Today I'm doing something fun and different…Live-writing an AI policy with my friend and colleague, Dr. Kate Henry of Honing In!After listening to the Off the Grid AI series, Kate reached out to ask if I she could hire me to help her write an AI policy. Free subscribers can hear our reflections on AI in creative business, and paid subscribers get to come along as we write Kate's AI policy in real time (with a template for you, too!).When you join the Clubhouse at offthegrid.fun/clubhouse, you'll get access to over 50 bonus episodes (and counting), curated tech + creative business newsletters, and more. Plus your own private podcast feed, comments threads, and behind-the-scenes updates on the show. Please join the Clubhouse to support Off the Grid! What does it actually look like to buy 10 online businesses over 14 years - and still be standing? Not the highlight reel. The chargebacks, the 95% traffic drops, the seller-financed deal you hand back four months in because you simply can't make it work. The slow, painful realization that passive income was never really the point - ownership was. Brock Yates has been buying online businesses since 2012, starting with a $3,000 turtle website he found on Flippa with zero SEO knowledge and zero plan. By the time he quit his day job in Switzerland to go full-time, he had a portfolio of content sites generating more than his salary. Then the Google Helpful Content Update hit. And then ChatGPT changed everything. In this episode, Brock doesn't just share what went wrong - he shares what he actually did to crawl back, adapt, and build something more resilient on the other side. In this episode, you'll learn: Why Brock handed a $220K–$280K e-commerce acquisition back to the seller after four months - and what he'd do completely differently today The one thing every first-time buyer underestimates: the seller's institutional knowledge and what disappears the moment they walk out the door How a 95% traffic drop forced him to rethink content sites entirely - and why the turtle website outlasted everything else in his portfolio The WooCommerce vs. Shopify decision that's shaping his entire content-to-commerce strategy now How he used ChatGPT to build a free tool in 20 minutes that took a brand-new GM vehicle site from zero to 1,000 email subscribers - and counting Why buying a business to "own for 10 years" changes every decision you make from day one The niche-selection mistake that kills most content sites before they ever have a chance to grow Whether you're sitting on a content site wondering what to do next, or you're a first-time buyer trying to avoid the mistakes most people only learn the hard way - this conversation is one of the most honest, practical accounts of what building an online portfolio actually looks like across a decade.

Washington Democrats promised that taxing businesses into submission would fund a progressive utopia. Instead, a tech firm just shuttered its doors and wiped out 83 jobs — a direct casualty of the state's increasingly hostile tax environment. This is what happens when Olympia treats job creators as revenue extraction targets rather than economic engines. And if you thought Senator Pedersen's much-hyped tax "fix" would turn things around, think again. Small businesses across the state are now reporting closures tied directly to the unintended consequences of Pedersen's legislation. The cure is killing the patient. Democrats keep writing bills that sound reasonable in a press release and detonate in the real economy. This is the Pacific Northwest doom loop playing out in real time — businesses leave, jobs vanish, tax revenue craters, and Olympia responds by doubling down. Sean breaks down both stories and explains exactly who's responsible and why they'll never be held accountable.CHAPTERS0:00 Washington's Punishing Taxes BACKFIRE:…1:50 Novanta Shutters Mukilteo Laser Plant2:53 Mukilteo Has Few Industrial Businesses3:25 Novanta Moves Mukilteo Jobs to United…4:30 Millionaire Tax Architect Dismisses…5:16 91% of Washington Employers Won't Expand7:02 Novanta Shifts All Work to UK Facility7:55 83 Jobs Cut as Stockport Capacity…9:07 Washington Among Worst States for…9:46 Novanta CO2 Lasers Moving to Stockport11:06 SEC Filing Reveals China Assembly Shift12:39 Novanta Keeps Detroit Office, Drops…14:25 Sam's Tavern Closes After 13 Years15:25 Mamdani and Katie Wilson Promise…18:12 Washington's Punishing Taxes Are by…19:33 Oklahoma City's 1,700 Homeless vs…21:10 Why Tech Companies Stay in Washington…22:02 Climate Commitment Act Drives…Subscribe to @reasonablenews for daily coverage of the stories Washington's mainstream media won't touch.#WashingtonState #BusinessExodus #ConservativeNews

This was a fun interview. Had the chance to catch up on some Aussie stuff with Chris McShanag of VirtualTeammate.com. The main topic with Dana Peffer of Sgt. Peffer's Cafe Italian was the games voters and the legislature are playing with minimum wage and the impact that has on small business owners. All of the other annyoing questions I asked her had to do with dropping glasses, too-small plates, whether today's teens are good workers, and more.
