This week, we're unpacking Adobe's holiday shopping report, the AI bot takeover, and the dead internet theory. As 2025 kicks off with powerful demand for both in-person experiences and AI-driven, frictionless online shopping, we're peering into the future of the tension. PLUS: Phillip the Time Capsule Guy takes us back in time, and 5,000 years into the future. Is AI Just Making Spam More Scalable?Key takeaways:[00:14:30] “Black Friday shopping is one of the most isolating things you can do now. It used to be a team sport, something you'd all go out and do…you get up early, you get the coffee and the hot chocolate in your warm coats, and you go out and you have a good time together amid consumerism madness.” – Brian[00:20:24] “I think the return to physical connection and this loneliness epidemic is driving people back to real-life connection.” – Phillip[00:46:55] “We are going to be building from this point forward websites or ecommerce experiences, channels, APIs. Anything that we build in ecommerce from henceforth will be done thoughtfully to assist both humans and agents to be able to seamlessly purchase from a brand.” – Phillip[00:58:04] "Time capsules by Westinghouse and Panasonic might be humanity's greatest contributions to cultural preservation." – Phillip [01:01:20] “This is part of Mythopoeia. This is how you build a myth that extends into the future. You do stuff like this that's an extension of the story. And Westinghouse may be revived 5000 years in the future because of these time capsules.” – BrianAssociated Links:Future Commerce Upcoming EventsThe Future Now: January 28th, 2025. This recording from May 7, 2024. Signum University Graduate School presents Thesis Theater with Trevor Brierly on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 2pm ET, on the subject of Tolkien's "Vision of Faërie" in "Smith of Wootton Major." Tolkien's story "Smith of Wootton Major", written in 1965, and an accompanying essay written at the same time, provide a rich understanding of Tolkien's "Vision of Faërie" that goes significantly beyond earlier critical works such "On Fairy-stories" and "Mythopoeia". A close reading and analysis approach to "Smith" and the essay indicate that Tolkien saw Faërie as necessary, universal, beneficent and transformative to humanity. In order to fully appreciate what "Smith" has to say about Faërie, it must be understood that "Smith" is neither an allegory nor primarily autobiographical and should be seen as a "fairy-story", a story about a human journeying in the Faërie realm. The essay adds to our understanding of Faërie as it tells a parallel story concerning Faërie intervening in Wootton Major, to restore contact with the enchantment of Faërie that is being lost. "Smith" and the essay together are important for understanding Tolkien's increasingly sophisticated and elevated view of Faërie, which he claimed was "as necessary for the health and complete functioning of the Human as is sunlight for physical life." About the Presenter: N. Trevor Brierly is a software engineer with more than 25 years of experience in the industry. He has a background in literature with an MLIS from the University of Texas at Austin and a BA in English from George Mason University. His research interests include worldbuilding in speculative fiction, Tolkien, Frank Herbert, Le Guin, Shakespeare, and the Renaissance. He has presented working papers on “Lord of the Rings”, “Dune”, “King Lear”, worldbuilding, and other topics. He has published an essay “Worldbuilding Design Patterns in the Works of J.R.R. Tolkien” in “Sub-creating Arda” (Walking Tree Publishers, 2019) and is co-editor of “Discovering Dune” from McFarland Books (2022). He lives in Northern Virginia and enjoys books, jazz, tea and cats. We should be back on Thursday to bring you an interview with Michael Drout. But until then, enjoy Tolkien's "Mythopoeia," read by Anika Smith in Season One! We'll have a conversation with Jordan Duncan on "Religion and Rocketry" pretty soon as well, but I wasn't able to complete it quite in time for Tuesday this week. Here's the old description for "Mythopoeia": This week, we have J.R.R. Tolkien's "Mythopoeia," read by Anika Smith! You can find the text of the poem online if you want to read along, or you can buy this lovely book. Music in the background is Lohengrin, by Richard Wagner. Next week, we'll be back to discuss Tolkien's essay "On Fairy Stories," in which a part of "Mythopoeia" is quoted. If you're enjoying these podcasts, please share with a friend or drop us a line to tell us so (InklingsVarietyHour@gmail.com).  Constructive feedback and suggestions for future episodes are welcome.  We'd also very much appreciate reviews in iTunes, if you can spare the time.

