This week, we discuss two films from American Indie director Hal Hartley. The first is The Unbelievable Truth (1989), starring Adrienne Shelly and Robert Burke. It tells the story of Audry, a girl who dumps her high-school boyfriend and becomes a successful fashion model, and her relationship with a mysterious man called Josh, recently released from prison after serving time for manslaughter. The second is Trust (1990), starring Adrienne Shelly and Martin Donovan. Two young misfits, both in emotional shock, meet in a Long Island town and through trials develop a platonic relationship based on mutual admiration, respect and trust. The Apprentice is a 2024 biographical drama film that examines Donald Trump's career as a real estate businessman in New York in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as his relationship with lawyer Roy Cohn. Directed by Ali Abbasi and written by Gabriel Sherman, the film stars Sebastian Stan as Trump, Jeremy Strong as Cohn, Martin Donovan as Trump's father Fred, and Maria Bakalova as Trump's first wife, Ivana. An international co-production between Canada, Denmark, Ireland, and the United States, the film was announced in May 2018, but languished for several years until Abbasi, Stan, and Strong joined in fall 2023. After premiering at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 20, 2024, the film struggled to find American distribution due to its subject matter and an attempt by Trump's legal team to block its release. Briarcliff Entertainment eventually bought the rights, and theatrically released it on October 11, 2024. The film received generally positive reviews from critics.
For this week's second podcast review, I am joined by Josh Parham & Giovanni Lago to review and discuss the latest film from Ali Abbasi, "The Apprentice," starring Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Strong, Maria Baklava & Martin Donovan. After having its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, Abbasi's "Rise of Donald Trump" biopic drama sat without distribution, got stuck in legality issues, and came under heavy scrutiny from supporters (and yes, even opposers) of Donald Trump, leaving us to wonder if the film would ever be released. Well, now, it's finally playing in theaters from Briarcliff Entertainment, and we are here to give you our SPOILER-FILLED thoughts on the performances, writing, direction, awards season chances, and implications the film may or may not have on the election and how the outcome of the election may influence whether audiences even watch the film. This week it gets lonely at night, as we live in a twilight world and there are no friends at dusk. We welcome Matt Pollock (Matty's Movie Burner) back to the program on the final Friday of the month to induct a new entry into the podcast canon: 2020's Tenet, written and directed by Christopher Nolan, and starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Kenneth Branagh, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Himesh Patel, Clémence Poésy, Michael Caine, Martin Donovan, Dimple Kapadia, and former NHL super-pest Sean Avery. One of the few major theatrical releases of the COVID era, it was only just re-released to theaters to capitalize on Oppenheimer's Oscar momentum. But it's a polarizing movie to be sure. While the three of us love it a great deal, it is not a popular sentiment. We do our best to analyze why people put this undeniable gorgeous and visually inventive movie in the crosshairs, and if a critical re-appraisal is due. Plus it's not all Tenet talk, as Matty and J Mo combines for Theatrical Field Reports on Late Night with the Devil, Snack Shack and Love Lies Bleeding. Be forewarned: this is our longest episode ever, and you may want to watch the film before listening along. Unfortunately, at the time of publication, Tenet is currently unavailable for streaming in Canada, though, you know, you could check it out of the library if you're keen. Other works referenced in this episode include Wonka, Paddington, Paddington 2, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Licorice Pizza, Sex Drive, American Pie, Thirteen, Trainspotting, Kids, Heat, Superbad, Pineapple Express, The To-Do List, The Way Way Back, The Dark Knight, Early Edition, Prisoners, Dune: Part 1, S1m0ne, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part 1, The Holdovers, The Iron Claw, Dune: Part 2, The Fabelmans, Dazed and Confused, California Split, A History of Violence, Gone Baby Gone, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Garbage Pail Kids Movie, Footloose, X-Men '97, Spider-Man: The Animated Series, Madame Web, Dune (1984), Arrival, Hot Rod, The Departed, The Invisible Man, In Bruges, Widows, Inception, 12 Monkeys, The Terminator, Looper, Dunkirk, Munich, Belfast, Love Actually..., A Haunting in Venice, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Interstellar, Good Time, High Life, The Lost City of Z, The Boy and the Heron, the Twilight saga, May-December, Station Eleven, Weeds, Insomnia, The Art of Racing in the Rain, Malcolm X, The Dark Knight Rises, Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade, E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jurassic Park, and Good Will Hunting among others. We'll be back next week to kick off April as we check back in with our old pal Tom Cruise and follow him over to Japan for 2003's The Last Samurai, a movie which is presently unavailable to stream in Canada but can be rented on Amazon and YouTube. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Time to talk about a movie that really clicks. BlackBerry is a Canadian biographical dramedy that covers the history of the titular phone developed by Research in Motion (RIM) from its meteoric rise starting in the late 90s to its inevitable downfall in the late 2000s. The movie stars Jay Baruchel and Glenn Howerton as the polar opposite co-CEOs, with Matt Johnson as one of the co-founders and true heart of the film. Plus, Johnson also directed BlackBerry and co-wrote the screenplay with Matthew Miller. BlackBerry was adapted from Jacquie McNish and Sean Silcoff's book Losing the Signal: The Untold Story Behind the Extraordinary Rise and Spectacular Fall of BlackBerry. And the rest of the cast includes Rich Sommer, Michael Ironside, Martin Donovan, Michelle Giroux, SungWon Cho, Saul Rubinek, and Cary Elwes. 2004's SAVED!, directed by Brian Donnelly (who also co-wrote the film) follows a teenaged girl played by Jena Malone who attends a Christian high school and, as part of an attempt to “cure” her boyfriend of his homosexuality, winds up pregnant and facing the ostracization of her classmates, most notably the self-righteous Hillary Fae, played by Mandy Moore. The film also stars Patrick Fugit, Martin Donovan, Eva Amuri, Macaulay Culkin and the always effervescent Mary Louise Parker. Kevin and Mike tackle the film's portrayal of religion, the way some people distort Christian messages to suit their own prejudices, the cast, the movie's status as a time capsule of mid-2000s culture, and the skateboarding antics of Patrick Fugit's rebellious Christian missionary. Hallelujah, it's a new Gleaming the Tube!

