It's been a year since Baltimore sports fans suffered the first in the latest series of humiliations from their teams who raise their hopes with stellar regular season performances, only to crash and burn in the postseason. In the space of four months in late 2023 and early 2024, Charm City athletic supporters took shots in their collective guts from the Ravens and Orioles, who each won their respective divisions, then whimpered out of the playoffs. The Ravens have stumbled a bit out of the gate so far in 2024, placing their Super Bowl aspirations in a bit of jeopardy. It falls, then, on the Orioles to sing a redemption song for the area faithful who have waited ever so patiently in the short and long term. Yes, it's been a year since the Orioles won the American League East with 101 victories, the first playoff berth in seven years. But the World Series drought for this once proud franchise is at 41 years, and possibly counting. In a certain sense, Bird backers have been like Ralphie, the kid from “A Christmas Story,” who yearned to find a Red Ryder BB gun under the tree, but, more often than not, got a bunny suit. The BB gun seemed oh-so-close last October, when the Birds entered the playoffs with the top seed in the American League and home field advantage throughout, a straight shot to the Fall Classic. Or so we thought. The callow Orioles, with hardly a lick of playoff experience among them, were summarily swept out of the playoffs by the Texas Rangers. That the Rangers went on to win the world championship was of little consolation to the players and their fans, who had to wait a year to prove that last season wasn't a mirage, an anomaly. The first two-thirds of the 2024 campaign led many to believe that the Orioles were the real thing. With newcomers Corbin Burnes and Craig Kimbrel brought in to bring maturity and playoff experience to the young lineup, the Orioles looked poised to repeat as AL East champions, with three players, Burnes, catcher Adley Rutschman and shortstop Gunnar Henderson named to the All-Star starting lineup. However, the club sputtered after the All-Star break, with injuries and poor performances, and landed a wild card slot, finishing second in the division behind the dreaded Yankees. Though the equipment changes from sport to sport, the one thing that all our games have in common is that the postseason of any game is the place where reputations are made and where disappointments can be overcome. And that's how it will be for the Orioles in October. A deep run through these next few weeks will erase the heartache of last fall, A quick exit will trigger questions about who will be here going forward and what happens next. So, for the Birds and their fans, this next month essentially comes down to this question: Will there be a BB gun or a bunny suit under the Christmas tree. It's that time of year again when we welcome the ho-ho holiday spirit back into our lives. We run ragged trying to fill stockings with glee yet leave ours full of coal or worse, empty. This week the guys tackle the most wonderful time of the year and offer some tips for whom the jingle bells toll.  Welcome to episode one hundred eighty three of Above Ground Podcast. The holidays leave many of us full of anxiety and dread. Our eardrums are taken over earlier every year by the sounds of Christmas. We have totally forgotten the Thanksgiving holiday and go right from Halloween into what seems an endless sleigh ride into the exhaustion and debt blizzard. If it's not the wish lists that drive you to more eggnog than normal, it's the current price of everything. From gifts to our mental health the costs are steep and you will pay for it all year long. It truly is the gift that keeps on giving you stress.  If you find yourself feeling lonely, stressed and exhausted there are things we can do to fight off Rudolph's angry antlers. Take a time out for your self. If you find overwhelm under the tree, take a walk. Remind your mind that this too will pass with the snow and cold. Cherish the moments of peace when the kiddos drift off to dream of sugar plums dancing on your head.  According to Boston University, ten million people are effected by SAD (Seasonal Affect Disorder). SAD is a type of depression that starts in the fall and amplifies in the winter. These symptoms tend to resolve in spring and are resolved fully by summer. One way to fight the winter blues is to serve the community. Go out and serve food at a shelter, raise funds for an underserved population or cause. There are no shortages of toy drives, 501(C)3s or ways to help in Nippertown or anywhere you hang your stockings with care.  Try not to be a Scrooge and isolate during this winter wonderland. Get out and skate, sled or snowshoe to your nearest favorite hot cocoa spot. Don't let the season be the reason your alone. Close your laptop, log off your Instaface and go people watch. Feel the stress melt away while you watch everyone else roast their chestnuts in line paying for things they can't afford, for family they hate the other three hundred and sixty four days of the year. Start your own traditions, adopt an elf like Willard and spread Xmas cheer by singing loud for all to hear.  With the sincerest gratitude we are so thankful for all of you this year. All throughout life there will be many things vying for our heart's affection. In A Christmas Story, it was a Red Ryder BB gun that had captured young Ralphie's heart. In this sermon, we realign our hearts so that we might love what matters most.

