Episode Summary Evan shares his story as a third-generation Jehovah's Witness whose family joined the organization during a period of marital vulnerability. After his father died of HIV-related complications when Evan was just three years old, the family faced intense judgment and stigma within the congregation, leading them to relocate to a rural "compound" in North Carolina for a fresh start. Growing up, Evan was fueled by the "resurrection hope"—the promise that if he remained obedient and "did more" for the organization, he would eventually be reunited with his father. The episode explores the heavy psychological toll of this upbringing, including the "bloodguilt" placed on children to convert their peers and the "reverse parenting" Evan performed while his mother struggled with severe mental health issues. Evan details his transition from a socially unprepared "clip-on tie" child to a rebellious teenager leading a double life, which eventually culminated in a judicial committee and his expulsion at age 20. Now 40, Evan reflects on his journey of rebuilding his own identity, the "superpower" of personal autonomy, and how he created a "chosen family" outside the walls of the Kingdom Hall. Key Takeaways Resurrection Hope as Leverage: The organization uses the grief of losing a parent to "double down" on a child's commitment, making their future reunion dependent on constant religious performance. The "Cage" of Protection: Evan deconstructs the common JW illustration that the organization is a protective "cage" in a shark-infested ocean, arguing that a cage is still a restricting cage regardless of the perceived safety it provides. Autonomy as a Superpower: Leaving the organization provides a "clean slate" where an individual can finally choose their own morals, circle of friends, and identity without institutional permission. Institutional Gaslighting: The organization's culture is designed to make members doubt themselves and their own perceptions, effectively teaching obedience over identity. Financial and Emotional Retaliation: Even after leaving, members may face continued attempts at control, such as Evan's mother attempting to commit tax fraud involving him or demanding rent from her "checking out" teenage son. Direct Quotes "Autonomy is the coolest thing in the world. And once you have it, it never stops." "You learn obedience, not identity." "Conditional love is not love. Everything in the organization is conditional." Everyone heard "grand jury" and filled in the rest themselves. Charges must be coming. Someone is about to be arrested. The system is finally moving. Except the Jackson County DA clarified the same day: referring a case to a grand jury is the default pathway when a death in the county cannot be readily explained. The referral itself does not mean law enforcement suspects foul play. This episode cuts through the noise and explains what a Mississippi grand jury actually does. Not the social media interpretation. The real one — where a panel of citizens convened by a circuit court judge reviews evidence in a sealed proceeding and decides whether probable cause exists to bring formal charges.Probable cause is the lowest bar in the system. Clearing it does not produce a guilty verdict. It produces a formal charge — an indictment — and the case then moves to a trial with an entirely different jury and a much higher standard of proof. What makes the grand jury significant in this case is a tool most observers skip past: the authority to subpoena witnesses. Every person summoned enters that sealed room individually. They swear an oath. Their lawyer stays outside. And the questions they face carry legal consequences if they lie. In a case where the group that went to Horn Island with Nolan has offered stories that directly contradict a separate witness, that forced testimony — solo, sworn, behind closed doors — could produce clarity that no press conference ever will.Autopsy results from two separate examinations remain outstanding. The agreed-upon joint review of Nolan's cellphone data has not occurred. Witness accounts remain unreconciled. Whether the grand jury has what it needs to act depends on how much of that evidence is assembled before the case lands on their table.END LINKS:Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? A great ending is about much more than resolving the plot. Why do satisfying story endings stay with us for years, while others leave us empty? In this video, I explore the psychology of story endings. When we think about writing endings, we often focus on tying up loose ends or delivering a dramatic finale. But endings serve a much deeper purpose. They complete the character's transformation, reveal the story's true meaning, and fulfill the archetypal pattern that gives stories their enduring psychological power. In this post/podcast, I explore why endings matter—not only for craft, but as one of