Case and Jmike are joined by Doug Lief (from the Nostalgium Arcanum podcast) to talk about a family that's pretty super, The Incredibles!   Overview   In Podcast episode 142 of Men of Steel, hosts Case Aiken and Jmike Folson, alongside guest Doug Lief, delve into a comprehensive analysis of Disney's The Incredibles through the lens of Superman fandom. They explore the film's connections to other superhero media, notably its references to 60s Batman and Fleischer Superman, while debating the film's overall tone, which Case describes as having an 'angry' directorial voice. The discussion emphasizes Mr. Incredible as a Superman analog, revealing how his secret identity as Bob Parr reflects an average man grappling with superhero responsibilities amid family dynamics. The team draws parallels between the family members' powers and their roles, likening the villain Syndrome to a failed fan archetype obsessed with eliminating exceptionalism. Additionally, they analyze the film's aging animation, contextualize its place in the superhero genre before the rise of the MCU, and celebrate its blend of action and relatable family themes. The episode culminates in discussing the film's unresolved questions about the necessity of superheroes in society, concluding that it adeptly balances the extraordinary with the everyday.   Notes ‍️ Introduction and Context (01:12 - 15:47) Case Aiken and Jmike Folson host the Men of Steel podcast with guest Doug Lief The discussion focuses on Disney's The Incredibles (2004) from a Superman fan perspective Doug mentions the movie's connections to Watchmen and other superhero media The hosts establish that the film is a love letter to superheroes with influences from 60s Batman, James Bond, and Fleischer Superman Case acknowledges he likes but doesn't love the movie, finding it has an 'angry' directorial voice ‍️ Mr. Incredible as Superman Analog (15:47 - 24:52) The group analyzes Mr. Incredible (Bob Parr) as a Superman analog Bob Parr's name means 'average' - perfect for a secret identity His job at an insurance company creates dramatic irony (helping after harm vs. preventing it) The hosts discuss Mr. Incredible's durability, strength, and physical capabilities The film explores the tension between superhero responsibility and family obligations The 'Bob Parr' identity has real value to him beyond just being a disguise ‍‍‍ Family Dynamics and Powers (24:52 - 39:20) The Incredibles compared to Fantastic Four but with a nuclear family structure Each family member's powers serve as metaphors for their roles: Elastigirl must 'bend over backwards' for her family Violet wants to be invisible/blend in as a teenager Dash wants to show off and stand out with his speed Holly Hunter praised for her performance as Elastigirl The married couple dynamic shows mature flirtation and partnership Sarah Vowell's performance as Violet highlighted despite not being a professional actress Syndrome as Villain (39:20 - 54:00) Syndrome analyzed as Jimmy Olsen gone evil or fan-turned-Lex Luthor His character represents fandom and mediocrity wanting to eliminate specialness Syndrome observes and counters heroes' weaknesses but fails to examine his own His fatal flaw is wearing a cape, which Edna Mode had warned against The group discusses connections to Alan Moore's works (Watchmen and Captain Britain) Syndrome's robot compared to the squid from Watchmen's ending Brad Bird reportedly denies Watchmen influence despite many parallels Jack-Jack and Supporting Characters (54:00 - 01:03:00) Jack-Jack has godlike powers (17 documented in the sequel) Compared to Franklin Richards from Fantastic Four Jack-Jack helps defeat Syndrome at the end of the film Edna Mode (voiced by Brad Bird) praised as an excellent character Her role as the Q-like gadget designer who incorporates fashion The group discusses superhero costume design elements Frozone and his 'Where's my super suit?' scene mentioned Animation and Film Context (01:03:00 - 01:16:40) The film's animation shows its age (from 2004) but holds up well due to stylization Technical limitations discussed (water effects, foliage, crowds) The hosts note the film predates the MCU (2008) and Nolan's Batman (2005) The Incredibles came at a transition point for superhero cinema The movie successfully balances superhero action with relatable family dynamics Character designs discussed (Mr. Incredible's face based on a Roman helmet) Final Battle and Themes (01:16:40 - 01:26:47) The Omnidroid battle showcases the family working together effectively Team power moves highlight each character's abilities and their coordination The question of 'do we need superheroes?' explored through the final battle Dash's athletic participation at the end (coming in second) compared to Superman hiding his abilities The film doesn't fully resolve questions about exceptional people's place in society The ending shows balance between superhero and ordinary life is beneficial Conclusions and Wrap-Up (01:26:47 - 01:38:04) The Underminer appearance sets up the sequel and references Mole Man from Fantastic Four The hosts appreciate the film's commentary on superhero tropes ('you caught me monologuing') The movie works well as both a superhero film and a family story Discussion about how the film has aged and its historical context in superhero cinema Podcast information and social media contacts shared Recommendation for Books that Burn podcast from the Certain POV network