Do you have a dream, calling or purpose that God gave you? How badly do you want it? Do people make fun of it? What do you do to reach your dreams? Do you go after it? Wait for it? Wait for it to drop in your lap? We're continuing our series on what my favorite Christmas Movies can teach us. Today, we'll learn what the Christmas Story can teach us about our dreams. Today is for you if: If you have a dream in your heart that you want to fulfill. If you've been waiting patiently for your dream to come to pass. If you want to prove those naysayers wrong. 1. Dream Big We begin the Christmas Story in Indiana in the 1940s, and 9-year-old Ralphie had a dream of getting a Red Ryder Carbon-Action 200 shot range model air rifle. God's called us to something greater than ourselves. But you have to dream it first. So dream big. 2. Don't let the naysayers stop you from dreaming Ralphie had naysayers continually remind him when he shared his dream of a Red Ryder BB gun, "You'll shoot your eye out!" Listen, you'll have people disagree with your dream, mock your plan or say you can't do it. Maybe that naysayer is you. I know I've been my worst naysayer over the years. But we can't let them stop us. We must keep dreaming. Keep reaching. Keep going. 3. Get creative Ralphie got super creative, trying to convince the adults around him that he should get a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. He put an ad in his parents' morning magazine. He wrote his themed school paper about it. He brought a giant fruit basket to sweeten up his teacher. He went to the department store Santa to ask him directly. It will take creativity to walk out our dreams and overcome the obstacles in our way. If you're stuck, ask Holy Spirit for wisdom on what to do next. 4. Savor your dream After finally getting his dream Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas, not before getting the worst pink bunny PJs from his aunt, he runs outside to shoot his dream come true. His shot ricochets, and Ralphie thinks he really shot his eye out. But that moment doesn't stop him from savoring his dream; the movie ends with him cradling his dream as he drifts off to sleep. We need to savor our dream. Enjoy it. And not just reaching our objective either. We need to savor the journey on the way to our dream. Bonus Lesson: Roll with the punches Before the movie ends, we see a disaster strike. The neighbor's dogs ran into the home and ate the Christmas turkey. Ralphie's dad's favorite thing of all! So they end up at the only restaurant open on Christmas Day, the Chinese food restaurant. They brought out the Christmas duck, head, and all, while the wait staff sang Christmas carols to the family in broken English. Listen, crap will happen when you're trying to fulfill your dream. But we can't let that stop us, either. We can roll with the punches and turn lemons into lemonade. Your dream is worth the work, but you've got to work it! You've got this, and Father's got you! My cousin David and I used to take our Red Ryder BB guns and go on Daniel Boone hunting adventures, which meant we shot a lot of coke cans off a fence post. On one such outing we were walking down a dirt road, when we saw smoke. We heard a truck leaving the smoky area, so we walked a little farther and saw flames. Jumping the barbed wire fence, we starting fighting the fire with all our might, beating out the flames with sticks and pine tree limbs, as well as throwing dirt and stomping on it to beat the band. We both inhaled some smoke and were coughing, but we were on a mission. Eventually, we put out the last flame. Covered in black soot, we were exhausted, but we had saved the woods and possibly some farmhouses, so we were elated. We ran Back to David's house and retold our firefighting experience to his family. We felt like heroes. But later that evening a man stopped by and asked my Uncle Paul if it was any of his boys that put out a fire. We told him that it was us, and he asked us not to do it again, because he was intentionally burning off an area of the woods. He added that he had to restart the fire later on.This was my first time to hear about a controlled fire; how to burn undergrowth, bad insects and more. I learned that fire isn't always bad. It can serve  a purpose. Sometimes the fiery trials that burn into our day are for our good. The book of James explains how trials develop our faith and patience, so when we smell spiritual smoke, it may sound very strange, but count it all joy!

Transcription:00:02Welcome to changing the rules, a weekly podcast about people who are living their best lives, and advice on how you can achieve that too.  