story's most important symbolic functions. We talk about: • Why the meaning of a story is found in its ending • How endings reveal a story's theme • Why transformation requires completion • The Death/Rebirth cycle at the heart of story structure • Why endless stories often lose their psychological resonance • The difference between a long story and a story that refuses to end • What Supernatural and the Marvel Cinematic Universe can teach us about satisfying endings • Five practical principles for writing endings that feel inevitable, meaningful, and emotionally complete Whether you're writing a standalone novel or planning a long-running series, understanding the psychology behind story endings can help you create stories that leave readers with a lasting sense of meaning, transformation, and completion. The most persistent problem that the Church in Acts faced wasn't persecution or competing beliefs. It was division. As the Church expanded into new countries and cultures, the differences between the Jews and Gentiles came to a head. In the end, they found a unity that did not erase their differences. It empowered them for mission. The same can be true for us. (Acts 15:1-19) https://restorationlex.com/reflectionguide/
Bill Kanasky, Jr., Ph.D. talks about how to get a witness back on track when they slip up during the deposition. Since it is nearly inevitable that mistakes will be made by the witness during questioning, this must be addressed directly with the witness during the prep to help forewarn and desensitize them to when they make a cognitive mistake during the deposition. The much more difficult mistakes to overcome are emotional mistakes that witnesses make when they go into the survival responses of fight or flight. These mistakes must also be addressed directly in prep by training witnesses to recognize what their emotional triggers are, to identify them occurring in real-time, and to self-correct and/or request a break when they notice it happening. Forcing these emotional responses during the prep is the key to the witness learning how to identify and manage their reactions. Watch the video of this episode here: https://youtu.be/KMhDoJtnYUo
What leads someone to believe they have experienced contact with non-human intelligences? In this remarkable episode of The ‘X' Zone, Rob McConnell welcomes Beverly Trout to share her extraordinary personal story as a lifelong alien experiencer and alleged abductee. At 93 years of age, Beverly recounts the experiences she says have shaped much of her life, describing encounters she believes involved extraterrestrial beings and unexplained phenomena. She discusses how these experiences affected her personal relationships, worldview, and understanding of humanity's place in the universe, while reflecting on decades of living with memories that many people find difficult to comprehend. Throughout the interview, Rob and Beverly explore the broader subject of alleged alien encounters, the emotional impact such experiences can have on individuals, and why reports of abduction phenomena continue to be studied and debated by researchers. The conversation recognizes that accounts of extraordinary experiences are interpreted in different ways by investigators, scientists, psychologists, and experiencers themselves. Whether you're interested in UFOs, extraterrestrial encounters, consciousness, or firsthand accounts of unexplained phenomena, this episode offers a compelling opportunity to hear one woman's personal story and the questions it raises about one of the most enduring mysteries of our time.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.Please note that all XZBN radio and/or television shows are Copyright © REL-MAR McConnell Meda Company, Niagara, Ontario, Canada – www.rel-mar.com. Your rights might be real, but they might also be the thing keeping someone from seeing Jesus. We open 1 Corinthians 9 and follow Paul as he defends his apostolic authority, then does something shocking: he voluntarily lays down legitimate privileges so the gospel can move faster and farther. That single choice becomes a mirror for modern Christian life, where personal freedom, public opinion, and “I deserve this” can quietly outrank our witness. We get practical about where this hits home. We talk about speech, self-control, and the difference between what we're allowed to do and what actually builds up other people. Paul's strategy is not compromise; it's mission. He finds common ground with Jews, Gentiles, and those who feel weak in faith, while staying anchored to obedience to Christ. Along the way, we name today's cultural idols and distractions, from status chasing to the nonstop pull of our phones, and ask what it looks like to live inside a culture without being owned by it. Then we lean into Paul's athletic metaphor: spiritual discipline is training, not vibes. We want lives that match our message, not lives