In today's episode we tackle that question and ask you to dig deeper to see who really can't support our recovery but would actually undermine it or be neutral. I hope you enjoy learning to tell the difference between these and that you find the improved quality of life that comes from having a strong support system.

Help them through the transition. The people who you listen to the most will probably be on their way out. The only reason you should proactively make comments is if it's clear that organization would be better firing the current leader and finding a new one than living with the current leader. Question: What could you be accused of? What impact did you violation create?

It's time to chat about the golden age of Pixar. The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, and Cars (yes even Cars). Some absolutely amazing movies here, not so much with the games. All developed by THQ, these titles were all mediocre at best. Other than the very interesting and surprisingly fun Cars which had an amazing open world experience of Radiator Springs and some solid driving. Meanwhile The Incredibles couldn't wait 15 years and decided to make a video game sequel to the original movie, Rise of the Underminer with the John Ratzenburger reprising his role! Gosh, I just love your office. Tasteful decorations, and *gasp* did your child make this? My daughter, yes. - It’s beautiful. My daughter Violet is very creative. My sons… are more into destruction. Oh my daughter can wreck stuff with the best of them, don’t let the artwork fool you. - That's children, I suppose. Especially when you have 3 of them. And with powers to boot. One minute they're playing nicely, the next minute there's a literal tornado in the kitchen, the bathroom is sealed with a force field, and the lawn is on fire.  That sounds like a lot to handle. How do you manage? - Well the older 2 I can talk to about things. It takes a while, but they get it eventually. Jack-Jack, though, he's still a baby, and figuring out his powers. And bless Bob, he tries his best to wrangle them while I'm gone, but he gets frazzled so quickly.  Have you tried a babysitter? - Once. It did NOT go well.  Well, I’m not a couples therapist, but I am a happily married man, and I’ve learned that an open and honest discussion about expectations can help drastically reduce the stress in a marriage. You two need to be on the same page. - Oh, we are. Well, some of the time. That’s better than none of the time. When does it work best? - When we’re out there fighting the bad guys. Even after we took some time off to raise the kids, when we got back to it, it was like no time had passed. We were totally in sync with each other. Then we get home, and… And you’re off-base. - Yep. You know, we both have powers, but sadly neither of us can read minds. That would make things a lot easier. I’m not sure it would. That could just lead to more unmet expectations. The fact that you’re both powered doesn’t mean anything when it comes to communication. You have to be upfront about what you need and are willing to compromise on. You’re not going to get everything you want, but unless you tell him what you’re looking for, you’re not going to get anything. - I know. But where am I supposed to find the time? And the energy? And how do I figure out which thing to tackle first? Gosh, makes me wish the Underminer would show up. At least I know how to solve those kinds of problems. Punching things in the face only gets you so far. Trust me, I see it all the time in my line of work. -Well to be honest we never thought we would get to be back to doing any sort of punching. Now things have come full circle. It’s like one bad apple spoils the bunch. Bob had the itch longer, but I got to scratch it in a more sophisticated way once people saw that we could do good again.  But that doesn’t come close to translating to fulfilment. Sometimes I have a three-part system that I view relationships: love, work, and play. You’ve mentioned love, and work, but what sort of recreational stuff do you have going on in your life? -Are you kidding? Who has time for play when you have kids?! Well, do you play with your kids? -Jack-Jack of course, but those are things he needs to grow. Violet does her own thing, and that’s becoming its own hurdle. Dash is just so fast with everything...and I don’t mean his superpower. That’s not really what I meant. It’s important to spend time with your children, don’t get me wrong. However, you need some adult time, either alone, with Bob, others that you can relate to in the same sphere. -*pause* To be honest, that’s what being a superhero was about. It used to be that blend. Help the world, help ourselves. I know it’s changed, but...is it wrong to want it to