Join us with your lively host, Ray Lowe, better known as the luckiest guy in the world.Ray Loewe00:17Hello, everybody, and welcome to our podcast, changing the rules. We're here at our brand new studios in Willow Street. We're here with our engineer, Luke Cagn0, who makes everything work for us. And thank you, Luke, for being here. And we're here with a great guest today. But I want to give you a little background before we start on changing the rules. You know, throughout our lives we're given rule after rule after rule. It started with our parents, it went to the church and went to the schools and went to our jobs. And everybody's got rules that they throw at us. And some of them are pretty good rules, and we want to keep them and some of them become irrelevant over time. But we have this body of rules that we have to get through. And I think it was Steve Jobs that said, when you're living your life by other people's rules, you're not living your own life. So we encourage you to go through the rules and pick the ones that are really pertinent to you. And we have today one of the luckiest people in the world that we're interviewing, and we define the luckiest people in the world as those people who take control of their own lives, design them to their own specs, and then live them under their own terms. And Dr. John Neely is with us today. And John is a medical doctor. He started his career as a pediatric oncologist. And you're gonna have to define that for us John and welcome to the world of podcasting.Dr. John Neely01:45Great, thanks so much glad to be here. So you want to know about pediatric oncologist? Well, when I went to medical school, actually, which was up in Hershey, you know, when you go to medical school, you're exposed to so many different things. And I for a while thought about surgery, I liked orthopedic surgery quite a bit. But what really caught my eye was taking care of children. And when I realized that I wanted to become a pediatrician. And I was influenced by some of the patients that I saw who were seriously ill at the time. And when I did my residency out in Minnesota, it was one of the bastions of teaching for pediatric oncology. And some of the very first patients that I saw there were patients that had serious oncologic issues. But it just touched my heart when I saw these patients, and I realized, for me, I could do general pediatrics, it's enjoyable enough, but I wanted to do something really challenging. And back in the day, I was encouraged because we were curing about 50% of children with cancer, which meant, of course, 50% were dying. So it was still a somewhat challenging and can be very depressing. But now we're up to about 85 to 90% cure rate. Oh, wow. So we now can tell most families, your child has something serious, we have a game plan for how to take care of it. And the odds are really high that they're going to be cured.Ray Loewe03:15All right. Now you told me while we're prepping for this, about an experience that you had walking down the street one of these days, why don't you tell us about that? Because that puts it all in perspective, I think?Dr. John Neely03:27Well, you know, I think one of the advantages for me of staying in Hershey to throughout most of my oncology career was I took care of a lot of patients and, and I didn't move away. So the odds of my running into them, and some of them I've are close friends with were pretty high. So here I was two years. Well, just before COVID I was at the Fulton Theatre. And they were doing the one of my favorite Christmas plays about the Red Ryder BB gun. And you know, and all of that.Ray Loewe03:57Cleveland, Ohio, right, yeah.Dr. John Neely03:59And it was intermission. And suddenly this guy comes up to me, who has I think two or three children in tow young kids. And he was probably about 40 at the time. And he comes in introduces himself. And of course, I didn't recognize him because I hadn't seen him since he was about 12. And, but I knew right away who he was. And I had taken care of him with leukemia. And not only was he cured of this, but he you know, we think about can you ever have children after therapy and all that? Well, he's living a normal, productive life has at least three kids of his own. And he just came up and said, You know, I saw you over there. You haven't changed as much as I've changed, and he wanted to say hi and thank me.Ray Loewe04:45Wow, what a rewarding career. So so it was all worthwhile. But you haven't stayed there have youDr. John Neely04:51No, and to get to kind of your thoughts about what do you do with rules? I remember because I was the chief of the division of pediatric oncology and a colleague in surgery came up to me at a meeting and he said, What what's your plan for, for advancing and I said, you know, I want to develop this program to the point that it has grown beyond my capabilities. Because I'm very good at patient care and, and some community things. But an area that needed to be spiffed up was research. And I said I want to work the division to the point where it needs somebody beyond what I can do. And that's exactly what happened, I became, I knew that somebody else needed to take over and I was getting very interested in other parts of medicine and leadership. And I made a decision to step down from the Division Chiefship, I still saw some patients, but I started to focus on other areas of medicine.Ray Loewe05:51Okay, so what are they? How did you ever divert your career? And then one of the things that is important as you go through this is that again, I mean, you exude luckiness. You're our definition of the luckiest people in the world over here. Because you, you follow what's fascinating and motivating to you and you make things happen. So what are these areas? How did you find them? And where are you?Dr. John Neely06:17Well, you know, it's an it's kind of like a pioneering spirit. Because I think one of the rules that I've had to struggle with is, because I was always told as a child, you can't fail, you have to get, you have to get straight A's, you have to do this and that. And I've set myself up in careers where there was a high likelihood of failing, because either