that undermine it. Finally, we go to Acts 9, where everything in Paul's life changes through a divine encounter with Jesus and we make the case that we need ongoing encounters too, not just a memory from years ago. If you want a deeper Christian walk, stronger discipleship habits, and a clearer gospel witness, press play, then subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review with the line that challenged you most. Thanks for listening! Mostly Film – Take 239: Harrison Ford In Review — Episode 1A new series begins. Jonathan and JP are spending six episodes inside the Harrison Ford filmography — not Star Wars, not Indiana Jones, but everything else. The films he made between the blockbusters, against the blockbusters, and long after the world had already decided who he was.Episode 1 starts with a question: who is Harrison Ford when he isn't playing a hero the whole world already loves?First up, Hanover Street — the 1979 WWII romance that Ford took because he'd never played a love scene before, hated making from start to finish, and has never seen. A film so thoroughly forgotten that it's not currently streaming anywhere. And yet there's a case to be made for it — Christopher Plummer quietly doing excellent work, a second half that generates real suspense, and Ford visibly more comfortable the moment someone points a gun at him than the moment someone kisses him. Which turns out to be genuinely revealing. Then Blade Runner. Fifty-plus consecutive nights of artificial rain. A crew so fed up they wore protest T-shirts. A director and star who feuded constantly over the voiceover, the Deckard question, and basically everything else. A film that flopped on release the same day as The Thing — both considered too cold and strange for audiences who just wanted to watch E.T. — and went on to become one of the most influential science fiction films ever made. Ford has called it not one of his favourites. The Final Cut suggests he was wrong. The big debates: is Deckard a replicant? Which version did you watch? And does Ford's performance hold up, or does Rutger Hauer walk away with the entire film in the last ten minutes?Up next: the Peter Weir years — Witness and The Mosquito Coast. Witness descriptions have been brought to the forefront of the trial of two former police officers, accused of perverting the course of justice. The judge presiding over the trial of Alan Hall for the 1985 murder of Arthur Easton said a witness's first description of a suspect should always be provided to the defence because it may be more accurate than later recollections. One of the officers continued giving evidence today and was asked why he failed to meet that basic legal principle. Matthew Theunissen reports.
Paul Skalnik was a cop turned con artist turned jailhouse informant. Over two decades, he provided testimony or information in more than 40 criminal cases, trading confessions he claimed to have overheard for reduced sentences and early release. Prosecutors in Florida's Pinellas County knew what he was. They used him anyway. Four of the men he testified against were sent to death row. At least one of them, Jim Dailey, is almost certainly innocent — and after more than 30 years, he's still there.Journalist Pam Colloff spent 20 years at Texas Monthly before joining ProPublica and the New York Times Magazine, where her investigation into Skalnik won the National Magazine Award and helped halt an execution. In this episode, Pam tells the story of a con man who married nine women, posed as an oilman, a lawyer, and an FBI agent — and discovered that his most profitable scam was the criminal justice system itself.Pam Colloff's new book is "Catch the Devil: A True Story of Murder, Deception, and Injustice on the Gulf Coast" https://www.amazon.com/dp/0593230868?lv=shuf&channelId=500&plpRedirect=mhFallbackSubscribe to our newsletter: https://jedlipinski.substack.com/ Connect with Jed Lipinski:https://www.instagram.com/gonesouthpodcast/https://www.facebook.com/groups/gonesouthpodcast/https://www.linkedin.com/in/jed-lipinski/

God is not just someone we worship on Sundays—He is someone we trust every day.
A frightening story and a cautionary tale for air travelers, after a 61-year-old man on a flight from Greece to Germany was partially sucked out of an airplane window. His wife and fellow passengers held onto his legs, and eventually pulled him back inside the plane. He is now recovering in the hospital with head and neck injuries and friction burns. Witness accounts from inside the cabin are harrowing and many believe the man is alive today because he was wearing his seatbelt when the window dislodged from the plane. This isn’t the first time an incident like this occurred, back in 2018, a woman was killed in eerily similar circumstances, on the same type of plane, a Boeing 737, headed from New York to Dallas.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
