist, and military textbook writer) is today's featured guest. Topics include: Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein, Larry Niven and other authors he has been friends with; how the downfall of the Soviet Union was an engineered event, planned decades in advance, which worked exactly as planned (and specifically what that plan was); how he orchestrated the political campaigns of Barry Goldwater, Jr., and Sam Yorty; his friends and involvement in the Survivalist Movement, and his being editor of the magazine Survive which was closely allied with the magazine Soldier of Fortune; political stories from The Cold War and Mutual Assured Destruction; a few words about his and Larry Niven's new novel Escape from Hell; the difficulties of his chemotherapy; the good news that he is now cancer free. Hosted by Stephen Euin Cobb, this is the January 28, 2009 episode of The Future And You. [Running time: 65 minutes] Doctor Jerry Pournelle has written more than thirty novels and at least thirteen books of non-fiction. More than a dozen of his novels, he coauthored with his friend Larry Niven, including The Mote in God's Eye, Lucifer's Hammer, Footfall, Inferno; and their new sequel to Inferno: Escape Fom Hell. Novels, however, have been only a portion of Jerry Pournelle's work. After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he acquired Master's degrees in both experimental statistics and systems engineering, and Doctorates in both psychology and political science. He cowrote a military textbook called The Strategy of Technology which was required reading at West Point and the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. He helped to write a portion of Ronald Reagan's State of the Union Address concerning a missile defense system which the media at the time enjoyed making fun of and calling Star Wars, since they believed the technology needed to shoot down incoming missiles with our own missiles was impossible. He worked in operations research at Boeing, The Aerospace Corporation, and North American Rockwell Space Division. He was founding President of the Pepperdine Research Institute. And he was a columnist for Byte Magazine beginning in 1982.
