Babita Deokaran: Gauteng Health boss Lerato Madyo suspended amid R850m Tembisa hospital scandal

Gauteng health department CFO Lerato Madyo was suspended on Friday morning as the R850-million Tembisa Hospital scandal, discovered by Babita Deokaran, deepens. Well-placed sources in the department said Madyo was placed on suspension on Friday morning, a month after News24 began publishing a series of exposes, titled 'Silenced'. In the weeks before her assassination last year, Deokaran stumbled across a surge in spending out of the East Rand hospital, and called for a stop to payments and an urgent investigation. Her pleas were ignored. Deokaran confided in Madyo that her life may be in danger just days before the killing. News24 revealed that Madyo sat on her concerns until after she was murdered, and never acted on a report into the "possibly fraudulent" payments from the hospital. Gauteng Premier David Makhura last week announced the appointment of an independent investigator, and the SIU also announced that it had started the process to launch their own inquiry. This came as Madyo faced an internal inquiry, called upon to explain her inaction around Deokaran's warnings around Tembisa Hospital, and why her concerns were not escalated. News24 identified a web of shell corporations which extracted more than R110-million through dubious contracts in a matter of weeks, selling everything from medical equipment to skinny jeans to the hospital. Madyo could not be reached for comment at the time of publishing.

Peter Major on Implats proposed buyout of Royal Bafokeng Platinum

Veteran mining analyst Peter Major sits down to discuss Impala Platinum's prospective takeover of mid-tier precious metals producers Royal Bafokeng Platinum (RBP). The news follows Sibanye-Stillwater's acquisition of a nickel and copper mine in Brazil for $1bn. Today, African Rainbow Minerals issued a cautionary announcement ahead of a prospective acquisition from competitors Anglo American. There is M&A mania in the air in the commodity sector, the likes of which has not been seen since the commodity bust 15 or so years ago. Despite traders and investors generally skittish about the flurry of deals in the resources sector, Major believes Impala's prospective takeover of RBP makes sense given the synergies. RBP market value ballooned 20% following the announcement, adding over R6bn to its market cap. RBP is trading at a touch over R110 per share (as of the close of trade on Thursday) with a market cap of R32bn. A deal around the size of R40bn could be on the cards.

Thabo Simbini claimed to have terminated more than 6-thousand employees from their employment during lockdown. However, his company, Impossible Services , did not have any employees other than himself. Simbini allegedly fraudulently used people's IDs to claim for UIF and relief benefits without their knowledge. The company was paid more than R110-million based on the fraudulent claims. Meanwhile, Simbini's bank accounts had been frozen by the Assets Forfeiture Unit. The case has been postponed to January 29th. We spoke to our reporter Maluti Obuseng.

Andrew Cuomo on Thursday announced an investment program that would allocate $750 million to build charging stations and other electric-vehicle infrastructure as part of the state's long-term goal to reduce emissions. The measure is set to create more than 50,000 charging stations and will largely be funded by the state's investor-owned utility companies, with the total budget capped at $701 million through 2025." reports Autoblog: "An additional $48.8 million is allocated from a 2017 settlement with German carmaker Volkswagen AG over its diesel emissions cheating scandal to fund electric school and transit buses, as well as charging stations. New York's announcement comes on the heels of a similar measure by Florida, which on July 10 announced an $8.6 million investment to expand charging stations."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/07/17/new-york-to-invest-750-million-to-expand-electric-vehicle-infrastructure/   RENAULT ZOE VAN REVEALED AS PRACTICAL SMALL EV WITH 245-MILE RANGE "Created by applying modest modifications to the Zoe road car – most notably opaque rear windows and the removal of the rear seats to form a flat load area – the Zoe Van will be powered by the same 52kWh battery pack and 107bhp R110 electric motor. Its range is rated at 245 miles per charge under the WLTP test cycle, allowing for a 50% payload and 75kg driver."£ says Autocar: "Prices without VAT but with the plug-in van grant start at £19,380 and rise to £20,995, highlighting the business savings over the Zoe road car, which starts from £28,795 with VAT and prior to the application of the electric vehicle grant."   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/renault-zoe-van-revealed-practical-small-ev-245-mile-range   UK COULD BAN NON-ELECTRIC NEW CAR SALES BY 2030, SAYS SHELL "Royal Dutch Shell expects the UK can end the sale of gasoline and diesel vehicles in just a decade, as the nation attempts to eliminate emissions by the middle of the century." accordin to WorldOil.com: "The ban can be brought forward to 2030 with “the right policy and incentives,” Sinead Lynch, the head of oil giant Shell’s operations in Britain said on LinkedIn. That’s five years earlier than the deadline set by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in February, and also beats the 2032 date that Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said may be possible to achieve. Furthermore, Porsche recently announced the RWD version of the Taycan, which will bring the base price even lower. However, the German automaker has only confirmed deliveries of that version for the Chinese market so far."   https://electrek.co/2020/07/17/porsche-taycan-electric-car-first-half-2020/   GENERAL MOTORS PROVIDES DETAILS FOR LINE OF FUTURE ELECTRIC VEHICLES Beginning in 2020, GM’s EV portfolio will begin to expand with launches by Chevrolet, GMC and Buick. Maybe you cannot afford a watch or choose a watch because you have a cellphone that does everythign but you might buy jewelry. The EQC turns out to be very strong in adult and child occupant safety:   Adult Occupant - 96% Child Occupant - 90% Vulnerable Road Users - 75% Safety Assist - 75%   "Mercedes-Benz enters the all-electric market with the fully-electric compact luxury SUV EQC. This is the first of Daimler’s EQ range, and its rating augers well, with a five-star rating and good all-round performance. The EQC is part of a growing trend towards battery electric vehicles and joins Jaguar’s I-Pace and Audi’s e-tron amongst the cars that Euro NCAP has tested, and Tesla’s Model X, which will be assessed later this year.   https://insideevs.com/news/368786/mercedes-benz-eqc-5-star-euro-ncap/   MERCEDES-BENZ TEASES EQS ELECTRIC SEDAN "Mercedes-Benz moves forward with its Mercedes-Benz EQ electric subbrand by teasing a new model ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show. It appears to be the EQS, which would be an all-electric S-Class counterpart. Electric luxury without compromises." says Motor1.com: "We already saw a few reports about the EQS coming, including spy photos of a camouflaged prototype, but there are no details. For sure we can expect long-range and specs even better than in the case of the Mercedes-Benz EQC - the first in the EQ lineup. 500 km (310 miles) of WLTP range would be a must we guess, just like at least 150 kW charging."   https://insideevs.com/news/368703/mercedes-benz-teased-eqs/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-   TESLA TRANSPORTS MODEL 3 RHD UNITS TO PHILADELPHIA PORT FOR FASTER UK TRANSIT "Several semi-truck loads of Tesla Model 3 right-hand-drive (RHD) vehicles are on their way from the company’s headquarters in California to the Port of Philadelphia for transit to UK customers. This alternative route of travel will reportedly provide quicker delivery times than the usual path that takes the all-electric cars around the western part of the country via the Port of San Francisco and through the Panama Canal. Tesla’s strategy could help increase its Q2 2019 delivery numbers and possibly provide cost savings from the shorter delivery distances traveled." reports TEslarati: The quicker transit looks to save about two weeks from Tesla’s shipping time, as detailed in a report published by XAutoWorld. The usual San Francisco to the Port of Zeebrugge (Belgium) route is around 10,600 nautical miles with an average shipping time of 24 days, depending on a few variables. The distance from Philadelphia to Zeebrugge is about 4,000 nautical miles with a travel time of around 10 days."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-transports-model-3-rhd-units-to-philadelphia-port-for-faster-uk-transit/   HYUNDAI MOTORSPORT OFFERS SECOND SNEAK PEEK AT FIRST EV RACE CAR "Hyundai Motorsport is really excited about its first electric car envisioned for racing and released a second video teaser ahead of its unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 10." writes Mark Kane for InsideEVs: "The teaser is focused around the power and electricity, which probably heralds hundreds of kW of power and some crazy performance.   The video description says: "He's always said the Hyundai i30 N TCR was like his child. And now he's created a monster! FIA WTCR winner Gabriele Tarquini gives life to the first Hyundai electric race car. All will be revealed on September 10 at IAA in Frankfurt."   https://insideevs.com/news/368706/hyundai-motorsport-sneak-peek-ev-race-car/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-   MCLAREN RULES OUT ELECTRIC HYPERCAR BECAUSE IT WOULD BE TOO HEAVY "McLaren has dabbled in electrifying its vehicles before. Remember the P1, McLaren’s limited-edition plug-in hybrid? It’s pictured above. McLaren built 375 examples over about two years and has yet to return to the battery-powered performance. That doesn’t mean McLaren isn’t exploring alternative powertrain options." according to Anthony at MOtor1: "In a new interview with Motoring.com.au, Jamie Corstorphine, McLaren’s global marketing director, said the company is exploring a fully electric offering; however, the company wouldn’t produce one until it could promise it’d be a better sports car. It doesn't want to offer one simply to meet new emission standards or another benchmark. That means McLaren’s pursuit of lightness won’t go away with an electric hypercar. "   https://www.motor1.com/news/368722/no-mclaren-electric-hypercar-yet/   LAMBORGHINI UNVEILS SUPERCAR WITH SUPERCAPACITORS "Lamborghini has its “most powerful car ever produced,” the Sián, and they did so by creating a novel hybrid powertrain with supercapacitors. Supercapacitors are unlike electrochemical batteries. They can charge and discharge in just seconds, but the drawback is that most of them have low energy density and can’t store enough energy to be viable for a product like an electric car." writes Fred at Electrek: "Lamborghini, who hasn’t been quick to adopt electric technology, has been at the forefront of using supercapacitors in its supercars. Now the Sián is the latest example of how the automaker is adopting the technology by being “the world-first application of a supercapacitor for hybridization.”   Lamborghini says this of their supercapacitor: "It is three times more powerful than a battery of the same weight and three times lighter than a battery producing the same power. Located in the bulkhead between cockpit and engine it ensures perfect weight distribution. The electric system with the supercapacitor and e-motor weighs only 34 kg, thus it delivers a remarkable weight-to-power ratio"   https://electrek.co/2019/09/04/lamborghini-sian-supercar-supercapacitors/   HONDA E TO APPEAR IN 2 VERSIONS – UP TO 220 KM RANGE "Honda will present its first electric model for the European market in serial production at the IAA and is teasing photos of the final version in advance. Furthermore, the Japanese manufacturer stated they plan to mention previously unknown details." says electrive: "The electric motor of the Honda e will be available in two power ratings of 100 kW and 113 kW, with a torque of 315 Nm each. The 35.5 kWh battery is intended to provide a range of up to 220 kilometres – Honda had previously mentioned 200 kilometres. The technical data, however, are still internal data of the manufacturer. With these key data and the CCS rapid charging capability, the Honda e certainly offers more than sufficient driving performance for its intended purpose as a commuter vehicle. Honda currently estimates fuel consumption at 18 to 20 kWh per 100 kilometers – even the more powerful BMW i3, which is less aerodynamic due to its height, achieves better values."