Sub to the PPM Patreon to access the entire 3 hour runtime of CULT OF CAGE PT. II: patreon.com/ParaPowerMapping (Full notes viewable via the link) An impromptu Halloween session w/ Orion St. Peter gave birth to this Nicolas Cage dbl feature—in which we discuss occult, cultic, & PTK themes in the loosely defined horror films "Longlegs" & "Mandy", tentpoles of the late Cage capitalism debt-induced “renaissance”. We dig deep into the interplay between the "Longlegs" narrative and director Oz Perkins's personal esoteric & intergenerational familial trauma history, sussing out the sources of inspiration in his own highly strange, quasi-aristocratic pedigree. For ex, his great-grandpa "Count" Wilhelm de Wendt de Kerlor, a psychic detective cum spy in the mold of PPM usual suspects Aleister Crowley or Erik Jan Hanussen who was a member of the Theosophical Society, an avid spiritualist, and supposedly the medium who prophesied tabloid journo & anti sex trafficking crusader W.T. Stead's death on the Titanic... We discuss his Italian great-gma, world-conquering designer (aka Chanel's rival) Elsa Schiaparelli & her affiliations with Dadaists & Surrealists like Dalí and Man Ray, not to mention the fact the de Gaulle government suspected her of collaborating with the 3rd Reich. We unpack how psychic detective de Kerlor appeared on the scene in New Hampshire to "investigate" a murder that two BOI agents linked to German espionage in the Northeast during WWI, and we discuss how de Kerlor & Schiaparelli would be surveilled & interviewed, Wilhelm seemingly under suspicion of serving as a foreign agent. These fascinating, little known histories re Oz Perkins's ancestors are an obvious touchpoint for the clairvoyant FBI agent Lee Harker in the glam Satanic serial-killing-by-sympathetic-magick-or-mind-control flick "Longlegs". We also talk about how it's conceivably 9/11 as Mass Ritual pilled, seeing as Oz's mom Berry Berenson died on Flight 11 on 9/11, which gives one a headrushing vertiginous feeling indeed... Seeing as she's descended from this Theosophist spy. Her BDay is repeatedly woven into the sigilistic & algorithmic subtext of the film. And we also discuss how, on the patrilineal side of Oz's family, his Dad Anthony Perkins's confessed childhood Oedipal complex, the early wished-for death of his father, his lifelong closeted life, and his ultimate succumbing to AIDs... How all of this informed the emotionally-charged, cathartic film & its unspoken traumatic seeds... As we go, our analysis of the film begins to force us to confront a theory where a kind of unstated CSA blackhole is the source of the the Longlegs mystery's gravitational pull. We talk: Mandy dir. Cosmatos's father George Pan Cosmatos's final film “The Shadow Conspiracy” which concerns a pres assassination by drone; both Panos & his Dad having Pan in their names; the Mansonian failed songwriter vibes of both villains Jeremiah Sands & Longlegs; the Mandy scene where a planned ritualized orgy lubricated with “the chemist's best batch” & hallucinogenic wasp injections derails when Mandy openly clowns on the cult leader; Longlegs's character obvs nodding at glam Satanism, Marc Bolan, & David Bowie's infamous “Station to Station”, Dion Fortune-informed exorcism of his possessed indoor pool in what was once stripper & burlesque dancer Gypsy Rose Lee's LA manse; Longlegs's cinematic influences - Fincher fare like Se7en, Zodiac, etc; Silence of the Lambs; Don't Look Now; Altman; Twin Peaks; The Omen; New French Extreme; Gaspar Noe; & Phantasm Many thanks to Orion for jumping on for this spooky dbl feature at such short notice. Tombstone (1993) is a Western classic that delivers unforgettable performances and thrilling action while diving deep into themes of loyalty, justice, and brotherhood. Kurt Russell commands the screen as Wyatt Earp, but it's Val Kilmer's portrayal of Doc Holliday that truly steals the show, blending wit, charm, and tragedy in one of the most iconic roles in cinema history. With its intense gunfights, memorable dialogue, and beautifully captured landscapes, Tombstone is more than just a genre film—it's a riveting, emotional journey that stands the test of time.
Leviathan is a mixed bag. It has moments of tension and some striking visuals, but ultimately, it lacks the originality or depth to elevate it to the level of classic sci-fi horror. It's worth a watch for fans of the genre, especially those who enjoy creature features but don't expect it to offer much beyond a familiar—if entertaining—ride through well-worn territory.
