Don't get holy on me, James. This town called you, too. You and me are the same. We're not like other people. Don't you know that? This week we conclude Silent Hill 2, the psychological horror titan from Team Silent. A deep descent - figuratively and literally - into James Sunderland's psyche shows horrors and suffering that nobody saw coming in the opening hour or two of the game. And what makes this so effective? In retrospect, the game has been intensely thematically focused from start to finish. In 1999, Keiichiro Toyama and Team Silent created one of the most-celebrated horror video games of all time: Silent Hill. Almost every superlative you can think of was thrown at Harry Mason's jaunt around the foggy American town. A few years later, Toyama and others that worked on the Konami classic took their talents elsewhere and tried to do it all again. We're going back to 2003 to look at a PlayStation 2-exclusive horror game. We're talking about Forbidden Siren (or just Siren for some of you).On this episode of Stealth Boom Boom, we look at how developer Project Siren was keen to work on a horror game with more of a Japanese flavour, citing the J-horror boom as reason enough to give it a go. We also discuss how one TV ad for the game had to be cancelled after seven (7!) complaints, as well as how they pushed that Forbidden Siren was much more hardcore than other games of this ilk.In our review, you'll hear some chat on how Sightjacking is a very cool idea (and also how two of us think it doesn't work, and one of us thinks it does), darkness and fog, Commandos' mult-cam setup, orienteering, cautiously crouch-walking at the speed Solid Snake and Jack Carver move about on their bellies, the annoyance of ambiguity / the thrill of ambiguity, being aware of sound and light, awkwardly swinging a metal pipe, Shibito character models, mission objective 2, the Link Navigator, Butterfly Effect puzzles, the baffling Interaction List Menu system, a photo album that caught Josh's attention, ten characters that couldn't grab the attention of Adam, L.A. Noire, and classic lines of dialogue such as "I told you to wait in the car." After all that, the lads take you through what some of the critics were saying about the game around the time it came out, and then they give their final verdicts on whether Forbidden Siren is a Pass, a Play, or an Espionage Explosion. For those who would like to play along at home, we'll be discussing, reviewing and dissecting Manhunt on the next episode of Stealth Boom Boom.IMPORTANT LINKS TO THINGS

New episodes broadcast live on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/sotdcast Having just woken up and seeking stimulation, the guys focus on creating all the steaming, cloudy FOG FOG John Carpenter's THE FOG puns possible to make sure none get mist. Bound to being on topic, Tom's been on the Yu-Gi-Oh, and Chris is reminiscing about Pokemon Tourneys past. Striving to get us back, Matt's rewatched Twin Peaks 3 and revisited Silent Hill Homecoming, which leads on to an interesting discussion of the series post-Team Silent. Chris then launches himself into the breach with tales of For Honor and being taught a valuable lesson about the options menu. Other topics broadly lanced over include Alone In The Dark, Chinese click farms and Boris Johnson, obviously. This week's focus though was the slow-burning piratey-ghost tale of The Fog. Following some seriously dark shit, from a man of the cloth no less, Antonio Bay is now the home of a curse with an oddly specific kill count. The master John Carpenter from beginning to end employs great technique to build tension, and for the most part succeeds - except for maybe the bloated middle. Still the guys can't help but lapse into reverential talk of Carpenter's Escape series (twice) on their way to the movie's rather unfair conclusion. I guess you might want to check out your family tree for heinous acts your ancestors might have committed - y'know, just in case. Silent Hill: Secuelas: “Silent Hill: Revelation” (2012). Presupuesto: $50 M USD. Recaudación: $100 M USD. Año: 2006. Director: Christophe Gans. Actores: Radha Mitchell (Rose DaSilva), Sean Bean (Christopher DaSilva), Laurie Holden (Cybill Bennet) y Jodelle Ferland (Alessa Guillespie). Gente comienza a desaparecer.

