A group called on the Democrat-dominated Michigan Legislature to boost electric vehicle incentives so the state can reach 2 million registered statewide by 2030. Illinois leads the Midwest race to register EVs with nearly 80,000 EVs, while Minnesota has 41,417 and Michigan has 34,380. For Michigan to reach its EV goal, it must register 280,803 EVs each year until mid-2030, which would require registering 23,400 EVs every month for seven years. The Clean Cars 2030 coalition called for Michigan to offer more EV incentives, citing a study from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy that ranked Michigan 26th nationwide for EV incentives. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/michigan-in-focus/support

It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. OCTOBER'S PURE-EV FIGURES UP 150% ON LAST YEAR "Pure-electric vehicle registrations in the UK achieved their third best month ever in October 2019 - and the highest total outside of a new registration plate month - according to the latest statistics from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT)." writes Next Green Car: "Pure-EV figures are up 152% compared to October 2018, and the fuel type is 133% ahead of the first ten months of 2018. More than 28,000 pure-electric models have been registered so far in 2019; over 54,000 plug-in vehicles when PHEVs are included in the figures." The Express said: "The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) data also revealed alternative fuelled vehicles now made up 9.9 percent of the overall UK car sales this month in a new record. Diesel sales are in terrible decline and plummeted to a 28.3 percent reduction on data from twelve months ago. The drop is the 31st consecutive month diesel sales have been in negative figures." https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8784/octobers-pureev-figures-up-150-on-last-year/ https://www.express.co.uk/life-style/cars/1200222/electric-cars-for-sale-uk-smmt-data-tesla TESLA BOOSTS MODEL 3 STANDARD RANGE+ SUPERCHARGING POWER TO 170 KW "Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus is getting an increase in Supercharging peak power to 170 kW in the latest over-the-air software update. The boost in Supercharger charging rate for the entry-level Model 3 variant represents a nearly 50-70% increase from its 100 kW to 120 kW charge rate, prior to the version 2019.36.1 update." according to Simon Alvarez at Teslarati: "Tesla’s release notes for the update were brief and direct. “Your Model 3 is now able to charge with increased peak rate power up to 170 kW,” Tesla wrote. The update will enable Model 3 Standard Range Plus owners with more convenience to conduct long trips, thanks to faster Supercharging sessions. Additionally, by increasing peak power at Supercharger stalls, Tesla is able to improve throughout at each station by supporting more vehicles per day." "A screenshot of Tesla’s release notes for the recent update was shared online by Model 3 Standard Range Plus owner and r/TeslaLounge subreddit member u/toddzman, who noted that prior to the update, his car would usually top out during Supercharging sessions at 456 mph at 100 kW. With the boost to a 170 kW peak supercharging rate, the Tesla owner noted that his Standard Range Plus Model 3 could potentially hit charging speeds of about 775 miles per hour of charge, provided that it is connected to a V3 Supercharger. " https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-standard-range-plus-supercharging-rate-170-kw/ TESLA REACHES PRELIMINARY BATTERY-SUPPLY DEAL WITH CATL "Tesla Inc. has reached a preliminary agreement to start using CATL as a battery supplier for cars made in China from as early as next year, and the companies are in talks to expand the relationship globally, according to people familiar with the matter." reports Bloomberg: "Following months of negotiations, the companies clinched a non-binding deal after Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk traveled to Shanghai in late August and met with CATL Chairman Zeng Yuqun for about 40 minutes, according to the people, who asked not to be named discussing private deliberations. Though a final agreement is expected to be signed by mid 2020, there is no guarantee that will happen, the people said. The South Korean battery maker won’t have exclusive rights to be Tesla’s battery supplier, people familiar with the arrangement said in August." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-11-05/tesla-is-said-to-reach-preliminary-battery-supply-deal-with-catl GERMANY INCREASES EV INCENTIVES TO STIMULATE DEMAND "Chancellor Angela Merkel's government and German automakers agreed to increase cash incentives for electric cars as they attempt to accelerate the transition away from the combustion engine." writes Automotive News Europe: "A so-called "Environment Bonus" for battery-powered cars priced up to 40,000 euros will be raised by half to as much as 6,000 euros ($6,680) per vehicle and the auto industry will continue to cover half the cost. The subsidy means that a midrange version of VW's new ID3 battery-powered hatchback will cost around 24,000 euros to 25,000 euros in Germany, analysts Evercore ISI said in a note to investors. Germany is closing in on Norway for European leadership with sales of almost 53,000 full-electric cars this year, according to the KBA federal motor transport authority." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/germany-increases-ev-incentives-stimulate-demand FORD'S ELECTRIC MUSTANG PROJECT CAR PACKS A MANUAL TRANSMISSION "Sports car enthusiasts will sometimes balk at electric cars due to their usual lack of manual transmissions (there's no need for a gearbox, after all), but Ford has hinted that stick shifting might not be completely dead." according to Engadget: "The automaker has partnered with Webasto on a Mustang Lithium project car (no, it's not the Mustang-like SUV) that mates a monstrous 900-plus horsepower electric motor with a six-speed, drag-race-ready Getrag transmission. You could have the thrill of dropping 'gears' without the guilt of spewing emissions, and you'd definitely feel it when there's over 1,000ft/lbs of always-available torque. The power is possible in part due to some cutting-edge tech. Like the Porsche Taycan, the Mustang Lithium has an 800-volt battery system." https://www.engadget.com/2019/11/05/ford-mustang-lithium-project-ev ELON MUSK: TESLA WILL INCREASE MODEL S/X BATTERY PACK CAPACITY WITH NEW PLAID MODE VERSION "Elon Musk confirmed Tesla will release a new biggest battery pack capacity for Model S and Model X with the new Plaid mode version coming next year." says Fred at Electrek: "The Model S “Plaid” is expected to become the new top-of-the-line variant for Tesla’s flagship sedan with a new powertrain and even some new performance hardware. Now Musk has confirmed that the powertrain will not only have 3 motors but also a bigger battery pack. Tesla has been rumored to update the Model S and Model X battery packs with the 2170 battery cells currently used in the Model 3 battery packs. Musk has previously said that the Model S and Model X platform would only allow for a maximum battery pack capacity of 120 kWh." https://electrek.co/2019/11/06/tesla-increase-model-s-x-battery-pack-capacity-plaid-mode-elon-musk/ FISKER'S PRODUCTION-READY OCEAN E-SUV TO DEBUT IN JANUARY "Automotive designer and entrepreneur Henrik Fisker officially disclosed details about his company's upcoming electric vehicle plans. His electric vehicle startup Fisker Inc. is set to debut its upcoming affordable, yet upscale electric SUV in the coming months that will compete with Tesla models." reports Manish at Future Car: "The battery-powered SUV is called the Fisker Ocean and the company will hold a private event to mark its global unveil on Jan 4, 2020. The event will also be live-streamed from the venue. Henrik said the Fisker Ocean will be a sustainable luxury electric utility vehicle that has been designed to incorporate recycled materials throughout.
