What an amazing array of sounds birds have to offer! The call of a male Yellow Rail sounds like someone tapping two small stones together. And Turkey Vultures hissing at one another over a carcass sound like a snarling lion. The duet between the male and female Barred Owls seen here is especially raucous. In 1977, we sent a Golden Record of the sounds of Earth into space with NASA's Voyager probes. This 'cosmic' calling card inspired the program team to make this - a golden record of Australian sounds. It varies from Nature Track - there are human made sounds and there are human voices, these soundscapes are layered sounds from all over Australia - they're not natural soundscapes. To create the soundscape for our vinyl record - our teams recorded over 200 bespoke sounds - many of which have been arranged into the final composition. Sounds were gathered from as far as the Perth Canyon (20km west coast of Rottnest Island) and as remote as Warramunga in the Northern Territory. Ann's listening notes: 01:00 The beach, above and under the water. 03:00 Pygmy Blue whale song 06:00 Catching a ferry in Sydney 07:20 A plane, there:s always a plane. 08:30 Catching a train 09:00 Can you hear Tom Thum, the beat boxer here? Also you can hear street sounds from Newtown in Sydney. 10:10 A snippet of a conversation that has a swear word in it. 10:30 Iconic Australian pedestrian crossing with the sounds of the city. 11:40 Cicadas buzz, a lyrebird sings the taps are Kristian Benton searching for trees to fell to make a yidaki. 16:00 Natural Sounds are often marred by the sounds of leaf blowers, whipper snippers and other machinery. 21:15 Car on a country road with cow and cockies. a typical Australian scene. 22:30 The Orange Agricultural Show - announcements, motorbikes, chickens, shearing and whip cracking. 24:30 A wood chopping competition. 25:30 Driving on a dirt road - hear the dusty texture and the corrugations. 27:15 Warramunga Seismic and Infrasound Research Station - one of the quietest places on earth. 31:15 Wild cockatiels calling. Here at Restoring Darkness, we are on a mission to eliminate light pollution. Dr. Barber wants to tackle “sensory pollution.” He is doing that by running the Sensory Ecology Lab at Boise State University and studying the effects of light and sound pollution on birds, bats, and insects. Let's eliminate light pollution, then we'll start the “Restoring Silence” podcast! Dr. Barber completed his BS and MS at the University of Wyoming and his PhD at Wake Forest University before he spent 5 years with the National Park Service's Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division for his postdoctoral work. He now runs the Sensory Ecology Lab at Boise State University - a set of scholars dedicated to understanding how sensory environments and sensory pollution impact birds, bats, and insects.

And we revisit a discussion with two researchers studying the beneficial health impacts of listening to natural sounds.
This Band-tailed Pigeon may sound like an owl, but it's a case of mistaken identity. The song of the American Robin could be confused with that of the Black-headed Grosbeak. And then, there's the Black-capped Chickadee. At certain times of year, the male sings "Fee-bee, fee-bee," even though it's not a phoebe. So we found overall an over 180% improvement in groups that listened to natural sounds – we also found large decreases in stress and annoyance in groups that were listening to natural sounds. And then just the breath of different health outcomes, so everything from improving our mood, improving our cognitive abilities – so our ability to do complex tasks, decrease in our pain, and decrease in our levels of stress. So really a remarkable set of benefits just from listening to the sounds of nature. You’ve talked about the benefits, what can you say about what sound does to our body?Sound is such an important sense. It is one of the first senses that form in humans. Babies can hear from 20 weeks in the womb. It’s a very primal sense. It is very under appreciated. There is no such thing as ear lids. We can’t close out ears, so we are constantly taking in information through our ears. Even when you are sleeping you are still hearing and you have reflective capacity for sound. It is such an important sense, and one that often gets ignored because are these visual creatures. So when you go out into nature you think about these beautiful vistas that you see – looking over from a mountain top – yes that is very important, but the sounds that you are experiencing in nature are also really fundamental. You can think of the impact of sound from an evolutionary perspective. So humans are really good at paying attention to signals of danger and signals of safety. A sound environment that is full of sounds of nature, birds, water is a pretty good indicator of a safe environment. So what that allows us to do is let down our guard, it allows for mental recuperation, and relaxation. Whereas an acoustic environment that is empty -- so either it has no natural sounds – the birds have stopped singing – or it has very few natural sounds, that’s a pretty good indicator that something has gone wrong. It might be an indicator of danger. And so what happens is we become vigilant. We are on the look out for what might be wrong. That does not allow for mental recuperation and can actually lead to stress.

