In this conversation, Thomas and Giri delve into the complexities of the Ukraine conflict, the implications of NATO's expansion, and the strategic calculations of both Russia and the United States under Trump's administration. The conversation also covers wider European security, and the potential for a new global alliance system, all in the wake of Liberation day, and the extraordinary economic moves of his administration. The Conflicted Community is back to talk about the headlines we can't seem to escape - Donald Trump and his tearing up of the economic world order. This episode, Thomas sits down with Giri Rajendran, the holder of no fewer than 3 degrees in economics and finance from the London School of Economics. Giri has worked as an economist in transatlantic defence before moving to work in finance, first in private wealth management and then on to asset management, most recently at BlackRock, the largest asset manager in the world. In part one of this two-part interview, Thomas and Giri discuss Trump's Grand Strategy - a potentially oxymoronic term, but bear with us here. Listen as the two discuss the long term goals of Trump's economic strategy, America's place in the new world order he is establishing, and, most importantly, whether it can really be successful. Is there a formula for doing and publishing research on digital phenomena? And if so, it is the same formula as the scripts for IS papers of the past, or has it changed? We discuss how our field has historically worked with reference theories from other disciplines and how we have moved beyond this one way of doing and publishing research to a variety of ways in which we can build theory about digital phenomena. We suggest that reference theories should not be viewed as immutable sacred cows but rather as a tentative basis of received wisdom, which we must problematize and adapt to move knowledge forward. Doing so requires us to find puzzles in the real world that point to things being different instead of new. Episode reading list Truex, D. P., Holmström, J., & Keil, M. (2006). Vijay is not a typical interviewee for this show. From being an entrepreneur in commerce and fintech to advising both startups and big companies on product and strategy, his experiences have crafted his perspective on climate investing. He isn't a portfolio founder, but rather a colleague at Climate Capital who is helping to launch Climate Angels - an educational program for potential angel investors interested in the climate tech space.Climate Angels is designed to answer questions about angel investing, particularly in the climate field, which differs significantly from other tech verticals. It will guide participants through the process of developing a robust investment thesis, sourcing potential startups, evaluating them, syndicating, and eventually providing advice or guidance to portfolio companies. From our CC Insights article announcing the launch of Climate Angels:Angel investing, by the numbers.Angels play an important role in the larger venture ecosystem, providing capital to bridge early startups from company formation to their first “real” fundraise. * On average, angel groups invested a total of $5.3 million per group in 2022, an increase of 15% from 2020. The total amount invested in 2021 represents the highest total since the Angel Capital Association began tracking this data.1* Angels continued to focus on investing in pre-seed & seed-stage deals in 2021, reducing investments in later rounds. Angels invested more than 50% of their dollars in Series Seed, which accounted for nearly 60% of deals, up from 50% in the prior two years.* Startups that have angel backing are at least 14 percent more likely to survive for 18 months or more after funding than firms that do not. 2Vijay shares valuable insights into the differences between early and later stage investment, explaining how the journey from idea to seed stage presents unique opportunities and challenges. He emphasized the importance of understanding and evaluating the market potential and the quality of the startup team, crucial factors that every angel investor must consider. The conversation also delved into the shift in perception of climate investing. Traditionally viewed as impact-first and return-second, the narrative is changing. Vijay laid out a compelling case for climate as an investable category, suggesting that the focus should be on the myriad opportunities in the sector, from energy transition to food systems. The Climate Angels program is open to individuals who have dabbled in angel investing and are intrigued by the opportunities in the climate world. It also welcomes those who haven't invested before but are passionate about climate change and want to contribute to the sector in a meaningful way.The Climate Angels program is a unique opportunity to explore climate investing, learn from experts in the field, and contribute to the fight for societal decarbonization. Abstract: Keratin intermediate filaments form strong mechanical scaffolds that confer structural stability to epithelial tissues, but the reason this function requires a protein family with fifty-four isoforms is not understood. During skin wound healing, a shift in keratin isoform expression alters the composition of keratin filaments. How this change modulates cellular function to support epidermal remodeling remains unclear. We report an unexpected effect of keratin isoform variation on kinase signal transduction. Increased expression of wound-associated keratin 6A, but not of steady-state keratin 5, potentiated keratinocyte migration and wound closure without compromising epidermal stability by activating myosin motors. This pathway depended on isoform-specific interaction between intrinsically disordered keratin head domains and non-filamentous vimentin shuttling myosin-activating kinases. These results substantially expand the functional repertoire of intermediate filaments from their canonical role as mechanical scaffolds to include roles as signaling scaffolds that spatiotemporally organize signal transduction cascades depending on isoform composition. This episode is all about how kalimark start their journey, it Started by P.V.S.K. Palaniappan in 1916, the company was named after his father, Kaliappan, who was a coffee and cardamom exporter. Palaniappan, who was 23 at the time, wanted to step away from his father's business and try something different. “The idea struck him when he saw cool drinks manufactured by Spencer's being sold on board trains (Spencer's and Co., founded in 1865, was a store that retailed imported goods—it catered to British expatriates and the Indian elite). When he mooted the idea of manufacturing a local brand to his circle of friends, it was met with an enthusiastic response," says his grandson K.P.R. Sakthivel, proprietor, Kali Aerated Water Works, Chennai, and the eldest member of the family today."At that