Welcome to another inspiring episode of The Brand Called You (TBCY)! She shares candid lessons on resilience, what it truly takes to build and scale a business, the importance of aligning values with actions, and why small businesses are the real backbone of the global economy. You'll discover her thought-provoking approach to overcoming adversity, the philosophy behind Silver Lining's name, and why real success might not be what mainstream entrepreneurship tells us.Whether you're an entrepreneur, small business supporter, or simply curious about impact-driven leadership, this episode is packed with wisdom, practical advice, and motivation. Seattle now boasts the highest minimum wage in America at $21.30 an hour, and as usual, the socialist utopia experiment is backfiring spectacularly. Local restaurants are shuttering left and right—Belgato, Jackson's Catfish Corner, BBOP Waffle Shop, and more—because Democratic Socialist dreamers forgot one tiny detail: businesses need to actually make money to survive. We break down how Seattle's progressive wage mandates are crushing small businesses already struggling post-pandemic, forcing closures, reduced hours, and counter-service models. Meanwhile, activists keep demanding corporations subsidize their failures while those same corporations pack up and leave for business-friendly states. The kicker? When businesses close, that $21.30 minimum wage becomes $0.00. Funny how the math works when ideology meets reality.Think Seattle's 45% above-average cost of living might have something to do with 40 years of Democrat policies? Or should we keep blaming greedy small business owners trying to survive?
Think beating big-box brands means slashing prices? Think again. We sit down with Sri Kaza, a seasoned strategist turned small business champion, to unpack how owners can outmaneuver giants with positioning, trust, and community—no coupons required. Sri's journey from consulting and executive roles to leading a small-business lender gave him a front-row seat to what really drives resilience: relationships, not gimmicks. We dig into why discounting attracts ghosts instead of fans, and how to build a customer base that shows up when it counts. From CrossFit-style community to a brilliantly curated convenience store beside a Tesla charger, we break down memorable examples of differentiation in action. You'll hear how to communicate value, price with confidence, and design experiences people would fight to keep—so you stop racing to the bottom and start owning your niche. The conversation also gets practical about navigating shocks. COVID and recent tariffs revealed a speed advantage small businesses rarely use: you can talk to customers today, pre-wire changes, test substitutions, and adapt without committees. We explore how to choose your customer, say no with conviction, and avoid self-sabotage on social media. Sri's philosophy in Unconvention ties it together: align your business with your personal purpose, and profitability and fulfillment become reinforcing, not competing. If you're a founder, owner, or side-hustler craving a real playbook, this is a clear, grounded roadmap. In this episode of Small Biz Florida, recorded live at the 2025 Small Business Success Summit in Tampa, host Tom Kindred is joined by Boyd Karen, founder of Otro Financial, to discuss one of the biggest hurdles facing small business owners: access to funding. After launching or acquiring eight businesses of his own, Boyd discovered just how hard it is to secure loans—especially those under $350,000—from traditional banks. That frustration led him to start Otro Financial, a company that helps entrepreneurs secure unsecured loans based on personal credit, without collateral or years of business history. Boyd explains how these loans serve as bridge funding, helping startups survive and grow until they reach the two-year milestone that banks prefer. He also shares practical advice on improving personal credit, the value of alternative lending, and how Otro Financial supports entrepreneurs—especially Spanish-speaking founders—with tools, webinars, and resources. Whether you're launching your first business or facing a funding gap, this episode provides the insights and options you need to keep moving forward. The proposed substantial fee hike for H-1B visas could give big tech companies a competitive edge in poaching U.S.-based foreign talent, while smaller businesses might struggle to keep up. John Kaplan believes this could accelerate the shift to global hiring and remote work, potentially benefiting U.S. workers in the short term but having long-term implications for the education system and the U.S. workforce.