We're joined by Jay from Players Classic, Players Shows, Flat 6 Show, Hoonigan and star of many PVW magazine features for this fantastic episode. Come with us, back in time to when Skoda's were seriously uncool - His Dad had many of them! Fortunately in Jay's words, he knew how to take care of himself, otherwise it would have been a very unpleasant time at school. Jay's Dad also had a Rover P6 with the number plate 999 BAN - and he was a Police Officer!! Other stories in this episode include his Aunt Mick's Ford Fiesta Supersport and she was arguably responsible for getting Jay into cars. The Fiesta later got part exchanged for a Honda Civic, which eventually ended up with Jay after she passed away - and he ran that car into the ground. We hope you enjoy this one as much as all the others!Support the Show. We'd love you to hear and share your stories, please tag and follow us on social media. www.instagram.com/mydadscar_podcastwww.Facebook.com/mydadscar podcastwww.buymeacoffee.com/mydadscarIf you'd like to support the podcast and are able to, you can ‘buy us a coffee' which will help towards costs of hosting and purchasing equipment to allow us to record guests in person, rather than just on zoom. Jonny is still giggling about a strange B-52s reference. Also in this episode, old Skodas, car sellers who have unnecessary opinions about paint colour, the imminent return of the Vauxhall Frontera, a manual gearbox with an amusing name, the BMWs you wouldn't miss, a listener's experiences of the Eagle Quest limousine, Richard's attempts to fence a knackered Picasso, the movie career and surprising fan base of the Ford Flex and incredible tales from the Franchitti brothers. Plus, we've had a lot of messages about The Corrs going on tour with Natalie Imbruglia. patreon.com/smithandsniff Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. With Elis James spending this Friday sunning himself in Wales it was down to John to choose a suitable co-host to take his place. It was a drawn out process featuring seven preliminary rounds of auditioning, two auditions in front of a live audience and an arm wrestle. The victor, and sharing the airwaves with John this week, was none other than Ivo Graham; and boy did he relish the opportunity. Making his first appearance as an official co-host, Ivo really embraced the cut and thrust nature of broadcasting with John. It was a case of “run before you can walk”, and with each stride he got closer to a finishing line marked “chat”. There was an impromptu discussion with a referee, John got annoyed during a Made Up Game, Ivo put his improv skills to the test and Producer Dave NEARLY Backed Britain.
On this edition, host Ian Parkinson joins the Shimano Neutral Service squad on the first stage of this year's Itzulia Basque Country. He learns about the work of these unsung heroes of the pro peloton and gets a high-speed ride around the Basque hills in the passenger seat of one of the famous blue Skodas. And Phil Wright reads Passion Project from Rouleur 109, the story of how two Italian entrepreneurs started an international bike clothing brand from their kitchen table. NORTHVOLT BATTERY PLANT SPARKS INTO LIFE, A FIRST FOR EUROPE - Sweden's Northvolt said on Wednesday its new gigafactory in northern Sweden has assembled its first battery cell, making it the first European company to design and manufacture a battery on the continent. - The cell is of a prismatic cell format - a variety of thinner and lighter battery - and came off the assembly line on Tuesday. - Northvolt CEO Peter Carlsson had told Reuters that the new factory would produce a battery this year "even if it means the first battery is made on New Year's Eve". - The company is aiming for the Skelleftea plant to achieve production capacity of 60 gigawatt hours (GWh) as it aims for at least a 20-25% market share in Europe by 2030. Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/technology/northvolt-produces-first-battery-cell-sweden-gigafactory-2021-12-29/ - Tesla is due to launch its first factory in Europe shortly and Asian rivals have significant operations in Poland and Hungary - but no European firm had yet operated a significant facility until now. - The new factory, dubbed "Northvolt Ett" (Northvolt One) in Swedish, already employs 500 people and will likely have as many as 3,000 staff once it reaches full capacity. - The Swedish company, which has already raised funding of several billion euros, was founded in 2016 by Carlsson and Italian Paolo Cerruti, both former Tesla employees. - Its location, some 200 km from the Arctic Circle, was chosen because it is near important sites of renewable production in northern Sweden, including hydropower. The number of gross reservations (since the ID.4 introduction in March 2021) has increased to more than 40,000 (as of mid-December), out of which over 15,000 cars were sold. - Assuming that there were not many resignations, there are still some 25,000 ID.4 buyers waiting for Volkswagen to ramp up production and sales, which is not easy considering production constraints and high demand also in Europe. - The good news is that in 2022, the company intends to launch localized production of the ID.4 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Battery cells for the cars will be supplied by SK Innovation's SK On from the new battery plant in Commerce, Georgia. An automaker's Prime Directive is to produce vehicles that open their doors and drive off on the first attempt, just as a telephone that struggles with audio calls is flawed, no matter how marvelous its other capacities. But five years from now, nobody will remember the glitchy door handles I experienced in early-production vehicles. THE TESLA MODEL 3 - The Tesla Model 3 has only been in Europe for a couple of years now, but it has been an instant hit. In 2021, it is expected to be the best-selling EV there, topping competitors like the Volkswagen ID.3 and the Renault Zoe, according to a new report. You can see why Tesla CEO Elon Musk is so anxious to get Tesla's factory in Germany up and running. - That report, published in Automotive News, also says that, unsurprisingly, Tesla will be the best-selling EV brand, too, though Volkswagen will be the best-selling EV company, by virtue of selling EVs not just with the Volkswagen marque but also electric Audis, Cupras, Skodas, and Porsches, too. - Sales of the Model 3 jumped 84 percent to 113,397 through November, according to data from JATO Dynamics market researcher. Volkswagen's ID3 compact hatchback is likely to be at No. 2. ID3 sales rose 125 percent to 63,109 in the first 11 months. The Renault Zoe, 2020's best-selling EV is on track to be No. 3. Through 11 months, Zoe sales were 60,551, down 27 percent. For those not in the know, the Ryzen (formerly Atom) is responsible for handling infotainment duties on Tesla EVs. It's directly responsible for the screen's responsiveness when activating menus, playing games, loading apps like YouTube or Netflix, and swiping around the navigational map. - The first Model 3 and Y vehicles with MCU3 (Infotainment Computer with AMD Ryzen) are now being produced and delivered in North America! - One other notable change coming alongside the Ryzen chip is the inclusion of a new, smaller Li-ion battery to power the vehicle's 12-volt system. This replaces the antiquated 12-volt lead-acid batteries found in almost every other internal combustion engine vehicle and previous Teslas. The Li-ion battery, which is shared with newer Model S and Model X vehicles, weighs just 4 pounds compared to 27 pounds for its lead-acid predecessor and should last the life of the car (instead of 2 to 4 years). Peter Grindrod talks with Digby Paape about Skodas.
Schnittig, kantig - eben was ganz eigenes - der Skoda ENYAQ in freier WIldbahn! / Bild-Quelle: privat PodCast abonnieren: | direkt | iTunes | Spotify | Google | amazon | PROUDLY RECORDED AND PRODUCED WITH Ultraschall5 Folge direkt herunterladen
After a mild hiatus Rachael and Tim are back to talk about the huge pile of cars they've reviewed over the past month – from €1.5m super GTs to electric Skodas, 600hp hybrid Hondas and two Lotuses that Tim used to make the internet angry. We also chat about what life's been like since starting our fledgling careers on YouTube – from the comments to the algorithm to the MONEY.
