Gurdip returns this week for a lively discussion about the soundtrack to Elvis' 1968 film "Speedway," which co-starred Nancy Sinatra, who features on two tracks, making her one of the few artists to ever appear on an album with Elvis during his lifetime. The guys dig a bit into the recording sessions (which, minus Sinatra's contributions, were primarily done at MGM's soundstage instead of at RCA Studio B as usual) and how this move affected the production quality of the album, the poor choice of promotional single material, unfortunate timing of the film & soundtrack's release, and ponder how Elvis' final soundtrack LP for a fictional film managed to, like the first movie album from 11 years earlier, end up with nearly half the songs featured not even appearing in the film itself.  The guys also catch up on a bunch of listener emails, and then for Song of the Week, Gurdip selects Elvis' unique 1957 interpretation of the spiritual "I Believe," while Justin goes much lighter, picking "Poor Boy," recorded for and featured in his first feature, Love Me Tender. Justin and Bec explore Elvis' "marathon" sessions from June 1970, starting with laying the groundwork for the return to Nashville's RCA Studio B, pondering why Elvis may not have chosen to return to Chips Moman's American Sound in Memphis. Instead Elvis is joined this time by a new band led by his live guitarist James Burton but otherwise comprised largely of country-soul players who had worked alongside producer Felton Jarvis in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, including Chip Young, Jerry Carrigan, David Briggs, Norbert Putnam and Charlie McCoy, and rather than a meticulous planned session with Chips' guiding vision... they tear through dozens of songs across four nights, with a follow-up session later that September. Part 1 focuses on the establishing information and the first two nights, June 4-5 and June 5-6, 1970.  For Song of the Week, Bec highlights "I Met Her Today," the understated Don Robertson ballad that was cut in 1961's Pot Luck sessions but held until the hodgepodge Elvis For Everyone album four years later. Meanwhile, Justin goes way back to the Sun era, selecting the middle child single "Milkcow Blues Boogie" - couched between Good Rockin' Tonight and Baby Let's Play House, yet containing that same genius melding of blues (it was written and originated by Kokomo Arnold) and country (also highly popularized by western swing artists like Bob and Johnnie Lee Wills) in a new rockabilly style as anything else he did at Sun. All The Lilacs In Ohio". Su versión junto a Rodney Crowell de "I Ain’t Living Long Like This" es soberbia. On Top Of The World”. Escuchar audio

Jerry Douglas is the most in-demand dobro player in the world. Both are recipients of Americana Lifetime Achievement Awards.

You Marry No Railroad Man.

Meet David Roys. This guy is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to the record industry. We're not talking about the record labels here. We're discussing the actual creation of making records. It all starts with his dad who was the chief engineer at RCA Records from 1956 until 1967 (and won the Emile Berliner Award from the Audio Engineering Society). David followed in his footsteps, starting out at RCA in New York, then transferring to RCA Nashville in 1971 before heading over to Sun Records. David also shares stories of his time working with some of the greats including Perry Como, Patti Page, and of course, Elvis in RCA Studio B. Roys is a member of the Audio Engineering Society in Nashville. RCA Studio B became known as one of the cradles of the “Nashville Sound” not long after it was built. In the 1960s, the Nashville sound had a sophisticated style that was characterized by background vocals and strings. The Nashville Sound is credited for reviving America's interest in country music and helped establish Nashville as an international recording hub. A partial list of the artists who recorded in RCA Studio be include: Elvis Pressley, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Charlie Pride, Waylon Jennings, Eddy Arnold, Chet Atkins and many others. Studio B gets credit for a number of recording industry innovations. You'd have to be a real musician to appreciate this, but it was in Studio B where the Nashville number system was created. From Punk Rockers The Dead Boys To Nashville's Plowboy Records - Cheetah Chrome Visits Madame Perry's Salon Punk legend Cheetah Chrome – co-founder of The Dead Boys, and more recently Nashville’s Plowboy Records – released his first ever studio collection of solo material, ‘Solo’ on Plowboy on October 8, 2013. ‘Solo’ is a 7-song EP of cuts from a 1996 recording session produced by Genya Ravan (with executive producer Hilly Kristal) he has deemed his “great lost solo album” and a Nashville session in 2010 featuring Sylvain Sylvain (New York Dolls), Lez Warner (The Cult), and Sean Koos (Joan Jett and The Blackhearts). ‘Solo’ segues from hard, loud rock to jangly power pop, all anchored by Cheetah’s gruff growl and intricate guitar work. Lead-off track “Sharky” is an instrumental with a touch of surf rock featuring Cheetah on organ and “Rollin Voodoo” rumbles with fuzzed bass and big drums. The EP was released timed to the film ‘CBGB.’ Chrome is portrayed by Rupert Grint in the film and also makes a cameo appearance in it. "Cheetah Chrome: A Dead Boy's Tale From The Front Lines Of Punk Rock" was published in 2010 and is an honest, raw memoir of Chrome's life once music claimed him. February 2012 Chrome became Creative Director of A&R/Director of Special Projects for Plowboy Records, an alternative/legacy label being launched by Shannon Pollard, grandson of Country legend Eddy Arnold, and music historian/author Don Cusic. This was officially announced on May 15, 2012. Chrome is currently producing a tribute record to Arnold by various artists at RCA Studio B in Nashville; as well as preparing a new full length release by The Batusis. Cheetah Chrome is a founding member of Rocket From The Tombs, The Dead Boys, and The Batusis (w/Sylvain Sylvain) and an acclaimed author.