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. In this Grownlearn episode, Sal Rehmetullah (co-founder of Stax Payments and now Worth) breaks down how he and his sister Suneera scaled Stax to 500 employees and $200M ARR, sold it for $1B, and then turned their attention to the broken world of small-business credit. We dig into Worth's AI-powered underwriting plus onboarding stack, why they don't touch fund flows, and how they're partnering across global data sources so banks and lenders can understand real-time business risk—think “Credit Karma for business,” but built for enterprise adoption first. Sal also gets candid about purpose post-exit, minority-led entrepreneurship, the $25M seed led by TTV Capital, and what SMB owners can do today to become more lendable. About the guest: Sal Rehmetullah is the co-founder of Stax Payments (one of the first minority-led fintech unicorns) and co-founder of Worth, which is rebuilding the financial infrastructure for SMBs with real-time compliance, onboarding, and underwriting. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GrowNLearn, led by Zorina Dimitrova, connects select VCs, Family Offices, and Strategic Investors with precisely matched, high-growth ventures across Europe and the U.S. We also support founders with strategic growth advisory—helping you transform your business model, increase valuation, and prepare for investment or exit.
On today's episode of the Govcon Giants Podcast, I sit down with Zach Michelson, Small Business Program Manager at Sandia National Laboratories. Sandia is more than just a research and development hub — it's a $5.2 billion operation that spent nearly $1.7 billion in subcontracts last year. Even more shocking, over $1 billion went directly to small businesses, accounting for 67% of their procurement spend. That means hundreds of new suppliers — between 350 and 500 every single year — are being added to their vendor list. If you've ever wondered where real contracting dollars are flowing, Sandia is one of the most active buyers in the game. Zach and I break down exactly what Sandia is buying right now — from R&D testing equipment to construction projects, IT, staffing, and even everyday commercial products. You'll also learn how to get in the door through their iSupplier portal, avoid common mistakes, and position your company as one of their go-to vendors. With upcoming construction booms, innovation buys, and opportunities hidden outside of SAM.gov, this is a must-listen episode if you're serious about cracking into government contracting. The U.S. job market is experiencing a significant slowdown, with only 22,000 jobs added in August, marking the first net job loss since December 2020. The unemployment rate has slightly increased to 4.3%, indicating a decline in hiring and job seeker enthusiasm. Despite these challenges, the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in the labor market is not leading to widespread job losses. A recent survey revealed that only 1% of service firms reported job cuts due to AI, while many companies are retraining existing employees instead of laying them off. The tech sector, however, is seeing a rise in job postings requiring AI skills, reflecting a shift in hiring practices.Small businesses are facing increasing challenges as confidence in their marketing efforts declines, despite higher investments. A report indicates that only 18% of small and mid-sized businesses are very confident in their marketing outcomes, down from 27% the previous year. Many businesses are turning to AI tools and email marketing, but they struggle with limited time for marketing activities. Economic pressures, including rising costs and tariffs, are also impacting operational strategies, leading to concerns about the effectiveness of marketing investments.Tariffs are causing disruptions in tech pricing and delaying PC upgrades, with the removal of the de minimis exemption leading to increased costs for imported goods. This has resulted in price hikes for various products, including luxury items and personal computers. Despite the impending end of support for Windows 10, many businesses are hesitant to upgrade to Windows 11, opting instead for extended support packages. The rise of AI-enabled personal computers is notable, but the associated costs due to tariffs are making these upgrades more challenging for businesses.Broadcom is consolidating its control over VMware, transitioning a significant portion of its customers to subscription-based services. This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance the VMware Cloud Foundation offerings. Meanwhile, a new integration between DarcyIQ and Kaseya Autotask aims to improve operational efficiency for managed service providers by streamlining ticket and project management through natural language conversations. This highlights the need for smarter tools in the industry, as third-party solutions are increasingly filling gaps left by platform vendors.