Reno discusses the theological implications between language and story and how this view ties to the recovery of Christian classical education. Philology is the foundation of the humane letters and there is more to learning than the seeking and the mining of literature in an academic way. This “lifeless” and “dull”  style of the university in Tolkien's Valedictory Address to the University of Oxford, points to a larger anthropological view of education. This leads us to think of education as a living, breathing, and whole that is multi-faceted and varied. In this world of machines, we need to recover the fullness of human life. Key Text: We discussed at great length from The Valedictory Address to the University of Oxford refers to J.R.R. It is isn't always easy for people to understand how a Catholic trade school works, especially when you consider that the school combines skilled trades training with intellectual and spiritual formation. And frankly, it is not always easy to explain. So today, we're going to attempt to show you instead of tell you, if only in a small way. In today's episode, we'd like to give you a little glimpse of what it sounds like to study the humanities in the context of the skilled trades. We're going to do that by publishing part of a lecture from one of our humanities classes, God and Man at Work. In this lecture, you'll hear a talk that helps make a turn from the first part of this class (where students study the Theology of the Body) to the second part, where they begin laying a foundation for a Theology of Work. This lecture is about J.R.R. Tolkien's poem, Mythopoeia. If you're like our students, you'll wonder how a poem on mythmaking can help lay the groundwork for a spiritual understanding of work. But argued in this talk, our work is actually part of a very fundamental way of existing in the world, a way of existing that might be best understand by approaching it from the side—in this case, through considering what a poet does. This is just a little glimpse of how Harmel works, a sample of the discussions we have here, and we hope you enjoy it. If you know anyone who might be interested in our work—students, donors, partners, priests—would you please send them our way? You can find us on the socials, or at HarmelAcademy.org

Mythopoeia is a noun that refers to a creation of myth. Our word of the day combines two Greek words ‘myth,' which translates into our contemporary English word myth, and poiein (PEEN) meaning ‘make.' From the 1950s on, the word mythopoeia has referred to the process of making a myth. There's always been a great deal of mythopoeia in the sports world. Turning sports stars into legends has always been as popular as reporting the facts.

My generation's obsessions, mysticism and social action, both make their appearance, with mysticism largely dominating. Until I conceived of the Covenants Initiative in 2013 (in partnership with Dr. John Andrew Morrow), social action with any humane end in sight seemed less and less possible to me. From 1966 to the present, the phases (often simultaneous) were: Poetry; Counterculture; Blake, Jung and Mythopoeia; Liberation Theology (tour of duty); the New Age (tour of duty); Perennialism and Organic Greens, Vitamin D, PreBiotics, ProBiotics, Digestive Enzymes all in one! What every healthy body needs! Metaphysics; Sufism; and the Covenants Initiative; most of these were shared by my wife, Jennifer Doane Upton. I took the Art course, the Psychology course, the Psychic Powers (and weaknesses) course, the Social Criticism and Action course, the Comparative Religion and Metaphysics course, and the Tariqa course ~ this last being the only course that never really ends. I am now in the process of synthesizing them. This is what my writing is about. My books and articles divide into four general categories ~ though a number of them could be classed in more than one category, and the first of the categories, “Metaphysics and Spiritual Lore”, actually embraces everything. The published works are available to buy on Amazon (links included on each book page); the unpublished works links are to pdf files. More unpublished works will undoubtedly appear in the future.

Teju 300 lapušu biezajā monogrāfijā „Mythopoeia” pētnieks Ingus Barovskis aplūko mītrades dažādās izpausmes, sekojot mītstāstu veidošanās principiem gan no vispārējās politikas, gan personisko izvēļu prizmas.

