For over three decades, Felix Finster has been developing a unique and ambitious reformulation of physics known as Causal Fermion Systems (CFS). Physicists usually describe the world in terms of fields defined on a spacetime manifold. Within this familiar framework, abstract quantities such as correlations between matter fields at different points in spacetime can be computed. In mathematical language, these correlations are captured by operators acting on a Hilbert space. What Felix realized is that this process can be reversed. If you start with a suitable collection of operators on a Hilbert space, satisfying certain mathematical properties, you can in principle reconstruct the underlying spacetime and fields that would give rise to those operators as operators of correlations. In this sense, Causal Fermion Systems  offers a dual description of reality. On the one hand, reality can be described in terms of symmetries, fields, and manifolds - the usual language of physics. On the other hand, CFS proposes that reality can just as well be described using abstract structures: Hilbert spaces, operators, and measures on sets of operators. Spacetime, matter, and everything we observe then emerges from these underlying mathematical quantities. The beauty of reformulating physics this way is that it opens up an entirely new framework in which to explore some of the deepest open questions in physics: What is spacetime like at the smallest scales? Why do we see precisely the particles we do in experiments? The hope is that within the CFS framework, answers to such questions might become more natural or even inevitable. Of course, we can't cover a 30-year research program in full detail in a single conversation. The goal here is to get a sense of the flavor of Felix's approach to physics. Dr. Karen Daniels is a Professor in the Department of Physics at North Carolina State University. Karen's lab investigates the physics of how materials change state (e.g. from solid to fluid), how they deform, and how they may ultimately fail. She studies these questions across a variety of length and time scales, from microscopic phenomena that occur in less than a second to shifts in land that occur on geologic timescales and may lead to landslides. Travel is a passion for Karen. While traveling, she loves hiking on mountain trails, eating delicious food, discovering new foods that she can try to make at home, reading books, knitting, and interacting with new people and places. She received her BA in physics from Dartmouth College. Karen then worked for about three years as a science teacher at Saint Ann's School in Brooklyn before enrolling in graduate school at Cornell University where she earned her PhD in physics. She then conducted postdoctoral research at Duke University before joining the faculty at NCSU in 2005. Karen has been awarded a fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to support a yearlong sabbatical at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization in Göttingen, Germany. In addition, Karen was the recipient of a National Science Foundation Early Career Development (CAREER) Award, the Equity for Women Award from NCSU, and the LeRoy and Elva Martin Award for Teaching Excellence. She has also been named a Fellow of the American Physical Society. In our interview, Karen shares more about her life and science.

Physicists have theories about the substance of the universe and describe it as wave-like. The fabric of the universe, so to speak, is woven together with threads of vibration, vibrational threads. Some have even described it as a kind of symphony, the whole universe, because it's woven together by sound, and matter is extremely fluid. It can bend, it can stretch, it can morph into something else, much like music. One can introduce variations to it, and there are modulations. So matter is like that also. In the Bhāgavatam, Kṛṣṇa describes, or Kapiladev describes, how the universe comes from sound as the first element. And from sound, the various other elements emerge and the various patterns in matter are created by various kinds of sounds, coming back to the point that Prabhupāda makes. Acts of creation in this world are dependent on the kinds of sound vibration that we make, or to be more specific, what we say and what we listen to. And as I've mentioned in previous discussions, quoting from the Vedānta-sūtra, the last verse, Anāvṛttiḥ śabdāt, which means everything comes from sound. There are different interpretations of that sūtra, but other ones say that you can become enlightened by sound, or uncovered, Anāvṛtti, by sound, śabdāt. So Prabhupāda mentions how all paraphernalia is available to us. And how do physicists incorporate philosophy into their research? On this episode, we dive into those questions with philosopher Dr. Timothy McGrew and astrophysicist Dr. Luke Barnes in order to help you fine tune your thinking about the fine tuning of the universe. Critics of the fine-tuning argument will often invoke probabilities in order to get around the argument's deeper implication of the existence of God. Tim and Luke will explore some of the issues in probability theory as it informs the physics of the fine-tuning argument. Dr. Timothy McGrewTimothy McGrew is Professor of Philosophy at Western Michigan University, where he has taught for the past 25 years.