“Cobra” is a film that delivers on its promise of intense action and a tough protagonist. Sylvester Stallone's performance and the film's gritty atmosphere are definite highlights. However, the thin plot, lack of character development, and relentless violence may detract from the overall experience for some viewers. It's a movie that action aficionados might enjoy for its raw energy and iconic moments, but it falls short of being a well-rounded cinematic experience.
“Rambo: First Blood Part II” is a must-watch for fans of action films and 80s cinema. It solidifies John Rambo as a cultural icon and delivers a thrilling, high-octane experience. While it may not be the most nuanced film, its action-packed sequences and Stallone's performance make it a standout in the genre. The film's influence can be seen in countless action movies that followed, and it remains a beloved classic for its unapologetic embrace of over-the-top action and heroism.

Nicolas Cage can't be accused of making safe choices during his 40+ years of acting. He's appeared in his share of crap this century, but he also has plenty of terrific titles on his resume. Mandy is one of the best ones he's ever starred in and it's certainly one of his most unique. Director Panos Cosmatos leads Cage through a phantasmagoric odyssey of pain and brutality. The story takes a while to unfold, but it's fairly simple. After Nic and Andrea Riseborough's tranquility is shattered by some lunatics in a sick cult, he sets out to avenge her vicious and senseless death. Cosmatos (pronounced "Coz-MAW-tos") has only directed 2 films, but this and Beyond The Black Rainbow both have a hypnotic effect. And the violence in this mood piece really stings. So shout your best primal scream before you set out with a crossbow and The Beast during Revenge Month as the 583rd chat on Have You Ever Seen finds us trying to figure out the weird world of Mandy. Psyop Cinema ‘Mandy & Beyond the Black Rainbow' Dec 16th 2023 We are joined by Sean McCann for a discussion of the films of Panos Cosmatos, analyzing Beyond the Black Rainbow's MKUltra New Age horror and Mandy's dark psychedelic Nic Cage rampage. Getting into his biting commentary on 1960s boomer spirituality and 1980s Reagan conservatism, we discern which countercultural psyops Cosmatos is rejecting and which ones he wholeheartedly embraces. Dark goddess worship, Programmed to Kill style mind control, and dissociative power trips for the powerless make their usual appearances. Finally, we make some comments about "The Viewing," Cosmatos' episode of Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. In the realm of iconic action movies, few characters have achieved the legendary status of John Rambo. The name itself evokes images of a relentless warrior, a solitary figure pushed to his limits, and an embodiment of pure adrenaline-fueled heroism. At the heart of his enduring legacy lies this 80s Flick sequel that propelled the franchise to new heights. While the first film introduced audiences to the tormented veteran struggling to readjust to civilian life, the sequel thrusts Rambo back into the heat of battle as a one-man army risking his life to rescue forgotten prisoners of war from a Vietnam camp and their Russian allies. So grab your red headband, custom-made survival knife, and explosive arrowheads as Tim Williams and guest co-host, Gerry D from "Totally Rad Christmas" Podcast, discuss “Rambo: First Blood Part II” on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: The close-up shots of Rambo preparing for his next mission along with his iconic knife, were actually shot in a hotel room on what Cosmatos dubbed “Hurricane Day” since they could not leave the hotel due to the hurricane outside. According to the stats given by Murdock, Rambo has 59 confirmed kills during the Vietnam War. However, Rambo kills 74 people during the course of this film, which spans two days. So, in two days, Rambo kills more people than his whole time in the war. Despite its anti-government stance, President Ronald Reagan was a big fan of this film. Mike and Allyson asked their friend Dennis Burdziak for something "fucked up" to watch for their Halloween episode. Dennis delivered with an absolutely trippy mindfuck of a heavy metal descent into madness starring Nicolas Cage. Mandy was written and directed by Panos Cosmatos. It not only serves as a bizarre love letter to all things dark and metal, but also the over-the-top action movies his father George Cosmatos directed like Stallone classics Cobra and First Blood Part 2. It would have been really cool if Cosmatos also directed Stallone in Over the Top.

