In other news, Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI is suing Apple and OpenAI, as reported by Reuters. The suit accuses the companies of illegally conspiring to stop rival AI companies from getting a fair shot on the App Store, alleging they have "locked up markets to maintain their monopolies and prevent innovators like X and xAI from competing." And, the 100,000-square-foot amusement centers will be centered around all things Netflix and will include a retail component, a restaurant called Netflix Bites and numerous "immersive story-driven experiences" based on the company's most successful properties. The Netflix House in Philadelphia will open November 12 at the King of Prussia Mall, and the Dallas location will open December 11 at Galleria Texas. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of Overlapping Dialogue, we take a look at two well-crafted antiques of cinematic yesteryear, one being a genuine article of the past and another as a vibrant reinvention of a dead artform, with 1939's The Four Feathers and 2015's The Forbidden Room. But before we dig into our double feature, we recognize there's no time like the present to indulge in a Blue Plate Special slate that celebrates the life and legacy of Donald Sutherland, speculates on what exactly the prospects of the "experiential attractions" Netflix House intends to offer, catches up on X and Pearl ahead of the trilogy-capping MaXXXine's release, warms up the half-baked yet edible tastes of Unfrosted, and takes comfort in the subtle pleasures of the newly released The Bikeriders. After ascending to hog heaven, we delight in our retro double feature: listen as we place Zoltan Korda's film into the larger canon of British adventure stories and marvel at Guy Maddin and Evan Johnson's truly transformational experiment in the lost craft, beauty, and perversity of silent cinema. This was a week of highs, lows, and questions marks. First, Carl and Eitan marvel at the enormous power of Inside Out and its incredible box office run (which doesn't seem to be ending anytime soon), and what it could mean for their prediction of Disney making exactly $3.75B at the box office this year. They later try to come up with some crazy accounting that could help explain a report about MoviePass having a profitable year last year. Towards the end of the episode they close by breaking down the latest Netflix marketing stunts: "Houses" and popcorn.

In this episode, we explored several fascinating stories from the worlds of tech, entertainment, and archaeology. First, we looked at Anthropic's new AI model Claude 3.5 Sonnet, which raises the bar for AI capabilities in areas like reasoning, knowledge, and coding. We also discussed the controversy around the canceled premiere of the AI-scripted film "The Last Screenwriter" and Netflix's surprising plans to open immersive physical retail stores called "Netflix House." Additionally, we covered California's proposed crackdown on smartphone usage in schools to address student mental health concerns. The highlight was the remarkable discovery of the world's oldest known wine, found preserved in an ancient Roman burial site in Spain. Dating back around 2,000 years, this white wine offers insights into the symbolic role of wine in Roman funerary rituals and burial practices. Its exceptional state of preservation allowed scientists to analyze the mineral composition, revealing similarities to modern sherry wines from the region. This incredible archaeological find reminds us that the past still holds secrets waiting to be uncovered.Citations:[1] https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/aws/amazon-bedrock-anthropic-ai-claude-3-5-sonnet[2] https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/worlds-oldest-wine-discovered-southern-spain-rcna157894[3] https://sg.news.yahoo.com/premiere-first-movie-written-ai-184255136.html[4] https://www.theverge.com/2024/6/20/24181961/anthropic-claude-35-sonnet-model-ai-launch?showComments=1[5] https://www.pymnts.com/artificial-intelligence-2/2024/anthropic-debuts-new-ai-model-claude-3-5-sonnet-that-understands-humor/[6] https://www.zdnet.com/article/anthropic-launches-claude-3-5-sonnet-and-debuts-artifacts-for-collaboration/[7] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHaYGq0yuMM[8] https://www.theverge.com/2024/6/19/24181719/california-governor-gavin-newsom-smartphone-school-legislation[9] https://www.npr.org/2023/10/14/1205971022/netflix-house-brick-and-mortar-locations[10] https://www.theguardian.com/film/article/2024/jun/20/premiere-movie-ai-generated-script-cancelled-backlash-the-last-screenwriter-prince-charles-cinema[11] https://variety.com/2023/digital/news/netflix-permanent-store-restaurant-launch-2025-1235756145/[12] https://www.thedailybeast.com/the-last-screenwriter-premiere-of-first-movie-written-by-ai-is-axed-after-backlash[13] https://collider.com/netflix-physical-retail-stores/[14] https://www.anthropic.com/news/claude-3-5-sonnet[15] https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-10-12/netflix-to-open-stores-where-fans-can-play-shop-and-eat-in-2025Perplexity is the fastest and most powerful way to search the web.