be that way again? No, it’s not wrong to want things to be simple. What’s wrong is ignoring the complexities in order to be able to cope. If that’s how you’re looking at things, then you’ll never be able to fully address the problem. Does that make sense? - Definitely. I won’t reminisce too much. Those memories are a good part of what keeps me going. I need to remind myself of why my life is the way it is in the first place. This may sound harsh but...I didn’t dream of things going this way. In what way? -Actually...all of it. I planned for kids, but I didn’t know if they would be like us. I wanted a home, but I never knew we’d be a superteam. I wanted to make a difference, but I didn’t think I’d be told to go into hiding...or come out again! I’m not in a competition with Bob, but he always makes it sound like we are to him. I know I’m going around the same points again...maybe that’s the biggest problem. I see things my way, and I want my family to see things my way. We don’t even have to agree. Is that last part true? -*slightly defensive* of course it is! I’m not trying to be provocative. I’ve learned that many families have a competitive dynamic at baseline. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that. But what is the goal of winning battles when you don’t know what the war is? -Then  I… I don’t want to be right just to be right. I want Bob and the kids to agree with me because they realize that I want what’s best for us. Maybe I haven’t communicated that clearly enough. I can’t force them to do what I want, and I don’t want that either. I guess I’m just looking for a little more harmony, and I’m willing to take it however I can get it. Then you’re going to need to visualize what you want, and ask each of them what they want, and put it all together into one congruent package. Something you build together is more likely to last than something you build separately and jam together however you can. -This sounds almost exactly like dealing with Syndrome. *playful sarcasm* Ding ding ding! We have a winner! You get to mirror the construct of your hero team with your family life. Perhaps this also touches the proper nerve about the nostalgia you were raving about, too. -And what if Bob doesn’t buy it? What if Violet shuts down? What if Dash...um...dashes? I think it’s a lot to ask of people who don’t think on this wavelength to just go along with this sort of thing like everything is just peachy all of the time. You’re right, I make no guarantees. Yet, just like you hinted at, there’s a reason Bob connected with you in the first place. You know that. He sees the strength you have on the inside. If he’s like the countless others in a relationship, the ebb and flow shifts in that way. I hope he’ll step up to the plate like you want him to. -*melancholic, but actually hopeful* He’s told me when he’s not strong enough...that let me know he gets it once in a while. Ok...I actually think that family plan is the best course of action right now. I’m not going to over complicate it. - *suddenly serious* So who should I bring in next time for you to straighten them out? Bob? I bet you’ll see how wrong he is about everything That’s the opposite -And Violet needs to get in gear so she can really start to impress for her career I’m not a child psychia -And *whisper* I think Dash could use a stimulant to help with that undiagnosed ADHD, am I right?  You’re kind of pushing...oh boy *clearly nervous* -*pause, then laughing* relax, Doctor. I know better than that.  Don’t scare me like that! Too many people mean that stuff! - Sorry, Doc. I don’t get many chances to crack jokes with new people. Most of the people I meet these days are either stuffy politicians trying to shake hands and lie, or bad guys who need a fist to the jaw. But I like you. I’m glad this got set up. In this episode of PixMix, Patricia and Arun discuss about the 2018 animated film The Incredibles 2, which is a sequel to the 2004 film The Incredibles. The movie picks up right where the first movie left off with Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl, Dash, and Violet fighting against The Underminer. After that, the movie shifts towards Elastigirl trying to find the identity of a villain name Screenslaver as he hypnotizes people into dangerous situations. Meanwhile Mr. Incredible is trying his hardest to help Dash with math homework, Violet reconnect with Tony after having his memory wiped, and Jack-Jack with his new powers. When the movie premiered in theaters, it received positive reviews from critics and fans and is currently the fastest animated movie to reach $1 billion dollars in the box office. What do Patricia and Arun think of the movie? Was it worth waiting 14 years for the sequel? Listen and find out.