Music can also lift your mood, slow your breathing, and create other stress-inducing changes in your body, mind, and soul. (This is a very good thing!) Find out more information about Choosing Meditation Music For Relaxation HERE... Music has many wonderful benefits for stress management and overall health. It can help you calm your physiology without making a conscious effort, and that can alleviate stress in your mind. While 20 minutes is a good minimum time frame for meditation, even one song can be helpful in reducing your stress levels and restoring some of your energy, so take the time that your schedule allows. Stay focused on the music. If you find yourself thinking about other things (or even thinking thoughts about the music), gently redirect your attention to the present moment, the sound of the music, and the feelings in your body that the music evokes. Try to really feel the music. Continue this practice for several minutes, until your time runs out. As thoughts come into your head, gently let them go and redirect your attention to the sound of the music, the present moment, and the physical sensations you feel. The goal of this practice is to quiet your inner voice and just ‘be'. So just ‘be' with the music, and fully immerse yourself, and you'll feel more relaxed fairly quickly. Everything the mind does, everything that happens, is part of the meditation. So don't try to concentrate or force the mind in any way. The only criteria for "right meditation" is that it is easy. The goal, if there is a goal, is effortlessness, but even if we find ourselves making an effort sometimes, that's OK. Just back off and continue. Unbelievably Easy Ways To Improve Your Life... Abstract: Little is known about how neural representations of natural stimuli differ across species. Speech and music for example play a unique role in human hearing, but it is unclear how auditory representations of speech and music differ between humans and other animals. Using functional Ultrasound imaging, we measured responses in ferret auditory cortex to a set of natural and spectrotemporally-matched synthetic sounds previously tested in humans, as well as natural and synthetic ferret vocalizations. Ferrets showed similar frequency and modulation tuning to that observed in humans. But while humans showed selective responses to natural speech and music in non-primary auditory cortex, ferret responses to natural and synthetic sounds were closely matched throughout primary and non-primary regions, even when tested with ferret vocalizations. This finding suggests the unique demands of speech and music have substantially altered higher-order acoustic representations in human auditory cortex, while largely preserving lower-level tuning for frequency and modulation. Abstract: In addition to encoding sound stimulus features, activity in primary auditory cortex (A1) is modulated by non-sensory behavioral state variables, including arousal. Here, we investigated how arousal, measured by pupil size, influences stimulus discriminability in A1. To do this, we recorded from populations of A1 neurons in awake animals while presenting a diverse set of natural sound stimuli. In contrast to previous work, the large stimulus set allowed us to investigate effects of arousal across a wide range of sensory response space. Arousal consistently increased evoked response magnitude and reduced pairwise noise correlations. On average, these changes improved the accuracy of the neural code. However, effects varied across stimuli; neural coding was most improved for areas of the sensory space where noise correlations interfered with the sensory discrimination axis. We also found that first-order modulation of evoked responses and second-order modulation of correlated variability acted on distinct neural populations and timescales, suggesting that arousal interacts with multiple circuits underlying activity in A1. Paul Holdengräber is joined by musician and soundscape ecologist Bernie Krause. Tune in as they discuss Krause’s career and how he arrived at soundscape ecology, the healing potential of natural soundscapes, and the importance in asking ourselves how we are acting toward the people and planet we love.Since 1968, Bernie Krause has traveled the world recording and archiving the sounds of creatures and environments large and small. Working at the research sites of Jane Goodall (Gombe, Tanzania), Biruté Galdikas (Camp Leakey, Borneo), and Dian Fossey (Karisoke, Rwanda), he identified the concepts of the Acoustic Niche Hypothesis (ANH), and biophony the collective and organized acoustic output as each species establishes unique frequency and/or temporal bandwidth within a given habitat. Krause, who holds a PhD in Creative Arts with an internship in Bioacoustics, was a key figure in implementing natural soundscapes as a resource for the U. S. National Park Service. His recent book, The Great Animal Orchestra: Finding the Origins of Music in the World’s Wild Places, was published by Little Brown/Hachette, March, 2012, and has been translated into eight languages.