True Story of Rapid, Strategic Growth Supported by Fractional Marketing Services We had the opportunity to have Luke Riordan, Founder and Partner of Dayta Marketing in the studio today as our guest host! Luke invited a long-time client, Tim Kraemer, President of TKI to share his story of rapid growth, that was largely due to the strategic marketing partnership his company has had with Dayta. The company was founded 86 years ago, and Tim and his brother Brian are the 3rd generation owners. The company name, “Tom Kraemer, Inc” bears the name of their father. Tim and Brian have been strategically growing the business ever since they took over and have made numerous acquisitions since then, with their most recent being in Buffalo MN of the LaPlant company. TKI as locations in several markets across Central MN and specializes in the sale and rental of portable shipping containers. They attribute their exponential growth primarily to the targeted marketing strategy they do with Dayta. As for acquisitions, they've become much more strategic about what constitutes a fit for them today vs in the early years. Tim said they learned some interesting lessons when the first started acquiring companies. Dayta's approach to partnering with TKI has grown from a Social Media client over 10 years ago, to being their ‘marketing department' with specialized team members within Dayta who cover all the bases from strategy, to web development, to Social, and Brand messaging. When a new location opens up, they formulate a plan ahead of time in order to create some buzz around it before it actually happens. In other words, a pre-launch plan that's executed first. Noah Berger of the Merrimack Valley Regional Transit Authority (MVRTA or MEVA) has done two amazing things at his agency: he's increased ridership 122% and gone zero fare--even going so far as removing the fareboxes from the buses. And the amazing thing about it is the why. Noah believes if take care of all your riders in general, you'll get more riders overall. He gives the example of accessible buses. They are great for people with disabilities, but they are also great for parents with strollers, people with groceries, and that person who doesn't need a lift, but appreciates having only one step to get on the bus. Noah believes transit needs to be a part of the community, really a part of it. MEVA embraces the people and cultures of his region. He's creating hubs for people to gather and small businesses get attention. He's worked with arts groups to give homes to custom-painted pianos and benches. He's ensuring everything about MEVA is made to get people where they need to go. From route numbers that make sense to route planning that get people to and from the places efficiently Noah is always thinking about his customers. Noah will be part of a first-of-its-kind debate at the Executive Summit during ThinkTransit on zero fares vs fare enforcement. Given his experience and results, it's going to be a good debate. It's not too late to register for the Executive Summit or ThinkTransit. We have all the registration information on the ThinkTransit website. This week we bring you two fantastic and thoughtful interviews on Transit Unplugged News and Views. First, transit consultant Christian Kent of Transit Management Consulting, LLC, talks with Paul about two essential topics: Delivering paratransit services Ensuring our hiring practices are inclusive and welcoming for disabled applicants. Christian talks about how the world of delivering paratransit has changed in the 30-odd years since the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) first enacted the rules. He believes there are better, faster, and more sustainable ways to deliver paratransit by looking beyond "typical" paratransit solutions and towards solutions like TNC (transportation network companies) and fully accessible transit. Christian then segues into hiring the disabled. We are in critical need of workers, and the unemployment rate among the disabled is still around 70%, but are our hiring practices inclusive? Do disabled applicants feel welcome to apply? Something we all should ask ourselves when it comes to hiring. We then move on to another powerful leadership segment with Shawn Moon, Senior Consultant with FranklinCovey. Shawn is the co-author of Leading Loyalty: Cracking the Code to Customer Devotion and talks with Paul about the four critical facets of leadership and building an engaged team. Shawn continues with the three critical pillars of building loyalty with customers and the people you work with. Leadership and loyalty are intertwined together with what Stephen M. R. Covey will be talking about next week with a special Transit Unplugged In-Depth: leadership and trust. Also in this episode: Paul talks more about the Executive Summit during ThinkTransit and one of the burning issues facing the transit industry: fares. You can read more about the Executive Summit on the Trapeze blog. Elea Carey talks about how to spread the word that a career in transit isn't just all about driving. There are hundreds of