Devin: What do you see as your superpower?Denise: I think my superpower is communication and being a catalyst, a networker. So connecting people together is probably my most important superpower.“The inspiration was actually my husband's kung fu group, believe it or not,” says Denise Hayman-Loa, CEO of Carii, which operates Connective, of the company's origin, eight years ago. “It's a kung fu group that's global.”The organization of her husband's, Wun Fie Loa's, group includes local chapters with regional, national and global leadership and organizational layers. Participants had trouble communicating with all the different layers to coordinate training and retreats. “So, he—my husband—had the genius idea of coming up with this local, yet global, connection,” Denise says. “It's a whole ecosystem of connected communities.”“Our community platform is very robust, and it has all the features one would need to both communicate and collaborate, but also to take action,” she says. The “actions” function is a project management tool. “We purposely called it ‘actions' because a lot of our clients said we want people to not just talk but to take action around causes.”There is a free, small group option on the platform, along with various affordable, self-managed options. Most clients, however, opt for a white-label option where the Connective manages more of the setup and administration. The company hosts a variety of communities. One is a partnership Denise leads with Peter Fusaro and Don Schreiber called Connected Earth. Free to join, the online community features content from FinTech.TV.“Connected Earth is all about connecting impact investors with the impact companies and also creating a whole community around education, around impact, around different impact investments and sharing that knowledge and insight,” Denise says. She says Earth stands for ecology, agriculture, real estate, technology and health care or humanity.A few years ago, Denise and Wun discussed why they continued to do the hard work of leading a startup. “I turned to him, and he turned to me, in almost the same time and said, ‘I want to make the world a better place,'” she says.Connective communities differ from social networks in various ways, including the absence of algorithms and the fact that clients own their data. With multiple levels of privacy, a community can be made entirely private.Connective is the embodiment of Denise's superpower: catalytic networking. How to Develop Catalytic Networking As a SuperpowerAs a catalytic networker, Denise says, “If you say to me, ‘Do you know anybody who does X?' I can think of people who do X and connect you with them.”While she believes that some of her ability is innate—she describes herself as an extrovert—she offered some advice for strengthening this ability.* Think positively. “I think you have to get out of yourself and think positive thoughts about connecting with other people, that it can only be good things and it can only produce more action and not less,” she says.* Build on shared values. “Surround yourself with people you like. And care about who have common philosophies,” she says.* Try it. “I think you can practice by trying it, by thinking about who I know and who should they know, and what they know,” Denise says. “Sometimes it's connecting people to people.”* Share knowledge. “I think a lot of it has to do with knowledge sharing and thinking about what other people do that you know, and what might help them do it better,” she says. “It might be a book you read; it might be an article you read; it might be a newsletter that just came across your desk. Whenever I read anything, any meaningful newsletter, I think about people.”* Keep learning. “I'm the daughter of a literature professor, so I grew up reading,” Denise says. “For me, part of my day is to learn something new every day.”By following Denise's example and advice, you can make catalytic networking a superpower enabling you to do more good. Travis also shares how the diagnosis of narcolepsy type 1 affected the entire family. Claire and Travis reflect on the co-morbid and behavior issues that arise for children with narcolepsy.  Welcome to the radio magazine that brings you news, commentary and analysis from a Black Left perspective. I’m Glen Ford, along with my co-host Nellie Bailey. Coming up: Black people get the worst health care in the United States, but we’ll talk with a doctor and author who says Blacks also pay more for bad health outcomes; and, a researcher on education says Black and brown students have every right to be outraged at the racist treatment they are subjected to in US schools.  Brazil has long been a killing ground for Black and brown people, but the carnage has increased with the election of far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, who some call the Donald Trump of South America. In just three months, police in Rio de Janeiro killed 434 people, most of them young Black men. We spoke with Joao Costa Vargas, a professor of anthropology at the University of California, at Riverside. Dr. Costa Vargas is from Brazil, and is author of the book, “The Anti-Black City: Police Terror and Black Urban Life in Brazil.” We asked him if Bolsonaro is encouraging police massacres of young Blacks. We all know that Black folks are disproportionately given subprime loans by banks. But, Dr. Leslie Hinkson says, the same is true in healthcare. Dr. Hinkson is co-editor of the new book, “Subprime Health: Debt and Race in U.S. Medicine. The corporate media has long been obsessed with violence in urban schools, but they seldom consider the violence that the schools exert against Black and brown students. Dr. Connie Wun is an analyst an researcher who advocates for women and girls of color. Dr. Wun wrote an influential article in The Feminist Wire titled, “Racialized and Gendered Violence Permeates School Discipline.” She begins the article with the plight of Jada Williams, an eighth-grade student in Rochester, New York.