*You may notice the sounds of our natural world included in this special interview. This dawn chorus was captured by Bernie Krause and was recorded April 15th, 2020 at Sugarloaf Ridge State Park in Sonoma Valley, about 50 miles N. of San Francisco.*Credit: Sonoma Valley Sunrise, recording by Bernie Krause, © 2020 Wild Sanctuary. As you know, right now begins the crisis, COVID, people have less money and don't understand what will be next. (2020 is a `great` year). And the most unsafe layers of people have the worst problems. Obviously, I am talking about homeless people, children, nature, and Charities in general. In 'dark times' not everyone thinks about them. It means they must struggle even more than usual. It will not be better soon.I am just trying to say, that we can change something for them. Of course, I understand, that not everybody can help others. If it is you, don't feel bad. Sorry for this messy text. I don't know how to say it better.Peace.-----------------------------------------------------------Hey. I have a podcast about IT. You can handle several days without coffee. However, that money REALLY can help. Even a few dollars. Where to send and how much is only on you. Children, nature, homeless people. Fall back in love with America through stories of strangers in the National Parks. Follow the adventures of a solo female VanLifer exploring the US National Parks, and talking to people she meets about their impact. --- Welcome to the Nat Park Stories Podcast. This is a podcast that follows me, Summer Slevin, as I travel to all the National Parks in my home van with my pup and have conversations with the many strangers I met. In 2015, I went to my first National Park, the Rocky Mountain National Park, and I fell in love. I bought my National Parks Pass, and traveled in my car for two months talking to strangers and exploring Nature. A couple years later, after working the rat race and settling into the corporate world, I found myself burnt out and miserable. I had also witnessed so much division in America that I had started falling out of love with it and looking for international places to relocate. At the end of 2017, I tried to remember a time when I felt at peace and in love with the country. My mind went back to being in the National Parks and talking to people about their beauty. At the beginning of 2018, I decided to create a little home in a van, and set off to all our National Parks for the next two years, in hopes of falling back in love with America. I wanted to start it in a big way, to prove to myself and others that I was serious. In July, I hit the road from my hometown in Central Illinois, and headed to Last Frontier, Alaska. My first park of the podcast, Denali National Park, blew my mind and instantly I felt myself fall back in love with my country. My hope is that you will too, through the stories of strangers I meet in breathtaking places. Each interview will vary — every story is different and inspiring in their own way— most of the time, they will center on what it feels like in that specific national park and why others should visit these protected places. Sometimes you’ll hear my story of exploring the parks, or the people I meet along the way, but most of the stories are of the people I meet in parks. Every month, I plan to release all the episodes from one park, in the order I traveled to each of them. Every 3-6 months, I will take a break, breaking the podcast into seasons. During season one, I will talk to strangers at Denali, Kenai Fjords, and Wrangell - St Elias National Parks all in Alaska, as well as Big Bend, Guadalupe Mountains, and Carlsbad Caverns National Park in Texas and New Mexico. You’ll hear from park rangers, bus drivers, tour guides, retirees, children, friends of mine, families, couples, single travelers, bird watchers, authors, Americans, international travelers, and so much more. You can find pictures and stories of the parks, people, and my adventures -and chat with me-, on my Facebook, Instagram, and website. Just search Nat-Park-Stories. And if you want to support this podcast, receive post cards from the parks, get behind the scenes content and more, go to Patreon.com/NatParkStories. Just a note, most of these recordings are captured outside — in the parks, so you might hear quite a bit of Natural Sounds… please bare with me. I have also never created a podcast before, so I’m really open to your feedback about what you think will make this podcast even better. Feel free to reach out to me on Facebook, Instagram, or my website. I am really so excited to share this journey with you, so let’s get started! :)
