“Many are called, but few are chosen” (Matthew 23:14). Lucinda Moore remains one of the most prolific voices of gospel music. A gospel singer, songwriter, and arranger with a big voice suited for leading large choirs -- Moore is a living witness of the anointing that transfers the power of God to those who first serve the purpose of God in the capacity that God gives them. A native of Bridgeport, Connecticut, Moore began singing in church in early childhood, and by her early teens was singing lead in local choirs. Her professional career began a few years later when she netted a position as backing vocalist for one of her influences, Tramaine Hawkins. Moore has performed with multiple gospel vocal groups, including appearances with the Gospel Music Workshop of America; she self-released her first solo recording, an EP titled Unlimited Praise; which led to a spot on the Tyscot Records roster, who issued her debut LP, Lucinda Moore (2006), which produced the chart topper "Turn Your Pressure Into Praise”; followed by Blessed, Broken & Given (2010) earning her a Stellar Award for Traditional Female Artist of the Year. Moore launched the Nalah Music Group with the release of Walking In My Favor (2017), and her latest Lord, I Hear You (June 2023). Oh, what a difference the anointing makes when it is allowed to flow! Ivan Hampden Jr. , Founder and President/CEO of Hamptown Music Institute, was born and raised in New York City, and grew up in Harlem's musically diverse neighborhoods to the rhythms of R&B, Salsa, Caribbean, Jazz, Blues, Pop, Funk and whatever else trickled in. This saturation of music inspired Hampden to start playing the drums at the age of eight, with the local Catholic school marching band. By age 13, he was playing in local clubs in and around New York City, with Blues musicians who helped instill in him a sense of timing and groove. The musical diversity of his early youth set the foundation for Hampden's future work with percussion and keyboards. Hampden started his formal training in 1973, studying at the Jazz Mobile with Charlie Percep, and at Mannes College of Music with Norman Grossman. He went on to attend Bronx Community College in 1977, where he received private lessons at the Metropolitan Opera with Richard Horowitz. During his first semester at Bronx Community College, a friend told him about the Dance Theatre of Harlem. Hampden had to be involved and joined the orchestra—a position he still holds today. While at the Dance Theatre of Harlem, Hampden was also a drum and percussion instructor at the Harlem School of the Arts, and at Seton Hall University in the Black Music Department. But his talent reached far beyond Harlem. Hampden has touched and enhanced the New York theater community as well, performing for various shows on Broadway, The Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, and many more.. Not only an accomplished drummer and percussionist, Hampden is also a producer and songwriter who collaborates with such artists as Luther Vandross, Nick Ashford, Chaka Khan, Eartha Kitt, and many others. Along with being Luther Vandross' drummer and co-writing partner for 17 years (which earned him recognition four(4)times from the Grammy Awards as a Musician, Arranger and Programmer on a number of Vandross's platinum recordings) until the time of the consummate musician's death , Hampden currently records and tours with other notable artists such as Stephanie Mills, Ashford & Simpson, Roberta Flack, Phil Perry, Vanessa Williams and Jennifer Lopez. In 2001, Hampden relocated to the south, where he continues to write and produce in between touring around the country and world. In fall 2007, Hampden signed on as an adjunct professor at North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina, teaching recording production I and II, and audio postproduction. In the Fall of 2010, Ivan also accepted an offer to teach Drums and Percussion at Johnston Community College. After 10 years of teaching as a music educator in North Carolina, He is now Founder and CEO of The Hamptown Music Institute in Clayton, North Carolina, where his mission is to “Develop the next generation of music industry professionals and Artists.” While continuing to be in demand as a music Producer, Ivan is also working with new local talent around the country. Live Performance credits: Bonnie Raitt, Al Jarreau, Dionne Warwick, Maceo Parker, El Debarge, Kenny Lattimore, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Michael MacDonald, India.Arie and Joe—the list goes on and on. New and accomplished talent alike seems to gravitate toward Hampden. Recording Credits: Hampden's recording resume includes such artists as Diana Ross, Akiko Yano, Ann Nesby, Doc Powell, Jocelyn Brown, Mavis Staples, The Temptations, Nestor Torres, Marcus Miller, Cathy Dennis, Howard Hewett, Luther Vandross, Beyonce Knowles, Ashford & Simpson, Sy Coleman, Tramaine Hawkins and Roberta Flack, just to name a few.Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa. This episode features a discussion with Lady Tramaine Hawkins about her album entitled "I Never Lost My Praise - Live (The Album)".