Welcome to the Ink 2 Screen podcast. I am your host, Amber Bosworth. I am the creator of Ink 2 Screen. A website and resource for beginning screenwriters that want free information and inspiration to help guide their writing. Plus we have monthly writing contests. Our next Monthly Writing Madness for June has now opened for Registration. Next month’s prize will be $150. Plus an artist profile on the website, your very own website link, and an exclusive interview on this podcast.   Now enough of that. Let's get back to today’s podcast. Today is all about The 3-Act Structure; The Film Paradigm. This is a basic overview of the structure that I have collected.   I’ve provided a great printout diagram of everything I’m brining up in this podcast. It is a collection of many sources. This is just a collaboration of things I’ve read and been taught through my schooling. I don’t claim any of it but doesn’t mean I’m not going to use it to help my listeners create amazing stories. Feel free to download and print it out at your convienience at www.ink2screen.net/page8. I’ll also provide the link in the show notes below this episode. This is something I’ve had pinned up in my office since I started writing.    Alfred Hitchcock said: “To make a great film you need three things – the script, the script and the script.”   Pages are all rough estimates.   Basic Film Paradigm made famous by Syd Field and then tweaked by many other gurus. The page count and percentage is based on a film of 120 pages. Act 1(Set Up)-25%/30 pages, Act 2(Confrontation) is 50%/60pages and Act 3 (resolution) is 25%/30 pages.   This includes the ascending action going all the way up through plot point #2 which begins the resolution or Act 3. Plot point is the turning point between Act 1 and Act 2. The descending action is just encompassed through just the 3rd Act. This is the basic film paradigm. And it was Aristotle that created the basic analysis here, simply put, it means any story has a beginning middle and an end.   For the sake of keeping this podcast short and sweet, I’m going to stick to one example to interweave into these acts: The Incredibles at 115mins, close to the 120 page form.   ACT 1: The Beginning/The Set Up pages 1-30 / 25%   1-10 pages: Ordinary world. This is from the previous podcast where you introduce your character and put in your Inciting Incident or Call to action. This is where it all hits the fan.    The Incredibles: 1-12 we get to meet Mr. Incredible and what a day in his life is like. Then on pages 13-15 we get the inciting incident that the super heroes have been outlawed. This forces our hero to go into hiding.   10-30 pages: Refusal of the call. We’ve all been there when we watch the hero reject what needs to be done. Of course, we have seen a lot of movies that this goes on throughout but this should be the main/strongest that it is. Because next comes crossing the first threshold by page 30. This is the Plot Point One / Turning point one / Awakening / The Point of no return. However you want to see it, this is it.   The Incredibles: This is a great example because Mr. Incredible refuses his new life. And by page 30, Mr. Incredible has gotten back on the wagon to saving lives. He listens to the scanner and saves lives in the burning building. Here is the first plot point because then we get pushed into the next part when he is recruited by Mirage.   ACT 2: Middle/The Confrontation pages 31-90 / 50%    30-60: include test, allies, and enemies. Mid point right near the middle. keep everyone locked in.   The Incredibles: By page 60, Mr. Incredible/Bob has defeated the first robot and is about to go on the next one. This will enter the next inmost cave where the true intentions of Buddy.   60-90 Approaching inner most cave. At the end, to transition to the resolution, is the Inmost Cave(Plot Point 2).   The Incredibles: By 90-100, the whole family has joined the fight to help save Bob.     ACT 3: End/The Resolution 91-120 / 25%   91-110: Final Push/Seizing the Sword   The Incredibles: The final push. The whole family have now gotten together to save the city against Buddy.    110-120: Return with Elixir   The Incredibles: Buddy is defeated and the family has found a new acceptance of their powers and family dynamic. They have created a new “Ordinary World” and then it breaks apart again giving us the Underminer. This gives us another glimpse of how the family dynamic has improved and they are working together.    I’ve attached the script so you can do your own evaluation. Reading scripts is a great way to learn and grow. You can also download this at www.ink2screen.net/page8   Now, remember, this is just a suggested format. Find what works for you. These are only guidelines. Take from it what you will because it does work but don’t limit yourself to just these guidelines. It is your story. Tell it the way you want but do it in a way to entertain.   If you enjoyed this podcast, be sure to subscribe to it no matter where you are listening from. We don our super suits one more time and get back into the fray with Incredibles 2. Brad Bird is posing some questions here that we really enjoyed even though the movie plot has a few holes and never truly resolves. Helen is called on to help bring Supers back, and Bob must juggle the daily heroics of home life. But when a new villain arises with a sinister plot, the Parrs meet the challenge together! We'll be back next with the Ballad of Buster Scruggs, catch the newest Coen brothers film on Netflix and then give us a listen. Show notes at: http://www.actualanarchy.com/117 Presented by www.ActualAnarchy.com Robert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective. We use movies as a starting point for people who may not be familiar with this way of thinking.   Discussion of the plot and decisions that characters make in relation to morality and violations of the non-aggression principle are our bread and butter. We also will highlight and discuss any themes or lessons from Austrian Economics that we can glean from the film. The point is to show what anarchy actually is with instances that are presented in film. We publish at least once per week; and occasionally will do specials surrounding holidays or events (elections/olympics) and have guests. SUBSCRIBE, RATE AND REVIEW ON APPLE PODCASTS (or iTUNES)

