This mix and going forward in the 2-Step Series, I'm gonna show you where the name Smoove came from and why folk used to ask in the club:"Are you recording tonight"? This set is for the Grown Folk sippin' their favorite drink during Happy Hour and chillin' til the 9:45pm crowd comes before a Cover Charge is asked at the door. Remember, I was a Club Dj in the beginning. We gonna get back to that for a hot minute. Cool? If you dig what you hear, feel free to download it for free, and send it to your friends, family, and especially your Aunts, and Uncles that used to Hand Dance at every event they attended. This mix is Featuring: Deniece Williams, Bobby Caldwell, Robert Palmer, Michael McDonald, Surface, S.O.S. Band, Color Me Badd, Ideal, Stephanie Mills, Pattie LaBelle, Teddy Pendergrass, Kleer, Loose Ends, Maxwell, and everyone's favorite by Hi-Five. This is just a sample of what's to come during Winter. Stay Tuned Ladies and Gentlemen, and I hope you enjoy  the mix! Peace.  #ForGrownFolkOnly #HappyHourVibes

We are living in an era of unprecedented access to popular culture: contemporary digital infrastructure provides anyone with an internet connection access to a dizzying array of cultural objects past and present, which mingle and connect in fascinating, bizarre and sometimes troubling ways.  In Black Ephemera: The Crisis and Challenge of the Musical Archive (NYU Press, 2022), Mark Anthony Neal considers the opportunities and challenges that this vast archive represents for Black American culture, with a particular focus on music and sound. He suggests that despite the profusion of what he terms ‘Black big data' and the supposed democratisation of access this entails, the contemporary moment is characterised by a profound amnesia and an absence of attention to the dense web of connections that bind the analogue past with the digital present. Black Ephemera seeks to at once draw out and ‘mystify' these links, by attending to recordings, historical moments and archival projects which have often been neglected in other studies of Black music. Neal's explorations have a wide historical scope and operate simultaneously in microscopic and conjunctural registers. The book includes analyses of legendary Memphis record label Stax, the place of Aretha Franklin and Mavin Gaye's overlooked early recordings in/as the Great American Songbook, the use of musical citation to try and combat the erasure of Black women's experience from the historical archive, and the significance of archival ephemera to Black mourning practices from Pattie LaBelle to Kendrick Lamar. We cover a lot of music in this episode, and there's even more in the book! A good place to start might be with two mixes made in response to Black Ephemera, which you can listen to here and here. When we think of serial killers, the name Ronald Joseph Dominique doesn't necessarily come to mind. But while Dominique—who was later given the moniker "the Bayou Strangler"—never gained the notoriety of the Dahmers and Gacys of the world, his crimes were no less heinous. In fact, his body count makes him one of the most prolific killers in American history: 23 men died at Dominique's hands between 1997 and 2006.So how did a vindictive killer evade the police for nearly a decade? Dominique's success can be attributed to two factors: As a pizza delivery man, he maintained a low profile in his Louisiana town. No one suspected that Dominique—an overweight and balding 30-something—was capable of murder. Likewise, his victims—primarily gay African American men—lived on the fringes of society. With the promise of paid sex, Dominique would lure these men into his car before raping and then strangling them to death. Only years later, after DNA evidence linked him to the crimes, was he finally put behind bars. Not everyone can sing just any song. So many of us grew up imitating voices singing songs we heard from radio to record player. We felt that if we couldn't sound like the voice singing, no one would want to hear us sing. Either you had to sound like the singer of your favorite song or sound just as good or better using your voice. I never had a problem singing and one day I heard Whitney Houston. After hearing her, I tried singing some of her songs. I had a rough time with the Greatest Love of All because I could never sing that song all the way through. Singing the beginning of the song was okay.(Singing)But when she got a little louder and a little stronger (Singing) She was really singing out. I had no idea what Whitney was doing. Whenever I would try to sing out loud, it was stuck in my throat. (Singing). So whenever I got to "the greatest love of all” part, I would stop singing because I knew something wasn't right. My mom would say, “Gail! Why do you stop singing? You stop singing every time. You sound good at the beginning.” And I would say, “I don't know ma. I'm tired. I give out of breath. The song is too long.”And she'd say, “For one thing, you need to stand up and sing. You sit down too much. Standing up will help you sing out better.”I heard my mom, but I didn't think it made a difference. I would sit and stare at Whitney watching her video. And when she would get to the end reaching out for her mom, She would hold her voice a long time. (Singing) You know.I thought Whitney Houston ws tough. I thought that's a bad long winded woman. Bad as in good. I asked myself, “What is Whitney Houston doing? Why come I can't sing like that?”I use to play Whitney Houston song from a cassette tape. I'd turn the volume down and try to sing over Whitney Houston and loud. To me, boy did I sound bad. I didn't like my voice trying to sing like WH. My mom would say, “Gail! You're hearing Whitney! You're not hearing Gail! You've got to find how high and low you can go! You've got to find your voice!”And I thought to myself, “I'm going to find me alright through my own songs.” I just couldn't figure out what I use to call exclamatory singing. After Whitney Houston, I would hear a lot more people doing so much exclamatory singing. I would say, “Everybody wants to sing like Whitney Houston.”We already heard singers like Aretha Franklin and Pattie Labelle shout and sing. But looks like when the voice Whitney was heard, it was someone new and different showing us what was already started. It was just something about Whitney's voice. She was really singing, and she was taught well by her mom who was also a singer, Miss Cissy Houston.I'm Gail Nobles. This has been a Whitney Soul Podcast. Never forget the voice Whitney as you find your voice in you.
