Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Jonathan Graubart, professor of political science at San Diego State University, to discuss his recent book Jewish Self-Determination beyond Zionism: Lessons from Hannah Arendt and other Pariahs. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the growing death toll in Gaza, Israel's turn towards Indonesian Hospital in Gaza, potential conditions on US aid to Israel, Biden's cratering poll numbers, North Dakota's violation of the Voting Rights Act, and flight attendant labor action, before parsing through the election of Javier Milei to the presidency of Argentina. Next, they're joined by Jonathan Graubart as dives right into his work exploring the competing visions for Jewish self-determination outside of the extremist revisionist Zionism that dominates the conversation today. After touching on the pushback to his work, as well as the inspiration behind it, Graubart dives into the contrasting strains of Martin Buber's vision of “cultural Zionism” – one that emphasized a non-statist revival of the Jewish community in the holy lands of Palestine – the mainstream, statist Zionism of Theodor Herzl, and the vitriolic revisionist Zionism of Ze'ev Jabotinsky (a legacy carried by Netanyahu), all of which were prevalent at the start of the 20th Century. Professor Graubart explores the central influence of European imperialism on Buber's explicit rejection of Jewish nationalism in favor of a broader independent, spiritual, and socialist egalitarianism, before stepping into the practical application of Buber's Zionism with the creation of various multi-faith and multi-cultural federations in the 1920s and ‘30s, alongside increasing pleas to his opponents in the Zionist community to embrace the presence of Palestinians as neighbors and community members. After briefly walking through the political leverage behind the various Zionist movements – and the particular role the British played in bolstering the plan for an exclusionary Jewish state – Graubart dives into the critiques of Zionism leveled by Hannah Arendt, contrasting Buber's affirmative vision of Hebrew Humanism he hoped to create with her pathologizing of a Zionist movement that had once inspired her, as she explore the influence of “Eternal Anti-semitism Syndrome” (the belief that everyone, everywhere is against the Jews, at all times) and Tribal Nationalism in completely undermining the cultivation of Jewish culture, Jewish community, Jewish safety, and Jewish self-determination. Expanding on this, Professor Graubart explores the concept of “self-determination” itself, and the contradictory relationship between self-determination for a community that is moving into a region, and the continued autonomy of the pre-existing community. After parsing through the eventual breakdown of Buber's Humanist Zionism amid increasing power and violence exercised by the Zionist right, as well as Palestinian resistance to a bi-national solution (while supporting the presence of Jews as community members with equal rights), and the role of the 1948 Nakba in officially destroying the unique possibilities of a productive Zionism, Sam, Emma, and Jonathan wrap up with a tentative discussion on the future of any solution to this conflict. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Anderson Cooper let active rhetoric of genocide go unchecked, Biden's torpedoing approval ratings, and the expansion of the cleansing of Gaza to regional conflict. They also discuss the inequality of marriage for disabled Americans, Francisco from Buenos Aires reflects on his country's election of Javier Milei and the historical context, Chris Christie has an embarrassing appearance on Meet the Press, Rep. Clay Higgins perfectly shows the insanity of the GOP, and Russell Brand perfectly shows the insanity of both himself and Alex Jones, plus, your calls and IMs! Well, well, well...It seems Mark and jason have been working hard and the show is showing the fruits of it's labor. People in other places wanna hear the show on their networks and we are happy to oblige. Jason Kull and Mark Bland start off discussing about Covid and how people are worried about new lockdowns that just not coming. A Maryland school had a small outbreak of third graders and as usual the idiots took to social media to turn it into the next OUTBREAK scenario and it never comes to fruition. This is all after the men announce they are now SYNDICATED for the second time in history on multiple stations. Sure it's not national synidcation, but the show is moving in the right direction adding 102.5 WIBH to their already powerful 1280/105.3 KYRO!  Next up the gents discuss the Gerogia Election Fraud Case. The first set of hearings has already begun and it seems the republicans are trying to get out in front of what they are denying is a conspiracy. There is only one problem Mark noticed...they referenced the "conspiracy" underoath in the first discussion, so it was actually a conspiracy. Trump has argued for years that it was never some conspiracy and everyone just over reacted and was lying and/or LIBERAL. Weird stance to take. This also comes with some idiocy from the lawyers of Sidney Powell and Mr. Chesebro.  Fianlly it's time for another tournament of pop culture so people can get a taste at the new station of the types of fun we bring to the table. This tournament focuses on the upcoming halloween and fall season as we break down the best Horror Movie Sequels Battle Royale. This is not a list we created, but one that we are breaking down and discussing. Which horror movie franchise made the best sequel to date? Was it Halloween and Michael? How bout Freddy and Nightmare on Elm Street. Well join us and help us break these movies down and figure out who the big winner is!