QUOTES FOR REFLECTION “Though now long estranged, Man is not wholly lost nor wholly changed, Disgraced he may be, yet is not dethroned, And keeps the rags of lordship once he owned.” ~J.R.R. Tolkein, Mythopoeia, a poem written for C.S. Lewis “Here is what we need to discover about power: it is both better and worse than we could imagine.” “Power is nothing—worse than nothing—without love.” ~Andy Crouch in Playing God: Redeeming the Gift of Power “When…freedoms are separated from…[truth], they become a force of destruction leading to chaos. When this happens…then, to quote Eric Hoffer…, ‘When freedom destroys order, the yearning for order will destroy freedom.'” “At this point the words left or right will make no difference. They are only two roads to the same end. There is no difference between an authoritarian government from the right or the left: the results are the same.” ~Francis Schaeffer (1912-1984), theologian, philosopher, and pastor “There has been a deepening recognition among elites in the West that as you begin to lose the power to control people by force, you have to start to control what they think. And in the United States, that recognition has reached its apogee.” ~Noam Chomsky, MIT professor, social critic and activist “The simple step of a courageous individual is not to take part in the lie. ‘One word of truth outweighs the world.'” ~Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (1918-2008), novelist and Soviet dissident “I freed thousands of slaves, but I would have freed hundreds more had they known they were slaves.” ~Harriet Tubman (1822-1913), key leader of the Underground Railroad SERMON PASSAGE Psalm 72 (ESV) 1 Give the king your justice, O God, and your righteousness to the royal son! 2 May he judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice! 3 Let the mountains bear prosperity for the people, and the hills, in righteousness! 4 May he defend the cause of the poor of the people, give deliverance to the children of the needy, and crush the oppressor! 5 May they fear you while the sun endures, and as long as the moon, throughout all generations! 6 May he be like rain that falls on the mown grass, like showers that water the earth! 7 In his days may the righteous flourish, and peace abound, till the moon be no more! 8 May he have dominion from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth! 9 May desert tribes bow down before him, and his enemies lick the dust! 10 May the kings of Tarshish and of the coastlands render him tribute; may the kings of Sheba and Seba bring gifts! 11 May all kings fall down before him, all nations serve him! 12 For he delivers the needy when he calls, the poor and him who has no helper. 13 He has pity on the weak and the needy, and saves the lives of the needy. 14 From oppression and violence he redeems their life, and precious is their blood in his sight. 15 Long may he live; may gold of Sheba be given to him! May prayer be made for him continually, and blessings invoked for him all the day! 16 May there be abundance of grain in the land; on the tops of the mountains may it wave; may its fruit be like Lebanon; and may people blossom in the cities like the grass of the field! 17 May his name endure forever, his fame continue as long as the sun! May people be blessed in him, all nations call him blessed! 18 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who alone does wondrous things. 19 Blessed be his glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory! Amen and Amen! 20 The prayers of David, the son of Jesse, are ended.

QUOTES FOR REFLECTION “We are glorious ruins…glorious because we were created by God for the noble purpose of being His image bearers; yet ruins because sin has marred the divine image we were designed to display, at times beyond recognition.” ~Francis Schaeffer (1912-1984), author and founder of L'Abri in Switzerland Though now long estranged, Man is not wholly lost nor wholly changed, Disgraced he may be, yet is not dethroned, And keeps the rags of lordship once he owned. ~J.R.R. Tolkein, Mythopoeia, a poem written for C.S. Lewis “Push back against the age as hard as it pushes against you. What people don't realize is how much religion costs. They think faith is a big electric blanket, when of course it is the cross.” ~Flannery O'Connor (1925-1964), novelist and essayist “Let it be understood that those who are not found living as Christ taught are not Christians, even though they profess with the lips the teachings of Christ.” ~Justin Martyr (c.100-c.165), Christian philosopher and apologist “Christians have, through their hope in God's story of redemption…, a deep consolation that enables them to work with all their being and never be ultimately discouraged by the frustrating present reality of this world…. We accept…that in this world our work will always fall short, just as we sinners always ‘fall short of the glory of God' because we know that our work in this life is not the final word.” ~Tim Keller & Katherine Leary Alsdorf, in Every Good Endeavor “Here then is the paradox of our humanness; our dignity and our depravity. We are capable both of the loftiest nobility and of the basest cruelty. One moment we can behave like God, in whose image we are made, and the next like the beasts, from whom we are meant to be completely distinct. We are inventors of hospitals to care for the sick, universities for the acquisition of wisdom, parliaments for the rule of the people and churches for the worship of God. But we are also the inventors of torture chambers and concentrations