it was something so innovative, that it wasn't the time wasn't quite ripe for it, or I grew something beyond my capability. So I wanted to move on. So it's been very difficult to say, Hey, I failed, that was a success. You know, that's an interesting thing to look at.Ray Loewe06:55Yes, it is, you know, and that's one of the things that I've learned over life, too, is that if you don't push yourself enough to fail, you're not learning. And I have two different kinds of days. I either have a great day, or I have a learning day, John. Okay.Dr. John Neely07:10That's the way I'm with golf to by the way. That's an impossible task. Yes. So I've kind of done two things since then I, you know, the way people advance in my career is typically they move to a new institution, and then they do the same thing again, you know, they may advance in their academic standing. But, you know, my opportunity would have been to say, I've done pediatric oncology here, now, I'm going to go do it at a different institution, or perhaps become a department chair, which is a different skill set. What I did differently was I decided to stay in the same institution, but to switch a career within that. So I got very interested in some of the things in medicine that I found to be short-sighted because we are trained incredibly well to take care of acute illness. So if you have a heart attack, or if you are in an auto accident, our health care system is the place to be it's the best in the world. But if you are struggling with a family history of heart disease, or diabetes, or there's a tendency to autoimmune diseases, we don't do a lot about the preventative aspects or looking at the whole body as to how they're going to respond. Instead, we throw pills at it. And that's just the nature of how we're trained. It's the nature of how we're reimbursed. So I've spent a lot of time trying to understand holistically how people can bring their life back into balance by having their different systems in their body optimized for function. And then, because my goal is people should, and we always talk about life expectancy as well, I am looking for what's called a health expectancy, I want somebody to live in a healthy, active, meaningful way to the very end of their life. And then they have a relatively short period of time where they may fail. But issues such as cognitive decline, or chronic heart disease, or chronic lung disease, are things that we need to spend more time trying to prevent.Ray Loewe09:16Okay, so where are we with this? What are we doing as a country? And what are you doing specifically?Dr. John Neely09:23Well, I've joined several different groups I've learned. I've done some certifications in what's called integrative medicine, some of which is very helpful, and some of which is not so well proven. And one of my goals is to help guide patients to these are things you can do that might really help and these are some things that you should steer clear of. So I've done that and then I've focused on a specific area of integrative medicine that's got a stupid name, but I can't figure in another name. It's called functional medicine. And, but the gist of it is instead of looking at systems like we look at in medicine, we you know, if you go to the doctor, they always do this review of systems. How are your eyes? Our your lymph glands? How's your heart? You know, and all of that the systems and functional medicine are? How do you take in the most nutritious food and digest and absorb it? What are the rules for what you should be eating and how you should absorb it and how you should protect your gut is an important part for nowadays is how do you feed and nourish your immune system so that when you are hit with something like COVID, you have the best possible chance of fighting that off. And then another area that is important is the environment. What are we doing with environmental chemicals and toxins and all that, that we have to detoxify?Ray Loewe10:51So where are we with that? And what kind of support do you have to do this kind of stuff?Dr. John Neely10:56Well, this is the uphill fight in a way because many of these things are looked at in medicine as Yeah, we know that's important. But we don't have time for that we don't have we're not trained for that. And so I've spent a lot of time and I still do teaching fellow faculty members, fellow doctors about some of the principles of holistic care as it fits into standard western medicine. Now I have some interest in things like traditional Chinese medicine, or Indian or Vedic medicine, I have work some working knowledge of it, but I am not a practitioner of those. But I can help people understand when they're approached with, with some questions about that. I deal a lot with the Amish, for example, who are wonderful people, they are very common sense. And they but they also are interested in natural approaches to things. So a lot of my work with them is saying, we have some things in standard western medicine that would help you but I want to help you with natural medicines that could help things go better for you and help you boost your immune system so we can work together and integrate care, you're going to be my new doctor here John. Well, that you know, that's why we were talking that a goal. Yeah, it's been, wouldn't it be interesting to do some podcasting on these types of topics or even lectures, so, and I'm a teacher at heart, okay, I you know, I'm