The crisis of Western capitalism has led to the election of an ultra-right party in Sweden, with historical connection to the Nazi movement. The drive for escalation with Russia prompted Finland and Sweden to join NATO, placing themselves on the frontlines of a war in which they have nothing to gain. While it may appear that NATO is all about countering Russia, the U.S. is in the process of reconfiguring it into an anti-China military alliance, which would cause even more economic devastation to the EU. To discuss this and more, Rania Khalek was joined by writer and journalist Lily Lynch. Lily's articles discussed in this episode:Sweden's Pariahs https://newleftreview.org/sidecar/posts/293 Looking East https://newleftreview.org/sidecar/posts/287 Useful Spectres https://newleftreview.org/sidecar/posts/280 Joining the West https://newleftreview.org/sidecar/posts/joining-the-west?pc=1442

The Post-Cancellation Pivot: Stephen Elliott's Financial Advice for Poets (and Moral Support for Pariahs)

Writer Stephen Elliott was once a bonafide member of the independent literary scene. In 2009 he founded the literary site The Rumpus, which helped launch the careers of writers like Roxane Gay and Cheryl Strayed. His eight books include the memoir The Adderall Diaries and the novel Happy Baby, which draws from his experiences in the child welfare system as a teenager and his subsequent involvement in the BDSM community. Both of those books were adapted into films, one of which he directed. He also wrote and directed the film “After Cherry” and made a web series. In 2017, Stephen was among more than 70 men whose names appeared on the so-called “Shitty Media Men List," an anonymously sourced Google document that accused the men of various levels of sexual misconduct. Stephen was among those accused of rape. He eventually decided to sue the list's creator because, he says, he was in the “unique position of knowing not only that I didn't rape anyone, but that there was no one out in the world who believed I had raped them.” In this conversation, Stephen explained what he means by that and what he hopes to accomplish with the lawsuit. But the interview is not really about the lawsuit or the list. It's about Meghan's favorite subject, the mid-career pivot, and how Stephen put his life back together after being about as cancelled as it's possible to be. They talked about how Stephen managed to become a real estate investor with very little startup money and about his “Self Help” newsletter, which he's dubbed “financial advice for poets.” Stephen shared his belief that literary writers are especially likely to participate in social media mobs and also offered his biggest piece of advice for anyone: buy a house. This interview was originally recorded on video for the podcast's Unspeakeasy video series. A partial version can be seen on the Unspeakable YouTube channel. The full version is available to Patreon supporters of the podcast at Patrreon.com/theunspeakable. Guest Bio: Stephen Elliott is the author of The Adderall Diaries and the novel Happy Baby, which draws from his experiences in the child welfare system as a teenager and his subsequent involvement in the BDSM community. With the Northern republics out, the rest of Yugoslavia had to focus on other things - like trying to retain the European Cup, trying to figure out what to do when half the teams in your league just leave and getting to Euro 92. But everything would be taken out of their hands as the future would be changed in New York...

Historically, the separation of a group of people like the Jews in World War II, begins with delegitimization, then marginalization, followed by the onslaught of the lies that are repeated so frequently that we begin to believe them. The idea of marginalizing people groups is not new and goes back over centuries. Now, in the USA, we are in a place of marginalizing those who do not go along with the protocols.I had begun this sermon earlier in the year and put it on the shelf to observe the course our culture would follow with vaccines and passports.  Here is my continuation of this sermon and insight into how the world events are unfolding in specific alignment with prophecies from the Bible. We are watching the unfolding of what could lead to a one-world govt and a system of political and economic tyranny that we see predicted, but we don't think it can happen “here” and “now."Stay alert and as always, look UP for the hope behind the headlines! Support the show (https://www.mylesandkatharineweiss.org/donate/)

MC MytholOG - Midas, Medea, Jonah* et al.

