On today's episode the History Guy tells two stories of bugs and destruction. First he talks about the great Wine Blight, where pests nearly wiped out the French wine industry. Then he talks about the Rocky Mountain Locust and the plague of 1874.
With both guys back in the studio together and October being a bit of a crazy month - this week on THAT WOULD BE RAD, we play "catch up". We didn't really get a chance to put a ribbon on Halloween or talk about the scary movies we loved (and hated) that we watched, how much candy our kids dumped out when they got home from trick or treating, and so...we do so here. We dive into movies like the recently released "Cobweb", "No One Will Save You", and the results of Woody deciding to show his pre-teen son the John Carpenter classic "The Fog". Did his son have a sleepless night, or is he now a fellow John Carpenter enthusiast? You'll have to listen to find out! Listen as the conversation between 2 best friends leads you to Led Zeppelin and the hidden gems in album covers, the mysteries of biology (like the shape of Wombat...well...you'll find out), and the Frisson phenomenon. This is an episode that will make you laugh, think, and wonder. Don't miss it! Don't forget to like, share, and leave a review! Your feedback fuels our passion for uncovering the extraordinary. #202. We bet a handful of you are listening to this episode via Apple CarPlay right now. Better this than Ed Sheeran for the millionth time. There's nothing like the trauma of smashing buttons on your car stereo to stop the madness to turn you on to cycling. You may, however, have to talk to a stranger at a bike shop who knows more than you. You'll overthink it and feel intimidated no matter how nice they are. It's almost as intimidating as the first day on the job as a restaurant server. Either way, you may just need to take the tips as you get them. In streaming, Kory watched Air and learned the history of Nike pursuing Michael Jordan. Kendall watched John Mulaney: Baby J and learned some sneaky lighting tricks. We missed Dillon, and amidst the neurotic thought processing, you will, too. Speaking of whom, sometimes you need to quickly get in and out of Kroger like a rainstorm is coming for your own retribution. Trying to make sense of that? Check out the episode! Vainglory Hole: This room is bisected. On one side is a washroom with three magic mirrors promising a better you. Mirror 1 (Charm Hole): Shows you with great charisma, beautiful, a leader. Mirror 2 (3rd Eye Hole): Shows you with a 3rd eye in your forehead and with infinite cosmic power. Mirror 3 (Power Hole): Shows you with massive muscles and dexterous ability. None of the mirrors do what they promise. There's a stand that's holding instructional pamphlets on how to use the magic mirrors and their benefits. A lock box labeled “tips” is there for you to leave some money, but it's trapped with a slime shotgun if you attempt to steal the money. A wash basin filled with stinging salty water has a sign that reads, “Rinse after using the mirrors.”Unbeknownst to the PCs, on the other side of the wall is a gremlin beauty salon. When you push your face through the mirror, it sticks to the magic material, tears off your face, then drops your slimy face into a face-goo container that the gremlins use as a beauty product. The gremlins simply continue cutting hair and gossiping about the dungeon.Art: Tiger Wizard Words: Steve AlbertsonStory by: Andrew Bellury, Steve Albertson, Thorin Thompson--Our guest this week is Thorin Thompson of Owl Knight Publishing & Goodman Games. In 1909, the Mayor of Tokyo sent a gift of 2,000 prized cherry trees to Washington, D.C. But the iconic blossoms enjoyed each spring along the Tidal Basin are not from those trees. That's because Flora Patterson, who was the Mycologist in Charge at the USDA, recognized the original saplings were infected, and the shipment was burned on the National Mall. In this episode, assistant producer Hilda Gitchell explores Flora's lasting impact on the field of mycology, starting with a blight that killed off the American chestnut trees, and how she helped make the USDA's National Fungus Collection the largest in the world.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Map of Biosecurity Interventions, published by James Lin on October 30, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Summary I recently created a visual map of biosecurity. It covers my interpretation of foundational biosecurity interventions. The map is designed to broadly answer “what are people working on in biosecurity?” (Link to a larger, higher resolution image) ‘Low-downside Interventions' are interventions that are on the lower-risk side. These might be good discussion topics or companies to work on. Promising GCBR Interventions are interventions with general consensus among biosecurity experts for being effective at preventing catastrophic pandemics. Not all interventions are made equal. Some are much more effective than others, but I've included the ‘less-promising' interventions all the same. I didn't want my biases (or the biosecurity community's biases, for that matter) about what is and isn't promising to obscure solutions from a first-principles breakdown. Though I consulted experts and peers, all final decisions were ultimately mine and may differ from the biosecurity community. The rest of the post will go over my rationale for certain decisions. GCBR vs. Covid-scale pandemics This map covers preventing pandemics, not just the catastrophic ones, but also the Covid-scale ones which might occur more frequently. EA focuses a lot on global catastrophic biological risk (GCBR) pandemics. This seems pretty important given its neglectedness and potentially catastrophic impact. I've outlined the interventions that I think would be promising for GCBRs. At the same time, many in biosecurity consider the effects of AI to outweigh those from biorisks (the magnitude is usually 10-100x). Progress in alignment is influenced by factors like international cooperation, institutional distrust, and nuclear conflict. All of these factors are affected by Covid-scale pandemics, whether through decreases in trust, sudden scarcity of resources, or armed international conflict. Considering the possible detrimental effect of even small-scale but more frequent pandemics, it seems worth exploring interventions focused on this scale. There may be more low-hanging fruit than we imagine. Mitigate-Prevent breakdown There are other excellent frameworks for pandemic prevention. Kevin Esvelt's Delay-Detect-Defend is one such example. I decided on a two-factor framework of Mitigate-Prevent because I think it covers the space of interventions well and because it resulted in a nice visual. Part of this framework is Survive which involves bunkers and food resilience. I didn't include it because I wanted more emphasis on preventing diseases from becoming pandemics in the first place, which is much more important than escaping to a bunker. If we're escaping to bunkers, then it's likely that we've lost. That said, I could imagine creating another map that covers this axis of resilience. Thoughts on some specific interventions Agricultural disease monitoring and farm-animal testing Factory farms practically incubate viruses due to the high concentration of animals. Because diseases can pass from animals to humans, more vigilance here could be an effective preventative measure. Wet markets experienced pushback for being viral breeding grounds, and it's about time that factory farms undergo the same scrutiny. In addition to worrying about human and animal infection, crops are also vulnerable. Agricultural practices are monoculture in nature, meaning there is a lack of genetic diversity in the crops grown. Blights exist, and countries are surprisingly dependent on a few sources of food. Monitoring agricultural diseases through runoff water or random sampling seems worth consideration. Bioenhancement By bioenhancement, I mean health and performance-boosting drugs. Most people have a negative connotation w...

