After much arguing and threats of violence, Tormund finally agrees. His band won't be happy with the concessions, including forfeiture or any valuables and 100 boys at wards of the Night's Watch. They will meet again in three days to begin the process of transitioning south of the Wall.Jon rides with Val back to Castle Black. She wants to continue helping with the relocation of the free folk. Jon takes her to meet Queen Selyse Baratheon. Selyse is happy Jon secured the deal with the wildlings, but becomes angry when she learns there was no mention of bending the knee or taking R'hllor as their god. Val says if they are made to kneel the free folk will rise, blades in hand.Outside the tower, Val comments on Princess Shireen's greyscale. She calls it grey death and says the girl is already dead. She wants her nephew Little Monster away from the girl. A shocked Jon says he'll try. Val says he'd better succeed. He owes her.Jon meets a group of Night's Watch leaders and two wildling chiefs atop the Wall. Jon explains the situation with the wildlings relocating. The men push back on every detail of Jon's plan. How will we feed them? What about the Weeper? How will you keep them at the Wall? Will you train the wards in combat? Jon's answers are unsatisfactory, and Marsh says Jon is committing treason. She foresaw his sister Arya arriving and it was Alys. Melisandre insists the vision was clear, it was she who misread it. She is human.Next, Jon stops at the ice cells. She and her entourage have stopped at Castle Black on their way to the Nightfort. Before escorting her and Princess Shireen to the King's Tower, Jon warns the queen about the state of the Nightfort. The queen is undeterred. On the way to their quarters, the group meets Wun Wun, the giant currently living at Castle Black. He bends the knee to the southern royalty, but his laugh frightens the party and steel is drawn.Tycho Nestoris, an emissary of the Iron Bank, is part of the queen's party. As the Lannisters are refusing to make the crown's payments, Tycho will offer the bank's backing, if Stannis agrees to shoulder the debt. Jon and Tycho come to terms on a loan from the bank that will allow the Night's Watch to buy food to survive the winter. Jon also negotiates the use of Tycho's three ships, to add to the rescue party to bring the wildlings at Hardhome south of the Wall.Later on, Jon is told that a girl has been found and is resting in maester Aemon's chambers. Jon is hopeful he'll be reunited with his sister Arya. However, the girl is too old. She turns out to be Alys Karstark. She's seeking protection from Jon from her uncles, who plan to marry her off, create an heir, then remove her from the picture. In Part 5 of our recap and review of the final season of Game of Thrones, we finally run into some of the issues that Dave has heard about for many years. The wheels have not fallen off completely...but there is a very big alignment problem going on here. Episode 4 of Season 8, entitled The Last of the Starks, dealt with the aftermath of the ultimate battle between the forces of light and dark. The Night King and his army have been defeated, leaving just the humans to deal with all their frailty, issues, and emotions. In this Episode, no one can keep a secret, people make very poor decisions, alliances are shifting, betrayal looms on the horizon, dragons are ambushed, and a shocking death seems to have set everyone on the bloodiest path possible. One of her earlier predictions to Jon comes to fruition, as three rangers' heads are found on spikes north of the Wall. Melisandre tells Jon that Rattleshirt is the answer to Jon's needs. He can rescue Arya while Jon stays at Castle Black and fulfills his Night's Watch vows. Jon will not have this murderer anywhere near his sister. Melisandre is left with no choice. She removes the glamor and Rattleshirt transforms into Mance Rayder.Melisandre admits the man who burned earlier was Rattleshirt glamored as Mance. She reiterates that Mance is Jon's best bet to save Arya. Eventually, the wildling has to be dragged off Jon.Clydas interrupts with a letter from Barrowtown bearing the seal of House Bolton. Along the way he sees newly carved faces in the trees. Clearly the conversion to R'hllor hasn't universally landed.The new residents emerge to find that Jon can only spare starvation rations. Squabbles and arguments break out. Jon has a war horn blown to quiet the crowd.He explains that the defenders of the Wall get more rations, they need their strength. Any of the Free Folk are welcome to join. They don't have to take the Black, they don't have to kneel, but they do have to obey orders. Sixty three wildlings take up the challenge, but the Thenns resist looking at Jon with disdain. Bowen Marsh has mixed feelings about the new recruits. Mackelly and Simon fear that Stannis is not earning their loyalty.Chapter Review:Jon Snow joins Bowen Marsh to inspect winter food stores held beneath Castle Black. Despite past generosity from lords and a long summer, feeding Stannis' army and wildlings has depleted supplies. Marsh proposes winter rations early. Jon agrees, knowing it'll cause unrest.Jon later meets Stannis, Melisandre, and others in the king's solar. Stannis gifts Jon a controlled Rattleshirt as a soldier. Discussion turns to Mors Umber's terms for support. Stannis hesitates, but Jon urges acceptance, warning that rejecting Mors' terms would turn the North against him. Stannis reveals plans to take the Dreadfort, but Jon argues the Boltons will return too soon and crush Stannis' force. Pressed to arm wildlings, Jon reluctantly offers basic gear, wary of violating the Night's Watch vows. Privately, Stannis tempts Jon again with legitimization and Winterfell. Jon refuses but proposes recruiting Northern mountain clans instead. If successful, Stannis could retake Deepwood Motte and build support.