This is a thing we're doing now, so keep an eye open for those. We wanted to tackle something really, REALLY spoopy for this years Spootober episode. So we tackled the 2006 movie based on the 1999 survival horror classic: Silent Hill. And we couldn't have asked for anyone better to cover this movie with than Lulu. What's with all this ash? What's her name again? Why is Boromir Sharpe in this movie? Do Miranda Rights not exist? Did they just meow at each other!?psst. we've actually done a bunch of these "goes to the movies" episodes. Check this page to see all of the released specials. Here's a sample of the full show notes - make sure to click through and check them out.Content WarningDue to the nature of the movie we talk about in this episode, we'd recommend that you don't listen to this one with little ones around. This film also deals with some pretty terrible things, whilst we don't actually talk about the terrible things, please take this as a trigger and/or content warning for harm befalling children. We've also left in all the swears, as it's an episode about a horror film. Please listen responsibly.Show NotesWe started the episode by heading to Silent Hill in our outfits. Lulu went as the Grim Reaper, Jay as a Necromancer, and Squidge as... well, Squidge. And finally, after 130 episodes, Jay go the intro rightHello Squidgey!- JayYou'd have thought it wasn't difficult to mess up, but he manages it on almost every episode. As Jay mentioned, this is Lulu's 16th appearance on the show - check this page for all of her appearances. Surprisingly, not all of them have been about Final Fantasy, too. Although, Lulu was distracted for a moment when thinking about her Hot Trash Daddy and decided that she needed a lobster bib because:it's easier to just fling it over the balcony then- LuluThoughts Going InWe didn't really discuss our thoughts on the film before tackling it, except to say that Lulu isn't a fan of the sequel.Nope. Burn it- LuluBut we did talk about our backgrounds regarding the games. Jay had played a little of the first one, the gave up; whereas Lulu and Squidge are the experts of the group, having played them all. There were a lot of references to the video game, as the director (Christophe Gans) is on record as saying that he is a fan of the original PlayStation game and even had members of team Silent Hill on set to oversea certain aspects of the movie. As such, at points it feels like "References: The Movie".And, of course, Sean Bean survives the movie. Which is one heck of an achievement. Why was he in the movie, you ask? Because the studio said:We can't sell a movie with an all female cast- Very stupid movie producersAnd not only is this bonkers but it's also bonkers - double bonkers, indeed. The PlotHere's a 10,000 ft view of the "plot", as we see it: SHAAARONN! Rose is running around in her sleepy clothes, because someone has gone missing - what's her name again? Cringe-fests and lack of chemistry between Mum and Daughter Let's not forget that Rose was wearing her socks to bed Because people on IMDB are like that: they're weird. They tag, like, "this is a film about..." and then it's like "horror", and "multilation", and "horribleness", and "socks"- Jay" Chekhov's Cross Travelling to Silent Hill in search of a script Even more lack of chemistry - cat noises does not mean that characters have bonded clenched so hard you turned your face into a fist- Squidge WKX-Weird Music on the radio "No credit cards for you!" - Boromir Sharpe The Silent Hill of the film is based on Centralia, Pennsylvania It's worth reading about Centralia, as it's fascinating. "I'm not supposed to talk to strangers" More chemistry between the cop and Sharon, than with Rose and Sharon Drive-by tattoos at a cafe? Running from the police is a bad idea It's the crash from intro to the video game Ash is falling, all around me; kid's gone missing, where's she gone? The fog exists, but only to be creepy ---About the FogSo the fog was included in the original game because the 3D models and environments in the original game were so detailed that the drawing distance for the game had to be very close to Harry Mason's character model. The folks over at Team Silent (the developers of the Silent Hill games) decided to hide this by adding a fog effect. This served a dual purpose of making everything look really creepy and hiding the incredibly close drawing distance. This was also why Harry picks up a broken radio, and uses that to know when the enemies are close by. Otherwise, the player would never know and would end up being ambushed by enemies they didn't know were right there.---The plot is that convoluted, in the early stages, that Jay became super confused and forgot a whole section of the movie: the first time Rose walks around in the town, before being arrested. Anyway, back to the plot... Press X to Sharron Store fonts are references to the game Let's play Silent Hill (1999) Jay and Lulu re-write the movie - this wasn't in the movie, but they did a great job of doing it in less than 30 seconds SYMBOLISM! ---Lulu mentions something when talking about symbolism:There's a lot of deep rooted symbolism in the Silent Hill games. And I think, as a game series, I'd honestly love to do a chat like this with you guys about the Silent Hill series; because so much symbolism-LuluWatch this space, folks. We're in the process of arranging something with some special guests.