Welcome to Campfire Classics, a Literary Comedy Podcast!! After three weeks away, Heather is back! Which means all of those euphemistic jokes (alliterative or otherwise) that you've been missing are back.  With a vengeance. Like, a big one... Ken picked the story for Heather to read. It's by previous a new author in the Campfire Classics catalogue name Flora Annie Steel. She's the daughter of a wealthy English family during the height of the British Empire, so  naturally we're all holding our breath just hoping she doesn't write anything socially problematic. On this show, our specialty is sequels, sequels, and more sequels.  From the good ones, to the bad ones, to the really ugly ones, we'll be covering them all!  We've got homicidal maniacs that won't stay in the grave, sci-fi epics whose stories cannot be told in a single tale, and much much more.  For our 28th episode, we'll be taking on the often overlooked "WARLOCK: THE ARMAGEDDON" from 1993. This Part Two to the original 1989 classic Warlock was directed by the late Anthony Hickox (Full Eclipse, Hellrasiser III: Hell On Earth, Waxwork 1 & 2) and starred the late Julian Sands (Arachnophobia, Leaving Lost Vegas, Boxing Helena) as the titular Warlock once again. Supporting cast is as solid as 90's horror can get with roles played by Joanna Pacula, Bruce Glover, Chris Young, Paula Marshall, R.G. Armstrong, Charles Hallahan, Zach Galligan, George "Buck" Flowers and more.  This sequel finds our suave Warlock on a quest to unleash satan upon the world and battling against an order of Druids in his way.  Join our regular hosts Cameron Scott and Eric Phillips as they dissect and take a deep dive into a world filled with black magic, runestones, Druids, flesh maps and satanic panic! Enjoy!   "Picasso. Definitely Picasso."

Two movies from 1993 and the stories behind them here: both of which had their fair share of off-set drama. RoboCop 3 was supposed to be quickly followed by RoboCop 4, yet financial problems with parent company Orion Pictures led to a change of plan - not least when Orion went bankrupt. In the midst of this was an idea to make a RoboCop film with a PG-13 rating too. Boxing Helena originally attracted Madonna to the title role, but this micro-budget independent movie gained infamy not for the film itself, but for the court case that ensued when potential star Kim Basinger then dropped the project. We've always loved Julian Sands, and were saddened to hear of his disappearance and the revelation of his passing in 2023. To celebrate his life and career, we discuss a personal favorite, along with a pair of campier entries that, if nothing else, are fun to laugh about. What happens when a warlock escapes the clutches of death, travels through a portal three centuries into the future, to locate three parts of The Grand Grimoire to undo creation? Well, you'd better believe that a determined witch-hunter follows to try to stop him! Julian Sands is Warlock (1989)!Not into warlocks and all that stuff? Well, how about Julian Sands as an infuriatingly meek surgeon who opportunistically uses a hit-and-run accident to imprison, and physically alter,  the woman of his dreams? Probably not a particularly healthy thing to do. It's a story of obsession and possession, with some questionable acting. But hey, if Boxing Helena (1993) is a match for your fetish, you do you.And then from there, if you thought that the acting in Boxing Helena was bad, get ready for some of the most remarkably poor acting you have ever seen from a complete cast. Thankfully, Julian Sands returns as the warlock, the one marginal bright spot. Though it probably would have helped if these actors had some decent dialogue to work with. However, as it stands, Warlock: The Armageddon (1993) is probably best used as a device to torture your enemies.

One of the most notorious – and least seen – erotic narrative films of the 90s, Boxing Helena was the misbegotten passion project of Jennifer Lynch, daughter of David Lynch. Four years after Boxing Helena, the elder Lynch released one of his most controversial films, Lost Highway, which tackles similar themes as Boxing Helena, including male sexual fragility and the “Madonna-Whore” complex. Today we'll talk about how Boxing Helena became bigger as a punchline than a movie, and we'll trace David Lynch's career as a provocateur to try to explain why his excavation of the dark, sexual core of Americana was celebrated when he made Blue Velvet, and pilloried a dozen years later when he made Lost Highway.