Purely in the interests of completeness, we're further compounding today's tawdry transgressions…
Music history is full of examples of composers who used environmental sounds in their works, notably Ludwig van Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, in which he uses Western instruments to mimic the sounds of three different species of birds. In the 20th century, composers were able to use recordings of natural sound in their works, but not without … Continue reading "Ep. 3: Natural Sounds in Musical & Social Practice"

After flying thousands of kilometres from faraway Bangladesh and New Zealand via the Yellow Sea, the shorebirds of the East Asian Flyway complete their northward migration. They touch down in the Arctic Russia and Alaska to breed. In May and June, birds such as the endangered spoon-billed sandpiper and red knot fill the air of the Russian tundras with their mating calls and display flights. But why travel so far to raise the next generation? Presenter Ann Jones also discovers why Russian and British conservationists are taking eggs from the nests of the spoon-billed sandpiper, the most endangered shorebirds in the world, in a last ditch effort to save the species from extinction. Finally, with the mating season finished and a new generation ready to migrate for the first time, we follow the incredible non-stop flight of nine days by the bar-tailed godwit, as it migrates south from Alaska all the way to New Zealand. The record-breaking species is helped by somehow being able to sense the weather patterns across the entire Pacific Ocean. The series is a co-production from the BBC World Service and Australian ABC Radio National. The sound recordings from Russia and Alaska were provided by the Macaulay Library of Natural Sounds at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. (Photo: Spoon-billed sandpiper chick in Chukotka, NE Russia. Can China’s new generation of birdwatchers and North Korea’s weak economy save migratory birds from extinction? Habitat loss for shorebirds in the Yellow Sea is rapid as the mudflats on which they depend are converted to farmland, factories, ports, oil refineries and golf courses. But all is not lost on the East Asian Australasian Flyway. Ann Jones travels around the northern end of the Yellow Sea, talking to the world’s leading shorebird researchers and Chinese nature lovers about their concerns for the Flyway’s future. They discuss their feelings for the long distance migration champions of the natural world, like the Eastern curlew and bar-tailed godwit. Ann also meets the New Zealand conservationists who have just emerged from North Korea with good news about the birds. The series is a co-production from the BBC World Service and Australian ABC Radio National. Additional recordings were provided by the Macaulay Library of Natural Sounds at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Produced by Andrew Luck-Baker and Ann Jones. Ann Jones flies north to Shanghai as shorebirds from as far away as Australia, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar and Bangladesh arrive on the coast of the Yellow Sea. Here she meets a traditional whistling bird hunter who used to catch shorebirds for the pot but now does it for science. Bird mimic Mr Jin Weiguo demonstrates his centuries-old technique of bird trapping - luring them into nets by copying the different calls of the many different species. Scientists can then attach ID rings and GPS transmitters to follow their migration and estimate their declining numbers. In ten years as a conservation trapper, Mr Jin has caught more than 10,000 birds. In Jiangsu province to the north of Shanghai, Ann also spots the world’s smallest and most endangered shorebird – the remarkable spoon-billed sandpiper. This species is regarded as the Panda of migratory shorebirds – a charismatic flagship species for the protection of the rapidly disappearing mudflats on which all the migratory shorebirds and local fisher folk depend. Ann meets the Shanghai birders who set up an NGO to save the most important surviving locations for this bird’s crucial spring and autumn breaks in the Yellow Sea. One 7km stretch of coast, known as Tiaozini, hosts at least 