Ones a none stop one liner fest the other is a sequel to a movie that so misses the point of the original we wonder if the makers even saw it. On this week's annotated deep dive, The Cultists present Panos Cosmatos's 'Mandy' (2018). The anticipated (mostly unrelated) follow-up to Cosmatos's first cult film, Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010), Mandy hit the scene marketed as a heavy metal, genre-bending, "cosmic opera" of the psyche. Set in a 1983 (that may or may not be *our* 1983), Mandy is still stuffed with references, homages, and abstract nostalgia. And yet, set as it is under a plasma-churning landscape of "crimson primordial skies," swimming in Jungian mysticism, and unleashing Nic Cage wielding a giant Manowar battle axe, somehow, despite relying on a spine constructed out of the bones of so many old troupes, Mandy remains otherworldly and fresh. (Oh and it is FULL of annotations...). Deep Dives include: Douglas Roberts and that death row opening quote; The Jungian Red Book; Abraxas and his horn; Regan's "Spiritual Awakening" speech; the primordial lens of Galactus's comic origin story; the world of Dungeons and Dragons; Tor publishing; the (failed) singing career of Charles Manson; the pale emerald light of Heavy Metal's Loc-Nar (vs. the serpent's eye); that swimming mystic Joseph Campbell quote; the paradox of mysticism and psychosis; the myriad of 80's movie references; and that "Red" storm on Jupiter...
Not only is BEVERLY HILLS COP one of the biggest movie franchises, but it also helped propel a cross-genre of films still thriving today. Almost 40 years after its release, this film is as fresh as ever, and certainly a mega standout amongst action-comedy pairings. But what makes this movie so smart & thoroughly enjoyable goes deeper than just box office results. **Discussions include** The origin & evolution of story development involving multiple writers; finding a lead actor & director, plus where this film fits into their careers; creating a genre & how this comedy is comparatively unique; casting process & stories, use of improvisation, importance of & overlooked nuances of character chemistry; reception of the film, hit soundtrack, plus our thoughts on the entire BEVERLY HILLS COP franchise. With the recent release of Sir Nicolas Cage's Pig, it's time we reevaluate one of the more recent prestige Cage films with the wild ride that is 2018's Mandy. One-half a psychedelic, slow burn horror film, one-half blood-soaked revenge thriller, this one's a ton of fun. So take some recreational drugs or pop open that vodka bottle and dive down the rabbit hole with us as we debate which Nic Cage character would win in a battle royale, the most insulting movie ending of all time, the best musical score to write to, and a hell of a lot more with returning guest Michael Overby.Mandy's post-credit sceneMandy stars Nicolas Cage, Andrea Riseborough, Linus Roache, Richard Brake and Bill Duke. THROUGH A RED FILTERSuper-guest and theme song wizard Ryan of HOWLING FANTODS rejoins the GBU team to discuss Cage's unlikely late-career masterpiece MANDY (2018). As bracing and indelibly stunning a film as any in Cage's deep filmography, Panos Cosmatos' sophomore effort delivers as much mood, style, nerve and bravado as any film this century. This late in almost any actor's career almost nothing they do *should* come as revelation but Cage approaches that here with a wild performance equally as restrained as it is unrestrained. It is a marvel he matches the material at every step. CAGE UNCAGED would not exist if not for MANDY! In 2011 Cosmatos released his debut feature, BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW, which stylistically serves as dress-rehearsal for Mandy. Equally as moody and stylish, Rainbow takes cues from early 1980s sci-fi with more a Cronenberg chill than Mandy's raging grindhouse revenge aesthetic. Cosmatos financed Rainbow with residuals from Tombstone, which his late father, George P., directed. Made for a little over a million dollars, Cosmatos' clear vision is here from the start; He likes 1983, red filters, cults, and soundtracks that firmly plant you into his unique universe. This month is Action April at Catching Up On Cinema! Every week we'll be taking a look a blockbuster action flick from the filmographies of some of the greatest stars in action cinema. To kick things off, Trevor and his brother Matt review George P. Cosmatos' mid-80's action classic, Rambo: First Blood Part 2 (1985)! The first of several louder, dumber and more violent sequels to the surprisingly contemplative and engrossing First Blood (1982), the served to repackage the John Rambo character into the pop culture figure he's best remembered as, as well as secure star Sylvester Stallone's position as one of the most prominent of 80's action stars. Make sure to check out Matt's gaming podcast, Couch Co-Op!

This week The Cultists Present Panos Cosmatos's 'Beyond the Black Rainbow' (2010). Coming almost 10 years before Cosmatos's surprise Indie hit “Mandy” (2018), “Beyond” is a transcendental, atmospheric color wheel of a tale. One that tells the story of a young girl subjected to the obsession of one man's dreams to transform humanity into something “better”. Light on plot but heavy on craft and homage, Beyond The Black Rainbow is a visual odyssey stuffed with intertextual references and optical tricks. So join us as we deep dive into a film that remains, above all else, a meticulously composed love letter to mid-century science fiction. Topics Include: Mysticism in The "New Age”; The CIA's MK Ultra projects; the curious plight of Cold War era research in mind expansion and control; LSD in the 1960s; Outrun filmmaking; and those “Noriega” leathers...
