Episode 262 of “The Sports Experience Podcast” is here & we're back on the hardwood discussing Moses Malone. A true pioneer in professional basketball, the talented Center bypassed college & jumped straight to the ABA in 1974. After the ABA-NBA merger, Malone found a home in Houston. A dominant rebounder, Malone became the first star for the Rockets. Overall, he won two MVPs and led Houston to the NBA Finals after the 1980-1981 regular season. However, it was in Philadelphia where Malone cemented his legacy as one of the game's best front-court players. In his first season alone, 1982-1983, Malone won his third league MVP, led the NBA in rebounds, helped the Philadelphia 76ers win the NBA Finals and was named MVP of the Finals. Overall, “The Chairman of the Boards” was a 12x All-Star, a 3x MVP and in 2001 was named to the Naismith Memorial Basketball HOF. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-sports-experience-pod/support

Larry is joined by professor and writer Theresa Runstedtler to discuss her new book 'Black Ball: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Spencer Haywood, and the Generation that Saved the Soul of the NBA'. They begin their conversation by discussing how Dr. Runstedler's connection to the NBA via the Toronto Raptors dance team and the corporatization she witnessed within that organization during her stint inspired her to research the primary aspects of her book. Next, they examine the history of segregation in professional basketball, how racial context was tied to the emerging style of play within the game, and pioneers like Connie Hawkins who insisted on wage equality for black players in the league (8:19). They then dive into Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's influence on the ABA-NBA merger and the influence of racially biased media coverage on the public's perception of black players and the sport's overall revenue in the 70's (25:15). After the break, they take a look at the ascension of Simon Gourdine, the first black NBA executive, and talk about the obstacles that hinder black coaches and executives throughout all of the major American sports leagues (38:27). Larry and Theresa end the pod by discussing how the ‘74 Finals, the emergence of Larry Bird, and the inclusion of the slam dunk contest affected the marketability of the NBA (42:42).  Host: Larry Wilmore Guest: Theresa Runstedtler Associate Producer: Chris Sutton Learn more about your ad choices. On the latest episode of the Rex Chapman Show with Josh Hopkins, the guys are joined by ABA/NBA veteran Len Elmore, who is now a practicing attorney and professor for Columbia University. He discusses how his passion for both education and sports helped him flourish into the incredibly accomplished man he is both on and off the basketball court.  5:00 - How much of Len's upbringing during the Civil Rights Movement helped influence his pursuits later in life outside of basketball? 8:30 - It wasn't basketball, but baseball that Len wanted to pursue as a professional athlete. That was at least until his growth spurt changed everything. 9:30 - Len played basketball like Chief in One Flew Over The Cucko's Nest 13:00 - Len discusses his transition from growing up in New York, and attending college at Maryland. Basketball became the culture on that campus as they became one of the best teams in the country. 16:30 - As an accomplished broadcaster himself, of course the guys have to ask Len about calling the iconic Duke-Kentucky game that ended with Christian Laettner's game winner. 22:30 - Len recalls the impact that watching John Carlos and Tommie Smith in the 1968 Olympics had on him, combined with reading Malcom X's autobiography. He said it caused an awakening for him then, and he continues to hold those principles to this day. 37:30 - Len never felt like basketball was beneath him with all of his scholarly pursuits, but he just decided after 10 seasons he was just done. 42:30 - There were plenty of Len's former teammates who took to heart what advice he had for them, knowing everyone needed to find their life's work after basketball.  47:00 - Len and the rest of the Terps gave John Wooden, Bill Walton and UCLA their toughest test as they were in the greatest winning streak in college basketball history. 50:00 - The NCAA Tournament had to expand their field after Len and Maryland were left out after losing the ACC Tournament to NC State 52:00 - Even though they weren't close, the passing of Len Bias just absolutely rocked Len Elmore just like everyone at the time.