50% of the world’s spoon-billed sandpiper population, which after a precipitous decline now numbers about 200 breeding pairs. Tiaozini is now recognised worldwide as a critical place for the species’ survival. The provincial government has advanced plans to convert Tiaozini into dry land within five years. Additional recordings in this programme were provided by the Macaulay Library of Natural Sounds at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. This mix is built around mysterious vocals. Vocals that may guide you, or lure you, into distances unknown. Often, but not exclusively, female, and some of them not even human - like the beautiful flute-playing by Jean-Christophe Bonnafous, or the mysterious singing sound of the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko that was recently discovered during the Rosetta space missions. With just a little fantasy you can imagine the Philae Space Lander being attracted by the comet's song - ultimately leading it to an untimely death. --- originally published on Ambientblog --- Start - Length - Artist - Title (Album Title, Release Year, Label #) 00:00 2:39 Mendel Kaelen - Suñayaca Tãla(Sequence 8, 2014, Futuresequence SEQ008)01:51 01:41 Hildur Gudnadottir - Poka(Saman, 2014, Touch TO:96)03:16 00:54 Dan Romer & Benh Zeitlin - End of the World Theme(Beasts of the Southern Wild OST, 2012, Thirty3 and a 3rd Records)03:28 04:06 Giulio Aldinucci - Fieno(Aer, 2014, Dronarivm DR-25)05:56 03:46 Iva Bittová - Fragment VI(Iva Bittová, 2013, ECM Records ECM 2275)07:13 02:55 Ambient Music Therapy - Sleep 3(Ultimate Sleep System, 2005, Self-Released)08:07 02:57 Above, Convenience Store! - Boneyard Stray Dog(Building in Search of the Sun, 2013, Sparkwood Records SR01)10:15 03:54 Penjaga Insaf - Pulang(Sama Sadja, 2010, Power & Steel PAS27)11:52 01:47 Andrew Skeoch & Sarah Koschak - Distant Bellbirds(Favourite Australian Birdsong, 2001, Listening Earth LECD 10)13:25 01:28 Andrew Skeoch & Sarah Koschak - Pied Butcherbirds(A Morning in the Australian Bush, 1996, Listening Earth LECD 9601)14:11 01:06 Ambrose Field - Technoform 7(Quantaform Series, 2013, Sargasso SCD28071)14:45 00:40 Andrew Liles - Tinder Box(Black Beauty, 2007, Beta-Lactam Ring Records MT127)14:54 05:02 Enrico Coniglio - Existenz Minimum(Areavirus Topofonie Vol. 1, 2007, Psychonavigation Records PSY 020)19:32 01:30 Cliff Martinez - Wrong Floor(Drive OST, 2011, Sony/Lakeshore Records 88691975162)20:36 03:21 Field Rotation - The Repetition of History(Fatalist The Repetition of History, 2013, Denovali DEN161)23:30 01:25 Asne Valland Nordli - Veverskens Tid(Over Tones, 2014, ECM Records ECM 2315)24:30 04:01 Darren Harper - Will My Memories of You Hold True(Suspended Memory, 2011, Self-released)26:48 04:06 David Toop - Disposal Chute Inoperative(Mondo Black Chamber, 2014, Sub Rosa SR385)29:39 01:57 Jack Dangers - Blast Off(Bathyscape Trieste, 2013, Primary Numbers PRIMA007)31:03 02:32 Andrew Liles - Aviophilia(In My Father's House There Are Many Mansions, 2006, Fourth Dimension Records FDCD68)32:50 02:16 Rodolpho Alexis - Parabolic Amphibian Mix (Various Tree Frogs)(The Wire Tapper 34, 2014, Wire Magazine Issue 362)33:37 02:00 Lustmord - Babel(The Word as Power, 2013, Blackest Ever Black BLACKESTCD004)35:17 03:18 Desert of Hiatus - Trepidation's Skin(Inconsolable Grief, 2014, self-released)37:51 02:56 Alogon - Snow(Wound, 2014, Under U.R. 08)38:49 02:29 Jean-Christophe Bonnafous - Alterina(Graines de Berceuses, 2012, Prokosnovénie, Prik144)39:28 02:23 A Day for Strange Birds - The Night Creeps(The Sound Between The Noise, 2014, self-released)40:40 02:16 Stefkovic van Interesse - Nebelmarsch(In the Fields, 2013, Self-Released)42:35 04:24 Pauline Oliveros - Watertank Software(Vor Der Flut - Hommage an einen Wasserspeicher, 1985, Eigelstein Musikproduktion, ES2025/26 CD)46:37 00:55 Paul Schütze - Sacred Agents(New Maps of Hell, 1996, Big Cat ABB 104 CD )47:02 03:31 Deaf Center - The Day I Would Never Have(Owl Splinters, 2011, Type TYPE080 )50:02 03:15 Mariolina Zitta - Sonar(Concert for Bats, Voices and Natural Sounds, 2007, Earth Ear ee6142)51:46 02:33 Max Eastley - Hydrophone String Installation(Installation Recordings 1973 - 2008, 2010, Paradigm Discs PD26)53:08 05:27 Ian William Craig - Either Or(A Turn of Breath, 2014, Recital 8)57:12 02:27 Mica Levi - Alien Loop(Under the Skin OST, 2014, Milan M2-36678)58:24 00:41 ESA Operations - A Singing Comet(ESA Operations Rosetta Mission, 2014, Soundcloud)59:00 00:47 Jon Hopkins - Distant Fire(How I Live Now OST, 2013, Just Music TAO056)
Mark and Kevin geek out on just about everything, including being bored with current technology.