The episode starts with Psalm 139:7-12 which declares there is NO Place you can go where the Lord can’t go and find you. That is good news if you are feeling bad. To undo that feeling, we are going to offer a prayer of thanksgiving. Praise puts us in the right relationship with God. It brings us closer to Him. That will solve all of your problems. Music from Thank You - Walter Hawkins & The Love Center Choir This is from their 1990 album "Love Alive IV". Soloist: Yvette Flunder Guest Soloists: Rev. James Moore, Tramaine Hawkins, Frank Williams, and Thomas Whitfield. Speak Life Church ministry is a member of ASCAP for music use https://youtu.be/Jkz0Y4rUAlg Psalm 118 118 O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: because his mercy endureth for ever. 2 Let Israel now say, that his mercy endureth for ever. 3 Let the house of Aaron now say, that his mercy endureth for ever. 4 Let them now that fear the Lord say, that his mercy endureth for ever. 5 I called upon the Lord in distress: the Lord answered me, and set me in a large place. 6 The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me? 7 The Lord taketh my part with them that help me: therefore shall I see my desire upon them that hate me. 8 It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. 9 It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes. 10 All nations compassed me about: but in the name of the Lord will I destroy them. 11 They compassed me about; yea, they compassed me about: but in the name of the Lord I will destroy them. 12 They compassed me about like bees: they are quenched as the fire of thorns: for in the name of the Lord I will destroy them. 13 Thou hast thrust sore at me that I might fall: but the Lord helped me. 14 The Lord is my strength and song, and is become my salvation. 15 The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tabernacles of the righteous: the right hand of the Lord doeth valiantly. 16 The right hand of the Lord is exalted: the right hand of the Lord doeth valiantly. 17 I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. 18 The Lord hath chastened me sore: but he hath not given me over unto death. 19 Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and I will praise the Lord: 20 This gate of the Lord, into which the righteous shall enter. 21 I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation. 22 The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. 23 This is the Lord's doing; it is marvellous in our eyes. 24 This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. 25 Save now, I beseech thee, O Lord: O Lord, I beseech thee, send now prosperity. 26 Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the Lord: we have blessed you out of the house of the Lord. 27 God is the Lord, which hath shewed us light: bind the sacrifice with cords, even unto the horns of the altar. 28 Thou art my God, and I will praise thee: thou art my God, I will exalt thee. 29 O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. I never intended to release this mix. I considered it to be unfinished, in need of a polishing. Today, I heard it and it allowed me the space to breathe, to remember, to let go, so in that sense, it is perfect and I’m offering it AS IS. AS US. For Trayvon. Two years ago when Gil Scot Heron died I compiled and mixed music that spoke to the depth of joy and despair that filled his life, and ours as we witnessed his decline. Halfway through the mix I was confronted by the truth of Gil’s life—it represented the collective experience of the people who brave “Winter in America.” For centuries we’ve layered our bodies to survive, to endure this cold. And through activism, scholarship, art, meditation, movement, faith, we stand, sometimes shattered, but always fierce in our ability to release the pain through Gospel, Bluesy Soul, Slum Beautiful Funk. And to Marvin Gaye, Phyllis Hyman, Brenda Fassie, Whitney Houston, Don Cornelius, Vesta, Michael Jackson, Tammi Terrell, Billie Holiday, Donnie Hathaway and all the others who died on the front lines of black music, I call on you and the legacy of your voices and your fingertips, to offer us a way to move through it, beyond addiction, beyond depression. Thank you for speaking truth to power, and for providing the rhythm to accompany the resistance, the healing. This mix allows Shirley Ceasar, The Clark Sisters, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Tramaine Hawkins, Esther Phillips, Gil Scott Heron, Nina Simone and even Richard Pryor to help us better understand what it means to channel the anguish through art. Funk, Faith and Praise speaks to the historic tension between the secular and the spiritual realm in Black music, and the wear and tear on black bodies in a space that institutionalizes our dehumanization. And while sometimes our reactions are self-destructive, usually in an attempt to numb the pain, we stay singing and clapping, witnessing the lifeless bodies dance into the new world. Transcendence. I watched your face Sybrina Fulton. Black mama. Fierce. Angry and Graceful. I thank you for your demonstration of dignity. And for you Tracy Martin, Black Father, I felt the knowing in your weeping eyes. Because of your family and this experience my belief is that we will love each other through this, more fiercely than ever, more clearly. In the loving, gracious and tender words of Adrienne Maree Brown, “Keep going Trayvon, don't look back here, nothing here for you but our stranger's/familiar's love twisted tonight to a grief. Go on home, this place doesn't know how to love you. Axe.” Adrienne’s words held me close last night. Shortly after learning about the verdict, I was fortunate enough to see her message, right before I hit that point of feeling utterly powerless. Through her words I found a way to live between the space of history and the future.