in an academic medical center, I still love to teach. I'm doing some coursework here at Willow Valley. And that's,Ray Loewe12:31well, let's make a commitment to do that. But I want to probe into something else because you also talked a little bit about communication, and how to improve things. And I know you're doing some stuff here in terms of teaching people how to communicate better. So talk to me about where you're going there. Dr. John Neely12:47Well, that went back. And two ways with my medical career. One was, there's research out there that shows that the time between you go into a doctor's office, and they interrupt you, and don't listen is around seven seconds. So nobody ever has a chance to tell their story, their own medical story. And teaching doctors how to just sit back and listen and have the time to listen is so important. And the number of times in my holistic practice where I have somebody come in and start and I'm sitting there and starting to tell their story. And about five minutes into it, they cry. And they say you're the first person that has ever listened to me. So a lot of this is how do you practice listening? Now from the difficult conversation standpoint, that grew out of some of my teaching of leadership, what is the what are the principles of a sound conversation? What's the difference between a discussion, which by the way, rhymes with the same root word is percussion and concussion. So you can see that a discussion tends to be a back and forth, kind of a fight going on, like percussion or concussion, as opposed to dialogue, which in Greece means to flow through. So teaching how to listen and how to balance a conversation so that new ideas can flow through the group rather than just having a battle back and forth are the principles that I'm trying to teach.Ray Loewe14:20Okay, so here you are, you're in, I'm gonna say, a new phase of your career. I mean, you're phasing out of the oncology you'll never phase out of it. But you'll do less and less. And you've got the interest in preventative medicine, general health care, how do we take better care of ourselves, and this concept of dialogue, so where are we going with all this?Dr. John Neely14:47Well, you mean me personally. Ray Loewe14:48Yeah, we're you gonna take this?Dr. John Neely14:50Well, I do see that at some point, I will fade out I would say, I call it a glide path out of my career, although I still enjoy seeing my colleagues and seeing some patients. But that's becoming less and less of an issue for me, and I just see myself working with some of these other principles. Now, again, I am not so inclined at this point in time to spend day after day seeing patients, because I think might be, I would be better, my talents would be better served in some kind of a lecture type series, we're going to be perfect for broadcasting in some way or another. And then doing some small teaching, the idea of having good conversations, I'm currently doing it with a group of about 21 people here. I would love to see this applied to virtually anybody on the campus, including team members and administration so that we can all learn to converse together and learn together.Ray Loewe15:52So I'm going to change your name from Dr. John to Professor John over here. OkayDr. John Neely15:56You can call me the professor like Gilligan's Island.Ray Loewe15:59Yeah, you know, unfortunately, we're at the end of our time, and we're going to have to do a repeat on this because I think any one of these topics we could spend a whole session on. And I really am kind of interested in this. How do you take better care of yourself? Overall, as opposed to just fighting the battle of here's a symptom, let's get rid of the symptoms. And so let's make a commitment to do that somewhere along the line. And, you know, I want to thank you so much for being here. I think your career is a model for people. And I think it's an important model. You know, here you are you had your career, and most people stay in that kind of a career forever. I mean, after all, you're a pediatric. I'm going to stumble over my pediatric oncologist over here. But you're not satisfied with that. And you're moving on to new things. And you're still a young man. And as we I bet in another 20 years, you're still going to be working on this stuff. To the degree I can, I will be cool. So thanks. Excuse me here. Thanks, everybody, for listening. What are dreams? Well, according to the Sleep Foundation, “Dreams are images, thoughts, or feelings that occur during sleep.” There's a lot of speculation about why we dream, but there's no arguing that the idea makes for a great movie-making opportunity. Let's take a look at Dream Movies!   Dreams with actual dreaming- A classic movie with dreams as the central plot is the 1984 Dennis Quaid thriller Dreamscape. It explored the idea that some could go into your mind with you to control your dreams and even kill you! The same year, Nightmare on Elm Street looked at it from an even scarier point of view. Films like Wizard of Oz and Brazil tell stories that connect our dreams to reality. And Inception created dreams within dreams to give Leonardo DiCaprio opportunities to make us question what we're seeing.    Daydreaming- But you don't have to be asleep to let dreams affect the way you behave. Ralphie daydreamed about his Red Ryder BB gun until his dream finally came true (and his mother's nightmare that he'd shoot his eye out). And The Secret Life of Walter Mitty showed how daydreams can be both dangerous to your mental health but also inspiring.    