Hall of Fame forward Rick Barry is the only player ever to lead the NCAA, NBA, and ABA in scoring. His name appears near the top of every all-time offensive list. He scored more than 25,000 points in his professional career and in four different seasons averaged more than 30 points. He was named to 12 All-Star teams, four All-NBA First Teams, and five All-ABA First Teams. Barry was a nearly unstoppable offensive juggernaut, a passionate competitor with an untempered desire to win.  Barry is widely known for his unorthodox but extraordinarily effective underhand free throw technique. His career .880 free throw percentage ranks No. 1 in ABA history, and at the time of his retirement in 1980, his .900 percentage was the best of any NBA player. In 1987, Barry was honored as one of the league's greatest players of all-time by being named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team. Throughout his career, Strawberry was one of the most feared sluggers in the sport, known for his prodigious home runs and his intimidating presence in the batter's box with his 6 ft 6 in frame and his long, looping swing that elicited comparisons to Ted Williams. During his career, he helped lead the New York Mets to a World Series championship in 1986 and the New York Yankees to three World Series championships in 1996, 1998 and 1999. He was also suspended three times by MLB for substance abuse, leading to many narratives about his massive potential going unfulfilled. A popular player during his career, Strawberry was voted to the All-Star Game eight straight times from 1984 to 1991. Strawberry was formerly an analyst for SportsNet New York.  About Julius Erving Julius Erving is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential basketball players of all time, helping legitimize the American Basketball Association (ABA) as he was the best-known player in the league when it merged into the National Basketball Association (NBA) after the 1975–76 season. "Dr. J" won three championships, four Most Valuable Player Awards, and three scoring titles with the ABA's Virginia Squires and New York Nets (now the NBA's Brooklyn Nets) and the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers. He is the eighth-highest scorer in ABA/NBA history with 30,026 points (NBA and ABA combined). He was well known for slam dunking from the free throw line in slam dunk contests and was the only player voted Most Valuable Player in both the ABA and the NBA. The basketball slang of being posterized was first coined to describe his moves. Erving was inducted in 1993 into the Basketball Hall of Fame and was also named to the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time team. In 1994, Erving was named by Sports Illustrated as one of the 40 most important athletes of all time. In 2004, he was inducted into the Nassau County Sports Hall of Fame.

The birth of the modern-day NBA is often attributed to Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan and David Stern. In From Hang Time to Prime Time: Business, Entertainment, and the Birth of the Modern-Day NBA (Atria Books, 2020), Pete Croatto pays homage to those legendary figures, while putting their contributions to the game in the context of some of the cultural, business and technological forces that built the NBA into a pop culture juggernaut. Croatto examines how the ABA/NBA merger, CBS’s personality-driven coverage of key players, the expansion of cable television, the emergence of hip-hop culture and a brilliant marketing team at NBA Entertainment transformed a fledgling league searching for its identity into a global phenomenon. The breadth and depth of this thoroughly researched book (Croatto interviewed over 300 sources) is staggering, and yet, the author managed to present the narrative in a breezy, easy to read narrative. From Hang Time to Prime Time has something for everyone, appealing to die-hard and casual basketball fans alike. The reader will learn about building a business, marketing a product, music, fashion, technology and more. Paul Knepper was born and raised in New York and currently resides in Austin. On the eve of the 2020 NBA Finals, we dive DEEP into the history and business model of the league behind the world's 2nd largest and fastest growing major sport. How did the NBA grow from merely an excuse to monetize hockey arena off-nights into a global powerhouse with more reach and influence and reach than any other American sport? Tune in!! You can read them below or at: https://www.acquired.fm/episodes/the-nba   Sponsors:  Thanks to Tiny for being our presenting sponsor for all of Acquired Season 7. Tiny is building the "Berkshire Hathaway of the internet" — if you own a wonderful internet business that you want to sell, or know someone who does, you should get in touch with them. Unlike traditional buyers, they commit to quick, simple diligence, a 30-day or less process, and will leave your business to do its thing for the long term. You can learn more about Tiny here: http://tinycapital.com Thank you as well to Bamboo Growth and to Perkins Coie. You can learn more about them at: https://growwithbamboo.com https://www.perkinscoie.com/   Playbook Themes from this Episode: 1. Distribution. Great product-market fit is necessary but not sufficient for outsized success; you also need great distribution. Basketball had great product-market fit from the beginning — it was an indoor sport that could be played in any weather, didn't require lots of specialized equipment or setup, was relatively safe and provided a great player and spectator experience. However basketball's rapid dissemination was helped enormously by its origin within the missionary context of the YMCA organization, which quickly spread the new game to its branches around North America and the world (including and especially China) — all 50 years before the NBA's founding. 