It's been another wild week around here with the Oilers rollercoaster zooming up and down, and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never ready to cover it all. On today's podcast, I talked about the Nation Vacation to Vancouver, the Oilers' recent run of games, Isaac Howard's steady improvements, Jack Roslovic settling in, and much more.After wrapping up the intro with a full breakdown of the Vancouver Nation Vacation, I dove into the rollercoaster that is being an Edmonton Oilers fan in 2025. While the Oilers' record isn't actually that bad, the inconsistencies from game to game are undoubtedly frustrating. How the team can go from sloppy and disorganized, as we saw for long stretches against Seattle and Vancouver, to being a total wrecking ball against the Utah Mammoth makes no sense whatsoever. Even though we're used to knowing how well Edmonton can play and watching them fall short of that bar early in the season, that doesn't make the frustration any less, even if no one is particularly worried in the long term.Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about player fines before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was very quiet again this week, but the limited messages were still fun regardless. This quarter, we dropped the oil page from our Guide to the Markets. There are always exactly 65 pages in the Guide, so when we want to add a page, we have to get rid of one. The process is, unfortunately, democratic, so when my younger colleagues wanted to add pages illustrating U.S. equity market concentration (page 10), the AI capital spending boom (page 22) and dollar weakness and international equity outperformance (page 43), I had to surrender the oil page. But I did so with all the foreboding of well-grizzled experience.

Final Destination 3 marks the point where the series' once-ingenious death-trap premise starts to feel a bit mechanical. The franchise's formula — a character foresees a horrific accident, cheats Death, then scrambles to outwit its unseen design — is intact but beginning to show its age. The opening roller-coaster disaster is spectacularly staged, yet it's also a reminder that we've seen this all before, only with diminishing returns. There are still flashes of the dark humor that made the earlier entries work, particularly in some of the elaborate kill sequences. Mary Elizabeth Winstead does her best to ground the chaos with a solid performance, and the inventive set-pieces — especially the infamous tanning bed scene — keep things intermittently lively. Still, the connective tissue between the deaths feels more like an obligation than a thrill, with dialogue that takes itself far too seriously for a film about Rube Goldberg-style fatality. By the time Death checks off its last victim, Final Destination 3 feels less like an inevitability and more like repetition. It's not bad, just tired — a middle entry coasting on the momentum of its predecessors rather than carving out a fresh reason to exist.
