Our host Dan Bova has been lucky enough to interview Ken Burns several times over the past few years. Burns, as you know, is quite the filmmaker, whose documentaries like “The Civil War,” “Baseball,” and “The Vietnam War” have earned him five Emmys and two Oscar nominations. He just premiered his latest work, the four-hour film “Leonardo da Vinci” — which he co-directed with his daughter, Sarah Burns and her husband, David McMahon — about the extraordinary life and work of the artist. So we thought this would be a good time to dig into an interview Dan did with Ken while he was promoting the Vietnam War documentary. Ken had so many incredible things to say about his process, the art of storytelling, and the state of entrepreneurship in America that we didn't have room for in the Entrepreneur magazine interview, so we went back to the tape and pulled out some incredible highlights from the cutting room floor for you to check out. For more than forty years, Ken Burns and his collaborators have created some of the most acclaimed historical documentaries ever made. Sarah Burns and David McMahon join him to discuss his legendary career, new film, and the people and events that molded our history.
David McMahon, originally from Newmarket on Fergus is currently based in Ukraine where he has been for over a year heading up a United Nations demining and explosives clearance programme. In 1989 two horrific crimes took place in New York City. The first was the rape and almost death of the woman who would be come to know as the Central Park jogger. The second was the arrest, interrogations, and ultimate prison sentencing of five Black and Latino teenagers, for that crime. A crime they would later be exonerated for, in 2002. It was during her senior year of college in 2003, while interning for a law firm, that Sarah Burns began the arduous process of unearthing the entire story, initially for her college thesis, to understand why and how these five teenagers could have been so falsely convicted. Almost a decade later, Sarah, simultaneously, along with her husband David McMahon, not only published the book, The Central Park Five; A Chronicle of a City Wilding, but along with her father, documentarian, Ken Burns, produced, wrote, and directed a film by the same name. The Central Park Five documentary received numerous awards in 2012/2013 and is still available to watch via streaming.

Pilots Syndie and David never expected their flight between Oahu and the Big Island to take a frightening turn. On July 15, 2016, both engines of their plane went out, leaving them with only minutes before impact into the ocean. Little did they know what would lie ahead: an epic 21-hour swim towards shore after a plane crash with temperatures below 70F. The journey was filled with unexpected obstacles. A deflated life vest left David struggling for hours, and encounters with jellyfish and a swim-by from a shark further tested their will and determination. But the thoughts of family and friends back home kept them going during this difficult journey. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/kaycee-mcintosh/support

We're back with a companion to 'Muhammad Ali', an epic 4-part documentary biography of one of the best-known men of the 20th century. Fiona is joined by Sarah Burns and David McMahon, co-directors, co-producers, and writers of the epic series which screens across SBS this month, and will stream at SBS On Demand. It's a fascinating conversation about how they and co-director Ken Burns approached the task of telling the definitive story of the three-time heavyweight boxing champion who, at the height of his fame, took American life — the racism, the religious biases, the role of celebrities, the role of sports in society — and refashioned it in his own image.