PJ is now the oldest man in the world. Like everyone else in their 40s, he has given up on life. Then there's the story of the naked burglar. PJ gets whiskey for his birthday and proves he likes it by saying what he would have said if he didn't like it. He then bangs on about the rules of whiskey. The pair of them are hooked on the ibuprofen, mad for it altogether. The red wine isn't doing it for Suzanne anymore, she's on the injectables now. Now, the big question of the week - do you tip your food delivery people? And do you tip your parcel delivery people? A very revealing conversation ensues. Luca the Italian sword-champagne-bottle-opening-Maseratti-driving delivery man (he actually owns his own restaurant but it doesn't sound as good) makes an appearance via PJ's gregarious description of him. There's talk about Skodas and St. Anto finds something Suzanne has been missing. Then St. Chris and St. Raphael go head to head. PJ puts himself inside a dog. There's a nice mental health chat then, phones sent away in the evenings, the ability to change your mind. Hospitals, radiologists, vaccines and tears of joy all make an appearance. It's a great episode of Dubland, get it #InUrEarsIf you let the ball drop, you'll be grand. There's also loads of great bonus episodes for members now. With Holden leaving the market, Australia police forces have chosen a range of different alternatives. Now NZ police have taken a direction similar to Europe more than Australia. They will be replacing their Holden fleet with Skodas built in the Czech Republic. The specific model is the Skoda Superb station wagon in either the 162KW 2WD or 206KW all wheel drive layout. NZ has some 2000 primary response vehicles currently and they saw Holden's withdrawal as an opportunity to reduce carbon emissions and ensure value for money across their fleet. When frontline staff tested the Skodas they liked the large, wide-opening doors, easy-to-read instruments, front and rear visibility, and the space for rear passengers Electric and hybrid vehicles were tested, but limitations including power efficiency and the total cost of ownership meant they were not the preferred option.
On today's podcast, the fellas see if Skodas are really cut out to be the new vehicle of the Police force, Matt chats about the lamb he and his kids demolished and the death of Diego Maradona results in a raking over the coals of the 1986 Football World Cup...

Allowing yourself to become a specialist is the first step on the business ladder to a more attractive clientele. By diversifying into new markets, you and your company can keep developing your expertise and not “dilute” it by catering to a broad spectrum of challenges. A Ferrari mechanic will charge you a lot more for fixing your Ferrari, than your local mechanic down the road. But if you enter the Ferrari garage, and you see a few Ladas, Skodas and Toyotas. Your trust will drop, your willingness to pay a premium for their services will disappear completely. And there is a good chance you will take your Ferrari somewhere else. This goes for almost any business as well. And if you want to be a specialist, the one business that charges a premium for fixing the ferraris of the business world. By diversifying your market, you expand the number of Ferraris in your clientele. Hence you don't have to fix the Toyotas, Ladas and Skodas to stay in business. And you can keep on developing your Ferrari fixing skills while charging the premium that makes you attractive for the premium clientele

Dubland will be doing a live podcast as part of Dublin Podcast Festival on Friday 12th of October! There is a hell of a lot of singing because PJ is excited about Halloween and he's annoyed that Christmas is already, ALREADY, getting in the way of it. Suzanne and PJ also talk about young doctors, and the one thing PJ hates more than Christmas - beards! Suzanne talks about the British funeral ritual of Death Limbo. PJ officially writes his will in this episode, so this is the one that you should come back to if he dies young and tragically. They also talk about the Pope and how nobody really cared about him and his Skodas. Also Dublin won the All Ireland, if you haven't heard. There are Dubland T-shirts now! Go and buy one or four of them! Anyway, enjoy! Join the HeadStuff Podcast Network group on Facebook. Follow Dubland on Twitter or Instagram.
Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Wednesday 11th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. An update on a story I mentioned briefly yesterday...with many news outlets confirming the news such as Bloomberg saying "Nissan Motor Co. said it will investigate instances of misconduct involving falsified data about exhaust emissions and fuel economy, the second controversy in less than a year for the automaker whose vehicle-inspection scandal had led to the recall of about 1.2 million vehicles. The data falsification...occurred on 19 models across five plants in Japan. During the checks, Nissan found out that employees misrepresented temperature and humidity data in the testing chamber and manipulated emission data on carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. The automaker has hired a law firm to investigate the matter further." TESLA TO BUILD GIGAFACTORY IN SHANGHAI We knew it was coming, just a matter of when not if, and it has just been confirmed Tesla will build a factory in Shanghai, the city government announced. WSJ said: "The electric-car maker will set up a plant with an annual capacity of 500,000 vehicles, the Shanghai authorities said in a statement. Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk was in Shanghai to sign a memorandum of cooperation with Mayor Ying Yong". But why build a factory there? Once Tesla Shanghai has the new Gigafactory at capacity, they'll be building half a million cars for the Chinese market without paying the new import duties. Plus they could move the cheaper cars, like base Model 3 and base Model Y to be built there with lower costs, to increase margins. We know that Freemont is full and Elon has said in the past the Model Y won't be built there. Tesla said in a statement to Bloomberg: "We expect construction to begin in the near future after we get all the necessary approvals and permits. From there, it will take roughly two years until we start producing vehicles and then another two to three years before the factory is fully ramped up to produce around 500,000 vehicles per year for Chinese customers. Tesla is deeply committed to the Chinese market, and we look forward to building even more cars for our customers here. Today’s announcement will not impact our U.S. manufacturing operations, which continue to grow.” "Tesla’s lone car-assembly plant is in Fremont, California, where it’s built about 88,000 cars through the first half of this year, and it has a giant battery factory in neighbouring Nevada. After moving ahead in China, the world’s largest market for electric vehicles, Tesla has said it will reveal plans toward the end of 2018 to build a plant in Europe." Although this isn't a financial podcast and I never pretend to understand the finer subtleties of a balance sheet, TEsla has $2.7bn in cash at the end of Q2 2018, with a plan for the Model 3 to make them profitable between now and the end of the calendar year. China has been an investor in Tesla before, with Tencent Holdings Ltd. spending $1.8 billion to buy a 5 percent stake in March 2017. MERCEDES ECITARO IS AN FULLY ELECTRIC CITY BUS At a major launch event yesterday, Mercedes revealed their all electric eCitaro bus. They said the powertrain has electric motors at the wheel hubs. Lithium-ion batteries with a total capacity of up to about 243 kWh provide the power. The range is 150km. They are modular in design: the batteries are split between up to ten modules, each supplying around 25 kWh. As well as two battery modules on the vehicle roof, the standard equipment includes four modules in the rear of the bus. In the eCitaro, these are taking the place of today's powertrain combination of combustion engine and transmission. Depending upon customer requirements, another two or four battery modules are mounted on the roof of the eCitaro. They're using prismatic cells. Mercedes-Benz cools the batteries to ensure that they remain at the ideal temperature, thereby ensuring maximum charging capacity, performance capability, and service life. This cooling is undertaken by a separate battery cooler mounted on the roof. At extreme outside temperatures, the standard passenger-compartment climate control system is used to boost the cooling of the batteries. They see an upgrade path too as battery technology increase: "transport operators will even be able to increase the range of the existing eCitaro buses by swapping out the batteries at a later time and thereby further increase the operational flexibility." They are also talking about solid state batteries, which they predict will offer a 30% increase from 243kWh to 400kWh from 2020. However due to design these won't be swappable with the Li-Ion batteries but sold as a different range. VOLKSWAGEN EXPANDS "ROADMAP E" — AN E-MOBILITY ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVE IN CHINA On Monday 9th July Volkswagen Group China signed a "Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)" with JAC and SEAT in Berlin, to establish a new "Research & Development" center with a focus on developing electric vehicles, connectivity and autonomous driving technologies, as well as a competitive platform for battery electric vehicles (BEV). SEAT brand will be introduced to China by 2020/2021. This new Memorandum of Understanding will play a key role in Volkswagen Group’s e-mobility plans for