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/09/04/honda-e-to-appear-in-2-versions-up-to-220-km-range/   RENAULT UNVEILS UK PRICING AND SPECIFICATION FOR NEW ZOE The new all-electric Renault ZOE will be available to order from mid-September, with prices starting at just £18,670 and customer deliveries from January 2020. Show #517   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 3rd July 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.     Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Hello to new supporter SUNDIP MISTRY and new PRODUCER ROB CRAWFORD. Plus a new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER PETER & DEE ROBERTS. @thejollyEVfan @mapleleafdriver from Oxfordshire EVs   TESLA DELIVERS RECORD-SMASHING 95,200 CARS "Tesla has just released some record-crushing numbers, which beat estimates of 91,000 from several combined analysts."Tesla reported a total of approximately 95,200 vehicles delivered globally in Q2 2019. The automaker breaks this down for us as follows:   Model 3: 77,550. Model S and Model X: 17,650." according to the InsideEVs Sales Scorecard: "On the production front, the numbers are 72,531 for the Model 3 and 14,517 for the Model S and X combined. Total production hit 87,048 in Q2."   From Tesla: "Orders generated during the quarter exceeded our deliveries, thus we are entering Q3 with an increase in our order backlog. We believe we are well positioned to continue growing total production and deliveries in Q3."   From InsideEVsForum user 'Benz': "Total number of combined global EV deliveries in the first half of 2019 were nearly 160,000 (probably 158,200). That means that during the second half Tesla will have to deliver more than 200,000 EV's in order to reach their target of at least 360,000 EV deliveries in 2019. During the second half of the year the number of EV deliveries are always substantially higher than in the first half of the year. Therefore, I think that they will manage to reach that annual global target of more than 360,000 EV deliveries."   But financial bloggers weren't happy to celebrate. From Reuters: "Tuesday’s numbers helped take the sting off a difficult first quarter, in which deliveries plunged and the company lost $702 million. That fraught quarter – hurt by logistics issues at Tesla’s international ports and a drop-off in U.S. orders after the tax credit was halved – spurred worries that Tesla may have tapped a limited market for electric cars at premium prices. Despite the positive second-quarter delivery numbers, Wedbush analyst Dan Ives cautioned that “the Street remains skeptical.”   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-tesla-deliveries/tesla-delivers-record-number-of-electric-cars-in-quarter-shares-up-8-idUSKCN1TX2PL?il=0   CNBC chose to focus on the competition: "Tesla is facing increased competition for the high-end electric sports car market as automakers from Ford to Jaguar invest billions of dollars to develop their own electric lineups. Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz began taking orders in May for new battery-electric vehicles with plans to roll out more models in the coming years. Jaguar’s I-Pace all-electric SUV swept industry awards at the New York Auto Show in April."   https://www.cnbc.com/2019/07/02/tesla-q2-2019-production-and-delivery-numbers.html   The Verge reported the good news, but quickly went in for a heavy tackle with a reminder about exec departures: "News of Tesla’s quarterly performance comes at a time where Tesla lost three high-ranking executives in the span of a week. Peter Hochholdinger, one of the company’s production VPs, was recently hired away by EV startup Lucid Motors. VP of engineering Steve MacManus left Tesla after four years with the company, and VP of Tesla Europe, Jan Oehmicke, also left the company this week."   https://www.theverge.com/2019/7/2/20680078/tesla-q2-deliveries-production-record-elon-musk   CNN Business took the story about strong demand and wrote this: "In the meantime, investors will be closely watching for hints about ongoing demand for Tesla's electric cars, as well as details about the company's cash reserves. Tesla has large debt payment obligations on the horizon."   https://edition.cnn.com/2019/07/02/tech/tesla-sales/index.html   And on Bloomberg, Ben Kallo had to respond to the host trying to find a negative story in international deliveries, and watch out for the female host who asks if people are waiting before more luxurious cars like the Model Y comes out: [audio]   This is Rebecca Lindland from rebeccadrives.com: [audio]   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-07-02/tesla-sets-deliveries-record-as-u-s-buyers-race-for-tax-credit   Bloombergs Dana Hull wrote" Tesla’s Model 3 sales are far outpacing rivals. General Motors Co. sold just 3,965 of its all-electric Chevrolet Bolt in the second quarter, while Volkswagen AG’s Audi delivered just 1,835 battery-powered E-Tron SUVs."   On Twitter from @alpsoy66: "4  countries in Europe have very surprising Tesla delivery results in Q2: Sweden: 1745   (%45 more than Q1) Denmark 792  (%92 more than Q1) Italy: 840  (%120 more than Q1) Portugal 664  (%39 more than Q1) they r traditionally not EV countries. $tsla single handedly opened markets"   RENAULT ANNOUNCES PRICING FOR ZOE Z.E. 50 IN GERMANY "Renault will make the new ZOE Z.E. 50 available for order in Germany by the end of July at prices starting from €31,990 ($36,144). The price difference between the new Z.E. 50 (52 kWh battery) and the outgoing Z.E. 40 (41 kWh) is €2,000. While the difference between the version with and without batteries (rental) is €8,090 (or €155 per kWh)." says InsideEVs.com: "At such prices, Renault ZOE should stay very competitive against current and upcoming new models like the Peugeot e-208."   ZOE Z.E. 40 LIFE (R110): : €21,900 + monthly battery rental fee ZOE Z.E. 50 INTENS (R135): €27,900 + monthly battery rental fee   Renault ZOE R135 specs (see full description here):   52 kWh lithium-ion battery (air cooled) up to 390 km (242 miles) of WLTP range 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in less than 10 seconds 80-120 km/h (50 to 75 mph) in 7.1 seconds top speed of 140 km/h (87 mph) R135 electric motor: 100 kW of peak power and 245 Nm of peak torque R110 electric motor (option): 80 kW of peak power and 225 Nm of peak torque DC fast charging using CCS Combo 2, up to 50 kW AC charging of up to 22 kW (3-phase)   https://insideevs.com/news/357763/renault-zoe-ze-50-prices-germany/   HONDA E: There's a new Fully Charged video of Robert driving the new Honda E. Whilst Honda say: "The Honda e, is equipped with a high-power electric motor delivering up to approximately 150PS (110 kW) and impressive torque in excess of 300Nm. The 35.5kWh battery in the Honda e is one of the most compact in its class, contributing to an exceptional balance of low weight, fast-charging capability of 80% in 30 minutes, and a range of over 200km, perfect for every day urban commuting. The Honda e will also offer Single Pedal Control, enabling the driver to accelerate and slow the car using only the accelerator pedal."   "It’s small size with short front and rear overhangs corroborated with a 4.3-meter turning radius should make it ideal for the urban jungle, while comfort for passengers will be granted by the four-wheel independent McPherson Strut setup. Replacing conventional side mirrors, cameras will come as standard equipment even on the base model and will be accompanied by two screens mounted at the corners of the modern dashboard." reports Motor1.com   https://www.motor1.com/news/357616/2020-honda-e-power-specs/   VOLKSWAGEN EXEC ON ID.3, NEW ELECTRIC CARS: TESLA IS FOR ‘INNOVATORS,’ VW FOR ‘EARLY ADOPTERS’ "A new interview with Volkswagen’s chief marketing officer reveals some of the reasoning behind the carmaker’s electric car strategy, including further details on the company’s new operating system and Automotive Cloud. Volkswagen chief marketing officer Jochen Sengpiehl talked to Automotive News Europe about the company’s new marketing approach when it comes to EVs." says Phil at Electrek: "Volkswagen is calling the target audience for the ID.3 “aspirational middle class,” and Sengpiehl talked about how it fits into the progression of widespread electric adoption: "The Golf appeals to the masses. Tesla appeals to innovators. After the innovators come the early adopters. We want to target those early adopters. That’s why our communication is more edgy than with our conventional cars. If you catch the early adopters, the others will follow."   https://electrek.co/2019/07/02/vw-exec-new-evs/   BMW PHEVS FROM 2020 WILL BE ZERO EMISSION IN EDRIVE ZONES "BMW announced that from 2020 on, new plug-in hybrid models will be equipped with BMW eDrive Zones function as standard. The brief description says that the cars will switch automatically to an all-electric mode in zero-emission city zones." according to InsideEVs: "In cities that establish “green zones” solely for emission-free driving, geofencing technology will be able to recognise these automatically. When the vehicle enters one of these zones, it will automatically switch to pure electric driving mode. In this way, BMW is paving the way for plug-in hybrids to receive the same access rights to green zones as fully-electric vehicles, since they behave the same in these areas."   https://insideevs.com/news/357512/bmw-phevs-2020-zero-emission-edrive-zones/   WHAT IS A FOOT GARAGE? Porsche PR has released an interview with Michael Mauer, style director of the electric Taycan: "Because you also can’t just make the vehicle wider, the specific challenge was to position the passengers as low as possible without them having to assume a reclined position like in a Formula 1 racing car. We solved this with so-called “foot garages”     COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. The Fat Wallet Show from Just One Lap
Should you have money offshore? (#148)

The Fat Wallet Show from Just One Lap

Play Episode Listen Later May 19, 2019 62:06

At what point did South Africans become so obsessed with having money offshore? For a while everyone was obsessed with gold, then something about Jacob Zuma and suddenly Magnus Heystek was a thing, like a bad dream. Our friend Edwin has this ability to ask a question in a way that stretches my brain more than any answer ever could. This week, his question was simple, “What's the point of taking money out of the country?” What, indeed! P.S. If you wanted to catch a movie with us at the JSE, you can register here. Subscribe to our RSS feed here. Subscribe or rate us in iTunes. Edwin I have little money offshore from a previous company share scheme. It is in an account managed by the company scheme and doesn't cost me anything or grow. It just sits there. It's in pounds, so every time the Rand drops I feel richer. I also like the thought of having an emergency stash offshore should I need it one day. I have thought of repatriating this money and it raised a whole lot of other questions. What is the point of sending money to another country when you can 1) Buy global shares and ETFs with Rands from SA 2) Buy currency if you need it quite easily through a number of platforms e.g. Standard Bank Shyft, Easy Equities. Unless someone is buying a villa off the south coast of France, or planning to spend time overseas why do people bother “sending money offshore” when you can just as easily buy the Rand hedge in Rand in a locally sold ETF or in currency itself? What am I missing? Is there an advantage to having your physical currency in another country or should I bring my pounds back home and just buy a low cost ETF? Pierre I've been contributing fairly regular lump sums to an offshore USD denominated Allan Gray unit trust since about 2016. According to Allan Gray the costs of this investment are as follows: Annual investment management fee = 1.16% Annual platform administration fee = 0.56% Annual financial advisor fee = 1.15% I'm not sure if this total of 2.87% includes fees that the company who does to actual exchange from ZAR to USD charges every time I add to the investment. Should I just stop contributing to this unit trust, hope for the best and continue contributing to my EasyEquities USD Vanguard S&P500 ETF? Should I try to close this investment, have the funds exchanged to ZAR and reinvest it into EasyEquities USD. I am not aware of a way to have the investment directly transferred from Allan Gray US to EasEquities USD, are you? Mzwa For all the noise that comes with it, BBBEE schemes in my opinion are not radical at all, and barely benefit the average black retail investor. Instead they largely benefit high net worth and these BBBEE connected folks and well-poised trusts and institutions. I say this because mainly because of the complexity that it comes with. At times you don't even get access to main shares. The company offering the BBBEE deal is basically just providing the loan, and and any dividends must first pay up the debt. The discounted share price is countered by the debt that