First, filmmaker David McMahon joined us for a deep dive on the amazing PBS documentary Muhammad Ali talking the man, the boxer, the life, the era, the impact and more. Then we talked about the ongoing story that has rocked the world of women's soccer leading to resignations and calls for reform, along with the larger reckoning going on for women in sports with the author of "Raised a Warrior," Susie Petruccelli
It's Casual Friday with a very special guest! Sam and Emma host Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota's 5th District, whose recent book, This Is What America Looks Like: My Journey from Refugee to Congresswoman, is out in paperback now! Representative Omar, Sam, and Emma take on a variety of issues central to the progressive cause as the Biden administration has begun to falter. They begin with key issues on immigration and refugees, as Ilhan Omar touches on the shameful continuation of Trump policies under Biden, particularly exploring the treatments of Afghan and Haitian refugees and the Biden administration's reliance on Title 42, taking on also why he has failed to stick to this campaign promise. Next, they move to the topic of student debt relief, as Congresswoman Omar dives into the mysterious missing memo that stands as the only thing preventing Biden from putting pen to paper with an executive order, and what could be behind the delay, before they jump to the topic of the reconciliation platform and how debt relief may or may not fit in. She, Emma, and Sam also dive into the discussion around reconciliation spending, why a shorter span on funding is easily okay by progressives if Sinema and Manchin will just clarify what they would like, and explore the developing role of the progressive caucus. They also touch on the legitimate ideas on both sides of the Holocaust, as per Texas's new education requirements that an "opposing" view be taught regarding the once in a century atrocity. And in the second half, Sam and Emma are joined by members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) union David McMahon (Local 52) and Fae Weichsel (Local 600) to discuss the recent developments regarding their strike authorization. Then Sam and Emma are joined by comedian Ben Gleib to discuss his recent dust up with Charlie Kirk! They run through the highlights of his very calm discussion with Charlie Kirk, including Kirk's anger and confusion regarding human anatomy, American citizenship, and what his role is within the right. Sam and Emma also touch on talking horses and John Deere, taking on the solidarity we're seeing all across the nation with this string of labor strikes, and Lindsey Graham doing some Republican-talking-point MadLibs on the wealthy Brazilian terrorists coming into our country, plus your IMs! Tens of thousands of members of the International Association of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) are currently voting on whether or not to authorize a strike. If passed, the vote could lead 60,000 workers to walk off the job and bring the entertainment industry to a halt. As consumers, we tend to associate the entertainment industry with acting stars, elite directors and producers, and big studio executives, but hundreds and and even thousands of workers make every production possible, and many of them are grossly underpaid, overworked, and denied basic necessities like breaks and time to sleep between shifts. Combined with the explosion of streaming services and ever-increasing demands for studio-quality productions, workers in the entertainment industry are being run into the ground, and they have reached a breaking point. IATSE represents over 150,000 technicians, artisans, and craftspersons in the entertainment industry, including live theatre, motion picture and television production, broadcast, and trade shows in the United States and Canada. The union is composed of many different locals, not all of which are currently voting to authorize a strike. According to Deadline, "there are actually two separate strike authorization votes going on—one among the union's 13 Hollywood production locals covered by the Basic Agreement, and the other covering 23 different locals outside Los Angeles who work under the Area Standards Agreement." In this urgent Working People episode, we talk to a panel of IATSE members about the work they do and the significance of the strike vote currently underway. A documentary on the life of Muhammad Ali will premiere on PBS on September 19th. Bob talks with Sarah Burns, who along with her father, Ken Burns and David McMahon, put the documentary together.
There has never been anyone like Muhammad Ali. The uniquely charismatic boxer from Louisville, Kentucky, who died in 2016 at the age of 74, was known for many things. One was the clownish bragging he did before all his bouts, likehis memorable rant at a September 1974 press conference before the “Rumble in the Jungle,” one of his famous fights with George Foreman, which earned him the heavyweight title — a title he held three times in a long and unparalleled career. Ali was revered by millions, reviled, at times, by many. He was more than an extraordinary athlete. He was also a generous philanthropist, a principled, committed and unshakable civil rights activist, and above all, a family man. And in a new, four-part documentary that will air on successive evenings on PBS beginning on Sunday (September 19), the story of his extraordinary life is told by the extraordinary filmmaking team of Ken Burns, Sarah Burns, and David McMahon. Tom spoke yesterday with Sarah Burns and David McMahon. They joined him on Zoom from their home in New York. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