In this episode, Jeanne and Kathleen review D200's reasonable back-to-school Covid Mitigation policy and the unreasonable reaction to it. In the wake of Illinois Democrats' phony Ethics Reform, the state has lost another Legislative Inspection General (it's as if they planned it...). State Rep. And Texas House Democrats hop a flight to DC in a junket that highlights the over-the-top, hyperbolic rhetoric we have come to expect from modern-day Democrats.

“There isn't any more! What do you want me to do, slit my wrists? Wait, you're a plant. I'm a vampire. Why am I feeding you blood? Shouldn't it be the other way around?“ -Vampire Rick Moranis in the new gritty reboot of Little Shop of Horrors. I don't want to ruin the whole origin story here, but I will say this: Blights have the silliest origin and I am so totally on board with it. The plants come from vampires. How? What? Why? Plants don't drink blood! Blights are sentient diseased plants that want to take over the world, they're basically if Groot played Audrey II in Little Shop of Horrors. That's a fun movie! So Blights are probably friends, right? Oh, but Vampires are bad. So maybe Blights are fiends. Join Kyle and Alex as they try to figure that out on this week's episode!

"There isn't any more! What do you want me to do, slit my wrists? Wait, you're a plant. I'm a vampire. Why am I feeding you blood? Shouldn't it be the other way around?" -Vampire Rick Moranis in the new gritty reboot of Little Shop of Horrors. Other things Don’t miss out on all the action of our main podcast. You can find all the adventure episodes of We Have Darkvision here. We’ve also started to upload our back catalogue of episodes and theme music over on youtube as well. Chaos ensues as the hoard of Blights attacks but that's just the beginning for our heroes as they pursue an old evil deeper underground. What awaits in the bloody grove? Only time will tell...

We talk about the very scary, but very slow flesh jelly monster, the Gibbering Mouther! This guy is pretty easy to kite and kill, but the permanent death it threatens and it's nasty bite makes it very deadly when things go wrong. Blights are up next, the plant monsters that come from vampire trees! There are a few types, and they're actually pretty good to use! Tristan has a type of warrior that keeps coming back like a Lich, and Dylan has elementals in swords and a crazy music box fae spirit.