Was it actually a dream?- Some of the most thrilling dream movies make us wonder if we're watching reality or that character's subconscious dealing with a crazy world. Did Quaid really save Mars in Total Recall? Was Neo really plugged into the Matrix? And did George Bailey ever really exist in Bedford Falls, or is It's A Wonderful Life just a bunch of bunk?!   Grab your Teddy and snuggle up with Jay and Shua as we take a trip around the world and back, and explore the world in your mind.    What dream movies do you enjoy? A couple of weeks ago, I had my annual viewing of the classic movie, A Christmas Story. Like all good classic movies, there are a host of one-liners from A Christmas Story that just stick with you. One is Santa's response to little Ralphie when he asks for a Red Ryder BB gun: “You'll shoot your eye out kid!” Those words resonate with me because my boyhood was filled with annual requests for my own bb gun, something I was lacking but which all the other neighborhood kids had. I never got one. In hindsight, I now understand my parents' decision and appreciate it as I see that in many ways, they were protecting me from myself. As I watched A Christmas Story this year, I got to thinking that parents today need to engage what might be called the “You'll shoot your eye out kid” principle when it comes to putting a smartphone in the hands of a child not yet mature enough to handle the responsibility. Dr. Leonard Sax gives great advice: No smartphones in the hands of kids before the age of sixteen.

A thrilling adventure novel set in 19th century Mexican California in which Zorro, a mysterious masked hero who champions the oppressed using his swift sword to carve Z's on his enemy's faces. The novel, published in 1924, became a hugely popular silent movie in Hollywood starring Douglas Fairbanks as Zorro,, helping to build their movie-making fame in the twenties, and again in the 40's, when Zorro was redone as a talkie, featuring some great sword fighting scenes between Tyrone Power and Basil Rathbone.. The sword was the chosen weapon in Southern California at that time, despite the fact that the pistol was in frequent use. With less than 100 days until November's presidential election, Americans need to take heed and take some time to dive into the Democratic deprivation planned for our country should Joe Biden steal the White House.  Today, I will detail and list one critical matter that many in our country are not aware of and not discussing. For a generation, liberals have attacked our nation's Second Amendment rights. Now, just three months before the 2020 election, Joe Biden is orchestrating a Kabal of gun-haters, hell-bent on disarming law-abiding citizens, leaving them defenseless against Democratic rule. Please sit back, and arm your minds as I layout just what the liberal establishment has in store to disarm our democracy should Joe Biden be elected as our nation's president.  For those of our listeners who follow our postings here at The Liberty Loft, you may have seen an article I posted this week illustrating Biden's gun reform policy. And in that article, I speak of how minorities and those Americans with low incomes will be rendered defenseless under the New Democratic firearm reform.  I urge each of you that missed that article to make sure to pull it up and give it a good read - a lot of useful information there. But, I want to outline some additional details here, some information that no one seems to be discussing, but that will ultimately affect our nation's safety and security should Biden and his left-wing minions gain power.  By now, we all see the writing on the wall here - from coast-to-coast, liberals are doing everything in their power to disarm our country - taking guns and ammunition away from law-abiding citizens and risking the safety and security of those who want to defend their life, that of their family, and their property.  We have all seen the riots that have taken place across our nation's cities. We have seen how liberal prosecutors are behaving against individuals who are standing their ground to protect their lives, in St. Louis, it took the Attorney General of Missouri to step in and dismiss the frivolous criminal charges of Mark and Patricia McCloskey. A circuit attorney charged them with unlawful use of a weapon after they pointed guns at Black Lives Matter protesters in late June. Don't let the mainstream media full you. Joe Biden may be hiding in the basement to avoid further embarrassment of verbal gaffes and unintelligible nonsense - but he is hard at work with his newfound friend, Beto O'Rouke, and others to devise a plan to take guns and ammo out of the hands of legal owners.  Now, Biden and Beto, and liberal lawmakers across the United States have singled out the AR-15, the Am-47, and all high capacity rifles. They have also targeted and grouped all pistols and other firearms that can receive more than 10-round of ammunition - classifying them all as assault weapons.  