China, in order to meet the demands of Chinese customers. Together with JAC and SEAT, Volkswagen Group China will establish an R&D center to develop electric vehicles, connectivity and autonomous driving technologies specifically tailored to the Chinese market, including relevant parts and components and core technologies, with completion planned for 2021. CHINA'S CATL TO BUILD ITS FIRST EUROPEAN EV BATTERY FACTORY IN GERMANY "Chinese battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL) will build its first production site in Europe in Germany, agreeing a major contract with BMW to supply lithium-ion batteries." according to a report from Reuters, which adds to more of what we've previously reported on this story:" A contract to build the new plant was signed on Monday during a visit to Germany by China's Premier Li Keqiang. Around 240 million euros (S$379 million) will be invested in the first phase of the project, Wolfgang Tiefensee, Thuringia's minister of economic affairs, told journalists. BMW plans to source 4 billion euros of battery cells from CATL over the next few years, with 1.5 billion euros coming from the new site in Erfurt in eastern Germany, the carmaker's purchasing head, Markus Duesmann, said. CATL, the world's largest maker of battery cells for electric vehicles, said the new factory was just its first step in Europe." says BusinessTimes.com.sg: "The CATL factory will create about 600 jobs and reach production of 14 gigawatt hours (GWh) by 2022. CATL reached shipments of 12 GWh in 2017." Deussmann also added: "BMW had invested in some of the costs for the CATL factory in Erfurt, but declined to say how much. Duesmann said BMW was investing in cell research but a decision on whether to produce battery cells itself had not been made. "I don't rule it out," he said. BMW is "very comfortable" with two suppliers of battery cells at the moment, but could add a third and is in talks with eight manufacturers, he added". NOW ANYONE CAN CONFIGURE A MODEL 3 LA Times reports: "Anyone can access the Tesla’s Model 3 “online configurator” and lay down a non-refundable $3,500 cash payment; the delivery date is determined after the money’s been transferred to Tesla." I tried it here from the UK, but with my US VPN connected, and the TEsla.com site hadn't updated. "The stated wait time a Model 3 runs from immediate delivery to as many as nine months for the company’s long-promised $35,000 base price version. But each customer is informed individually about his or her specific delivery date." Tesla replied to a request for comment with this: "“Tesla has always required this deposit for all of its vehicle orders, including Model S and Model X, given that we build cars to our customers’ specifications. That deposit goes towards the purchase price of the vehicle.” We heard at the start of July, when Tesla confirmed they had made 5,000 MOdel 3's per week, that the official number of outstanding orders was 420,000. Tim Pollard, writing for the always-excellent CAR Magazine here in the UK reports that: "Skoda is working on a range of performance electric vehicles loosely dubbed e-RS to indicate the EV equivalent of the Czech company’s vRS go-faster brand. Global sales and marketing chief Alain Favey told CAR magazine that Skoda is planning performance spin-offs of its future EVs, which are in development and ready to launch from next year. First up is the e-Citigo, basically a Czech-branded Volkswagen e-Up testbed, due for launch in late 2019; but this is just the warm-up act for the main event - the new bespoke EV crossover due a year later in autumn 2020, which will be the first to get Skoda’s proposed new e-RS derivative." Favey said to CAR: "There will be an e-RS,the logic is the same as for vRS. It’s not about performance as such… it’s more about the look, the sporty seats, the experience. That’s the spirit of vRS.’ "Expect a 300-mile range, design consistent with regular Skodas, a fast-charging network at main dealers, new, floating instrumentation and the very latest in connectivity, according to Favey." https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/industry-news/skoda/skoda-e-rs-electric-vrs-performance-cars-from-2020/ VW EYES GOODWOOD RECORD WITH ITS I.D. R PIKES PEAK ELECTRIC RACER "Hardly content with shattering the all-time record at Pikes Peak, Volkswagen wants its I.D. R Pikes Peak electric race car to be the one to beat on other tracks. It's taking the racer to the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the south of England this week, with designs on setting not only the electric car record at the Goodwood Hillclimb, but perhaps the overall benchmark too." according to Engadget: "The Goodwood festival marks the competitive debut of VW's car in Europe, while it will also host the European debut of Tesla's Model 3." https://www.engadget.com/2018/07/09/vw-pikes-peak-electric-race-car-goodwood-hillclimb/ MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV REMAINS UK’S NUMBER ONE PLUG-IN VEHICLE "The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV continues to be the UK’s best-selling plug-in electrified vehicle. Sales of Mitsubishi Motors’ petrol/electric plug-in hybrid SUV totalled 537 units in June and 3,732 units so far this calendar year, ahead of every other pure EV and plug-in hybrid on the market" as reported yesterday by Automotive world.