IT'S WRANGLERS VS. DINOSAURS, BUCKAROOS VS. WEREWOLVES, AND DISGRACED SOLDIERS VS. WESTWARD EXPANDING CANNIBALS! Howdy, cowpoke, did you just hear a spooky coyote howl? Catch a glimpse of a ghostly cow, maybe? That's probably because Gabe and returning guest Luana Saitta are talking about westerns with a horror slant this month. Well, that was the idea, at least. We ended up covering classic dino “Weird Western,” The Valley of Gwangi (directed by Jim O'Connolly, 1969), an arty frontier bodice ripper with a werewolf twist in Martin Donovan's Mad at the Moon (1992), one gen-u-ine western horror classic – Antonia Bird's Ravenous (1999). Have you guys seen Ravenous? Because it's really good. Note: I didn't notice that Luana's mic was a bit hot and that mine was echoing until I was in the process of editing. I tried to fix both issues to the best of my abilities. Based on the found footage horror podcast of the same name, Netflix dropped the first season of Archive 81 starring Mamoudou Athie, Dina Shihabi, Matt McGorry, and Martin Donovan on Friday. The show has elements of Ex Machina, Clickbait, and Lost. Tune in as we discuss our expectations for the series and thoughts on the first episode, "Mystery Signals." The irony is not lost on us. We are a podcast talking about a show that was adapted from another podcast, which is about a fake podcast about a guy who went missing.

#SilentHillfilm #SilentHillRevelation #Podcast Silent Hill is a 2006 psychological horror film directed by Christophe Gans and written by Roger Avary, Gans, and Nicolas Boukhrief. The film is an adaptation of Konami's 1999 video game Silent Hill. It stars Radha Mitchell, Sean Bean, Laurie Holden, Deborah Kara Unger, Kim Coates, Tanya Allen, Alice Krige, and Jodelle Ferland. The film follows Rose, who takes her adopted daughter, Sharon, to the town of Silent Hill, for which Sharon cries while sleepwalking. Arriving at Silent Hill, Rose is involved in a car accident and awakens to find Sharon missing. While searching for her daughter, she fights a local cult and begins to uncover Sharon's connection to the town's dark past. Development of Silent Hill began in the early 2000s. After attempting to gain the film rights to Silent Hill for five years, Gans sent a video interview to Konami explaining his plans for adapting Silent Hill and how important the games are to him. Konami awarded him the film rights as a result. Gans and Avary began working on the script in 2004. Avary used Centralia, Pennsylvania as an inspiration for the town. Principal photography began in April 2005 and lasted three months with an estimated $50 million budget, and was shot on sound sets and on location in Ontario, Canada. The concept of the film is based on the idea of a city that exists in four different variations, presented in metaphysical, mystical and temporal aspects. Most of the monsters encountered in the film were played by professional dancers, only a few of them were created on the basis of computer graphics. Silent Hill was released in Canada on April 21, 2006, by Alliance Atlantis and in France on April 26, 2006, by Metropolitan Filmexport. The film theatrically grossed over $100 million worldwide, and over $22 million from DVD sales. It received generally negative reviews from critics, and Rotten Tomatoes summarized the response as "visually impressive, but as with many video game adaptations, it's plagued by inane dialogue, a muddled plot, and an overlong runtime". It earned four Fangoria Chainsaw Award nominations. A sequel, Silent Hill: Revelation, was released on October 26, 2012. Silent Hill: Revelation (also known as Silent Hill: Revelation 3D) is a 2012 psychological horror film written and directed by M. J. Bassett. A sequel to the 2006 film Silent Hill, it stars Adelaide Clemens, Kit Harington, Martin Donovan, Malcolm McDowell and Carrie-Anne Moss, along with Sean Bean, Deborah Kara Unger and Radha Mitchell returning from the previous film. It is based on the survival horror video game Silent Hill 3 by Konami.