needs to be paid back, and missing out on dividends. Does not seem very worthwhile on paper for small time investors who likely do not have a tax free account, and are nowhere close to maxing their RA yet, and perhaps only trying to learn about the financial markets. What's different about the BarloWorld deal is that it's a sale and lease back agreement, and with guaranteed cash flows, the debt might be paid up quicker and value realised perhaps around 5 to 10 years. I just would like to hear you weigh-in, especially for people like me who could still put in money into Tax Free savings and/or RA. I am still young and not yet high earning, but I don't have any debt. As much as my financial principles say first look at ETFs in Tax Free, the urge of not letting such an opportunity go is peeking my interest. We reference Craig Gradidge's excellent BBBEE Power Hour in this discussion. Moya This will sound clichéd, but you guys have totally altered the way I view money and financial advisors (sneaky little shits). I'm a medic, recently qualified specialist at age 33. With all this education I was schooled in finance by my junior/minion at work. With the hierarchy in the medical fraternity you can imagine how this felt. He introduced me to ETFs,TFSAs and the Fat Wallet podcast. My mom recently retired when I came across all this new info. She was a professional nurse and her retirement fund was the government “dinosaur” pension fund. Her fund has paid out the ⅓ (she still refuses to disclose how much it is regardless of how much I flaunt this new knowledge) and the remaining 2/3 into a living annuity that pays her monthly. She wants to invest a big bulk of that ⅓. She anticipates being around for more than 20 years, my gran died at 102, so it's understandable. What products would you suggest for that money? Gregg Base – Emergency Fund – 40% Next tier – ETFs and Bonds – 35% Top tier – Equities – 25% Do I need to sell some of my equities to free up cash to do the rebalancing – I could take some profits from some equities and also sell some of the losers? What would you advise? How do I invest directly into Inflation-linked Government Bonds where the maturity period of that bond is in line with when I want to retire - for example a Govt Bond that matures in 20 years time? Is this a wise investment as part of diversification? Is it better to invest into a bond ETF as opposed to directly into the bond – what is the difference? Darren I want to plan for certain savings goals, like yearly veterinary council fees, car maintenance, local holiday trips and overseas holidays. Let's say I would like to save R1000/month in total for all of the above savings goals together. Do I buy different ETFs for each different goals or do I take the R1000 and split it between different ETFs. I feel it is quite overwhelming choosing them? Boitomelo I will most likely continue with the Ashburton 1200 only or maybe add a local one as well and have only 2 ETFs. In my current EE normal account, I have the Ashburton 1200 and the Satrix Divi Plus. What do you guys think of that ETF? I have been wondering if I should swap it for the Satrix Top 40 or just leave the Ashburton and sell out the DIVI. Pierre Over the last year I've closed unnecessary bank accounts, halved my monthly contribution to a managed collective investment scheme, run by my financial advisor, and I am now investing it myself in an ETF portfolio via Easy Equities. I've also moved my TFSA from my financial advisor's product to Easy Equities. I manage my tax better and I have a hands-on approach when it comes to my personal and business affairs, instead of just leaving it to “the professionals”. I've been thinking about moving my RA from Discovery to 10X to decrease fees. I raised the issue with my advisor and received a response that I couldn't make head or tail of, except that I shouldn't move. Armed with the knowledge from the Fat Wallet Show, I scrutinised my policy documents and came up with the following: I actually have 2 RAs! (never knew that) The first is called the Discovery Retirement Optimiser RA. I started contributing in March 2017 when I was 34 (please don't freak out, I built up a sizeable GEPF pension while I was doing in-service training). Discovery reports that the Internal rate of return with their built-in benefits since I started contributing has been 5.21%. Without their benefits has been 4.08%. The TER on this investment is 1.92% and transaction costs are 0.18%, so total investment charge is 2.1%. I suspect my financial advisor must also take a fee, but he's been beating around the bush to tell me. The gimmicks: if I match my monthly RA contribution to my monthly Discovery Life insurance policy premium, then Discovery say they'll pay me back an Accrued Life Plan Optimiser which is equal to my insurance premiums paid up to 65. This will be paid back in 10 annual payments over 10 years after retirement. So far, I stand to get just under R50 000 back over 10 years after 65 (if I purchase a Discovery Retirement Income Plan at retirement). Discovery reports that an early exit fee will be just under R15 000, and of course you lose the Accrued Life Plan Optimiser. The second RA is called the Discovery Core RA. I invested a lump sum of R100,000 in Feb 2017. The policy is now worth just under R110,000. The Discovery reported internal rates of return with and without benefits are similar to the first RA, as are the fees. The bells and whistles: Discovery “gives” you a Boost Accelerator of 20% of your investment to use to pay your administration fees. This Boost Accelerator diminishes by R2 for every R1 admin fees paid. When the policy reaches 10 years, Discovery will pay you what's left. I have just over R14 000 at the moment left after 3 years of admin fees — by my reckoning Discovery and I will be “quits” in 10 years, so I won't see a cent of the Boost Accelerator, but I would have scored on fees. Again, I'm sure my financial advisor is claiming some kind of fee, but I don't know what. Kristia will understand my feeling of "Is die kool die sous werd?" If I take the knock and move the Discovery Retirement Optimiser RA to 10X, I'll be able to catch up the losses in fees before retirement and don't have to worry about matching my life insurance premium, blah blah. I'll keep the Discovery Core RA, because I don't pay fees, and threaten my financial advisor to take my business elsewhere if he doesn't tell me exactly what his fee for this policy is. Would you agree? Brecht Would it maybe be better to make the policy paid up and just leave it and then open up a new one or is it still worth moving it? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 14th February 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Hello to our newest Patreon members...EXECUTIVE PRODUCER CRAIG COLES and JUAN GONZALEZ   Thank you for your email Marco Mascarello who sent me a picture as he walked past a Tesla Model 3 at Schipol Airport. He said it was a US version without the CCS plug.   Hi to Karthic who has noted that I-PACE deliveries have gone down from 3000 to 1000 in January in the Netherlands.   And a note for European listeners to the podcast. I was playing on the Renault Zoe configurator and the Q90 has been discontinued, that was the version which charged at 43kW. So now the only option for a new one is the R110 - either in Dynamique trim or S Trim. As I always say, if you want a new or used one check out Will Adams at DSG in Morecambe in the UK, and for used ones look up EV Nick who knows them inside out.   WHY TESLA'S MODEL X WAS THE FIRST SUV TO RECEIVE A PERFECT CRASH TEST RATING "Unlike most SUVs which tend to roll over with ease, the Model X continues to return to an upright position. Here's why the Model X was the first SUV to receive a perfect crash test rating. When it comes to vehicle safety, size matters. So it's not uncommon for SUVs to be generally safer than your standard sedan. However, they tend to have one big shortcoming. Rollovers." says Business Insider: "Since the Model X is an electric vehicle, there's no need for mechanical components in the hood of the car. This allows for a much larger crumple zone to absorb energy from a frontal crash. It also has specially-made side sills that absorb energy in addition to its rigid side pillars. These features help reduce the force exerted on passengers and increases their protection. "   https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-model-x-perfect-safety-crash-test-rating-2019-2   FRENCH ELECTRIC CAR MARKET GREW 138% IN JANUARY "The French plug-in car market took home 4,210 registrations in January — +78% year over year (YoY). Fully electric models jumped 138%, their highest growth rate in over 2 years, while plug-in hybrids remained in the positive as well — +14%." reports Jose Pontes for Clean Technica: "Looking at January best sellers, the Renault Zoe registration uptick continues (+136% YoY!). With 1,496 units, it landed #29 on the mainstream market. But the real events were the Kia Niro EV (149 units) and the Hyundai Kona EV (147) performances, both winning top 10 spots." In the comments Maarten says: "Renault looks like it is starting to produce the Zoe in volume, thanks to the factory upgrade last autumn (220/day => 440/day). Next month start of Model 3 deliveries, market going crazy"   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/02/12/french-electric-car-market-grew-138-in-january-cleantechnica-report/   SUBARU'S FIRST EUROPEAN HYBRIDS WILL BE SHOWN IN GENEVA "Subaru is adding electrification to its iconic boxer engines and will show off the technology for the first time at this year's Geneva Motor Show." reports the excellent Motor1.com: "Last year, Subaru introduced the Crosstrek Hybrid. The plug-in hybrid is currently only available in the U.S. Two new models equipped with "'e-Boxer" engines will be presented at the show – it's not clear what they will be yet. Subaru also hasn't revealed whether the cars will be plug-in hybrids or a full hybrid system."   https://www.motor1.com/news/305127/subaru-hybrids-2019-geneva-show/   DHL LAUNCHES ELECTRIC DELIVERY VEHICLES ACROSS NEW ZEALAND From listener Rakesh Shah a story about DHL deliveries. "Delivery provider DHL Express has added three electric vehicles to its New Zealand fleet, with the aim of reducing all logistics-related emissions to net zero by 2050." reports InsideRetail: "The vehicles, which will be used for pick-up and delivery services across Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington, are expected to reduce CO2 emissions by about 80 per cent. The vehicles have been partly funded by the New Zealand Government through its Low Emissions Vehicles Contestables Fund, which seeks to expand the use of electric vehicles and other low emissions technology in the transport space."   https://insideretail.co.nz/2019/02/13/dhl-launches-electric-delivery-vehicles-across-new-zealand   DRUID TRIES TO CAST A SPELL WITH NEW SORCERER MOTORCYCLES Sabrina at Ride Apart.com brings up the next story: "New-to-the-market Druid launched its very first motorcycle—the Sorcerer, built on the Prophet platform - The model will be available in a hybrid variant, half electric magic, half petrol-fuelled brawn, as well as in a fully electric version.  According to the company’s Website, all we know about the Sorcerer XEV is that it will produce 150 horsepower.   https://www.rideapart.com/articles/305263/druid-sorcerer-hybrid-electric-motorcycle/   PRESIDENT MACRON TO UNVEIL PLAN TO GIVE EUROPE'S ELECTRIC BATTERY INDUSTRY A JOLT "France will invest 700 million euros ($790 million) over the next five years into projects to boost the European electric car battery industry and reduce its carmakers' reliance on dominant Asian rivals, said French presidency officials." according to Business Insider: "In a speech to the Paris-based International Organisation of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers later on Wednesday, President Emmanuel Macron will unveil his strategy to help the French car industry fend off competition on electric vehicles (EV) and autonomous cars from Asian and U.S. tech giants. The plan comes after Germany in November set aside 1 billion euros to support battery cell production to reduce dependence on Asian suppliers and shore up jobs at home that may be at risk from the shift away from combustion engines. French officials said the two European countries will work on Franco-German initiatives, at a time when their countries' carmakers are waking up to the threats posed from relying on Chinese suppliers in an age of international trade wars."   