Siri has a body. AI's most familiar voice is not just a disembodied all-knowing benefactor of trivia, recipes, and everything else you can't recall (or never knew) at any particular moment. According to Professor James Muldoon, author of Feeding the Machine: The Hidden Human Labour Powering AI, “... AI has a material body and exists only through new chips, servers and cables being manufactured and added to the machine. And just like a physical body, AI's material structure needs constant nourishment through electricity to power its operations and water to cool its servers every time we ask ChatGPT a question or use an internet search engine. The machine lives and breathes through this digital infrastructure.”The physical body that makes up AI is not just sucking up water and power. AI is also built on the backs of real people. Not just the air-conditioned Silicon Valley engineers you might be imagining. AI relies on the work of hundreds of thousands of low-paid workers spread across the global south.Host: Jesse BrownCredits: Caleb Thompson (Audio Editor), Tristan Capacchione (Audio Editor and Technical Producer), Written and Presented by Bruce Thorson (Senior Producer), max collins (Director of Audio), Jesse Brown (Editor and Publisher)Fact checking by max collinsAdditional music by Tristan Capacchione and Audio NetworkFurther reading:What's behind the AI boom? Send us a textRidhiman Balaji offers a profound examination of sweatshops and labor exploitation, challenging us to rethink everything we know about these complex global issues. From the historical roots in the Industrial Revolution to the alarming similarities with today's gig economy, Ridh unravels how labor practices have evolved yet remain fundamentally exploitative. Is the gig economy just a modern-day sweatshop in disguise? Listen as we dissect these parallels and explore the intricate web of labor rights worldwide. Our conversation extends to the persistent problems within informal economies and child labor, with an eye on the roles of both the United States and India. The International Labor Organization's efforts and the challenges faced by smaller countries striving for economic autonomy are scrutinized, uncovering political and economic intricacies. We explore the interplay between labor movements, trade agreements, and minimum wage systems, revealing the hidden motivations behind policies that often prioritize tax revenue over worker welfare.Taking a critical turn into the realm of Marxist theory and labor internationalism, we delve into contentious debates surrounding sweatshop labor, intellectual defenses, and critiques of Marxist exploitation theory. By bringing in perspectives of notable figures like G.A. Cohen, we question conventional wisdom and consider how these arguments shape today's anti-sweatshop movements. Ridh's insights promise to stir debate and inspire thoughtful reflection on global labor dynamics, pushing listeners to question where they stand on these pressing human rights issues. AI's rapid advancement comes with a hidden human cost. Not just the vast number of jobs that may be eliminated, but the little known digital sweatshops that are crucial to the ongoing development of AI itself. In my recent WhoWhatWhy podcast, James Muldoon, associate professor of management at the University of Essex and co-author of Feeding the Machine, argues that the rapid advancement of AI technology comes with a significant human toll. Research by Muldoon and his colleagues exposes the often-overlooked exploitation of human capital in the Global South that lies behind the high-tech rollout of AI.

In this segment, I dive into a letter from a seasoned Sugar Baby who wants to set the record straight on allowances around the country. While Sugar Dating allowances can vary from city to city, we try to give a good general perspective. There are always fringes who do much better than average, just like with OnlyFans. I personally know women making 6 to 7 figures per month with OF, but that is not the average! Then, she presents an interesting theory to what's driving the scammer profiles that have exploded on Seeking. They are fairly easy to spot, but is it actually Human Trafficking? This week we sat down with someone we consider to be low-budget horror royalty. It's Jeremy Sumrall. We know him best here at SlashU for playing The Beast in 2009's "Sweatshop" but he's done tons of other great things! So we got Jeremy on the line and decided to talk all about it for about an hour. He told great stories of how he started out, how he wound up in both "Sweatshop" and "Axe Murdering with Hackley." He talked about how sometimes the best thing you can do in making films is just 'show up' and be helpful and be grateful for every opportunity. Check it out and let us know what you think, and go show Jeremy some love.www.JeremySumrallFlickmaker.comfollow us on Instagram @SlashU_PodcastCheck out the Facebook page tooEmail us at SlashUPodcast@gmail.comClick on the "buy stuff' links at SlashUPodcast.com to support the showThanks to ZapSplat.com for our Sound FX Hosted on Acast. What can we say about Peter Bagge? Maybe that he has one of the most unique art styles and careers of any creator we've had on the show? Yeah, that sounds right. The cartoonist with the most elastic, frenetic figures came up in the world of underground comics and alternative papers in New York City. Peter found a kindred spirit in R. Crumb, who gave him assignments (including the editorial reins) in Weirdo. He struck it big with two solo series at Fantagraphics: Neat Stuff and Hate, the latter of which is probably his most well known work. Peter went on to work on Yeah! (with Gilbert Hernandez), Sweatshop, and Other Lives for DC, his versions of Spider-Man and Hulk for Marvel, and a few projects at Dark Horse. He's also dabbled in comics journalism. What a neat guy!You can follow Peter on Instagram @pcbagge and X @PeterBagge1.Support the Show.
