14 09 27 -- The Battle of Flowers parade was my second parade ever. It was April 27, 1979, in San Antonio, Texas, part of "Fiesta," an annual series of events in San Antonio.  I was there with my high school band, on a trip we'd been looking forward to all year. https://battleofflowers.org/events/   The numbering convention is an adaptation of the method used in Defending Your Life. In the movie its a way to refer to specific days in a lifetime while reviewing events that may cover any day within a life. The first number is my age in years on the day this happened, the second is the month number within that year (i.e. the number of months since my previous birthday), and the third is the day within the month. Because I was born at the end of the month, I've simply used the day of that month e.g. for November 11 the month number is 4 and the day number is 11 Although the date is described within the movie as being “Daniels nth year,” the actual year used is his age at that point. This means that, for example, 1/1/1 is his first birthday: the first day of the first month when he turned 1., This is noted as a goof on IMDB ( as described, 1/1/1 would be the first day of his first year I.e. the day he was born) but ... having tried to figure it myself, this method turns out to be easier to calculate and more useful to understand about when events are happening. Note that  14 09 27  is NOT “14 years, plus 4 months plus 11 days” but “the 27th day of the 9th month after my 14th birthday.” A Twitter thread from a day I was thinking about the Battle of Flowers.  On WIkipedia, you can find what a Sousaphone looks like. Repo Man and Plain Wrap according to IMDB https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Texas_tower_shooting Hang On Sloopy is not mentioned here and there was no way for me to have included the relevant anecdote in the episode, but I did want to at least have some reference to it. Suffice it to say that it was a song we frequently played at football games.

One of the least explored subgenres in cinema is the short-lived, radical category known as "punk film." This genre emerged in response to the rise of punk music in the late 1970s, which served as a counterpoint to the hedonistic glam of disco and dance music—a genre I also enjoy. However, punk's emergence was more than just a musical trend; it was a political reaction against the shift toward right-wing and neoliberal policies in Britain and America. Punk embraced a "DIY (Do It Yourself)" ethos that challenged the notion of expertise as an elitist barrier to creative expression. With this DIY spirit, anyone could participate and create without needing to be a skilled musician or filmmaker. Notable examples of punk cinema include Susan Seidelman's *Smithereens* (1982), Allan Moyle's *Times Square* (1980), Julien Temple's *The Great Rock and Roll Swindle* (1980), and Gregg Araki's *The Doom Generation* (1994). However, the film that arguably stands as the "Citizen Kane" of punk cinema is Alex Cox's *Repo Man* (1984). This visionary film captured the punk ethos of early 1980s Los Angeles. *Repo Man* is smart, bizarre, hilarious, and cosmic—making it one of the standout films of the underground cinema of that decade. Join Azed and Tom as they explore this remarkable work by the often-overlooked Alex Cox.

"There's always a choice. You're the one who taught me that." After giving us a glimpse of Wolverine's past in "Red Dawn," the stage was set for a full-length exploration in our very next episode. And with that, season two continues its globe-trotting, introspective character-driven features with a solo outing centered on the enigmatic Canadian X-Man. Notably, the extended flashback at the center of "Repo Man" pulls directly from Barry Windsor-Smith's 1991 Marvel Comics Presents serial, "Weapon X." Violent and atmospheric, this adaptation can't help but suffer in comparison due to the necessity of reigning in the comic's harsher elements for Saturday morning consumption. Beyond that, "Weapon X" had a tenuous relationship with the canon from its inception, with the story calling its own authenticity into question at various points. Nevertheless, "Weapon X" was so well-received that it stood for years as the most definitive account of Wolverine's origin. Later revelations and retcons would muddy the waters, but at this point, the animated series is guided by a very solid pedigree. The inclusion of Alpha Flight, while appreciated from a world-building standpoint, doesn't do this episode many favors in terms of clarity. Outside of shedding some light on Wolverine's past, the plot is concerned with linking two seemingly disparate milestones in Logan's history: how his skeleton came to be laced with adamantium, and his involvement with Alpha Flight. The shadowy, unscrupulous, ultra-militaristic Department H serves as the connective tissue, leading to an ultimately unsatisfying conclusion. If Department H was behind or had knowledge of the Weapon X Project, as the episode suggests, then Logan escaped their clutches by the skin of his teeth, only to soon thereafter coincidentally meet James Hudson, who happens to be the leader of Canada's premiere superhero team, and is brought in to join Alpha Flight, under the purview of... Department H. It begs the question as to how Wolverine was allowed to leave the team in the first place. (To say nothing for the fact that he was given the codename of the project that "created" him, a detail which makes little sense as either another absurd coincidence or as an inside joke by Department H... for the audience's benefit only.) Department H's connection to Weapon X seems like it should come as a major revelation, at least to Logan, but the script doesn't attribute any particular significance to this. Still, it's hard to fault the show for filling in logic gaps that the comics themselves had yet to address, given the time and resources allotted. Wolverine's mysterious past represents a corner of X-Men lore that somehow always manages to be more interesting in theory than in execution. Every resolution offered comes with its own set of brand new questions, and in that sense, "Repo Man" can be considered faithful to the spirit of Wolverine's role throughout the '90s. As a cohesive story, it is ultimately unsatisfying, but almost manages to stick the landing by way of momentum and novelty. It remains to be seen how sustainable that approach will be going forward. X-TRA: This episode was written by Wolverine co-creator Len Wein, his first of four such credits over the course of the series. It's a curious fit, given that Wein chronicled only Wolverine's earliest appearances when the character was effectively a blank slate. He therefore has the unenviable task of cobbling together pieces of a mythology which he had no hand in establishing. It's an admirable effort, and a credit to the production for reaching outside their usual pool of television writers.

