If you thought the zombie genre had finally faded away, you were mistaken I'm afraid. The recent giant success of the HBO series, “The Last of Us” (40M viewers/episode in US alone) demonstrates the zombie franchise is as strong as ever. Ellie, Thad, and Bernice take giant bites into the intestines of the bizarre global obsession with these undead cannibals and what accounts for their astonishing longevity in popular culture. Enjoy the creepy and very funny cold open! Fans of the pod will recognize Scandal Sheet co-founder, Kassia, making one of her ‘drop in' appearances. CNN Footage of a ‘Zombie Walk', where hundreds/thousands of adults dress like zombies and parade through their city center in character. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDziaxaB1Os We discuss in the episode. Coming off of an eventful Valentine’s Day weekend, we are getting down to the business of the money whether it’s who's handling Britney Spears’ estate; Virginia’s decision to abolish the death penalty due in part to the high cost of state executions; how Kevin Hart got got for over $1 million; Halle Berry’s steeeeeep child support payments; or the measly $4.5 million being offered to the family of murdered Louisiana entrepreneur, Alton Sterling - we’ve got some insight for you. We also dive a bit deeper into the case of Alton Sterling with Louisiana State Representative and Eboni’s longtime friend, Ted James. Mr. James lends his expertise and insight as a political leader into the pros and cons of settlements in criminal cases. He also walks us through his life-threatening battle with COVID-19 and his thoughts on vaccination. For every nine people executed, one person on death row has been exonerated. The opioid crisis "a unique American problem". This piece uncovers the origin of some of the misinformation about opioids, the consequences of calling pain a "fifth vital sign" and the absurd practice of waking patients up in the middle of the night to ask them if they are in any pain. As these factors combined fatalities started to spiral into the crisis we see today. Recent statistics make for grim reading, in 2017 it was estimated over 47,000 Americans died from an opioid overdose. However action is now being taken; learn how The American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) has pushed forward with a sensible, responsible, pain management strategy which tackles the crisis head on. Opioids are a last resort, many cases do not need them at all and a 30 day prescription to a highly addictive substance is something practitioners should never take lightly. Furthermore ensure patients are well informed, not 'opioid naive' and ideally do not have a family history of opioid dependence. We apologize that todays episode is lower quality sound than our normal however we felt it was important enough to trade sound quality for much needed information on the Corona Virus (COVID19). As such we recorded this interview over the phone. BTW Dr Sutton was a trooper ...no hero..bc she did this interview even though just the day before she had a potential exposure to COVID19. So when she said lets do this over the phone instead we understood. In part 1 of this emergency session we are joined by Dr Madeline Sutton who has a long long list of credentials but served for 20 years (Until last year) as an Epidemiologist at the CDC. Dr Sutton takes some time to break down all the most current information on COVID19. In addition, she busts a few early myths. Again Dr Sutton was potentially exposed to COVID19 earlier this week and as such we decided to make the move to record via phone so the quality is not our normal - please forgive us but THIS IS MUST LISTEN TO INFORMATION!!!! Lastly, in order to get this episode to you as fast as possible (overnight) limited editing was done. Enjoy, take heed, be safe, and SHARE so your brothers and sisters can also be informed

In episode 12 of WeSTAT, JessK shares a deeply uncomfortable moment from the archives: grappling with her daughter's Asperger’s Syndrome diagnosis and whether to share it, with whom to share it, and when. Throughout the 40 minutes of this recording, JessK starts at the very beginning of their journey and takes us down the emotional road she and her husband had to travel as they worked to get their daughter support, the angels they encountered along the way, and what it still means for her, for them. Packed with statistics, useful information, and resources, above all, this episode is a love letter to her little girl. JessK shares her story as a tribute to those who hold the hands of children with special needs, and allows us to be a part of the emotional process of the retelling. She will leave you with a “moment of joy” as she highlights the work of the Eliza Hope Foundation (https://elizahope.org) and updates us on her daughter's amazing accomplishments thus far. S2: Ep 2-Careers In Public Health with Dr. Lauri Hicks from Center For Disease Control by Careers Infinite
The growing and powerful marijuana industry wants the public to believe that the drug they promote is harmless, or even beneficial for many medical conditions. But a major study of nearly 300,000 pregnant women in JAMA—the Journal of the American Medical Association—shows that getting high is dangerous for expectant mothers. An appalling 19 percent of pregnant California women between 18 and 24 used pot regularly during the first months of pregnancy; among mothers under 18, a full 22 percent indulged. Despite the belief that weed might help combat morning sickness discomfort, the CDC—the Center for Disease Control and Prevention—shows major perils for the unborn baby, including increased risk of low birth weight and serious developmental problems. Most women know they should avoid alcohol while bearing and then nursing a baby, but medical research shows they haven’t gotten the same important message about marijuana—which, despite its trendy popularity, threatens serious impact on both adults and their offspring.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's time to get healthy, get in shape, and our teen reporters don't disappoint. At a time when about 12.5 million American kids are dealing with obesity, and schools' physical education programs are being eliminated, the Center for Disease Control released findings that less than 25% of America's youth ages 12-15 are getting even 30 minutes of exercise a day. Hosts Katelyn Darrow and Youngjoo Ahn gets us ready for balanced eating and exercising regimes. Katelyn, who is an advocate of volunteerism, discovered a fantastic app called Charity Miles that helps you stay on task while earning money for specific charities. New health and fitness reporter, Henna Hendal encourages everyone to find an activity that is enjoyable and stick with it…dancing, skating, jogging…anything that gets you moving. Rachel Glass is getting toned and healthy with her pescatarian diet and regular exercise. Health Beat reporter, Nicole Eubanks doesn't eat cafeteria food and warns about the high amounts of fat, sugar, and oils in pre-packaged and fast food meals. It's a new year and health is wealth. Get up, get out, and be healthy.

Americans are romantics at heart, and many of our romanticized ideals are captured in our music, everything from the lone cowboy in the Eagles' "Desperado," to the rebel in George Thorogood's anthem "Get A Haircut," to Cyndi Lauper's "I Drove All Night." And while being a cowboy can indeed be a lonely profession, and getting a haircut isn't always a bad thing, driving all night, or more specifically driving while drowsy, is becoming an American epidemic. How much of an epidemic? To find out, I spoke with Dr. Anne Wheaton of the Center For Disease Control and Prevention, better known as the CDC. To read the summary of the report, follow this link: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm6151a1.htm. This episode originally posted in January 2013.
For todays show Gene examines the physical and cultural impact of the Center for Disease Control - better known as the CDC - the only government agency headquartered outside of Washington DC. The relationship between the CDC and Atlanta traces all the way back to the malaria epidemic of the early 20th century, but it has grown more over time. In the Atlanta community, the CDCs impact cannot be understated. It is measured by prestige, progress and even in terms of economic development, bringing new business to the city and to the region. Today, the CDC is also fostering an environment of collaboration: through design, through education, and even by way of Zombies…yes, Zombies. Our three guests are: (1) Dan Watch, an architect for Perkins+Will who helped lead the design of CDCs newest Atlanta campus (2) JULIE RHOAD, President and CEO of the NAMES Project Foundtion which oversees the AIDS Memorial Quilt and (3) DAVID DAIGLE. agency spokesperson for the CDC and creator of the Zombie Apocalypse campaign.