HONDA REVEALS FIRST GLIMPSE AT INTERIOR OF ELECTRIC VEHICLE PROTOTYPE BOUND FOR GENEVA From Honda: "Honda has revealed an interior image of its new compact electric vehicle prototype. The interior is designed to create a warm and engaging atmosphere inspired by the Urban EV Concept launched at 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. The driver interface shown in the image features a full-width dashboard with clean design elements and intuitive user focused technology. The prototype version of the electric vehicle will be unveiled on 5 March at 2019 Geneva Motor Show." CNET says: "While the gauge cluster only shows battery-charging status as we zoom in, it's the right side of the dashboard that deserves our attention. The style of the system is similar to Honda's current telematics, featuring gray tiles dashed with color to help delineate content. But unlike current Honda infotainment displays, this one is large enough to have tiles on both the left and right sides. The teaser shows off the EV menus, including charge status and charge scheduling, as well as schedules for heating or cooling the cabin prior to departure. It's faint, but you can also see a set of climate controls just underneath what few physical buttons exist on the dashboard, and they look pretty close to the controls seen in other modern Hondas. The buttons above that control the infotainment system, and yes, a volume knob is accounted for. There's also a single button that appears to put the car in Park, but I don't see any button for Drive."   https://hondanews.eu/gb/en/cars/media/pressreleases/161767/honda-reveals-first-glimpse-at-interior-of-electric-vehicle-prototype-bound-for-geneva   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/honda-ev-prototype-geneva-dashboard-teaser/   THE USED CARS THAT WILL SAVE YOU THE MOST OVER NEW CARS IN 2019 "More often than not a pre-owned model will offer more value than a new one, since it’s already taken the depreciation hit. While some cars don’t quite suffer from the same drop as others, a new study from iSeeCars.com reveals the vehicles with the most dramatic savings versus their new counterparts in 2019." according to Jalopnik today: "A used Nissan Leaf will be, on average, 40 percent cheaper with an average savings of $13,524."   https://jalopnik.com/the-used-cars-that-will-save-you-the-most-over-new-cars-1832587817   ABB SPEEDS UP POLISH SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT WITH SUPPLY OF DC FAST CHARGERS PKN ORLEN has signed a general agreement for the supply of ABB’s next generation DC fast charging stations for electric cars – Terra 54. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. And welcome to the party our newest member of the gang – and Producer of the show on Patreon - EDUARD PERTÍÑEZ   WHAT CAR? NAMES KIA-ENIRO AS 'CAR OF THE YEAR'   One of the curiosities of any car of the year award is how forward looking they are, and so yes it's amusing that a car which has delivered less than 1,000 in Europe can officially be the best car. But let's not understate the importance of a major magazine putting an electric car top of the pile.   So I'll start with the big one, the overall car of the. The Kia e-Niro.   As the editor Steve Huntingford says: "there are almost 4000 variations of around 400 cars listed in the data section at the back of this magazine, but after 12 months of testing we've whittled them down to the best in each class, with one of those standing out above all others as our 2019 Car Of The Year".   So why did it win? They said: "The BMW 3 SERIES would have made a worthy overall winner, having overcome a former Car of the Year to take class honours, while the Citroën Berlingo and Cupra Ateca were also strong contenders. However, those cars have had the misfortune to be launched in the same year as Kia’s game-changing e-Niro. Put simply, the e-Niro beats its rivals via knockout rather than on points, because it’s the first sensibly priced electric car that can fit into most people’s lives. Its huge real-world range helps, allowing you to get to where you’re going without any fear that you’ll end up stranded by the roadside. But it also makes a very practical family car, comes loaded with luxuries and strikes just the right balance of comfort and composure.  In short, the Kia e-Niro is a stunning achievement."   Winner - Less Than £30,000 Renault Zoe: "Our 2017 ELECTRIC Car of the Year remains a compelling proposition two years on – and that’s some achievement, given the pace at which things are moving in this class. Chief among the Renault Zoe’s appeal is still its low price. But unlike other sub-£25k pure electric options, such as the Smart Fortwo EQ, you don’t have to put up with a feeble range. In fact, in our Real Range tests, the Zoe outperformed many much pricier options by managing 146 miles on a full charge. You can opt to buy the Zoe outright (that’s the ‘i’ model), but we reckon you’re better off buying just the car and leasing the battery from Renault. Why? Well, you’ll pay a much smaller up-front cost, and you’ll also benefit from a lifetime battery warranty, so you won’t need to worry about the potential of a huge bill in the future if the car’s range starts to tail off due to battery degradation.  We’d go for the R110 model over the Q90 version for three reasons: it’s a bit cheaper and faster, plus you get a slightly longer range. The only downside is it’ll take you 1hr 40min to recharge from 0-80% via a 43kW rapid charger; the Q90 can manage that in 1hr 5min."   Winner More THan £60,000 - Jaguar I-PACE EV400 S: "Tesla has made this price point its own over the past five years, so it’s a measure of Jaguar’s achievement that it has managed to topple the American brand at the first time of trying. The Jaguar I-Pace has all the ingredients you’d expect from a £64,000 Jaguar – and more. It’s fantastic to drive, unnervingly quick (0-60mph takes 4.5sec) and has an interior that’s far more impressive to look at and touch than those in Jaguar’s regular models. It also delivers a better real-world range than Tesla’s Model S 75D and is cheaper to buy. If you want your I-Pace dripping with luxuries (and we wouldn’t blame you), SE or even HSE trim is worth a look, but entry-level S trim makes the most sense. You don’t need to bother with optional air suspension, although you’ll probably want to pick a couple of creature comforts from the options list. Yes, it’s still pricey, and yes, it’s a shame there’s no Tesla-style 120kW Supercharger network to recharge your I-Pace in 30-odd minutes. But it is compatible with the new 100kW charging points that are just starting to appear, so an 80% charge within 45 minutes will soon be possible."   Winner Best Hybrid - Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Winner Plug In Hybrid = Volvo XC90 T8   Winner What Car? Reader Award 2019 - "Judging by the crowds that packed Honda’s stand at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show, the Urban EV was a popular car from its very first outing – so popular, in fact, that Honda confirmed a production version of the concept before the dust had even settled. What Car? readers clearly can’t get enough of it, either, because the Urban EV garnered almost eight times as many votes as our second-placed car. Put simply, it’s by far the car you’re most excited about seeing in 2019. And so you should be, because the Urban EV is shaping up to be a true game-changer for Honda. It’s the brand’s first electric car to be sold in Europe, and with it being shorter than its Jazz stablemate yet potentially even more spacious inside, as well as having an electric range of around 155 miles, it will be ideally suited to city streets.  There’s a large digital screen for the instruments and infotainment system, plus smaller screens that show feeds from two cameras mounted on the car’s exterior in place of door mirrors."   DAIMLER ADD BATTERY FACTORY IN POLAND In the course of the electric initiative Mercedes-Benz Cars will build a battery factory at the polish site in Jawor and thus extend the global battery production network of up to nine factories. Markus Schäfer, Member of the Divisional Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Cars: "“We will electrify the complete portfolio until 2022 and will be able to offer in each segment various electrified alternatives to our customers. This includes more than ten pure electric vehicles. We will produce batteries on our own, what we consider a significant success factor in the era of electric mobility. After the production of high-tech engines, we will establish additional future technology in Poland. The battery factory in Jawor is the second largest investment at this new Mercedes-Benz site.” With the construction of a battery factory on the existing ground at the site approximately 300 new jobs will be created. The battery assembly will be equipped with cutting-edge technologies. The series production of batteries for vehicles of the product and technology brand EQ is slated at the beginning of the next decade. They say: "Daimler is buying the cells on the world market and is instructing the suppliers to produce based on special specifications. In this way, the company is securing itself the best possible technology. With the purchase of battery cells for more than 20 billion euros, the company is establishing the preconditions for the consistent change towards an electrical future"   https://media.daimler.com/marsMediaSite/en/instance/ko/New-site-in-the-global-battery-production-network-Mercedes-Benz-Cars-to-build-battery-factory-in-Jawor-Poland.xhtml   AUDI PROVIDING 50 E-TRON SHUTTLES AT WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM "Audi, as the exclusive shuttle partner for World Economic Forum in Davos since 1987, is providing a fleet of 50 e-tron electric cars for shuttle service. This year World Economic Forum takes place on January 22 to 25." reports Mark Kane at InsideEVs.com: "The cars are powered by green electricity, through specially installed charging station with IONITY DC fast chargers and AC charging stands. On top of that is a 1.14 MWh/700 kW energy storage system in the form of mobile charging containers."   https://insideevs.com/audi-50-e-tron-shuttles-world-economic-forum-in-davos/   TESLA ROLLS BACK SUPERCHARGER PRICE INCREASES TO APPEASE OWNERS Staying with InsdieEVs: "According to Electrek’s analysis, Tesla hoped to increase average pricing for Supercharging by some 33 percent as a whole. This number is not specific to all markets, since the automaker planned to adjust pricing based on local electricity costs, as well as area-based demand." says Steven Loveday: "Some were even going so far as to do the math, which showed that Supercharging could end up costing nearly as much as gassing up in some markets. Additionally, charging at some other non-Tesla stations could be cheaper. The truth of the matter is if people cancel their reservations due to this adaptation, Tesla could be in a much more dire situation. So, the money gained by increasing rates could easily be lost due to decreasing sales. Obviously, Tesla took notice of the contention on social media and forums, likely crunched some numbers, and decided that this plan is not going to work. Less than a week later, the automaker decided to dial back the price hike by some 10 percent worldwide."   https://insideevs.com/tesla-rolls-back-supercharger-price-increases/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Sorting out money between partners can be fraught, but it's a walk in the park compared to parents and siblings. We spend our formative years trying to secure the love and acceptance of the very people who we now have to say "no" to, which is why we are Money Enemy Number One. Your best chance at success is substituting emotions for numbers. If you are the person your family looks to for financial support (and you have no moral objections to helping out), the first number you should care about is what you can afford. This doesn't mean how much you have left over, but how much you are willing to give. You also have the option of paying directly for fixed expenses and letting them figure out the rest. Alternatively you can offer a cash amount, walk away and fight every urge in your body to give more if they run out. You don't have to say no to your family if you don't want to, but you are allowed to have boundaries. If all else fails, ask yourself what you would do if your kid made the same request. Devon's mom told him he'll have to take care of her his whole life. After paying off her debts, renovating her home and countless budget discussions, he's losing hope. I have had endless budget sit downs and fiscal meetings with my mother to try reign in her expenses, but after a few months the old habits come back. She's very good at convincing herself whatever she buys is absolutely necessary. I listened to your podcast about talking to your partner, but I find having a talk with my mother far more difficult and emotional. Her house is paid off (just levy, water, electricity, medical aid and living expenses are needed) but she spends over R10,000 on groceries on just her and my sister at home plus clothes and other non-essentials, plus having a domestic worker twice a week and a gardener for a small garden and a pack of 5 dogs which obviously need to be fed (I tried everything to stop her at just having 3 max). How would you suggest approaching this firmly enough that it actually does stick with her and leads her to actually taking action to cut expenses? In essence how do you get this message across to someone doing their utmost to stay dependent on others to avoid the responsibility of their own financial position. I feel like I have tried absolutely everything and have spent so much energy and effort that I am at my breaking point. Emile Market commentators will say they would only buy a stock at a particular price level. For example, stock A is expensive at R100 but fair value at R80. Is this merely a reflection of the rand value of the P/E at different levels i.e. R100=P/E of 20 and R80=P/E of 16? Subscribe to our RSS feed here. What is TFSAs offer the best returns? Can I expect more than e.g. a 32 day notice deposit or a 24 month fixed deposit somewhere? As far as I remember, the TFSAs have a lot of red-tape w.r.t. what to invest in and how much risk these funds may take on. Will this not mean lower returns?   