We have seen what liberalism has done in Virginia and other states - now, Biden, if elected, will take these restricting gun measures to a whole new federal level. The former Vice President is now touting that he single-handedly help ensure the passing of the 1994 Clinton-Era "Assault Weapons Bill." And if elected, he and the liberal-establishment will return our country to an era where the only legal firearm one can carry is a Red Ryder BB gun. Something else I detailed in this week's article, was Biden, Beto, and the other members of his Bolshevik Brotherhood, and their thoughts on moving most legally owned weapons to a ban list, and require citizens in our country to participate in a federal buyback program or register each of their firearms and magazines under the National Firearms Act.  For those of you listening who may not know, the National Firearms Act was passed in 1934 and required certain firearms to register a specific gun, like a machine gun, and pay a $200 tax, along with other fees, to purchase. The $200 price was intended to be prohibitively expensive, almost 400% more than most earned in a month.  Some of you out there may be saying, well, Eric, why is this so important. Well, $200 in 1934, adjusted for inflation, in 2020, would equal almost $3,900. Now I ask those listening today, how many of you out there have $3,900 to pay per firearm to keep them from being confiscated by the federal government? How about those of you who have dozens and dozens of 12, 15, 24, 30, and 45 round magazines. Would you be able to afford an extra $3,900 on each of them?  In case you didn't know, the current penalties for anyone who violates the 1934 NFA federal law are at risk of up to 10-years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Do I have your attention yet?  Folks, as a small business owner, and a Federal-Firearm License holder, since the arrival or COVID-19, and due to liberal government's inability and refusal to keep citizens safe from criminals, firearm and ammunition sales have skyrocketed. Our nation has seen the highest number of gun purchases in history - most of the new firearm purchases are 1st-time gun buyers.  Many in our nation do not believe that their government is providing protection - which for anyone who has read the Constitution knows is the first and most important job of government in the United States. Our nation's brave men and women in the military and law enforcement swear allegiance to protect our citizens from foreign and domestic enemies.  Biden and his communist cronies are planning to disarm our nation - as law-abiding citizens; we are not to look to our local, state, and federal governments to provide protection. No, no, our Constitution affords us these protections, defenses against people both in private, and those within the government who wish to dismantle our God-given rights to life, liberty, and property without Due Process.  The threat is real - as real as Al Qaeda was on September 10, 2001, the citizens in our country face ultimate and grave danger. However, this time, the threat is from within - and the death count will boggle the mind.  Ladies and gentlemen, I urge each of you to wake up and pay attention to what is happening around you. Our nation is at risk; the very fiber of our founding is more fragile today than it was on July 5, 1776.  Are we to sit back and allow for our democracy to be dismantled? No, we need to unite; shy away from being afraid to speak out against what is wrong, and dangerous. Joe Biden has, is, and will be devastating for our country. You need no further proof than liberal lawmakers have allowed occurring all across our nation.  Get up, get mad, and get into action to say we will not disarm; we will not allow those within our government to demand liberal conformity. There were over 80 prophecies in the Old Testament concerning the birth of the Messiah; very specific prophecies, and yet many of the very people who had spent their lives studying those prophecies missed his arrival. The odds of one person fulfilling all 80 of those prophecies are 1 in one hundred quadrillion (1 with 17 "0"'s) yet Jesus Christ fulfilled them all. In this message, we finish up our series on The Real Christmas Story by looking at how many times Ralphie was warned about the dangers of a Red Ryder BB gun and shooting his eye out and how that relates to the warnings of the coming Messiah. So, what was the best Christmas present you ever received or what was the best Christmas present ever people ask this, you know pretty frequently around the holiday season people will say oh, what's the best present you ever got or you know, what have you and of course there is the expected answer your you could think what if you're an adult with children and a spouse then you're supposed to stop and think "Hmm, I should say whatever gift it was that my wife or husband gave me or then you say well, they expect me to say whatever the macaroni picture that my child made in first grade. That was my favorite one ever."-What have you, these are the expected answers or you could say the birth of our Savior. Jesus Christ is the best present ever and that is, of course, something that is expected of you. But that doesn't really take a whole lot of thought doesn't matter of fact, it takes only the thought of figuring out what other people want to hear and that's the problem that we encounter in our world is often when people ask us questions, Rather than giving them an honest answer we stop and try and think what do they want to hear? What do they want to hear? Do they do they want to hear X, Y, or Z or is that the actual answer?