** #125 Alma 9: Face Off! ** :: The boring BUDDY-COP sermon without the BUDDY :: In this episode, Gigi and Patience dive into Christmas propaganda, and the eternal struggle of being a Lamanite in a Nephite world (or vice-versa because in a refreshing twist, Alma doesn't seem to see much of a difference in this chapter). Patience gets a job, then is fired for calling out someone's religious hypocrisy. And Gigi, suggests a career change as an "AI wrangler", like the kind potentially employed (but probably not) on the Church's suspiciously perfect "Light the World" campaign. The same campaign website has a silly "Kindness Randomizer," tool to suggest useless things to do over Xmas (that only make sense if you transposed the 1950s into 2024). Stuff like, making art for your dad, or sending a kind text. Gigi suggests productive ideas like "take in homeless people", or "clean your damn room." Patience suggests dad probably just wants 5 minutes alone. The duo tackle Oakes' recent devotional speech where he addressed accusations that LDS parents in Utah are excluding non-LDS peers from socialising with their spawn. Gigi suggests it's probably less intentional, and more a result of always being at church activities. But the real star of the show is Alma 9, where Alma and his "toy boy" Amulek deliver a fiery sermon full of threats, repetition, and stiff-necked insults. Gigi and Patience dissect the chapter, and Alma's obsession with being "cut off from the face of the earth", and his twist in favor towards the Lamanites. Turns out, God likes them better than the Nephites in this town, who are apparently just too blessed to function. But ultimately God seems to hate everyone he has made. Why doesn't he blame himself? The episode wraps with a wild tangent about Joseph Smith's probable adoration of itinerant preachers at tent revivals, his aversion to hard work, and his genius for turning religion into a lucrative business. Gigi and Patience fantasize about starting their own church, the "Church of the Big Fuck You," where tithes are replaced with "fuck you money." #Reasons to stay home this Sunday# - https://bookofboredom.com/reasons/ #Join the Blasphemy# - https://facebook.com/groups/BookOfBoredom #Patreon (Bonus Episodes)# - https://patreon.com/BookOfBoredom #Twitter# - https://twitter.com/BookOfBoredom #TikTok# - https://tiktok.com/@BookOfBoredomPodcast #Instagram# - https://instagram.com/BookOfBoredomPodcast #YouTube# - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMjDavWoT73Cev3IAie_XBA #Website# - https://bookofboredom.com/ A nice review on any podcast platform will help frustrate the Heavenly Father's boring plans for your future.

