As Black women, and especially mothers, one of the things we have to come to terms with is how, historically, we've often been treated as vessels—completely lacking our own agency. Whether it was our enslaved ancestors made to give birth with no compassion or downtime or the current discrepancies that exist in Black maternal health, there's no shortage of examples of mistreatment in Black motherhood. Amazingly, though, there are a number of women who are using their time and resources to change that dynamic for others and for our future generations.Today in honor of Black Maternal Health Week, you'll hear one of my favorite episodes of Mamaste to date. I brought together five amazing mothers who are pushing the culture forward and taking agency over our own health when it comes to pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum experience.Join me as I welcome Ericka Dorsey and Tamesha Valverde, co-founders of Flourishing Families, Karesha Boyd, Flourishing Families doula/advocate, Alia McCants, Founder of Spelmoms Facebook group, and Vanessa Simmons, Founder & CEO of Normalize Breastfeeding. We're talking about their experiences with motherhood, what their time breastfeeding meant to them, and the incredible importance of giving ourselves grace and space as mothers. In This Episode, You Will Learn:A little about everyone and their passions and superpowers (08:18)Tamesha's incredible experience helping out a friend with twins (15:00)How Ericka became an advocate for breastfeeding (18:16)The group's thoughts on formula feeding and its usefulness (22:44)The issues surrounding selling breast milk for profit, especially in the Black community (24:50)The group's advice to soon-to-be mamas and how they can advocate for themselves (31:17)How the dismissal of Black women's choice is ingrained in our DNA, but we can reclaim that agency (35:44)Connect with My Guests:Flourishing FamiliesFlourishing Families on InstagramEricka Dorsey on LinkedInEricka Dorsey on InstagramTamesha Valverde on LinkedInTamesha Valverde on InstagramNew Beginnings Birth ConsultingAlia McCants on FacebookAlia McCants on InstagramKaresha Boyd on LinkedInKaresha Boyd on InstagramVanessa Simmons on Normalize BreastfeedingVanessa Simmons on InstagramLet's Connect!Website Hosted on Acast. From birth it's estimated we hear the word no 400x per day. It's amazing we try anything new because that's a lot of negative and limiting conditioning. In this episode, the dynamic polymath, Angela Marie Hutchinson, explains the life skill I wish I'd learned a lot sooner: How to redirect your no's to Create Your Yes. Angela, who is a showrunner, screenwriter, producer, television host, working mom and former talent agent, created this actionable 12-step strategy for success based on her TEDx talk Create Your Own Yes, When You Keep Hearing No. Her advice is both inspiring and practical. My key takeaways are: Progress is success Track your success and look for patterns so you can replicate what works for you Measure your inchstones instead of the milestones Get unstuck by showing up and being generous Don't just look ahead - use your peripheral vision too For nearly a decade, Angela has produced a diverse portfolio with her media company, BiH Entertainment. She also works as a career coach, public speaker and business consultant. Angela's clients call her The Dream Builder. In 2005, Angela founded BReaKiNG iNTo HoLLyWooD, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that helps entertainment professionals pursue their careers. Repped at The Gersh Agency, Angela is actively developing and producing numerous projects with active development deals at a top production company. Angela is also the creator and executive producer of the 2021 Facebook Watch series, “Asking for a Friend,” hosted by Vanessa Simmons. As a filmmaker, Angela wrote, produced and cast the feature film, “Hollywood Chaos,” also starring Vanessa Simmons. Angela has been recognized as a media and arts trailblazer by the U.S. Congress, Los Angeles mayor and Los Angeles city council. Follow Angela on Instagram and Twitter at @livewithangela and check out her work at www.createyouryes.com. For more insights on how to work through no's listen to producer Dave Noll's epsiode on positivity. In Dave's experience, it takes 29 no's to get to your yes. https://www.abelintermedia.com/podcasts/positivity-dave-noll/

Pamela Henkel and Yashica Mack first became acquainted while participating in Les Brown's Power Voice System training program and Jon Talarico's Thinking Into Results coaching program. During an interview, Pamela revealed to Yashica that she had a vision of a book that would change the world. Pamela stated that this book was placed in her heart, but she had not yet acted upon it. Yashica was intrigued and inspired by Pamela's vision, and so it began; these two visionary authors were called to collaborate and create an anthology that would ultimately bring together more than 35 women to share their stories and offer hope. This episode highlights collaborating author Vanessa Simmons. In 2014, Ghanaian-American mother and photographer Vanessa Simmons authored the Normalize Breastfeeding® movement to address the taboo of public breastfeeding in modern society. Her mission was to document diverse variations of normal infant feeding across cultures and delivery methods of human milk. Through Simmons' viral blog, her photographic speaking tour, philanthropy, and artistic inspiration, she mobilized and motivated thousands of women to share their breastfeeding photos on social media. After a very successful first year, she reached out to the Mayor of San Diego to proclaim June 27th the International Day to Normalize breastfeeding, in support of the worldwide anniversary event! Certified Lactation Educator Counselor and Blacktivist, Vanessa Simmons is now speaking out at conferences and events across the country to eliminate general miseducation around the topic. On the Normalize Breastfeeding podcast, she interviews guests about experiences, advocacy, and activism within the infant feeding community worldwide. As a public speaker, Simmons is focused on transforming the modern mindset around the natural yet difficult task of breastfeeding. Vanessa trains lactation professionals to better understand and connect with millennial families online. She creatively motivates and inspires families to be mindful that this is a time to be cherished, and although fleeting, it is also a time to reinvent what will be acceptable for feeding generations of the future. Purpose by Design welcomes Vanessa Simmons, first and foremost a child of the Most-High Jesus Christ. Following that, she is a motivational coach, wife of 15 years to her husband, mother of 3 kids, collaborative author of ``Women of the Power Voice”, speaker and mentor to hundreds of women. She is a motivator for all women alike to bring out their power voice inside of them, helping them see themselves like God sees them. She speaks about mental health and how it is necessary to SPEAK to someone about it, and get help. Vanessa goes into detail about how in 2007 her life hit rock bottom. She was having a baby, she was starting a business and she could not control herself, nor did she know how to deal with her issues. She was living a life of depression, how lack of sleep pushed her over the edge to the point she needed to be hospitalized. She goes into depth about how one of the times she was at the hospital, she explains how though her eyes were open, she only saw black. There was nothing she could see but pitch-black. She knew she was in a body-bag. When a man unzipped the bag, saw she was alive he took Vanessa where she needed to go. Next thing - Vanessa woke up in a hospital bed. She believes that the man who unzipped the body bag was an encounter with an angel - something she will never forget. Vanessa goes into more details in the International Best Seller book, ‘Women of the Power Voice' (in the Links Section) - where you can read all about it. She talks about the importance of immersing yourself in Scripture, and talking to God about everything in your life. Vanessa shares how she always aspired to be a speaker, and at a pivotal point in her life, it all came to the surface and she realized she needed to take action once she came across Mr. Les Brown, the one and only. Story, Vision, and Voice - she talks about what these three powerful words mean to her. Vanessa shares how it was hard to get her story out for a while based on her own perception of herself, and how paradigm shifts MATTER. Let God take your story, and touch people's lives. Surrender to who you will become. She talks about surrendering to your future self, and owning that person and being that person and trusting God through the process.