EP188: Incredibles 2 Was Worth The Wait

The Disney Movie Review

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 12, 2018 62:08

Who would have thought we'd see a black President of the United States before we got a sequel to The Incredibles? Now that it is finally here, it was well worth the wait.  Incredibles 2 smashed Finding Dory's record as the top opening weekend for an animated film. The $180+ million weekend haul would be impressive for a live-action film and, to put it in perspective, that's more than Captain America: Civil War made in its opening weekend. It's safe to say that fans were pretty excited about this one and the movie did not disappoint. We pick up with the Parr family at the exact second we left off with them in The Incredibles. Superheroes are still illegal, but that doesn't stop the Incredibles from facing off with The Underminer. What happens in that fight propels most of the action in the rest of the movie, including Bob staying at home with the kids while Helen goes to save the day. Mr. Incredible At Home The best part of the movie is the way writer and director Brad Bird positioned Bob at home. He isn't some bumbling oaf who doesn't know how to vacuum or start a washing machine. Instead, he is the incredibly relatable dad who is doing his best to take care of his family. And yet he provides plenty of laughs along the way.  Scientists have pretty much proven that women are better at multitasking than men are, a talent that is particularly handy when handling three kids. In Incredibles 2, we see Bob struggling to keep up with math homework, first dates, and a baby that can walk through walls and fights raccoons. I found myself completely identifying with Mr. Incredibles struggle to even process everything that is going on in his family, all while trying not to let Helen know how much of a struggle it is. And when Brad Bird reprises his role as Edna, the comedy moves from good to great. Elastigirl In The Spotlight One of the strengths of the film is also its biggest weakness. Elastigirl takes center stage in this outing, catching the bad guys and leaving her family at home. It sounds like a big step forward for women who are “leaning in,” but the story is really one-sided. We get to see Elastigirl's perspective as the hero in the spotlight, but we never get Helen's perspective as a working mother after years of being a stay at home mom. In fact, the one time she is directly asked about work-life balance, our heroine dodges the questions to go pursue more hero work. This could be a casualty of Pixar not allowing enough of a female voice in their productions. Pixar's Second-Best Sequel That aside, Incredibles 2 is still a fun journey for the entire family. The real identity of the villainous Screen Slaver is a little too easy to spot, but their motivation is compelling and something that goes a little deeper than a mustache-twirling bad guy. Without a doubt, this is Pixar's second-best sequel, right behind Toy Story 3. However, it suffers from letting Elastigirl shine and leaving Helen behind. Much of her character development was given to Bob at home so any message meant for a strong female character is only partially delivered. For that, it gets an 8.5/10 in my book.

John Ratzenberger is the only actor to participate in every Pixar film. Beginning with the charming and witty Hamm the piggy bank in Toy Story, reprised in Toy Story 2 and 3, there came P.T. Flea in A Bug's Life, Yeti the abominable snowman in Monsters, Inc., a school of moonfish in Finding Nemo, the Underminer in The Incredibles, Mack the truck in Cars/Cars 2, Mustafa the waiter in Ratatouille, John in WALL-E, Tom the construction worker in Up and Gordon in Brave. He is currently a recurring character on the FX hit TV show, LEGIT.