time, a dozen was equal to 14 numbers. Our marketing strategy was for shopkeepers to buy a dozen but pay only for 12 bottles. The business was not affected even during the freedom struggle. Our glass bottles were imported from Germany,"As the business flourished, Palaniappan's sons—K.P. Rajendran, K.P. Dharmarajan and K.P. Ganesan, along with their sister G. Damayanthi Ammal and her son G. Soundarapandian—helped him oversee it until his death in 1964. Four of Rajendran's children and Dharmarajan's five sons then stepped into the business. As the volume of business grew, the partners wanted to dissolve the “joint family nature" of the business. Consequently, from 1 April 1977, the existing branches were made independent and could use their own financial investment, machinery and other infrastructural facilities. However, business was carried out under the banner of Kali Aerated Water Works, with the name of a particular unit mentioned in brackets to distinguish one from the other. In order to avoid confusion in the future, the family members entered into an agreement on 12 March 1993 under which the right to use the trade name and trademarks was redefined among themselves to remove doubt and ambiguity.Compared to the other brands in the market, the Kalimark brand, with a net worth of around ₹ 100 crore according to Sakthivel, does lose out on the competitive edge because its volumes are much lower than that of its rivals and because the company follows a strict “cash-on-carry" policy. “One of our biggest challenges today is that shopkeepers demand discounts, refrigerators and credit to stock our products. We do not offer any of these, either to the stockists or retailers. As a result, we are not stocked by most supermarket chains. We tell retailers that even if they can't stock 10 of our cases, we are content if they stock one. We have 60 distributors in Chennai city who reach out to about 10,000 outlets," 00:00 - INTRO 00:26 - HISTORY 01:33 - THE PLAN 03:12 - THE DARK PERIOD OF BOVONTO 06:15 - RISE OF KALIMARK 07:26 - CONCLUSION FREE AUDIO BOOK TELEGRAM LINK::::::::::::: https://t.me/official4amtamilmotivation

How can anti-caste allyship move beyond lip service and cede power? In this episode, Christina Dhanaraj and Dhanya Rajendran discuss what it really means to be an anti-caste ally, the role institutions must play, and why caste-marginalised people should take centre stage in the anti-caste movement. Highlights While affirmative action has played a role in bringing caste-marginalised people into formal institutions, higher positions continue to be occupied by those belonging to the dominant castes. We still have caste-powered people at the centre, thinking of how they can be better allies. Instead, caste-oppressed people need to be at the fore, holding the power and being the ones originating anti-caste discourses. Social media has been a powerful platform for anti-caste voices and conversations. However, the call outs that have been happening seem to be taking up more real estate than the issues we should be talking about. It is important to educate and speak to younger generations about caste exclusion and oppression, and make them aware of their privileges early on. The change in news becoming digital, and the world moving online also means that the main source of information has become the internet. When we talk about journalists, their lives too have slowly become a topic of public discussion. But news sometimes tends to be hypermasculine and we hope there was a more gendered lens to it. So in today's episode we hope to look at news consumptions and reportage from a feminist lens. Joining us in this week's episode is journalist Dhanya Rajendran. Dhanya is an Indian journalist and the co-founder and editor-in-chief of The News Minute. She previously worked with Times Now and The New Indian Express. Tune in to this episode where she talks about running a digital media organisation, harassment online and why journalism really is a fun job!
"So I used to tell her these fairy tales also, like Cinderella and Rapunzel and somehow when the story got to the part when Cinderella had to be rescued or Rapunzel had to be rescued, I would find myself changing the story because I didn't like it. I didn't want my daughter to grow up thinking that she needs to wait for some boy to come and rescue her and that she is going to be this passive person who doesn't take charge of her life..." That is Sowmya Rajendran, a brilliant, thoughtful writer who I would describe as a literary torchbearer for the gender movement in India.Welcome to the Story Rules podcast with me, Ravishankar Iyer, where we learn from some of the best storytellers in the world, find their story and unearth the secrets of their craft.I came to know Sowmya first through her children's books - which by the way, pack in a world of meaning in them. For instance, take her book, “Girls to the Rescue”. In this book, Sowmya overturns the typical ‘damsel in distress' plotlines of most fairy tales. Instead, the girls in her stories are smart, independent and take charge of their own lives. Later, I read some of her interpretations of the depiction of gender in cinema and how that is changing - ever so gradually - especially in south Indian films. (She frequently writes on cinema with a focus on the depiction of gender - for 'The News Minute' online publication). For instance, check out this richly analysed, nuanced review of 'Drishyam 2', the Malayalam superhit sequel to the original blockbuster. Finally, I read Sowmya's only adult fiction novel - The Lesson (published in 2015) - a scathing indictment of the patriarchy deeply embedded in Indian society. The Lesson is a darkly satirical tome, and represents, for me, the 1984 moment of India's gender movement. In the book, Sowmya paints a dystopian totalitarian future where masculinity and hyper-patriarchy have been taken to their extreme logical conclusion. It's an absurd, deeply disturbing, and unfortunately, not entirely implausible tale. It's a book that should have gotten more attention. As I was reading through Sowmya's writing (and connected it with the section on patriarchy in Yuval Harari's Sapiens), I had a realisation. We live in a world divided by nationality, religion, language, customs… but having one unifying theme: Patriarchy. While massive strides have been made in the past several decades in the gender rights movement, the underlying patriarchal mindset - which is several millennia old - will not be easy to change. Thankfully, in the long struggle for gender rights, we have leaders like Sowmya who are putting in their unceasing, fearless and most importantly, creative storytelling efforts ... in bending this long arc of the moral universe towards fairness and justice.More power to you Sowmya!Enjoy this long, in-depth conversation with her.***You can get in touch with Sowmya through her Facebook or Twitter accounts.
