New York born, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, guitarist /singer- songwriter Ricky Byrd (inducted in 2015 with Joan Jett and The Blackhearts), has had a career in music, spanning more than 40 years. He spent over a decade as a member of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts where he contributed music and background vocals to two platinum albums, I Love Rock 'n Roll and Up Your Alley, the gold certified Album, and four others for the band. Although best known for his time spent with The Blackhearts, Ricky has also recorded and played with Roger Daltrey, and toured with Ian Hunter and Southside Johnny. He has shared the stage with music royalty including Paul McCartney, Ringo, Alice Cooper, Bruce Springsteen, Steven Van Zandt, Joe Walsh, Mavis Staples, Dion, Brian Wilson, Smokey Robinson, Jimmy Page, Graham Nash, and Elvis Costello…to name just a few. While the lead guitarist is grateful for all his many musical achievements, Ricky often says one of his greatest gifts came about in 1987 when he started his journey in recovery. He's been clean and sober ever since, doing whatever he can to help others recover. It's his passion and what he's most proud of. Ricky began combining music with recovery in 2012, when he co-wrote a song with his friend, Richie Supa. The two wound up writing what is now considered a recovery classic “Broken Is A Place.” He wrote a second song, and then a third, and he didn't stop until the seeds of his 2017 Clean Getaway album were planted. Today, when he's not performing shows, he visits treatment facilities with his guitar and performs for residents. He also does a great deal of public speaking to help as many people suffering from drug and alcohol addiction as he can.  Ricky has a new single out now – "Louanne" his first in many years that is unrelated to recovery . Ricky says, “My last 2 records “Clean Getaway” and “Sobering Times” had lyrics that spoke to the issues of addiction and recovery. With this new batch of tunes that I'm releasing as singles, I was consciously staying away from that subject matter. 'Louanne' started with the riff and chords, as do most of the songs I write. Then I start to mumble words and fool with a melody. As I was going through the usual process I blurted out “Louanne.. if anybody could you can.” Then came the line“Why don't you go on and get yourself right .. Louanne.” I knew at that point where I was headed! So I guess you can say lyrically Louanne is a song of encouragement for someone struggling with something, and the music is being driven by a nasty RnR riff.” Ricky Byrd joins us this week as our special guest to share his amazing story.

Formed in 2018 and before their first album was even released, these crazy-talented musicians were asked to join the biggest tour of last summer ... Their music has been labeled “the future of rock n' roll;” and Derek Day (vocals), Chuck McKissock (drums), Dane Pieper (guitar), Griffin Tucker (guitar), and Franco Gravante (bass) have been dubbed “hard rock's new elite.”We got the chance yesterday to chat with Derek and Chuck where we found out what it was like for them to collaborate with Vince Neil (Mötley Crüe) and Justin Hawkins (The Darkness) on two of their singles, what it's like to play in huge stadiums, how the flame for music was ignited in them as kids, and how surprises feed their creativity when writing music. Classless Act is currently releasing five (5) acoustic versions of their Welcome To The Show singles, of which the final will be shared on December 16th. Tune in to our podcast to meet the band and get hyped for their show tomorrow in Asbury Park where they open for Giovannie & The Hired Guns! When you've spent almost all of your adult life in the music industry, and watching history being made, the stories you could tell are legion. Ed Stasium has that experience. He and Andy relive a good portion of the history of the music industry from the 1950s to today and how they both love and hate how it's all changed.    Ed's parents loved to listen to music but neither of them were musicians. They spared no expense in letting him explore his musical nature and dig into every facet of the process that he was moved by. Everything from providing him with guitar lessons to saving up and purchasing his very first tape recorder, they were willing to support him fully.    While he was in high school, he and some friends formed a garage band and that was his first step into the industry itself. He learned how to produce, mix, and engineer on the job and by working with some of the biggest names in music. He is now working on creating an anniversary box set for The Ramones, a band that he has been closely linked to for their entire career.    Listen as Ed shares stories about working with various production companies and bands, and why rock and roll has always had his heart. He has a refreshing way of discussing his role in creating some of the most iconic music through the decades and his humility whilst discussing his genius is fascinating to hear.    Show Highlights:   [00:00:10] Ed Stasium is an American record producer and engineer who has seen rock ‘n roll grow up.  [00:01:18] Ed shares how he met and began working with Mastering Engineer, Greg Calbi, who was also interviewed by Andy on The Music Makers. [00:01:58] Learn more about his work on The Ramones 40 year anniversary box set.  [00:05:47] When did his passion for music begin?  [00:09:13] His first experience with a tape recorder.  [00:12:06] How his garage band started and then his transition into engineering. [00:18:14] His first foray in building a studio.  [00:22:50] Learn what it takes to align tape machines. [00:25:40] How he learned his craft.  [00:28:57] Ed recounts working with several French Canadian artists.  [00:32:08] He even worked with the Bee Gees. Learn more.  [00:34:09] How he became an audio consultant and engineer for Media Sound's new studio and later, The Power Station.  [00:38:52] What was the impetus for him finally becoming a part of the Media family?  [00:39:49] Learn more about his time with The Ramones.  [00:42:48] Did he know the Talking Heads before working with them?  [00:44:34] What was it like working with Mick Jagger?  [00:50:17] Ed shares what it was like working on the first Living Colour album. [00:55:33] What was it like working with Soul Asylum and The Smithereens?  [00:59:03] Hear more about his time working with Joan Jett & The Blackhearts. [01:00:46] Why he took a step away from the industry and moved to Durango, CO. [01:04:12] Does he miss the days of bands recording together?  [01:06:47] What about digital technology does he like?  [01:09:45] Learn how he's adapted to the times and working remotely.    LINKS & RESOURCES   Ed Stasium: https://edstasium.com  Mentioned:  Episode 13 Greg Calbi: Iconic Mastering Engineer Follow The Music Makers:  The Music Makers on Instagram   The Music Makers podcast theme song was written and produced by Andy Kushner with help from the rhythm section and horn players of the band, SoundConnection: Elliot Jefferson, Lamonte Silver, Keith Hammond, Roy Lambert, Joe Herrera, and Craig Alston.   Sponsor: Kushner Entertainment    Check out Andy's Other Podcast: The Wedding Biz

He claimed an undue tax burden, excessive government regulation, and massive social spending programs hampered growth.   51.    Reagan's 1981 Program for Economic Recovery had four major policy objectives: (1) reduce the growth of government spending, (2) reduce the marginal tax rates on income from both labor and capital, (3) reduce regulation, and (4) reduce inflation by controlling the growth of the money supply. The economic theory behind the plan was called Supply-Side, or Trickle-Down economics, or voodoo economics by political opponents.   52.    Did It Work?   53.    President Reagan delivered on each of his four major policy objectives., although not to the extent that he and his supporters had hoped.   54.    Government spending wasn't lowered, just shifted from domestic programs to defense. The result? The federal debt almost tripled, from $997 billion in 1981 to $2.857 trillion in 1989.   55.    Reagan cut tax rates enough to stimulate consumer demand. By Reagan's last year in office, the top income tax rate was 28 percent for single people making $18,550 or more. Anyone making less paid no taxes at all. That was much less than the 1980 top tax rate of 70 percent for individuals earning $108,000 or more. Reagan offset these tax cuts with tax increases elsewhere. He raised Social Security payroll taxes and some excise taxes. Reagan cut the corporate tax rate from 46 percent to 40 percent.   56.    Reagan deregulated: Domestic oil and gas, cable TV, long-distance telephone service, interstate bus service, and ocean shipping. He eased bank regulations, but that helped create the Savings and Loan Crisis in 1989. Reagan increased, not decreased, import barriers. He did little to reduce other regulations affecting health, safety, and the environment. Carter had reduced regulations at a faster pace.   57.    Tame Inflation. Reagan was fortunate Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker was already in place. Volcker vigorously attacked the double-digit inflation of the 1970s.   58.    Legacy   59.    Reagan’s indifference to urban problems was legendary. For example, early in his presidency, at a White House reception, Reagan greeted the only black member of his Cabinet, Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Samuel Pierce, saying: “How are you, Mr. Mayor? I’m glad to meet you. How are things in your city?” He had failed to recognize his own HUD Secretary.   60.    And his dislike for public school education is still with us.   61.    MAY 06, 2013 LANCE T. IZUMI: SACRAMENTO, CA – While Ronald Reagan’s foreign policy changed the face of the world, it shouldn’t be forgotten that his leadership also dramatically changed the face of issues at home. Top among those was education. In 1983, the Reagan administration released the groundbreaking report A Nation at Risk.  Using a wealth of statistical data, the report demonstrated in detail the failings of America’s education system and the impact of those failings on the country’s children. The report recommended greater emphasis on basic subjects such as math and English, more rigorous and measurable standards, higher expectations for student performance and conduct, lengthening the school year, and improving teacher quality through, for example, increasing standards for teacher training programs. It’s no coincidence that the report’s recommendations form the basis for much of today’s agenda for education reform.   62.    According to Dick Carpenter, professor of education leadership at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, in the two years after the release of “A Nation at Risk”,  Reagan delivered more than 50 education-related speeches. Prof. Carpenter found, In speech after speech, Reagan articulated his educational beliefs and ideas, including parental responsibility in education; school choice, including tax credits and vouchers; rigorous academic content focused on basics such as reading, writing, arithmetic, history, and government; religious freedom in schools; high standards of conduct and discipline; character education; and a federal responsibility in helping the disadvantaged.    63.    Gary K. Clabaugh The Cutting Edge 259: Most presupposed that the charges made by Mr. Reagan’s handpicked panel were true. Oddly, throughout this entire clamor parents’ confidence in the schools their children attended remained remarkably high.9Meanwhile Mr. Reagan was quietly halving federal aid to education.   64.    That sums up Mr. Reagan’s educational legacy. As governor and president he demagogically fanned discontent with public education, then made political hay of it. As governor and president he bashed educators and slashed education spending while professing to value it.