Marina's twin sister introduced her to the show. She has a question about ETFs. Stealthy mentioned that the smart beta indices try to outperform the market and rarely do so, and that is why he sticks with vanilla indices. She also read a Moneyweb article about the SPIVA report. Some are of the opinion that active funds rarely outperform the market but passive trackers can? What is your opinion on the matter? If active funds with competitive fees were to become available in the future, would you buy them? Lars Kroijer Investing Demystified series: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXy71rkGuCjXLg9N8zowwUpXCYfBcMJFK Frank sent a link to a podcast called How It Began, where they discuss the stock market after episode 123. https://itunes.apple.com/za/podcast/how-it-began-a-history-of-the-modern-world/id1221558103?mt=2&i=1000389611474 Mpilo wants to know what listed property is. They also want to know what a mutual property fund is. Psychedelic Nerd wants to double-check that they understand CGT: If I invested R5,000,000 into the market, and now it is worth R10,000,000 . I decide to withdraw R400,000 (i.e. a 4% drawdown rate) to live on for the year. Half of this (R200,000) is capital gains. So, after the R40,000 CGT allowance, I am due to pay CGT on 40% of R160,000, which is R64,000. I have the 2018 income tax free allowance of R75,750, which leaves me with no taxable income! So I keep the full R400,000. In this scenario, the CGT mentioned here is the only income for the year. Does this scenario sound right to you or am I getting some steps wrong? (If this is correct, over time I guess it will change as the percentage of the annual drawdown that is capital gains will probably become higher.) They also want to know what I mean by “cash” savings and if it's a good idea to have an emergency fund in a money market account. Ivan made Kay a spreadsheet to calculate her tax liability in a year. Download the tax calculator here Kiril has a hella fancy car. He wants to know if he should speed up his repayments. I currently have an emergency fund, maxed out my TFSA for the year, contribute to a provident fund through work, and have zero debt except my fancy car. Whether owning a fancy car is a good idea is not part of this question. My designated installment is R7600, which I've upped to R8000. Should I increase this to R8600, and put in some sizeable lumps sums, eg. My tax refund? My interest rate is 10.5%, but Tito's jitters indicate this might rise in the coming year. Please, I'd really appreciate your advice. Promise wants to know who we prefer for TFSAs. Pierre If I sell out of a fund and incur a 360k capital gain which I will be taxed on, can I invest 360k straight into an RA and thus pay no CGT? No - but you can contribute 27.5% of your profit to your RA for the tax break. First point RISK = REWARD, pretty basic if you take more risk your return can be higher (or lower), take a small risk and you make a small return. Bonds have a very little risk so you get a small return BUT you are very sure you don't lose your investment. This is called the investment risk pyramid. Cash (no risk) Money on deposit in a bank which as a guarantee if a bank goes bust Bonds (low risk) 1)US treasury bonds 2)Developed markets 3)Emerging Markets Within each of these 3 sectors you get municipal and corporate debt too ETFs / Unit trust (medium risk) The more diversified the ETF/fund lower your risk should be, ie if you buy an ETF with only 30 shares and they are all banks it is less risky than buying one bank share but riskier than buying an ETF with 1200 shares in it across many sectors. Shares Within the share universe you get more and less "volatile" shares. Volatility means how a share price moves day to day around its average price over time in laymen terms. So a stock that is speculative like saying your Blue Label group moves in massive swings, something like a property stock which is run by a well managed reputable outfit which owns shopping centres and hard assets and receives their rental income from these properties every month will have a stable income and below volatility. Worst comes to worst the assets (buildings) are sold on their own and the shareholders in the stock can get their cash back. The assets are easy to value. Stocks are theoretically priced by their earnings, how much we are willing to pay for those earnings is called the price-earnings ratio, higher PE the more willing people are to pay for its earnings. Sometimes stock prices make very little sense. Example - Tesla, we all love Elon Musk, he is trying to change the world, he has very big ideas, he has shown potential BUT his company is not making that much money yet. People believe his dream and keep buying Tesla shares thus it has a very high PE. Very low earnings and high PE. Every sector has its own go to PE. Banks in SA generally below 12. Leverage / Speculative Funds/Small business/Bitcoin Risky stuff, could lose everything or double your money, need a lot of research and gut feel to know what's what. Not for the amateurs, no matter how good the tip was your buddy gave you or you ever heard at the gym. Ok so that how risk is priced in instruments next layer of risk is the country risk, it is generally expected that: US least risky (now) Developed markets (UK, Japan, Germany etc) Emerging markets (South Africa, Turkey, Russia etc) Junk Markets (Zim, Venezuela etc) Each of these countries has their own risk profile and within each you can buy a bond (least risky for that country) or you can buy a share (risky for that country) . If you buy a bond in say South Africa you might expect the same return as a medium risky share in a big developed market. Theoretically speaking, my idea to get the concept across. The risk is everything, the risk is priced in return, for a stock that return is measured in its earnings for a bond/cash in its return. So back to your story, why did my ETFs in SA do nothing but when the market fell I still fell along with it, should I have been hedged through my diversification? There are 2 parts to the answer. 1) Naspers makes up roughly a quarter of our Top40, Naspers is basically a company holding a share called Tencent, Tencent is basically the google plus facebook of China. It's gone up in a straight line for last 5 years. Dragging our TOP40 with it. If you take out Naspers/Tencent our markets has done sub9% maybe less... Why is that you might ask, unemployment, bad ANC policies, international investment firms selling South Africa as a brand, the land appropriation bill is a massive massive issue, firstly our banks are being sold off more intensely than I have ever seen in my 15 year career, you can get a big 4 bank stock now at a PE of 8 (side note at this rate it will be more tax efficient to buy a bank stock and get a better dividend yield on your money than the bank can offer you on the interest rate and the div yield is tax free!!). Banks own the bonds on the properties the ANC want to appropriate thus banks go to zero, the market has decided to rerate the risk on banks and the price went down, more risk bigger move in this case down.   Tech stocks have rerated after an incredible run the last few years, Tencent halved and with that the price of Naspers and thus the TOP40 or JSE and your ETFs. Buying the Top40 or DTOP is not a good diversification. I'll say that again, buying the TOP40 is not a good diversification. 2) The second part to the answer is more interesting, think of all the capital in the world flowing around like water freely. When there is a lot of capital it sloshes around the world, builds up at the riskiest places and even forms bubbles, think bitcoin. When is capital cheap? When interest rates are low, because anyone can borrow a lot and do with all that money what they want to. When was capital cheap, since the 08 crash, the Fed and other central banks took interest rates to ZERO percent, all that cash has been sloshing around the world and found new homes in the riskier assets and countries like you know who SOUTH AFRICA. For the last year or so the Fed has been slowly increasing its lending rate to try and normalize markets (or their market among things). The effect is like a giant sponge in America sucking up all the excess money they were out there in riskier assets. Starting at the riskiest and going down the pyramid to the least risky. So in our case, we are an emerging market check, we have are buyers of an ETF that's listed over equity check, we have bad economic policies check, there is talk of taking away peoples assets which banks have bonds overcheck. And there you are, your ETFs have rerated in risk to the new reality. I don't want to make you feel worse but that return you lose you have is in Rands, as we discussed above, a South African Rand bank account is riskier than a USA bank account, thus the rand is also being sold and more people are buying dollars. (if you can earn 3% risk-free in the US why buy an SA bank account and only make say 6% with all our inherent risk too). I have been a holder of 4 "hedge" funds over around 10 years. Over a decade plus they have been the standouts and I managed to get in quite early and trusted each of those outfits as I work in the industry and am well aware of what they do. That being said, you pay through your ears for this good return these guys get, there are also down times. I decided at the beginning of the year to start liquidating investments in these funds down to 25% and buying ETFs listed on the JSE but in foreign exchange and international markets. I like and have moved into Ashburton world bond index in USD, NASDAQ listed by Satrx, GLODIV dividend aristocrats international, SYG500 SP 500. All of these ETFs hedge me against any South African and Rand risk. My thinking is, I live in South Africa, I own my house in South Africa, I earn Rands in South Africa. South Africa is a tiny country on the tip of Africa, do you think if you approached someone in Japan or America and tell them you think it is a good diversification to buy TOP40 index ETF in a tiny country on the South tip of Africa. No ways! Buying SA listed ETFs like TOP40 ect is not being diversified, you are actually taking on a lot of risks, we now have the freedom and products to buy cheap, international ETFs on the JSE which gets you out of local currency, buy them and buy as many as you can. I wrote about how I plan to approach the maintenance to my new house in last week's newsletter. I said I'll probably under-budget. Dave had a great point about that. Your new project/s made me think of one of my favourite Project Management lecture points - don't stress the accuracy, stress the completeness.  If you budget R100 and it runs to R110 you are 10% out, but if you don't even put the item in the budget then you are in trouble. Quinton wants to run his ETF strategy past us. These are ETFs he's buying in addition to his RA and TFSA. I don't want to be to active as an investor, I'd like to select shares, then contribute monthly from now until retirement. He's looking at Satrix Top 40, Satrix S&P500 and the Ashburton Global 1200 My idea is to buy each monthly. I am a minimalist and like keeping things simple, but also don't want to invest in the wrong portfolios, or be too diversified. If you think this is a good strategy, would you invest equal amounts into each or spread it more offshore (E.g. Satrix S&P500 and Ashburton 1200 = say 80%) and Satrix top 40 = 20%? I have received dividends in my TFSA account now, and was thinking on using those dividends to apply the same logic. What are your thoughts on the Satrix Emerging Markets, Nasdaq 100, or MSCI World index. Should one be considering any of these?