Toward the beginning of our journey together, Tira, Bash, and Peter found an ancient text that pointed them to the four Jewels of Edelenn, cities of learning that contained more information to help fight against a growing evil in the world of Vardalon. The third Jewel was the city of Tuo Nue, a beautiful mountainside place located along the eastern ridges of Dao Huin. In an isolated monastery above the city, the friends learned more about the mysterious pillars through a holy chant called The Inner Light. This special episode provides the text in a standalone format for easy reference. Here's the text: Holy chant - The inner light  All light is divine though some cleanse and purify. Heed these words, my son.  In the high mountains scents of lilac on warm winds carry away woe.  Lying on my back, long grass tickling at my cheek, smooth stone underfoot.  A stream bubbles by; sweet waters laughing and bright fall in curtained mist.  From here I can see the land of Dao Huin spread out, a tapestry fine.  Across the gorges to the north the pillar fine stands in crystal splendor  It rises high; light cuts dark, pushes back shadow so it flees in shame.  Two more such I know, great pillars standing proudly though in distant lands:  The first was eastward in islands warmed by the sun--  Kis-ra of the boats.  Far north the other, Trun the inhospitable, dark with ice and snow.  These all stood in light like beacons in a great storm that guide wand’rers home.  My heart grows cold at thoughts of the dark pillars. Let all learn from me!  One lay to the north upon my travels there. The mountains grew so cold!  An uncouth people gave that sad land a sad name: it was Wun-hai-de.  The other I found in a place of thick jungles and creeping creatures.  Here the pillar stood deep in rank and clutching vines: shrouded Mu-nu-ka.  I fled these places, cold fear chasing at my heels, ready to be home.  My lesson, my son: Seek the light only, for dark leads but to despair. ----- We used an excellent Battlebards music track. After coming back from a retreat for Asian American women, I have fostered a deeper appreciation for physical spaces dedicated solely for Asian women. That’s why Dr. Connie Wun is here today to share about her upcoming launch of #ImReady, being held from November 3rd-4th, 2018. She will be sharing how she founded her own organization for AAPI women as the director of AAPI Women Lead, “an intergenerational organization that strengthens the social and political power of AAPI communities through the leadership of AAPI Women-identified, women and girls in solidarity with other communities of color.” “The #ImReady Movement aims to strengthen the progressive political and social platforms of Asian and Pacific Islander communities in the US through the leadership of self-identified AAPI women and girls.  Our goal is to challenge and help end the intersections of violence against and within our communities. We do this work in solidarity with other communities of color. The #ImReady Movement raises visibility around self-identified AAPI women and our experiences with #MeToo, racial discrimination, war, immigration, and more. It also celebrates the leadership and power of AAPI women in Education, Business, Technology, and Politics. At the conferences, we bring together AAPI women leaders and our supporters to learn from one another, tell our stories, and to highlight our diverse leadership stories. We invite you to join us to better understand the complex Asian and Pacific Islander diasporas, histories, and experiences. We invite you to come honor the stories and leadership of our communities. We are bringing together some of the most brilliant people to explore what it means to be a self-identified AAPI woman in the United States. We know you are one of them.” Connie Wun, Ph.D., is co-founder of AAPI Women Lead, a non-profit organization that helps to support the progressive social and political platforms of Asian and Pacific Islander communities in the U.S through the leadership of self-identified women and girls. She has spent the last 20 years dedicating her work to ending violence against women and girls of color as a professor, high school teacher, organizer and activist, and mentor. She is also the founder and director of Transformative Research, a consultancy that conducts and trains organizations on community-driven research and data analysis. Her work is informed by her experiences of being born in Oakland, CA, raised throughout working class communities of color in the Bay Area, and as the daughter of Vietnamese refugees. Dr. Wun is currently a Visiting Scholar in the Women and Gender Studies Department at San Francisco State University. She is a former National Science Foundation Fellow, American Association of University Fellow, UC Berkeley Chancellor's Fellow, Mills College Research at the Intersections Fellow, and EdTrust-West Fellow. Some of her publications can be found on Truth-out.org and Feminist Wire as well as in Critical Sociology; Journal of Educational Policy; Race, Ethnicity and Education; and book anthologies on race, gender, school discipline and violence.