The guys open by discussing the Christmas elements of the film and why it feels less Christmasy than Die Hard. They talk about the movie's dark leanings, its unusual lead characters, and the effect they both had on the genre. We hear some speculation on Mel Gibson's stylist, some questions about bath time, and a lot about nog.  It's very tempting to say “we're too old for this shit”, but podcasting is fairly low impact, so we've probably got some good years left in us. Forty years ago this December saw the release of the most popular AND influential action comedies of all time.  This was star Eddie Murphy's immediate follow-up to his two breakout hits the previous years, 48 Hrs. in '82 and then Trading Places in '83, only THIS time he was the sole star above the title for the first time.  And Eddie did not disappoint with this fish-out-of-water comedy about a Detroit cop named Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) who travels across the country to Beverly Hills to investigate the murder of his best friend.  Even though that might not SOUND like the set-up for an comedic film, Murphy's gift for improvisation and a game supporting cast (John Ashton, Judge Reinhold playing two local cops whom he teams up with in Beverly Hills) bring a lot of humor to the proceedings regardless, along with a clever Oscar-nominated script from Daniel Petrie Jr and top-flight helming from director Martin Brest whose follow-up would be the even better Midnight Run four years later.  What results are memorable characters, quotable lines, and of course a kicking soundtrack including an iconic synth score from Harold Faultemeyer.  The Heat IS On! In the 1980s a handful of actors ruled the Action Genre. And one of the biggest, if not the biggest of that decade was the star of this movie, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Red Heat is a buddy cop movie with one major twist to the formula. While the unpredictable crazy Big City Cop is pretty standard to the formula, the other buddy in this movie is from Russia. Now that's “Zabavnyy”. James Belushi co-stars, so humor with a hint of "unpredictability" that is totally predictable, is probably guaranteed. Add some over-the-top action, a handful of one-liners galore, and at least a dozen reasons Arnold's character ends up in situations that cause him to become shirtless, and presto, we got an 80s action flick we couldn't be more excited to watch. Welcome back to the resurrection of the podcast that started it all—welcome to "Second Chance Schwartzy" with the indomitable brothers Aleks and Milenko! This time, they're revisiting the golden era of Arnold Schwarzenegger's filmography, kicking off with a deep dive into the 1988 buddy cop comedy, "Red Heat."Picture this: Arnold Schwarzenegger as Ivan Danko, a Soviet Union cop sent on a special assignment to the chaos of Chicago, USA. His partner in this odd couple adventure? The hilarious Jim Belushi as Art Ridzik. It's a fish-out-of-water story with a touch of the buddy cop dynamic that defined the era. While "Red Heat" might seem like a goofy comedy at first glance, the brothers reveal its hidden layers. The film cleverly explores the cultural clash between Danko's Soviet background and Ridzik's Chicago upbringing, emphasizing the surprising similarities between the two. Set against the backdrop of the dwindling Cold War tensions and the impending dismantling of the Soviet Union, the movie captures a unique moment in history. But that's not all—the plot thickens with Ed O'Ross playing Viktor Rosta, the notorious USSR drug pusher and big bad guy. The narrative weaves a subplot involving the Cleanheads, a Black liberation movement, drawing intriguing parallels between Black liberation in America and socialist principles in the USSR. It's a dense and captivating plot that unfolds against the backdrop of East meeting West."Red Heat" is a classic tale with an ensemble cast that's nothing short of iconic—Gina Gershon, Laurence Fishburne, Peter Boyle, and more. The movie surprises with its depth and intriguing layers, making it a classic worth revisiting. So, join the brothers as they unravel the intricacies of this Schwarzenegger gem in "Second Chance Schwartzy." It's a blast from the past that promises to be a great and surprising ride!

It's the feel-good Christmas movie of the year... that was released in March. Two detectives - one a family man who's getting too old for this shit, and the other a loose cannon who's deep into grieving the loss of his wife - are paired up to solve a homicide, and instead get caught in the middle of a massive drug ring. It's 1987's Lethal Weapon, and my guest to discuss it is Sebastian Posey, an award-winning podcast producer and journalist who's had a deep love for this film since he saw it as a kid. --- Music from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!): https://uppbeat.io/t/moire/space-ranger License code: RDDJNOUVQCDNNUPB

The Movie Wars crew was exhilarated to tackle two buddy cop classics in 1989's Lethal Weapon 2 and 1995's Bad Boys. Similar to Westerns, the Buddy Cop genre has been transformed and retooled, all while paying homage to a timeless formula. The chemistry between the lead actors drives both of these films. LW2 reveals that Riggs and Murtaugh are more like family than when they were introduced in the franchise's first entry, where they were beleaguered and struggled to reconcile their opposing policing methods. Bad Boys hinges more on Mike and Marcus' friction and bickering, leading to the ultimate payoff when their highly effective partnership is put on full display. Both films are anchored by comedic third wheels played by a pair of legendary Joes(Pesci and Pantoliano). How will the war score fair for these two genre titans? Give it a listen because you're never too old for this Movie Wars sh*t. Film SummariesLethal Weapon 2South African smugglers find themselves being hounded and harassed by Riggs and Murtaugh, two mismatched Los Angeles police officers. However, the South Africans are protected by diplomatic immunity, and so the two are assigned to witness-protection duty in an attempt by their captain to keep his job. It is only when this witness reveals to them that he has already dealt with the smugglers that the trouble really starts.Rating: RGenre: Action, Mystery & thrillerOriginal Language: EnglishDirector: Richard DonnerProducer: Richard Donner, Joel SilverWriter: Jeffrey BoamRelease Date (Theaters): Jul 7, 1989 OriginalRelease Date (Streaming): Aug 15, 2008Box Office (Gross USA): $144.9MRuntime: 1h 53mDistributor: Warner Bros. It follows a wealthy American socialite who finds herself preyed upon by two nefarious young siblings who indulge her in sex, drugs, and alcohol while she vacations at an Italian villa.