camps. Strange, bewildering paradox – noble and ignoble, rational and irrational, moral and immoral, Godlike and bestial.” ~John Stott (1921-2011), theologian and noted worldwide Christian leader SERMON PASSAGE Psalm 72 (ESV) 1 Give the king your justice, O God, and your righteousness to the royal son! QUOTES FOR REFLECTION “Universities, the traditional refuge of timelessness, nowadays look for big names, and enlarge their public relations and press relations departments to make the university itself a celebrity, known for its well-knownness.” ~Daniel J. Boorstin (1914-2004), historian and 12th Librarian of Congress “Jesus Christ goes to the cross and dies as the perfect fulfiller of the law because the law was burdensome and we could not fulfill it. But on the other side of the cross, the redeemed of Christ say that the law no longer hangs over us, but is instead underneath us as the path. It's the narrow path, actually, that Jesus speaks of in the Sermon on the Mount. It points us to what pleases God…. So, the law is a delight to us because it yields in us the fruit of righteousness and it forms us into the image of Christ—who was the perfect fulfillment of the law.” ~Jen Wilkin, writer and speaker “God's law is our pleasure when the God of the law is our God.” ~C.H. Spurgeon (1834-1892), famed London preacher “We are glorious ruins…glorious because we were created by God for the noble purpose of being His image bearers; yet ruins because sin has marred the divine image we were designed to display, at times beyond recognition.” ~Francis Schaeffer (1912-1984), author and founder of L'Abri in Switzerland “Though now long estranged, Man is not wholly lost nor wholly changed, Disgraced he may be, yet is not dethroned, And keeps the rags of lordship once he owned.” ~J.R.R. Tolkein, “Mythopoeia,” a poem written for C.S. Lewis “That every human being possessed an equal dignity was not remotely a self-evident truth. A Roman would have laughed at it. To campaign against discrimination…however, was to depend on large numbers of people sharing in a common assumption: that everyone possessed an inherent worth. The origins of this principle…lay not in the French Revolution, nor in the Declaration of Independence, nor in the Enlightenment, but in the Bible.” ~Tom Holland, English author and historian SERMON PASSAGE John 5:30-47 (ESV) John 1 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.'”) 16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known. John 5 16 And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” 18 This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. 19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. 22 For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. 25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. 30 “I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me. 31 If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true. 32 There is another who bears witness about me, and I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. 33 You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. 34 Not that the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. 36 But the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me. 37 And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen, 38 and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. 39 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. 41 I do not receive glory from people. 42 But I know that you do not have the love of God within you. 43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44 How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”

Today on The Literary Life Podcast, Angelina Stanford and Cindy Rollins are having a conversation about why everyone ought to read myths. Angelina begins by explaining what a myth is in terms of literary genre. She talks about the characteristics that run through myths, such as explanations of origins and natural phenomena, common characters, and a universe that hangs together. Cindy poses a question about why we have come to interpret the word myth to mean something untrue since the time of the Enlightenment. Angelina helps parents feel more confident about their children’s ability to know the difference between reality and fantasy. Cindy talks about how knowing mythology is a key to understanding other stories and literature. Unfolding a portion of church history, Angelina explains how early Christians wrestled with pagan stories and Old Testament stories at the same time. When we go looking only for morality tales in the Bible, Cindy points out, then we miss the main idea. Getting a bit more practical, Angelina gives some examples of the role of pre-Christian storytellers who pointed to the Truth. Be sure to be back next week for the beginning of our series on Til We Have Faces by C. S. Lewis, in which we will be covering chapters 1 and 2. (Amazon affiliate links are used in this content.) Commonplace Quotes: The imagination of man is made in the image of the imagination of God. Everything of man must have been of God first; and it will help much towards our understanding of the imagination and its functions in man if we first succeed in regarding aright the imagination of God, in which the imagination of man lives and moves and has its being. George MacDonald Those who do not know that this great myth became fact when the Virgin conceived are, indeed, to be pitied. But Christians also need to be reminded–we may thank Corineus for reminding us–that what became fact was a myth, that it carries with it into the world of fact all the properties