The universe, points out economist Noah Smith, is always trying to kill us, whether through asteroids hurtling through space or our every-few-hours hunger pains. Why, then, should we expect anything but a gravitational pull toward poverty? Listen as Smith explains to EconTalk's Russ Roberts why he believes that poverty will always be our "elemental foe," and how what he calls "industrial modernity" is key to keeping poverty at bay. They also discuss Smith's impatience with the "degrowth movement," which he thinks jeopardizes our gains in the fight against the elemental foe.

This week Chris brings us a special feature interview with artist Isabel Pan. Pan is the artist in residence at C.A.S.A Zamora in El Monte. Her project has been a documentary-style, slice of life comic strip depicting the impact of sweatshop labor and refugee crises on the children of immigrants in the San Gabriel Valley. Pan's subject is the son of a sweat shop worker, Denny. His parents came to El Monte in the late 70's, fleeing the Vietnam War. They endured the loss of family en route to America, and the struggle of working in the garment industry once here. Pan's comic strip is titled Má, which is what Denny calls his mother. Má explores the generation gap and communication breakdown that Denny experienced growing up with parents who were traumatized by their escape from Vietnam and exploited by employers in Southern California. Denny's mother was a work-from-home seamstress, payed cents per piece, who provided a home for her children. Pan - raised in part by working class grandparents - talks frankly with SBLA about the physical and emotional burden of this labor, as well as the beauty of sharing these experiences with other Monteros. Her comic can be found at Matilija Lending Library in El Monte. Patreon Preview from Blamo! When most of us see a "made in USA" label, we assume the workers were treated well. Or, at least, according to our nation's labor laws. In fact, many garment workers in this country are paid as little as $50 a day to work 12-hour shifts.Derek and Peter discuss how this is possible and how a new federal bill called The Fabric Act can help empower workers.**Listen to the entire episode and on the Blamo! Voice Of GO(r)D is very happy to kick off Truck Driver Appreciation Week in conversation with Dr. Michael Belzer, the author of Sweatshops on Wheels, an academic inquest into what happened to the wages and working lives of truckers in the aftermath of economic deregulation, brought to the industry by the Motor Carrier Act of 1980. Published back in 2000, this book remains one of the seminal studies on the effects of deregulation over this very large and important sector of the working class. Professor Belzer's own website does a great job on his bio - https://www.michaelbelzer-saferates.com/ "Dr. Belzer is a former Teamster tank truck driver with ten years and more than three quarters of a million miles of over-the-road experience. He was a driver both before and after deregulation. For thirty years, he has been studying the economics of the trucking industry, supply chain infrastructure, truck driver health and safety, unionization and collective bargaining, and the effects of deregulation. His experience and research show that recruitment, retention, and safety problems are economic, not technical. Based on his research and analysis, he proposes clear policy solutions to the issues facing the trucking industry: fair labor standards, "safe rate" regulations, and the use of market forces to create incentives for behavior changes. As he knows from his perspective as an economics professor and as a former truck driver, being a truck driver was once a good job and it can be one again." Unfortunately, Sweatshops on Wheels is out of print, but you can find used copies on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/Sweatshops-Wheels-Winners-Trucking-Deregulation/dp/0195128869 Hopefully he gets back the rights to the book soon, as he indicates in the show that he would like it to be made available free. As the labor movement pushed for greater recognition, pay, and conditions in the workplace (on land), the sailors of America had a tougher fight. The nature of maritime commerce made sailors foreign in a domestic sense, as the Supreme Court would rule. Geography complicated their place in constitutional law, and made them at once victims and agents of the American empire. Will Riddell joins me to discuss these labor issues and his new book On the Waves of Empire.Essential Reading:William D.