A friend recently discovered a financially dependent parent had a huge amount of credit card debt. This revelation turned the dinner table conversation to the financial health of our parents. Of the seven of us, only two weren't worried about their parents' financial future. Naturally we proceeded to drink heavily.  I find it much harder to speak to family members about money than to anyone else. Our parents managed to raise functional, financially secure members of society. After that significant achievement it can't be easy to admit that you need help from the sprouts you raised. I hope this week's episode will provide a glimmer of hope if you happen to find yourself in a similar situation with your parents. Nothing can be done about the late hour, we admit, but if you can find a way to speak to your parent about their situation (I haven't yet worked this out), you might just be able to find a creative solution. Ruben asked: My father is turning 60 next year with no pension/investments or even a house. I estimate he could work for another 5-10 years at his own business. How can I invest to help him with income for retirement? Twitter Daniele asked: I pay my mom rent. Should I put it in a TFSA for her instead? She has a company pension fund so this would supplement it. I am having a hard time convincing her that it is still a good idea to invest in a TFSA even though she is nearing retirement.  She works for a bank's investment arm. Would they allow her to open up an account with another provider like EasyEquitites? The TFSA and UT fund options (no ETFs) for her bank are pathetic (fees). Get Down Adam  I am 32, I graduated as a doctor two years ago. Financial people with various levels of qualification and pizazz came to sell us their products. The bottom line was that you had to have started investing at 24 (which was the age of my peers). I was already 6 years behind so I went into panic mode.  Two years into the real working world again, I've paid off my student loan of R110,000. I only have about R60,000 left on my car loan. I have sadly given up on buying coffees, and I'm back to that instant coffee shit. I limit my spending as far as possible. 22seven is my most used app.  Because I didn't understand what was happening when I started my investment journey, I signed up for a Liberty RA investing in Liberty Medium Equity (C) as well as a Stanlib Tax Free Global Equities Feeder (A). I recently bought the Coronation Market Plus Fund simply because they had a promotional sign up bonus of 10% which I thought couldn't hurt.  I own a flat with my sister (which our parents bought for us). We rent it out and receive about R6,000 income a month from that. Recently we have been putting R500 a month into Easy Equities and playing around with ETFs. I have tiny amounts in: Cloud Atlas AMI RealEstate exSA Ashburton Global 1200 Satrix Top40 Stanlib S&P500 Stanlib Global Government Bonds I also have fuck you money shares/FSR in: Netcare (what a disaster) Montauk Energy Capitec We also have some cash stashed in an ABSA fixed deposit to cover maintenance etc.  My own emergency funds are modest for now, but I'm building in a 32 day fixed deposit in FNB.  Am I playing with too many variables? Are there too many ETFs?  How do I know if I have saved enough?  What's the difference between building a portfolio and just sommer buying shit and hoping you're right? Please fix me, or at the very least tell me I can drink decent coffee again. Frank shared a great graph he found of a married couple's shared finances. I'll include a link in the show notes. There's a line item in the graph called “blackmagicfuckery” which is how they account for money that fell through the cracks.  Jorge wants to know if he can withdraw profits from his tax-free account without affecting his lifetime limit. Jon-Luke is a freelancer in his 40s. He has no debt except for a house he'd like to renovate. He works in TV when there is work, but the industry has been going through a dry spell. He had money saved for renovations on his house, but he's had to use all of that last year when work dried up. He aims for an emergency fund of 8% of his portfolio, but he's currently sitting at just over 2.5%.  In the next few years I can envision a bumpy ride in my chosen profession.  The probability is high that I may need to draw my emergency fund down again it won't last as long as I need it to.  Should I do what I would have done in the past and go into my overdraft and credit cards or should I draw out of my Share Portfolio? Keep in mind that this would be for short term periods of 3 to 9 months. My instinct would be to leave my shares alone and give them the chance to grow. I am also on a strict plan to downscale my spending and to save more… My goal is to be saving 25% of my earnings by the end of next year, but getting there is a bit of a delicate process especially considering the current conditions in the Film Industry.  Also I am loathe to sell my current house until I've had a chance to do the renovations I planned. There's some money to be made here for sure! G-Boi has taken his expensive RA by the horns. I've moved my RA from Sanlam to EE and opened a TFSA with EE. Should I max out my TFSA, then contribute to my RA? Or equally contribute to both my RA and TFSA. You and Simon made me feel so shit about the RA trap, at least I made the move to EE so that I can control it and don't have to pay 4% Ter every year. Luvuyo wants to know if we think rewards programmes are worthwhile.  Do you think certain rewards points is to your benefit financially? I have an Investec Account which gives decent rewards points (obviously not as great as ebucks that everyone tells me about), a Dischem, Clicks, Woolies & a The Entertainer account and I only buy clothing through a family member that works at a clothing store at a massive discount.  Do you think that using discount and reward offerings can materially affect keeping lifestyle costs low so that you free up funds to invest or am I just a cheapskate that gets slightly marginal benefits from the above? Johannes wants to know if I'll do a spreadsheet on all the costs involved in purchasing a home. I'd be happy to do this if the purchase goes through. So far I've spent R453 on sectional title and title deed reports. If the home loan gets approved, I'll spend a further  R2,875 on an inspection. That brings me to R3,300 before anything has actually happened.

#110: Should I get married?

Subscribe to our RSS feed here. Subscribe or rate us in iTunes.   Marriage is a long-term commitment to build a life with someone else (among other things). A wedding is an expensive party. This week Dr. Woofington Von Barkshire wants to know if we think it's a good idea to spend money on an expensive wedding when you have debt and not very much money. We don't. I have to buy a ring of the engagement type due to the expectations of my 6yr girlfriend (the time we have been together, not her age). I don't think it's the right time to get engaged. But she is a year older than me and feels that is a life imperative to get engaged. I estimated the cost of a ring to be like R25,000. I need an emergency fund. I need to start saving for retirement. (RA and tax-free savings) I need to save for a wedding which I need to finance myself. Her parents are poor and my mother needs to save for retirement. She also has study debt (R110 000) and car debt (R120000). My options are: 1. Defer the engagement until I am in a financial position to afford a wedding. Save on the engagement ring insurance and earn interest on the cash (savings of R30 000). And endure the fights about not being married/engaged. 2. Sell all my shares and try to do a budget wedding. He has R45k in shares. 3. Get debt to finance the wedding. I hate this option. But it is an option. If I chose to defer engagement, should I sell all my shares and rather invest them in ETFs? Should I, instead of saving for wedding etc, assist my girlfriend in paying off her debt? Which will then quicker enable her to help me save for the wedding? Should one still get married, even though it is a bad financial decision? Win of the week: Roland made a commitment to paying off his debt. I am starting to pay off my debt and aim to make use of 2% of my increase to pay off more debt. I am planning to pay off one account and roll over that amount into the next account and so on. This is what I did. It's a great strategy because of the immediate feedback. Based on my calculations I should have all my debt excluding a car loan paid off by Jan 2019. Would it be best to pay off the car loan and close off all debt or should I keep some accounts to keep my credit score up? https://justonelap.com/podcast-should-i-save-or-pay-my-debt/ https://justonelap.com/podcast-upping-credit-score/ Justin sent a message about cutting his losses. At the end of the message he says, “It was great being able to type swear words. Sorry to Sean for the extra work!” A couple of years ago I started investing in shares. I was in my late twenties and having accumulated some money to invest I thought I would be brilliant at choosing my own stocks. I got input from the team at the trading desk, but mostly my own decisions. Two years later I'm not even dreaming about growth in the investment, and rather sitting at around 25% down. A large portion of this is due to Steinhoff (thanks Markus, you doos), but most of my shares are firmly placed on shit street. I have a knack of buying when shares are at their peak. I have done waaaaay more research and know that ETFs are best for me. If fancy private bank traders can't beat the market, it's a lag that I thought I could. But now I'm stuck with the predicament of actually realizing the loss. Does it make sense to take it on the chin, sell it all up and buy ETFs now, or should I ride the storm a bit? I would of course not like to sell at the bottom either! Some of the shares include: Mediclinic, aspen, Steinhoff PSG and Steinhoff African retail (GREAT combo!), reinet and Ascendis. I'll probably hold on to the Steinhoff just to keep me humble. But also - who are the madmen who would buy this share from me? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I know I am young and can at this stage afford the knock. But holy fuck id like to minimize it. Chris has a question about dividends tax on offshore investments within his TFSA. I managed to pay off my debts recently and now have an investment portfolio which still small but starting to grow. My current strategy centres on maxing out all saving incentives which SARS gives and thereby minimising the tax payable on my salary and investment returns. I'm currently able to put 27.5% of my salary into my company pension scheme and max out my tax free savings allowance every year. Any further savings is put into a global equity etf investment. I would like to increase the portion of my portfolio in global equity, however from a tax perspective, I believe it's most efficient to buy a top40 or local property tracker in your TFSA since you get the double bonus of no capital gain, and no dividends tax, whereas a global etf will still incur dividends tax abroad (I.e. in whatever country the underlying companies are registered in). Is this thinking correct, or shouldn't I be worried about foreign dividends tax in a tax free account? Note: my underlying assumption is that the top40 will return roughly the same as a global equity tracker in the very long term (20+ years). Jaco wants to know what we think about cows as an investment strategy. You can invest into a pregnant cow, a calf or a portion of a cow (I think this is called steak). You earn income from the sale of the calf and help cover its feeding, medical and insurance costs. You can pick on which farm do you want to raise your cow and it looks like you can even go and visit! I'm curious if anyone who listens to the podcasts is dabbling in this? It certainly makes much more sense than "investing" in bitcoin… This is from the Take Charge of Your Money blog: Invest in a calf (or in a portion of a calf if you cannot afford the full cost) Help it grow by paying an all inclusive fee for feed, insurance & veterinary expenses Share in the rewards. On maturity Livestock Wealth buys back the grown cow and you will receive an annual payout based on the collective sales on the farm. The current projected ROI (return on investment) is 12.4% and is fully explained in the FAQ page. You need to pay fees twice a year and receive a payout once a year. https://takechargeofyourmoney.blog/2018/05/14/holy-cow-what-an-investment/ Christoff made an excellent point about Margaret's question last week. She was worried about counterparty risk and the potential pitfalls and benefits of diversifying by supplier. As you and Simon stated, the probability of a big, well-known RA company to go bust is very small, plus your holdings there will just be moved to someone else to continue administering your investments. The one thing not mentioned was the sliding scale for fees by a lot of these RA providers. If you have all your investments at one specific company, you can end up with much lower fees (for example first million is at 1% annual cost, the next million is at 0.85%, etc) Rakgomo wants to know how to invest in ETFs. I want to invest in ETFs but I don't know where to get them, or even trade them. may I get some guidance in getting access to ETFs and where I can trade them?

Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Sunday 15th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.     POLESTAR 2 ELECTRIC WILL DEBUT AT GENEVA TO TAKE ON TESLA MODEL 3 On yesterday’s show I was reviewing my day at the Goodwood Festival Of Speed, where not only did the Polestar 1 make it's world debut on track, but also the time I spent with the production car on their stand. Clearly it lacks some green credentials because it's got a 2 litre petrol engine tied to those electric motors, albeit a very respectable 70 miles pure EV power. "The Polestar 2 will debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show as Volvo’s now standalone brand delivers an electric saloon car aimed at the Tesla Model 3." says Cars UK.net: "the Polestar 1 is only Polestar’s opening salvo, and every future Polestar will be a pure EV, starting with the Polestar 2 which, according to Evo, will debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Polestar say they want to pitch their offerings somewhere between Tesla and Porsche, but the Polestar 2 looks to be an electric saloon car built on Volvo’s CMA platform (the one underpinning the XC40 et al) and have a price range of £35-50k. Which seems like it’s aimed straight at the Model 3." Evo reports: "Polestar will certainly pursue its focus on driving dynamics with the Polestar 2, the company intent on positioning itself as an EV performance car brand that can deliver to customers who aren’t excited by the current crop of stylish and safe Volvos. Speaking to evo at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed, Polestar’s chief operating officer Jonathan Goodman revealed his intention that Polestar cars will always be ‘great looking cars that add a dimension, as far as Volvo is concerned, because they’ll be designed as driver’s cars"   http://www.carsuk.net/polestar-2-electric-saloon-will-debut-at-geneva-to-take-on-tesla-model-3/   ELON MUSK’S TALKS TO BLOOMBERG ABOUT LEARNING FROM MODEL 3 PRODUCTION Simon at Teslarati has picked out some key quotes from the Elon Musk interview with Bloomberg: "It’s been super-hard. Like there is for sure some permanent mental scar tissue here. But I do feel good about the months to come. I think the results will speak for themselves. To the best of my judgment, I do not think we have any future bet-the-company situations. We will still need to work hard and be vigilant and not be complacent because it is very difficult just to survive as a car company. But it will not be the same level of strain as getting to volume production of Model 3”. com were also picking one their highlights: ""We were huge idiots and didn't know what we were doing," Musk said in a recent interview with Bloomberg, referring to the massive production delays resulting from an over-reliance on robots on Tesla's assembly line. Musk and his team made a big bet that automation would help Telsa make more cars in a single month than it ever had before, only to have robots repeatedly fail, forcing the company to halt the entire production process to fix the problem. It's like you just took all the highways away from L.A. or something. Part of the problem is that the designing heads were naive about manufacturing," Musk said in the interview. "Just because we have something that works great in a simulation does not mean that it works great in reality."   NEXT-GENERATION RENAULT ZOE EXPECTED IN 2019 – UNVEILING THIS FALL? "There is a fair chance that this fall we will see the second-generation Renault ZOE (maybe at the Paris Motor Show in October)" reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs: "According to French sources, Renault will be retooling the Clio and ZOE factory in August to double the production output of ZOE to 440 copies a day from September on. First, Renault intends to introduce the next-generation Clio and it’s expected that in 2019 the all-new ZOE will hit the market. The Renault-flagship BEV potentially will be longer and bigger, but the battery pack (41 kWh) and electric motor (R110) are expected to remain the same at initial launch at least. The new feature will be DC fast charging using CCS Combo."   https://insideevs.com/renault-zoe-2-expected-2019-unveiling-paris/amp/   LEXUS BOSS WARNS EV PUSH COULD BE TOO SOON "Fully electric car technology is not ready for mass adoption, and nor is the environmental impact fully understood, Lexus president Yoshihiro Sawa believes." that's according to Jim Holder who's found this story for AutoCar: "Speaking at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which he is visiting for the first time, Sawa confirmed that the firm - in conjunction with parent company Toyota - is working on all types of powertrain, including full EV and hydrogen, but said that it would not leap into the market until the customer and environmental benefits were clear." He said: "“Pure EVs currently require a long charging time and batteries that have an environmental impact at manufacture and which degrade as they get older. And then, when cells need replacing, we have to consider plans for future use and recycling. It is a complex issue - much more complex than the current rhetoric perhaps suggests. I prefer to approach the future in a more honest way. If we are looking for the best solution it is my opinion that the best solution is not only EV; we must consider petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fuel cell. If we focus on EV only we will not provide the answers people need.”   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/motor-shows-goodwood-festival-speed/lexus-boss-warns-ev-push-could-be-too-soon   NEW YORK EPRIX: DI GRASSI WINS, VERGNE CROWNED CHAMPION Alex for motorsport.com reports on Formula E in New York: "Audi’s Lucas di Grassi won the first race of the New York Formula E double-header on Saturday, as Jean-Eric Vergne was crowned champion despite starting from the back of the grid."   TESLA WANT YOU TO BUY A PERFORMANCE MODEL 3 Tesla might not be anti selling the Model 3 now, but they are Upselling it. Elon Musk himself took to Twitter yesterday urging reservation holders to take the P3D for a test drive even if they weren’t planning on just getting the standard long range battery; he said "Whether you plan to buy a Dual Motor Performance Model 3 or not, take it for a test drive anyway. It’s like having pure fun jacked straight into your brain whenever you want. Plus he had news for the upgraded parts: "Performance version suspension is 1cm lower & has stronger brakes in upgrade package"   COMMUNITY Tweets and YouTube comments.   You can listen to all previous 180 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Tuesday 10th April 2018. AUDI E-TRON VISION GT When is a concept, not a concept? When is vapourware, not vapourware? The Audi e-tron Vision Gran Turismo was developed for virtual races on PS4, but now Audi is making the car a reality in conjunction with Formula E. You’ll first see it with the race in Rome this Saturday, April 14, deployed as a race taxi. Electric Vehicle News reports: “The customers and guests of the brand with the four rings will be able to experience Formula E’s city circuits as passengers in the Audi e-tron Vision Gran Turismo starting at the race in Rome (April 14). Employees at Audi’s pre-production center developed and produced this one-of-a-kind car within the space of just eleven months based on the example of the Audi e-tron Vision Gran Turismo from the “Gran Turismo” PlayStation game. The Audi e-tron Vision Gran Turismo has permanent all-wheel drive as well, the fully electric e-tron quattro all-wheel drive with variable power distribution. Three electric motors, each with output of 200 kW, propel the concept car. Two electric motors drive the rear axle and the third one the front axle, using individual components from the future Audi e-tron. System output is 600 kW (815 hp). With a curb weight of 1,450 kilograms the electric race car has a power to weight ratio of 1.78 kilograms per horsepower with ideal 50:50 percent weight distribution between the front and the rear axle. The Audi e-tron Vision Gran Turismo accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 2.5 seconds.” “This car incorporates numerous elements of our new design language such as the inverted single frame in the vehicle’s color that will be typical for our new e-tron models,” Marc Lichte, chief designer at Audi, says. “Although the design of a virtual vehicle allows much greater freedom and the creation of concepts which are only hard to implement in reality, we did not want to put a purely fictitious concept on wheels. Our aim was a fully functional car.” Just one final thought for the ex-race driver tasked with piloting this at speed – do not crash it.   MORE DYSON Of all the future car projects, the Dyson company led by James Dyson, and best known for vacuum cleaners, seems to have grabbed a lot of attention. And from a practical point of you, once you get past lazy headlines about their cars “not sucking”, they’re very experienced in making consumer products. And battery products too, because they don’t sell those vacuum cleaners with cords any more – they’re all batteries. In an interview with Wired: Wired: Your development of solid-state batteries is key to your electric car plans, isn't it? JD:Diesel-gate and the pollution in cities was the big changer, to the point where we should be banning diesels immediately from cities. France and Britain have decided to ban internal combustion engines from 2040, so it is happening. The public want electric cars, I think, despite worries about range. And the fact that they are quiet - and by the way we ought to make tyres quieter - there are so many things that we can improve it will make the public really want electric cars. Wired: You now have some heavy hitters in automotive at Dyson, such as Ian Robertson, former BMW board member... JD:He just left BMW, but has been on our board for number of years. He had to leave our board when we announced we were doing a car, but I hope he will now come back on the board. We have a very good relationship with BMW. Crucially, we have taken on people from the car industry and mixed them with our people, who are naïve in this area, but inventive - which i think is a really good mix, actually. Wired: Finally, you say you that your cars are going to be "radically different". Can you tell us anything at all about they will be so different? JD:No! When we started this four years ago, Tesla was still very small, diesel-gate hadn't happened and no one was really considering electric cars. So we are not Johnny-come-latelies on this. We had seen it coming, invested in batteries and started our project.   JAGUAR I-PACE MAKER WORKS WITH CHINESE You know that gorgeous Jaguar I-PACE, well it’s actually being outsourced for the production to a company called Magna. And now Automotivenews reports: “BAIC Group (Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co., Ltd.) and Magna today announced that they will jointly develop a next-generation smart electric vehicle architecture for the Chinese market. China is currently the leading market for electric mobility in the world, with around 700,000 electrified cars sold in 2017. By 2020, the number of all-electric cars on China’s roads is forecast to reach around five million, due in part to subsidies and quotas by the Chinese government. Magna Steyr was selected to be BAIC’s partner due to its innovative and cost-effective solutions throughout its complete vehicle manufacturing and engineering services as well as its full-scale electronic/electrical architecture and lightweight technologies. The agreement was signed on April 8, 2018”.   