Sound is one of the most important means of communication between living things. This is because natural sounds have complex structures. Here we lift the lid on this complexity, with a look at the structure of sounds made by various musical instruments.
What exactly happens at the moment night changes back into day again, when darkness slowly retreats and light comes back in? Are we aware of what happens outside, at that time of day most of us are still sleeping? What sort of animals or creatures are hiding from the light, and what sort finally dare to come out again? Would we discover “Dawn Secrets” when we'd leave our own safe and familiar surroundings? To be honest, I did not start this mix with this theme in mind…it just ‘dawned' on me when listening to it when it was almost finished…But from the start, I wanted this mix to have a strong ‘environmental' feel (but not only include field recordings). --- originally published on Ambientblog --- Playlist: 00:00 Atom TM - Notturni No.1- 1i3835tra3Um3, 2010, Rather Interesting RI06700:52 Atom TM - Notturni No.2- 1i3835tra3Um3, 2010, Rather Interesting RI06702:54 Plinth - Drift- Flotsam, 2006, Second Language SL05X04:47 Jon Hopkins- Dawn - Monsters (OST), 2010, Domino Records DS036CD06:03 Simon Whetham - Music's a Wood you Walk Through- Wood - Dragon's Eye Fifth Anniversary, 2011, Dragon's Eye Recording de600807:54 Enrico Coniglio - The Crab's Secrets- Underwater Noises, 2011, Ephre Imprint/Lost Children Netlabel10:19 Mariolina Zitta - Cave Calls- Concert for Bats, Voices and Natural Sounds, 2007, Earth Ear ee614212:50 Philip Samartzis - General Electric- Audible Geography, 2008, Room40 EDRM41613:50 Un Vortice di Bassa Pressione - Hydrocoma Pt. 3- Underwater Noises, 2011, Ephre Imprint/Lost Children Netlabel15:30 Listening Mirror - The Organist- Coffee Break Ambient, 2010, Audio Gourmet Netlabel AGN02115:50 Chubby Wolf - Vocal Sounds Vibrate Air- Wood - Dragon's Eye Fifth Anniversary, 2011, Dragon's Eye Recording de600816:24 Balmorhea - Palestrina- Constellations, 2010, Western Vinyl WEST07020:50 Johann Johannsson - Sifreri- Explorer's Club 7 - Reykjavik, 2010, Loaf LOAF36D722:07 Wil Bolton - Slate- Time Lapse, 2010, Hibernate HB2223:40 Sigur Rós - Kafari- Sing me to Sleep (Indie Lullabies), 2010, American Laundromat Records ALR-002328:35 Jos Smolders - Aiolos (Vangsaa Exterior)- Various Sampler Contributions, 2010, Earlabs32:43 Julien Mier - Breathe With Me- Flakes, 2010, Esc.Rec esc.rec.30 / Lomechanik lomek1534:28 Sleepingdog - Polish Love Song- Sampler Winter 2010, 2010, Gizeh Records37:40 Markus Mehr - Datenwolke- Lava, 2010, Hidden Shoal Recordings HSR06939:40 Keith Kenniff - Anchor's Hold- The Last Survivor, 2010, Unseen Music40:52 Jon Hopkins - Attack- Monsters (OST), 2010, Domino Records DS036CD42:16 MiaMia - Bend Over Harder- Flakes, 2010, Esc.Rec esc.rec.30 / Lomechanik lomek1543:50 Enrico Coniglio - Fondamente Nove Incl. 130 Cm S- Salicornie Topofonie, Vol. 2, 2010, Psychonavigation PSY03947:25 Giya Kancheli - Theme From Hamlet, Var.