of a myth. God is more than a god, not less; Christ is more than Balder, not less. We must not be ashamed of the mythical radiance resting on our theology. We must not be nervous about “parallels” and “pagan Christs”: they ought to be there–it would be a stumbling block if they weren’t. We must not, in false spirituality, withhold our imaginative welcome. If God chooses to be mythopoeic–and is not the sky itself a myth–shall we refuse to be mythopathic? For this is the marriage of heaven and earth: perfect myth and perfect fact: claiming not only our love and our obedience, but also our wonder and delight, addressed to the savage, the child, and the poet in each one of us no less than to the moralist, the scholar, and the philosopher. C. S. Lewis from “Mythopoeia” by J. R. R. Tolkien The heart of Man is not compound of lies, but draws some wisdom from the only Wise, and still recalls him. Though now long estranged, Man is not wholly lost nor wholly changed. Dis-graced he may be, yet is not dethroned, and keeps the rags of lordship once he owned, his world-dominion by creative act: not his to worship the great Artefact, Man, Sub-creator, the refracted light through whom is splintered from a single White to many hues, and endlessly combined in living shapes that move from mind to mind. Though all the crannies of the world we filled with Elves and Goblins, though we dared to build Gods and their houses out of dark and light, and sowed the seed of dragons, ’twas our right (used or misused). The right has not decayed. We make still by the law in which we’re made. Book List: A Dish of Orts by George MacDonald “Myth Became Fact” by C. S. Tea with Tolkien

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 7, 2020

This week, we’re talking about Tolkien’s essay “On Fairy Stories”, looking at Tolkien’s term Eucatastrophe, and how Tolkien calls the Gospels the Greatest Fairy-Story.I wanted to begin with a little bit on Tolkien’s essay, On Fairy-Stories. Now this is in no way comprehensive because it’s really quite a long essay, but I still wanted to give you all an intro. Written in 1939, this essay was presented by Tolkien as the as the Andrew Lang lecture at the University of St Andrews, in Scotland. For a bit of context, Andrew Lang was a Scottish poet, novelist, literary critic, and anthropologist with a love for folk and fairy tales. Tolkien’s essay was a response to Lang’s work as a folklorist and collector of fairy tales but it really grew into something much more.On The Tolkien Estate’s website you can find an essay written by Verlyn Flieger, where she discusses On Fairy -Stories. “If it were nothing else, “On Fairy-stories” would have a primary place in Tolkien scholarship as Tolkien’s definitive statement about his art — which he called “Sub-creation” — and the concept that lies behind it — the power of words to create a Secondary World. However, “On Fairy-stories” has a good deal more to offer, and to a wider audience, than a simple artistic declaration, however important, to a fellowship of scholars. It is also a wide-ranging discussion aimed at anyone interested in the subject of fairy tales…”“And finally and above all, it is essential reading for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the multivalent myth, epic and fairy tale romance that is The Lord of the Rings.” Verlyn FliegerTolkien addresses three questions primarily: What are fairy stories? What are their origins? And what is the use of them? It is also in On Fairy-Stories that we first see the word Eucatastrophe, a term coined by Tolkien himself, which we’ll talk about in a bit. So if you weren’t sure if it was an essay worth reading, I hope by now you’re convinced! You can find On Fairy Stories in a few different places. First, there are a few free PDFs floating around the internet and I’m linking to one of them in the show notes. If you’d like to purchase a copy or perhaps find one at your local library, you can find it included in “Tree and Leaf” or “The Monsters and the Critics”. Both are linked at the bottom of this post.I wanted to read the first few lines of the essay because I think they set the tone quite well for the rest of the essay, as well as my own Tolkien studies. “I propose to speak about fairy-stories, though I am aware that this is a rash adventure. Faerie is a perilous land, and in it are pitfalls for the unwary and dungeons for the overbold. And overbold I may be accounted, for though I have been a lover of fairy-stories since I learned to read, and have at times thought about them, I have not studied them professionally. I have been hardly more than a wandering explorer (or trespasser) in the land, full of wonder but not of information.”- JRR Tolkien, On Fairy StoriesIf you’ve been listening to our podcast for a while, I think I read this quote in our very first episode because it reflects my own feelings toward reading and studying Tolkien -- I am a lover of Tolkien’s works, although I haven’t studied them professionally (yet). So after just a super brief introduction to On Fairy Stories, I wanted to discuss a question that’s come up a lot over the years, moreso in my experience in Evangelical circles but it’s also something I’ve heard Catholics wrestle with: Should Christians read fairy tales? To put it plainly, the answer is yes. In “On Fairy Stories”, Tolkien offers such a beautiful explanation that I wanted to share it with you all. Towards the end of the essay, Tolkien introduces the word ‘Eucatastrophe’, a term of his own invention. In letter 89 to his son Christopher, Tolkien refers