careers in public transit from mechanics to marketing, plumbing to planning and more. As mentioned above, our special guest next week is Stephen M. R. Covey co-founder of the Global Trust Practice at FranklinCovey. This week we give you the first of three podcast episodes from Paul's recent Pacific tour that took him from Hawaii to Malaysia to Singapore. We kick things off with the CEO of Sarawak Metro, Ts Mazli Mustaffa. Sarawak Metro is in a unique position where they are tasked with building and expanding public transit in their region--a challenge that always fosters innovation. As you'll hear in Paul's conversation with Mr. Mustaffa, they have a tremendous innovation running in Sarawak: an autonomous, green hydrogen-powered trackless tram that works like light rail, but on wheels. This gives them the ability to flexibly manage the service without needing to worry about tracks or railways. The autonomous rapid transit solution has also had a side benefit as a way to create jobs and technology innovation in the region. From generating green hydrogen to power the fleet to the technology that makes the buses autonomous the Sarawak region is at the cutting edge of these two key technologies. Also in this episode, Mike Bismeyer brings us Mike's Minute reflecting on last week's guest Eulois Cleckley's leadership segment focusing on people and mentoring. Here is an update as trade shows begin to take shape for 2023. The International Air Cargo Association said its Executive Summit 2023 will be held in Brussels November 6-8, 2023 at the exquisite, recently renovated, historic Skyhall. Inaugurated in 1958, to receive the many visitors of the first post-war World Exhibition, Skyhall was nothing short of ground-breaking. One of its outstanding features was the 1,800-meter high, glass-fronted transit hall with its seemingly floating arched roof. Interestingly the TIACA Executive Summit will take place in Brussels almost one month to the date FIATA International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations closes its World Congress Event (October 3-6, 2023) , making 2023 the year of a big double header win for BRU Gateway. Dare we imagine some interaction of these two stalwart world transportation organizations? TIACA said that it is working with Brussels Airport Company to organize a first class conference, which will bring together over 300 decision makers from across the globe to network, showcase their companies and products, as well as learn and debate pressing issues affecting the entire industry. I am sure you all missed “The Mayor of MURTEC!” Next big show for me is the Restaurant Finance & Development Conference and the Digital Signage Expo, both in Las Vegas in less than a week. If you are going to attend RFDC, make sure you stick around Wednesday morning and join the Technology Boot Camp where Zerrick Pearson, Galen Collins and myself will be teaching on various areas of technology in the restaurant industry. You can even get your certification at the end of the session. I hope that is reason enough to see you there!Today, we are going to switch things up a little bit as I had promised you a show with Bob Gibson, previously from Jolt and Oracle where we have a VERY interesting conversation on vendor / client relationships. However, given the fact that my colleague, Toby Malbec just attended the MURTEC Executive Summit, I thought I needed to jump on the opportunity to get a recap from him so he could fill us in on all the amazing things that I missed. I am sure not all of you were able to attend either so this will be very informative for all of usAs you know, I work side by side with Toby at ConStrata and why I love having him on the show is that we don't always agree on things, which makes for a healthy conversation. You can breathe now. Take all this experience and you can see why we partnered with Lynn in 2018 and 2019 to create the Executive Summit Series leveraging Lynn's background as a CSO and the track record above. The pandemic forced us to pivot, and Lynn is now directing the future of the Executive Summit Series. The next one will take place on April 28, 2022, as an anchor event for DSAC week and will be held, as in previous years, at The Boeing Company in Arlington, VA. Lynn and I sit down to discuss his agenda outline. Enjoy the conversation.

Have you ever wondered how people get training on running a public transit agency? Public transit is a very complex business/service to run, so how do you learn everything you need to know? The answer is the National Transit Institute at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. Paul talks with Executive Director Billy Terry about NTI and everything it does. Like having to switch from 98% in-person classes taught around the U.S. to 100% virtual classes taught remotely. We also hear from Elea Carey on how to get your message out quickly and Mike Bismeyer on conferences as essential parts of staying current in your field. We wrap this episode with Tris, Paul, and Randi talking about the upcoming Executive Summit at ThinkTransit this March 20-23.