[6] Revelation's plot follows adult Heather Mason (Clemens) who, discovering on the eve of her eighteenth birthday that her presumed identity is false, is drawn to an alternate dimension existing in the fictitious American town of Silent Hill. Talks for a Silent Hill sequel began in December 2006, with Christophe Gans returning to direct and Roger Avary writing a script for the project. However, after Gans dropped out from directing and Avary was imprisoned for vehicular manslaughter, the project entered in a complicated production. Later, in early 2010, Bassett was hired to direct and write the film, replacing Gans and Avary. She had expressed her openness to fans' suggestions of actresses for Heather's role. On a total estimated $20 million budget, filming lasted from March to May 2011 in Canada, with the 3D RED Epic camera used for the process; audio mixing took place in France. Silent Hill: Revelation was released in Canada on 26 October 2012 by Alliance Films and in France on 28 November 2012 by Metropolitan Filmexport. The film grossed over $56 million worldwide and was received negative reviews from critics.[5][7] --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/doseofnerdacumen/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/doseofnerdacumen/support

In the past weeks we've spoken with Martin Donovan, Edie Falco & Karen Sillas. On this ep we bring together actors Bill Sage and Robert Burke for a "Simple Men" reunion, plus director Hal Hartley. The guys reflect back on their SUNY Purchase days as well as their subsequent years on the Hal Hartley set. The Long Island Trilogy box set is now available for purchase.
The first of 4 segments dedicated to Hal Hartley's Long Island Trilogy; this one with the actor Martin Donovan who has appeared in a bunch of Hartley's films, including two from that trilogy: "Trust" and "Simple Men". Donovan has directed the feature film "Collaborator" starring David Morse and continues to be one of the busiest film and television actors working today.
Members of the original Purchase Mafia join me in this mash-up to share memories of making the three films that comprise Hal Hartley's Long Island Trilogy. Participants include Edie Falco, Martin Donovan, Robert Burke, Bill Sage and Karen Sillas. Hal also joins in. A new box set of the trilogy will be available as of Friday, November 23rd.
“There are no more Jack Nicholson's. There are no more Marlon Brando's.” - Jessejames Locorriere⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ On this week's episode, we have a conversation with Jessejames Locorriere. Jessejames is an actor and proud father, and we painted outside the lines a bit in this episode and chat about music, the mentorship of William H. Macy, the odd genius of Joaquin Phoenix, and we ponder the idea of Marlon Brando being a meme. Jessejames acting career began nearly to 40 years ago when he started his studies at the Lee Strasberg Acting Institute in Manhattan at the age of eight. Years later, he went on to study with the Atlantic Theater Companies' Practical Aesthetics Workshop at New York University. With over 50 film/television credits, Jessejames is best known for his work in Ant-Man (Marvel), Banshee (Cinemax), MacGyver (CBS), Sleepy Hollow (FOX), Still The King (CMT), and Turn: Washington's Spies (AMC). Currently, you can watch Jessejames as “Henry” in the second season of Ozark (Netflix). In the coming months, you'll be able to catch him in the first episode of Dolly Parton Theater (Netflix), The Dead Center, a feature film recently acquired by Arrow Films, and soon he will be making an extraordinary appearance in The Escape Game's interactive gaming experience, nationally. Jessejames resides in Nashville, TN, where he teaches acting workshops and coaches actors for film/television. You can learn more about Jessejames and his work at bonsai.film/filmmaker-spotlight New episodes are published every Tuesday. Listen+Subscribe+Rate = Love Enjoy! Questions or Comments? I had the immense pleasure of getting to talk to actor/writer/director Martin Donovan for this bonus episode. I've long admired his work going all the way back to when I first saw Hal Hartley's TRUST back in 1994 and he's worked with some incredible filmmakers over the years. Martin is now behind the camera, to tell a taut, suspenseful story about conflicting ideologies clashing with his recent directorial debut, COLLABORATOR. The interview starts right after a 10-minute introduction in which I briefly talk about the passing of a legendary Chicago film critic as well as the upcoming Chicago Film Critics Festival which was put together by previous guests of the show. Thanks so much for listening and thanks again to Martin for his time. - Jimhttp://directorsclubpodcast.comhttp://chicagocriticsfilmfestival.com/about/
Martin Donovan stars in his writing/directing debut, 'Collaborator', alongside David Morse, Olivia Williams, and Katherine Helmond.