CONGRATULATIONS ZOE Gilles Normand, SVP, Electric Vehicle Business Unit at Renault celebrated the 100,000th full electric Zoe: “Today is a special day. I had the pleasure of participating in the celebration of the 100,000th Renault ZOE that was manufactured in Flins (France). Already 100,000 customers have fallen in love with ZOE! Launched in 2012, ZOE was fitted with a bigger, 41 kWh battery in 2016, allowing it to go even further. And for enhanced driving pleasure we equipped ZOE this month with a more powerful engine, the R110 (80 kW).In addition of being the leading electric vehicle in Europe for the third consecutive year in 2017, ZOE has been voted Best Electric Car by different juries composed of automotive journalists an impressive number of times throughout Europe. But today, I especially want to thank the thousands of Renault employees and the entire dealer network that have worked hard for making this happen”.   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Thursday 8th March 2018. Coming up today, more manufacturers stop selling diesels in favour of hybrids whilst one very large one commits to diesel.  Plus more from today’s Geneva Motor Show like the Hyundai Kona which you and I will to on the show tomorrow. EV TYRE TECH The 2018 Geneva International Motor Show has been dominated by headlines of the best to electrified vehicles, but Goodyear didn't want to miss out. They used the show to debut their Efficient Grip Performance with Electric Drive Technology tyre which, apart from being a bit of a mouthful, is designed for the new breed of electric vehicles. According to Goodyear, regular old tyres you'd get on an ICE car can wear up to 30% faster when fitted to an electric vehicles because in EVs we have all the torques. Cars like the BMW i3 already come with custom tyres mainly because they thinner to have less rolling resistance. And it's not just the next generation of batteries which will give us longer range, it's the rubber too. And finally there's the noise issue. For anyone who has had gone into an ICE car after being in an EV you find yourself shouting because they're so loud, well the new Goodyear's are ultra quiet too to match the cars. The say the custom tread design prevents sound waves from entering the grooves, which in turn reduces cabin noise. Also in Geneva Goodyear showed the Oxygene concept tire. The concept has a unique structure that features living moss growing within the sidewall. This open structure and the tire’s smart tread design absorb and circulate moisture and water from the road surface, allowing photosynthesis to occur and therefore releasing oxygen into the air. OK then http://www.greencarcongress.com/2018/03/20180307-goodyear.html   RIMAC C UNDERSCORE TWO  The Rimac Concept One is a beast and, when it's not being set on fire by The Grand Tour, is one of the best examples of how to make an electric hypercar. Well now we've seen the Rimac C_Two at the Geneva Motor Show. They teased us with it last month but now, in the flesh, it takes your breath away. First, let's get speccy. The specs are: 4 electric motors, 1,914bhp, 0-60 in just 1.85 seconds and a top speed of 258 mph. And get this, the front two motors have one gear whilst the rear motors have two gears. What kind of witchcraft is this? The 0-184 mph stat, which is something I look for in every car I buy, is a rather lazy 11.8 seconds. Only 150 of them will be made which is disappointing because I'm sure we were all ready to sell the house, put the dog on eBay and the cat on Craigslist just to raise the cash. The battery is 120kWh, liquid cooled, which is good for 400miles unless you stamp on the electron pedal. They've also built it with Level 4 autonomous driving so, in theory, you could buy one of the greatest driving machines ever made and have it do all the fun bits. Although if you use self driving in places where it’s not legal, like here in the UK, the police will probably pull you over and send you to jail forever with nothing by memories of the time you drive a Rimac. https://www.autoblog.com/2018/03/06/rimac-c_two-electric-hypercar-almost-2-000-horsepower/   RENAULT ZOE GETS MORE MUSCLE  Car Magazine in the posted some wonderful pics of the Geneva Motor Show which I urge you to check out. Along with supercars and luxury hybrids was the new and very purple Renault Zoe ZE40 R110. The R110 moniker is a reference to the 107bhp motor which is newly upgraded to 80kw and, whilst it doesn't provide much more of a gut punch when you pull away from the light, will dramatically improve the 50-70 time and motorway driving. Oh and it's purple. So very very purple. The press pics a while ago were nice but seeing it in the flesh, it's ALL the purple. The new Zoe will also come with Android Auto and third party apps can be used including Waze, Skype and Messenger. No word on whether the charging will be any faster. Months ago on InsideEVs i read an article about future Zoe's coming with CCS socket and ability to handle up to 150kW charging. With a 40kWh battery to top up, that would be nice, but I can't find anything either way. I'm guessing not. https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/renault/new-renault-zoe-2018-uk-price-specs-performance-interior/   OUTLANDER GETS A POLISH The Mitsubishi Outlander is the outrageously popular plug in hybrid which just keeps on selling in Europe. The updated version was shown at Geneva which is now cleaner, more efficient, smoother and with a more powerful motor. I don't know much about combustion engines, shock horror, but it moves from an Otto cycle to an Atkinson cycle petrol 2.4 litre unit. The important electric bits all get a bit of spit and polish with more power from the inverter, the motor, 15% battery capacity and a higher rate to discharge that power. Altogether a nice set of improvements.  https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/mitsubishi/mitsubishi-outlander-phev-my2019-news-info-tech-spec-pictures-prices/   TOYOTA OFFER AURIS WITH TWO HYBRID OPTIONS So you may know I have a love/hate relationship with Toyota. They were early with electrification and have sold a bazillion cars with a battery in, but just recently they’ve decided to throw shade at plug in cars to advance their own market lead on soft hybrids. Come on Toyota let’s all move forward to together without you starting a fight against owners of plugins and pure electric vehicles. However I do love them for cars like the Auris which sell like hotcakes, and Geneva showed up the third generation which…fanfare please…won’t have a diesel option. Instead there will be two petrol-electric versions. I love you Toyota. However no chance of a third option of a pure electric. I hate you Toyota. Not really. https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/toyota/new-toyota-auris-uk-price-specs-sale-date-hybrid-engines-interior-mpg/   AUDI E-TRON MOVES FROM CONCEPT TO PROTOTYPE Audi were at Geneva with the e-tron. Not so much a concept but a protoype these days. How miffed do you think they are that the Jaguar I-PACE is taking orders whilst they're not ready yet? Journalists have been in one, although not driving one, which is what Jag were doing last December, which was three months away from launch. However all I can get from Audi is that the e-tron will start production before the end of this year. Same as the I-PACE it's compatible with rapid chargers up to 150kW. Same as the I-PACE real-world driving range of 300 miles is the claim. If only idiots like me would stop comparing it to the Jaguar which, did i mention, you can currently buy. https://www.carthrottle.com/post/the-audi-e-tron-laughs-in-the-face-of-range-anxiety/?utm_source=carthrottle-rssfeed&utm_medium=rss   Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. Tuesday 20th February 2018. On the podcast today…  Renault are building on the success with another incremental upgrade to their Zoe. Following a larger battery last year, now they’re upgrading the motor with the R110 model. Its 12kW larger and 16bhp more powerful (91bhp to 107bhp), particularly noticeable at higher speeds, which is what drivers of the new Nissan LEAF have also noticed with the larger motor in that model. The 2018 model year Zoe will also gain Android apps via RLINK, and you can order from spring. http://www.greencarcongress.com/2018/02/20180219-renault.html Volkswagen has unveiled another model from the ID range – joining the ID, BUZZ and CROZZ, we’ve not seen the VIZZION. It’s what they call a premium class saloon/sedan, and will be capable of advanced autonomous driving. VW also say it will come with a hefty 111kWh battery and 225kW motor. Those equal 413 mile range and 297bhp respectively. https://www.volkswagen-media-services.com/en/detailpage/-/detail/World-premiere-of-the-ID-VIZZION-in-Geneva-Volkswagen-shows-the-potential-of-its-new-range-of-IDmodels/view/6263949/7a5bbec13158edd433c6630f5ac445da?p_p_auth=kYDRWB9n The new Mini Cooper E, which will be assembled in the UK, looks like it won’t go into production until 2019, with the first deliveries at the end of the year, and possibly into 2020. https://www.autoevolution.com/news/mini-cooper-e-electric-vehicle-production-start-confirmed-and-it-s-not-very-soon-123610.html In the UK, the private company ‘National Grid’ which manages the electricity infrastructure could be investing in EV Chargers. Up to 50 350kW chargers could be built in England in Wales, with the same in Scotland. Their locations would put 96% of drivers within 50 miles. If we ever get batteries and cooling to cope with such high power, you could charge to 80% in 5 minutes. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/national-grid-plans-350kw-ev-charge-point-network And finally, the curious case of used cars values going UP? Used EV are actually rising in value due to demand. https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/electric-cars-rise-in-value-after-years-use-amid-growing-demand-0wjzszpq6   Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. Tuesday 13th February 2018. On the podcast today… BMW is working on a 10-year plan to guarantee cobalt and lithium supply, down to the level of the mine. The CEO of Panasonic in North America says they’re ready to expand cell production wherever it’s needed, including expanding their facilities Japan. The Porsche Mission E could have the initial production run of 20,000 cars doubled following strong interest, not only in EVs in general, but specifically the Mission E. Chinese Changan Auto confirm to a total phase out of gas powered cars by 2025. Reports of another update to the Renault Zoe ZE40, not to the battery size, but to the motor. The R110 would have an 82kW motor, which is 20% more powerful, combined with an updated CCS Combo charger. The BMW X7 is heading to the LA Auto Show later this year which could include a Plug In Hybrid version to go up against the equivalent models from Range Rover and Mercedes. And finally the Jaguar I-PACE has been spotted by forum member, pulling 5kWh over 40mins from the AC charger. Sadly no photos of the interior were available so we’ll have to wait until the unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show.   Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it.