Original Air Date: June 2, 2018 Garden Fortress: Beasts, Bugs, Blights, Oh My! Weeds, Hot Days, Cold Nights, Wind, Hail, Yikes! There are so many elements that can in some way spoil your hard work in the garden. There are beasts, bugs, blights, viruses, bacteria, weeds, soil imbalances and fertilizer needs. You need a sort of garden fortress to protect your plants. Beasts The voracious appetite of a ground hog can level a new crop of green beans in the blink of an eye. Chipmunks will steal you almost ripe strawberries just before you get there, bowl in hand and mouth watering for a treat. Mice, moles, as well as chipmunks can eat the bottom half of you root veggies. I have had almost a whole 4’x4’x bed eaten from below. Birds are more of a problem with berries than with veggies. I've watched birds fly off with a blueberry in his beak and back in minutes to steal another one. I remember vividly the first time I saw that the ripe strawberries in the garden where gone to a chipmunk, “I can share, how much can they really eat?” I thought. Well they will eat them all, so I found out. And come back for more! The birds will steal a few blackberries but the chipmunks don’t seem to like the thorns, so they leave them alone. I have had chipmunks scale a dwarf apple tree and take a bit of not one be several ripe apples. At least he could just eat a whole one instead of nibbling on a few apples. Sheeesh! And once a chipmunk scaled a trellis to eat Sugar Snap Peas. Not Just The Small Animals Either As if the little creatures were not enough of a bother, the last two years a bear has been knocking over out compost bins. This last fall the bear destroyed three bins completely, we had to recycle them. They cost about $100 each so it was an expensive attack. The deer generally leave us alone until fall when they like to level out Brussel Sprouts. One year it was the night before our thanksgiving dinner. I went out to pick them fresh for our feast to find almost all of the stalks stripped. The deer will also level the Swiss Chard and the Collards overnight if there is any left. Bugs That’s just the beasts. The bugs are a whole ‘nother story! The infamous Cabbage Worm and now the Midge attack the Cole crops along with the Cabbage Root Maggot. Young plants are regularly attacked by cutworms, slugs, flea beetles and root maggots. If you have ever watched a Horned Tomato Worm feasting on your plants, you will agree that they are truly monstrous! They must be the inspiration for horror movies. I had one infestation of aphids the literally ate a bed of Chinese Cabbage I had in a hoop house. I check in one weekend, everything was fine, the next weekend the plants were brown and dried out. Yipes! The weird thing is that I never saw them coming and by the time I noticed the damage they were moving to the next thing. I will admit that I never have had a plague of locust! I have had leaf miners attack my spinach, but the plant usually outgrows the problem. Colorado Potato Beetle lay bright orange eggs under leaves of potatoes and eggplants. It took us three years to get the Asparagus Beetle under control in our patch. Japanese beetles really eat hardy on my green beans and my Blueberries. I manage squash vine borer by growing most of my cucurbits on trellis’ that seems to avoid the problem. Blights, Wilts, Fungi, Viruses, Bacteria, Mildews. Oh My! In our region Late Blight is the most destructive of all of these, wiping out a whole crop of tomatoes or potatoes overnight. Farmers and Gardeners alike can see their hard work vanish with no hope of recovery. The most popular garden vegetable, the tomato, is affected by lots of wilts and diseases. Fortunately Hybrids and NEW breeds have been developed to resist many of those diseases. Already there are a handful of varieties are being goffered that are Late blight resistance. Early blight is not as destructive and its cousin it still can cause troub...

The theme of today's episode is true facts. We claim many things are; with varying degrees of sincerity. If you want to learn about Egyptian pet mourning, tango's effect on the lumbar region, or the Wiggles, this is the episode for you. Also, blights are a lot easier to defeat when you're level 3. Just saying.
In this episode we’ll explore humanity’s, and the entire animal kingdom’s, fraught relationship with its closest biological cousins, fungi. We will hear about how we can’t live without them, how they’re trying to wipe us off the face of the planet, and how at least one company thinks they’re the key to changing how we view our own mortality. This one of our largest single episodes, comprised of four parts! First, Dr. Dennis Desjardin of San Francisco State University will tell us about his lifelong relationship with fungi and some of the bizarre organisms he has discovered. Next, we’ll talk to Dr. Margo Daub of North Carolina State University about a deadly pathogen that threatens our food security. Third, we will hear from Dr. Anita Sil of UCSF about a deadly fungus that uses our own immune system against us, and finally, Claire McNamara from the startup Coeio will explain how their product can leverage the power of fungi to create a radical shift in our view on death.