--- Meanwhile Rose is busy dropping her lighter and jacket Fus ro dah! and Jonny Cash Mis-direct mis-fires Boromir Sharpe tries to get some information out of a mechanic Boromir Sharpe starts phoning it in Rose gets arrested, but isn't read her Miranda Rights Cybil crashes because plot Cybil leaps into action, but not before taking her jacket off Squelchy things abound Rose takes a bus without taking a bus Meanwhile at the school, Rose finds a torch Lulu would be terrible in a zombie apocalypse - again, this isn't in the movie. But it was an important point to raise Full Show NotesMake sure to check out the full show notes for more discussion on the points we raise, some extra meta-analysis, some out-of-context screen grabs from the movie, and some links to related things. Are you a fan of the Silent Hill games? Having just woken up and seeking stimulation, the guys focus on creating all the steaming, cloudy FOG FOG John Carpenter's THE FOG puns possible to make sure none get mist. This week, the Clan reviews the classic survival horror Silent Hill Silent Hill Silent Hill was released in North America on January 31, 1999 in North America. It is a survival horror game, developed for the PlayStation. The game was developed by Team Silent, and published by Konami. Silent Hill features a third person camera view, and offers fully 3D environments. Silent Hill is considered a defining title in the survival horror genre due to its concentration on psychological horror, and the fact that you play an everyday regular normal guy, rather than a trained killer. Another interesting fact is the fog. The developers actually used the in game fog to mask the hardware limitations of the PlayStation, while also adding to the atmosphere of Silent Hill. The game has received positive reviews, and was a commercial success. The game currently has an 86 on Metacritic. Storyline The story revolves around a man named Harry and his daughter Cheryl. They are heading out on vacation, and just before driving into the town of Silent Hill, he swerves off the road to avoid hitting a little girl. Upon regaining consciousness, he realizes that Cheryl is missing, and sets out to find her. We meet up with Cybil Bennet, a police officer who works in a nearby town. Oh, and there are monsters running around trying to kill you. Harry also meets Dahlia Gillespie, Doctor Michael Kaufmann, director of Silent Hill’s Alchemilla Hospital. We also meet Lisa Garland, who worked at Alchemilla. Harry finds a symbol scattered throughout the town. Dahlia claims it will allow darkness to take over the town if it continues to multiply. Dahlia then reveals that the girl we swerved to avoid is a demon, and is responsible for the symbol’s duplication. Dahlia also urges Harry to stop the demon, because if he doesn’t, Cheryl will die. Cybil, the police officer from earlier, then attacks Harry in a Resident Evil-esque zombie fashion. But with a gun! You can either gun her down, or use a key item on her to restore her to normal. When the demon child reappears, she is captured within the Flauros that Dahlia previously gave to us. Dahlia reveals that she manipulated Harry into trapping it. It’s a phantasm of her daughter, Alessa, who possesses supernatural powers. Harry then wakes up in a crazy area called “nowhere”. He encounters Lisa here, who reveals that she is the same as the other monsters in the town, and begins to transform. We find out via a diary entry that Lisa had actually nursed Alessa during a secret hospitalization. Harry finds Dahlia with Cheryl and Alessa, charred. Seven years prior to the game, Dahlia had conducted a ritual to impregnate Alessa with the cult’s god through immolation. Alessa survived the sacrifice due to being the vessel, which rendered her immortal. Her ability to resist the ritual caused her soul to be bisected. One half of her soul went to Cheryl. Dahlia had cast a spell to draw Cheryl back to Alessa. Alessa created the symbols in town to prevent the birth. Now for the interesting part… This game has four different endings that can occur. They depend on whether or not Harry saves Cybil or discovers a bottle of Aglaophotis at Kaufmann’s apartment, or both. Aglaophotis can be used to dispel demonic forces, and grant protection against the forces for the user. The worst ending occurs if neither of these things are done; Alessa electrocutes Dahlia, and then attacks Harry. Harry then defeats her, and we hear Cheryl’s voice thanking Harry for freeing her, and Alessa vanishes. Harry then collapses, and the game shows his corpse in the crashed car. This ending implies that the entirety of the events took place in Harry’s delusional dying mind… Freaky! The “Bad +” ending features a living Cybil, and a missing Kauffman. After Cheryl’s voice and Alessa’s disappearance, Cybil convinces Harry to flee. In the “good” ending, Cybil dies, and Kaufmann shows up with the bottle of Aglaophotis, which he uses to force the deity out of Alessa. Kaufmann is revealed to have allied Dahlia and enabled Alessa’s hospitalization. Feeling betrayed, he forces the deity out of Alessa, causing her to vanish. After Harry defeats it, the deity disappears, and Alessa appears as a baby reincarnation of herself and Cheryl. The babe is given to Harry, and it enables their escape from nowhere and the nightmare is over. In the “good +” ending, Harry escapes with Cybil and the baby. Both good endings feature a transformed Lisa preventing Kaufmann from leaving, and throwing him into a pit. There’s a secret, joke ending, where we see Harry abducted by aliens. To wrap up our Resident Evil/Silent Hill series (for a while at least), the GH101 team (with special guest Vos) dive into Silent Hill 4: The Room and Resident Evil: Code Veronica. Oddly enough, while SH4 has often been regarded as not originally part of the franchise, it turns out it was always a Silent Hill game and developed by Team Silent but it is a different experience when compared to the games before it. In contrast, Resident Evil: Code Veronica was originally to be Resident Evil 3 and marks the ultimate form of what originally began with the traditional feel and "tank controls". Fred, Jam, and Vos break down each game and what makes them significant iterations in each series.
“This is a nightmare… It can’t be happening…” The last game in the series by Team Silent, Silent Hill 4: The Room is a game that so brazenly experiments with the established formula, the internet […] The post Silent Hill 4: The Room – Cane and Rinse No.163 appeared first on Cane and Rinse.
Ever since the 10/01 episode "Silent 3vil" released, we felt one thing was severely missing: everyone's impressions on Silent Hill 3. In honor of Halloween Fred, Jam, and Vos all got together 30 days later and had a little round table discussion about what we appreciate about the third and final Team Silent installment in the series.Note: This is a follow-up of the 10/01 episode, Silent 3vil.