-Now I thought about this, I gave it some honest thought what was the best Christmas present ever or some of the best presents? You know when you're a child you get toys and so forth, and when you're an adult you get practical things like wool socks and ties and underwear and shirts and stuff like that. Like, you know, I got you something. I knew you needed, and your wife's like I know you need new underwear. So here you go there in multiple colors, but what are some of the best presents I've ever received.-Well, I'll tell you thinking back to when I was a young child as opposed to an old child when I was young. I received a Playmobil. If you guys know what Playmobil is Knights of the Round Table playset and if memory serves me there were either six or eight nights, and they had all the accouterments it came with they had little horses and swords and Lance's and helmets and Shields and there was like a little round actually wasn't around table. That was a rectangular table, but there was a throne and I'm sure that there's a crown for the king and so, and I law when I was a kid when I was a young child in the 70s. I loved Playmobil stuff and my absolute number one favorite thing. When was the Playmobil Knights of the Round Table or night or whatever it was?- They called it the knights set, and I would sit on the, you know when I got that Christmas morning, I ripped into that thing and I opened it up. I got all the little figures out and all the little horses and everything and I laid there on the floor of the living room by the Christmas tree and I played with that thing for hours. Why because it inspired my imagination there is no batteries. Nothing lit up. You know that it did they didn't make sounds, there is nothing electronic about them. They didn't make sounds it didn't make lights. There's no app to plug in there was no online upgrade to come up with then when I was older my parents knew that I was and then I got into The Dungeons and Dragons thing and so I would go to the Hobby shop.-I think it was called Hobby Lobby or, Hobby Kingdom. The Hobby Kingdom or whatever and they had these little LED figurines dwarves and elves and nights and fair maidens and monsters and Orcs and goblins and all that stuff, and of course, when you bought them they were just plain. Gray, you know their unfinished and what I did in on Junior High I got the little testers paint kits and I painted them various colors and all that stuff and my parents knew that I was into that when I was in junior high and they bought me this set.-It was a Roman legion set and it had all the little legionnaires and chariots and tiny little figures and you could make dioramas and what have, and I remember that because I got that and I thought it was fantastic and I painted each, you know, all the little characters I painted them and and so forth and I would set up scenes and what have you and when I was you know, the thing about Dungeons dragons is the original most kids don't understand this today. They don't realize it because they all have Xboxes and PlayStations or Wii's whatever, but Dungeons & Dragons really required a tremendous amount of thoughtful creativity and imagination because it wasn't all laid out and played out for you.- I mean you had your little figures and you had your cards and you had so forth, but most of it was in your imagination, and so thinking about the greatest Christmas presents that I ever received. At least when I was a child, the greatest Christmas presents that I ever received were those that caused me or required me or inspired me to use my imagination whether it was the little Playmobil said or a little figurines or what have you, and I guess I had an active imagination or whatever you want to call it when I was a kid, but thinking about that and I would spend hours and hours.-I mean that I when I was in elementary school, I was in elementary school. I was probably well. I know I was I was 10 years old the year that Star Wars came out and we went to see in the movie theater and it was the greatest thing at my ten-year-old eyes had ever witnessed. It was phenomenal it changed my life, and so I immediately assumed well as soon as they're available. I discovered that there were Star Wars action figures and so of course, you know, 10-year-old me, 11-12-year-old me there. I was surprised although I gave my child one. I was able to give my youngest child. I gave him a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas many many many years ago. At least for me my honest thoughtful response to that inquiry. What's the best Christmas present ever? (and yes, that's A Christmas Story reference) -- and boys regularly played Cops and Robbers and War both at school and in the neighborhood. Today, we're a little more leery of gun play. And no wonder. Mass shootings seem to happen with alarming regularity, and without exception, the shooters so far have been male. No one wants their son to grow up to be the next school shooter. No one wants their son to kill another human being in anger. So, yeah -- we're understandably nervous when our boys nibble their toast into a gun shape and say, "bang!" But what's the best way to respond to boys' fascination with guns and weapons? Bob Clark directs and co-writes my favorite Christmas film of the 1980s, and perhaps my favorite of any era, A CHRISTMAS STORY, a nostalgic look at childhood that makes me nostalgic for my own.  Peter Billingsley stars as Ralphie, who wants more than anything to get a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas, even though the adults think he'll just shoot his eye out.