In this episode our power couple hits some bumps in the road. Through Medea's magic cauldron sleight of hand, Jason and Medea ascend the throne that Pelias had previously promised and that was rightfully Jason's, but the townspeople drive them out because of the suspicious circumstances of their accession to the throne. Pariahs again, Jason and Medea approach Corinth where it appears their hard times may take a turn for the better, until Medea, who has risked everything for her beloved, learns of Jason's thoughtless plan to re-marry - a beautiful, nubile princess named Glauke - in order to secure some stabilty for their menage. Tune in to Medea Act IV, but strap yourselves in, for hell hath no fury...

His greatest asset might be his voice, which is front and center in a new avant-garde record, “Like a Puppet Show.” We talked with him during the album's national release at Music Millennium.Portland filmmaker Todd Haynes’ "Carol"One of Portland’s most famous directors, Todd Haynes, captured our attention with experimental classics “Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story” and “Poison” and held it with "Far From Heaven” and the HBO miniseries “Mildred Pierce.” His latest film, "Carol," about the love that dare not speak its name, stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. It’s racking up raves, including a best actress award for Mara at Cannes, and one of the most insightful reviews comes from critic David Edelstein for Fresh Air. It opens in Portland on Dec. 25.Dreamscapes in AstoriaDarren Orange of Astoria paints large, bold, abstract landscapes that are collected inside and outside Oregon. His moody treatments and strong color communicate coastal land and water with force and energy. He tells us about his latest exhibition, “Cascadian Slipstream,” which opens in downtown Astoria at 1198 Commercial St. on Dec. 12 and runs through Jan. 3. Drive-By Trucker Rolls Into PortlandOver the past couple of decades, Patterson Hood and his band, the Drive-By Truckers, have become standard-bearers for a unique strain of Southern rock – scorching and also super-thoughtful. Now, as the band releases a sprawling live album, Hood is spreading his wings. He turned heads with a recent essay in The New York Times Magazine about the Confederate flag and he recently relocated to Portland. Jerad Walker of opbmusic caught up with Patterson at Wordstock. Hood plays solo shows at the Doug Fir Lounge Dec. 9 and 16.A YA Sensation About Portland GentrificationAs a teenager in the 1990s, Renee Watson watched her friends and neighbors get priced out of Northeast Portland. Although she has since moved to New York, Watson’s new young adult novel, “This Side of Home,” is set in Portland and explores gentrification through the eyes of teenaged twins who come down on different sides of the issue. What’s The Most Expensive Book At Powell’s?Thousands wander through Powell’s City of Books in downtown Portland everyday, browsing through more than one million titles. As OPB’s John Rosman learned, there is one book that almost no one — including staff — is able to see. It’s locked away in a secret location and only taken out for serious buyers.Portland: The Center Of The Sneaker Universe? Portland has been called the Paris or Milan of sneakers, and that’s a big deal. “Sneakerheads,” who collect the shoes, have helped U.S. sales for Nike, Adidas and Under Armour sneakers soar 47 percent since 2009, and all three companies have major presences in Portland. OPB’s John Sepulvado hit the pavement to find out more about how sneaker fashion transforms Portland’s streets.Rapping Like The PopeThis week, Pope Francis set the Twitterverse on fire with a photo taken during his historic tour of Africa that looks like his Holiness is … well, rapping. Wags have been posting papal rhymes to Twitter with the hashtag #popebars. We asked Portland’s own Elton Cray, of Elton Cray and the Pariahs, to read some of the best ones for us. For example:“I murder these bars like Cain did to Abel /Better call me Charlie cause I'm surrounded by angels"

Here is the 15th installment of the Dreams of Consciousness podcast, featuring an interview with Tom Banks of the Vietnamese death metal band Disgusted. I met Tom in 2012 when Disgusted played Kuala Lumpur; having been in a band and lived in South East Asia for roughly the same period I've been writing about it for this blog, I wanted to get his perspective on the scene, and what it means to be a metal fan here. Especially important to me were his experiences in Vietnam, a scene that's little known and much overlooked, even in this region. I'd been planning on doing a second installment of South East Asian Metal Attack since the beginning of 2014, as there have been a number of important releases this year. Between my talk with Tom and the new stuff that's come out, it seemed like a good time to zoom out and look at South East Asia as a whole again. Besides, this is the era of sequels and reboots. My thanks to Tom for taking the time to talk to me, and to all the bands who sent me music.