42 Today: Jackie Robinson and His Legacy by Michael G. Long Explores Jackie Robinson’s compelling and complicated legacy Before the United States Supreme Court ruled against segregation in public schools, and before Rosa Parks refused to surrender her bus seat in Montgomery, Alabama, Jackie Robinson walked onto the diamond on April 15, 1947, as first baseman for the Brooklyn Dodgers, making history as the first African American to integrate Major League Baseball in the twentieth century. Today a national icon, Robinson was a complicated man who navigated an even more complicated world that both celebrated and despised him. Many are familiar with Robinson as a baseball hero. Few, however, know of the inner turmoil that came with his historic status. Featuring piercing essays from a range of distinguished sportswriters, cultural critics, and scholars, this book explores Robinson’s perspectives and legacies on civil rights, sports, faith, youth, and nonviolence, while providing rare glimpses into the struggles and strength of one of the nation’s most athletically gifted and politically significant citizens. Today is a special conversation, featuring two guests. Dr. Yusef Salaam was just fifteen years old when his life was upended after being wrongly convicted with four other boys in the “Central Park jogger” case. In 2002, after the young men spent years of their lives behind bars, their sentences were overturned. Now known as the Exonerated Five, their story has been documented in the award-winning film The Central Park Five by Ken Burns, Sarah Burns, and David McMahon and in Ava DuVernay’s acclaimed series When They See Us. Yusef is now a poet, activist, and inspirational speaker. He is the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from President Barack Obama, among other honors. Ibi Zoboi is a novelist and editor, born in Haiti, and raised in Brooklyn, she found a love of writing, and poetry and eventually pursued an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts, before launching a career in journalism and then fiction. Her novel American Street was a National Book Award finalist and a New York Times Notable Book. She is also the author of Pride and My Life as an Ice Cream Sandwich, a New York Times bestseller, and it the editor of the anthology Black Enough. The two met briefly some 21 years ago, for a walk and talk that would eventually bring them back together to collaborate on a YA novel called Punching the Air (https://amzn.to/2PkcRND) that integrates Yusef’s story, poetry and illustrations with Ibi’s powerful storytelling to create a novel in verse that speak powerfully to issues of equity, dignity, art as a form of therapeutic depression and restoration. We drop into so many points along each of their journeys, how they first met and the context for that meeting that would change both their lives and nearly 20 years later, they came back together to co-create this rich novel in verse. You can find Ibi Zoboi at: Website : http://www.ibizoboi.net/Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/ibizoboi/You can find Dr. Yusef Salaam at: Website : http://www.yusefspeaks.com/Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/dr.yusefsalaam/Check out our offerings & partners: Netsuite: Receive your FREE guide – “Seven Actions Businesses Need to Take Now” and schedule your FREE Product Tour - at NetSuite.com/GOODLIFEGiveWell: GiveWell searches for the charities that save or improve lives the most per dollar. And join our private Facebook group to experience the warmth and encouragement of our community first-hand! --------------------------------------- In this special edition 88 Cups of Tea podcast episode, we feature National Book Award Finalist Ibi Zoboi and Yusef Salaam of The Exonerated Five in conversation with 88 Cups of Tea guest-host Lelina Chang, an advocate whose work is focused on the intersection of racial equity and environmental justice. In 1989, Dr. Yusef Salaam was just fifteen years old when he was tried and convicted in the “Central Park Jogger Case” along with four other Black and Latino boys. The Exonerated Five spent between seven to 13 years behind bars, until their sentences were overturned in 2002. Since then, they received a multi-million-dollar settlement from the City of New York for its injustice and were profiled in award-winning films, including The Central Park Five documentary from Ken Burns, Sarah Burns, and David McMahon and the award-winning Netflix limited series When They See Us, written and directed by Ava DuVernay. In our podcast episode, Lelina interviews Yusef and Ibi about their newest co-authored novel in verse Punching the Air and how the book came to fruition. Yusef talks about the power of self-purpose and hope and how his spiritual journey was mirrored through the main character Amal while Ibi shares how she embraced and holistically weaved Yusef‘s stories and philosophies to craft a story told from a young Muslim, Black boy’s point of view. Further in, they break down and analyze two influential poems in the novel that speak to Yusef’s experience being boxed in with his thoughts and his own devices in his jail cell, and the power DNA has to tie individuals to the collective injustices of the past. Ibi shares how crafting her poems in different shapes and forms helps bring to life the meaning of the poems on the page. And later, they discuss what it means to bring about diversity with diversity and the crucial work that still needs to be done to create a holistic representation of communities of color in the literary world.