to the essay:“And all of the sudden I realized what it was: the very thing that I have been trying to write about and explain - in that fairy-story essay that I so much wish you had read that I think I shall send it to you. For it I coined the word ‘eucatastrophe’: the sudden happy turn in a story which pierces you with a joy that brings tears (which I argued in is the highest function of fairy-stories to produces). And I was there led to the view that it produces its peculiar effect because it is a sudden glimpse of Truth, your whole nature chained in material cause and effect, the chain of death, feels a sudden relief as if a major limb out of join had suddenly snapped back. It perceives -- if the story has literary ‘truth’ on the second plane (for which see the essay) -- that this is indeed how things really do work in the Great World for which our nature is made. And I concluded by saying that the Resurrection was the greatest ‘eucatastrophe’ possible in the greatest Fairy Story -- and produces that essential emotion: Christian joy which produces tears because it is qualitatively so like sorrow, because it comes from those places where Joy and Sorrow are at one, reconciled, as selfishness and altruism are lost in Love. Of course I do not mean that the Gospels tell what is only a fairy-story; but I do mean very strongly that they do tell a fairy-story: the greatest. Man the story-teller would have to be redeemed in a manner consonant with his nature: by a moving story. But since the author of it is the supreme Artist and the Author of Reality, this one was also made to Be, to be true on the Primary Plane…” JRR Tolkien, Letter 89But not all fairy-tales are created equal, and not all fantastical stories are fairy-tales, at least Tolkien would argue this. “Far more important is the Consolation of the Happy Ending. Almost I would venture to assert that all complete fairy-stories must have it. At least I would say that Tragedy is the true form of Drama, its highest function; but the opposite is true of Fairy-story. Since we do not appear to possess a word that expresses this opposite--I will call it Eucatastrophe. The eucatastrophic tale is the true form of fairy-tale, and its highest function.” “It is the mark of a good fairy-story, of the higher or more complete kind, that however wild its events, however fantastic or terrible the adventures, it can give to child or man that hears it, when the “turn” comes,a catch of the breath, a beat and lifting of the heart, near to (or accompanied by) tears, as keen as that given by any form of literary art, and having a peculiar quality.” - JRR Tolkien, On Fairy StoriesStories that produce this form of Joy are good for our souls; all small eucatastrophes of the Secondary World will, in the end, point us to, or offer us glimpses of, the Great Eucatastrophe. In his poem Mythopoeia, Tolkien puts forth the argument that myths are not lies as C.S. Lewis once argued, but that they reflect in some way the True Myth, which is the story of Christ. Joseph Pearce elaborates on this idea in an article entitled, J.R.R. Tolkien: Truth and Myth: “Building on this philosophy of myth, Tolkien explained to Lewis that the story of Christ was the true myth at the very heart of history and at the very root of reality. Whereas the pagan myths were manifestations of God expressing Himself through the minds of poets, using the images of their "mythopoeia" to reveal fragments of His eternal truth, the true myth of Christ was a manifestation of God expressing Himself through Himself, with Himself, and in Himself. God, in the Incarnation, had revealed Himself as the ultimate poet who was creating reality, the true poem or true myth, in His own image. Thus, in a divinely inspired paradox, myth was revealed as the ultimate realism.” - Joseph Pearce, J.R.R. Tolkien: Truth and MythTolkien calls the Gospels a fairy-story, a myth, but not just any fairy-story, not just any myth — the Greatest Fairy Story, the True Myth. The truth of Christianity, to Tolkien, is at the very root of reality, and these higher or complete fairy-stories and myths Tolkien refers to reveal slivers of it, some more, some less. He reflects back on how God provided him with everything he wanted and dreamed and that made him realize these physical and earthly things do not fulfill you. He walks us through the struggle of seeking perfection and success in your chosen work. David and Tray discuss the heart of men and how deep rooted you seek validation. David is 29 years old and is married to his wife Hannah. David and Hannah live in Indiana with their 8 month old son, Boaz. Cedarlore Forge is the sole work of artist and craftsman David DelaGardelle. David crafts mythopoetically and historically inspired one-of-a-kind fully functional swords and fine art. Cedarlore Forge is David's serious artistic exploration of the Northern European mythopoetic tradition, in the form of uniquely hand forged swords and artwork. He attempts to embody the ideology that Professor J.R.R. Tolkien spoke of in his poem "Mythopoeia" when he wrote of the creation of art as a transcendent truth that can glorify and praise our own Creator. David crafts each piece with meaning and purpose, a mythic story to tell, and a truth to be known. He works with the raw materials as closely as they would have been used thousands of years ago by historical swordsmiths. Also, he is inspired by both the classical and legendary works of old writers and folktales. The natural environments of his childhood shaped his imagination into the craftsman he is today.