2. Hobbies. A corollary to Paul Graham's idea that great markets start as toys: finding the right business model to professionalize an amateur or "hobby" market with a large or rabid fan base can yield massive business opportunities. Basketball was hugely popular for decades before the NBA came along. College and independent professional teams (like the Harlem Globetrotters and New York Rens) proved people would pay to watch great talent; the NBA simply provided the right league structure and real estate to serve that demand at scale. Other examples: personal computers and Apple, electric cars and Tesla, video game streaming and Twitch, bitcoin and Coinbase, etc. 3. Influence = Power. The NBA's strategy to "make the players the stars" has succeeded tremendously, and stands in stark contrast to the other major American sports leagues. NBA players both individually and as a whole have an order of magnitude more social followers than other major American athletes and, relatedly, have also accumulated an order of magnitude more wealth: 7 current and former NBA players have ~half billion wealth or more, compared to only 1 from all other American team sports. Nike's Jordan deal + creation of the Air Jordan brand wrote the blueprint for the modern influencer endorsement (pre-Oprah!), and is perhaps the most successful non-acquisition deal of all-time. Social influence is a compounding network economy: because NBA players have more followers, they win over more fans (and especially young fans) and aspiring athletes than other sports leagues, which leads to new players and stars getting more influence, which repeats the cycle and widens the lead over other sports. 4. Internationalization. The world is a big place. Much more potential talent and customers exist outside any country's borders than inside. The wider you cast your net, the greater rewards you can reap. Starting with the Dream Team in 1992, the NBA embarked on a deliberate campaign to internationalize its image, both with players and fans. The result is this past season 1 billion people watched the NBA (the vast minority of whom were Americans), and 25% of NBA rosters (and probably 50%+ of its young stars) are international. No other major American sport is anywhere close. Regular Acquired mega-theme reminder: China is ALWAYS bigger and more important than you think it is. 600m people in China watch basketball and 300m people play basketball. That's an entire Unites States' worth of developing players, and two US's worth of fans. Whether the future value of those players and fans accrues to the NBA or the CBA (Chinese Basketball Association) will shape everything about the game going forward. 5. Cinematic Universes. The best media properties create and support whole ecosystems around the core product and across mediums. Non-game content like All-Star Weekend and the Slam Dunk Contest, as well as short-form and behind-the-scenes access like SportsCenter highlights, Inside the NBA, etc. provide the NBA with additional compelling (and monetizable) content, all while building the game's reach and deepening fan relationships. Unsurprisingly, this echoes the core of the Disney flywheel. Technology only amplifies this dynamic: social media, over-the-top distribution and direct fan relationships provide more opportunities for the best properties to increase their share of customers' attention. 6. Younger customers = More Future Cashflows. 57% of US 13-17 year-olds list the NBA as their favorite sports league, compared to 13% for the NFL and 4% for MLB. Assuming those numbers hold for this cohort (and younger), the impact on relative future cash flows (and valuations) for the respective sports is enormous. 7. Beachfront property. That said, valuations in any market aren't just driven by the discounted sum of future cashflows; scarcity also matters. Nowhere is this better exhibited than NBA team valuations. Average NBA team valuations have risen 600% in the past decade. Part of this is due to the League's incredible growth. But perhaps as much or more is simply because lots of people want to buy NBA franchises (see e.g., Ballmer) but there are only 30 properties, and ~0-2 are available for purchase at any given time. Darel Carrier is one of the greatest players to ever play in the ABA, the American Basketball Association and he joins me on this edition of Sports Forgotten Heroes. A prolific shooter from 3-point territory, Darel was named to the ABA’s All-Time team and is the leagues career leader in field goal percentage from downtown. In fact, for his career, Darel averaged exactly 20 points-per-game. Darel was a terrific high school basketball player who was offered scholarships by the University of Kentucky and Western Kentucky University. A home-body, as he explains on today’s show, Darel chose WKU over UK and became the Hilltoppers go-to guy almost immediately. His skill on the court caught the eye of the then St. Louis Hawks and Darel was drafted by the team in the 9th Round of the NBA Draft. However, rather than try the NBA, Darel received (as he said) a better offer from the Phillips 66’ers (then one of the greatest Industrial League teams) with the promise of a job. So, off to Oklahoma Darel went and goodbye to the NBA. After three years with Phillips, a new professional basketball league was launching and it was placing a team near Darel’s home in Kentucky. So, Darel opted to try his game on the professional level with the Kentucky Colonels of the ABA (American Basketball Association) and he, along with Louie Dampier, formed one of basketball’s greatest backcourt tandems. The two of them were deadly from downtown and helped build one of the ABA’s most dominant teams. But injuries (a herniated disk and later a torn Achilles) ended Darel’s career after just six seasons. On this episode of Sports’ Forgotten Heroes, Darel talks about his career and the decisions he made that ultimately shaped his career. We look how the ABA-NBA merger came about and how the ABA teams paid dearly to get into the NBA in the latest episode of Over and Back's Basketball Mysteries of the 1970s. We are joined by basketball historian Adam Criblez (@AdamCriblez) to look at the chaotic final 1975-76 season for the ABA with teams folding and the schedule having to be constantly reworked, how the original 1950 NBL-BAA merger that formed the NBA affected this one, prior close calls to a merger and why they didn't work out, how there were many massive obstacles to overcome to make a merger happen, how there was little buzz about a merger coming heading into the NBA owners' meetings, how St. Louis Spirits owners Ozzie and Daniel Silna ended up with the greatest deal in sports history, and how Kentucky Colonels owner John Y. Brown ended up sitting pretty as well. We also discuss how a night of drinking between Nets owner Roy Boe and Knicks owner Mike Burke may have turned the tide in the merger talks, who actually deserves the credit for getting the merger done, how the four ABA teams (Nuggets, Pacers, Nets and Spurs) ended up being treated as expansion teams, and how the ABA players felt about their league coming to an end.