Those Wonderful People Out There In The Dark

Well, Noirvember may be over, but our journey into my made-up sub-genre, atomic noir, is not. It's a cheery continuation for the holiday season. At least the next film has some humor in it, as opposed to the sadism in November's Kiss Me Deadly… Thanks for those memories Mickey Spillane! This month: released in 1984 by Universal, it's Repo Man, directed by Alex Cox on a shoestring budget of $1.5M, resulting in lasting indy fame and approbation. If you look it up on Wikipedia, they label it as science fiction black comedy. Oh, but it's so much more! So, I'm slapping on my own label of atomic/punk/noir. But, yeah, there is a science fiction twist, and it does have some stealthy humor.  Why continue in this vein? Well, last month, we looked at the horror of mid-50s America, with its hide-under-the-bed fear of commies and pinkos, plus it's palpable fear of the A-bomb. That whole scene blew open with the rise of white guy rock n' roll, Kennedy kicking Nixon's ass (well, by a slim margin), the rise of the counterculture, and the narrow atomic war escape of the Cuban Missile Crisis, where the clock ticking toward Armageddon nearly struck midnight. Whew! People woke up, man! But then, that was blown away by Johnson's failure in Vietnam, the US actually losing a war, resulting in Nixon slithering into the White House for two terms (but now, the guy looks like an amateur), ending with the national nightmare of Watergate. Backlash to the Democrats and Jimmy Carter. But public trust had evaporated. Justice and higher ideals went out the window. People were tired --- they didn't believe in much at the dawn of the 80s. Except maybe in going to B-school, working on Wall Street, and having a home in the Hamptons, with a pool and jet ski. Who rode in on a white horse to burnish this turn towards Mammon? Why, Ronald Reagan. Or, as Doc Brown memorably put it in Back To The Future --- “The actor?” Website and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comIG: @thosewonderfulpeopleTwitter: @FilmsInTheDark

Musician and filmmaker Dimitri Coats — guitarist for the punk supergroup OFF! and frontman for Burning Brides — joins host Aaron Sagers to discuss his punk rock sci-fi comedy feature film Free LSD, which he wrote, directed and stars in, as well as his own paradigm shifting experience with potential extraterrestrials. Receiving comparisons to Repo Man, Free LSD also stars OFF! singer Keith Morris (from the bands Black Flag and Circle Jerks) in the lead role, and other musicians David Yow (The Jesus Lizard) Autry Fulbright (And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead), DH Peligro (Dead Kennedys), as well as Jack Black, Dana Gould, Chelsea Debo, Chloe Dykstra, James Duval, Barry Del Sherman, Chris D., E.R. Ruiz, Gill Gayle, Davey Havok, and S.A. Griffin. MORE ABOUT FREE LSD Keith, an elderly sex shop owner, falls for a younger woman who visits his store looking for a gift. When their relationship turns physical, Keith's failure to perform leads him to a strange erectile dysfunction doctor who offers hope in the form of an experimental drug. The experience gives Keith much more than renewed manhood. It also provides a glimpse into a parallel universe where he is not only the singer of the band OFF!, but also the target of an advanced AI species that will stop at nothing to prevent the group from making a new album, which holds the key to an awakening of human consciousness. _______________________________________________________________ Talking Strange Paranormal Show with Aaron Sagers is a weekly paranormal pop culture podcast featuring celebrity and author interviews, as well as learned experts in all things strange and unexplained. We also review the 4K release of Alex Cox's Repo Man from Criterion. Be sure to check our website for all ticketing information on our final shows of the year in Seattle, Portland (Oregon) & Boston! And don't miss your chance to catch the replay of our SCRE4M show that happened last month! You've got now through November 6 to snag that show! Cover art by the incomparable Felipe Sobreiro.

January 18th, 1993 marks the HISTORIC 2nd episode of WWF Monday Night RAW. The Royal Rumble is coming up and we have a lot to promote. Including, The Repo Man stealing Macho Man Randy Savage's hat. Yup, you heard me right, the entire episode revolves around Macho Man's hat getting stolen. Also, Rob Bartlett is still here on commentary with some “comedy.” Plus, Mr. Perfect and Ric Flair build to a Loser Leaves The WWF match, a couple Superstars call in to commentary, and of course this is the Royal Rumble go home show!
