Some truths hit you like a lightning bolt. Others hover like clouds for years—until something cracks your heart open and lets the rain in. In this episode, Raghunath and Kaustubha explore the invisible barriers that keep spiritual truths from fully landing—the wisdom blockers that arise from fear, ego, or unresolved resistance. They unpack how knowledge matures through humility, devotion, association—and a willingness to get emotionally honest. Drawing from the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam and reflections on Henry Ward Beecher's insight, the conversation reveals how real wisdom requires more than intellect—it requires openness of heart.

John Adams, in a letter to the Massachusetts militia, dated October 11, 1798, said this: Because we have no government armed with the power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion, avarice, ambition, revenge, and licentiousness would break the strongest cords of our Constitution, as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other. What Adams was expressing was this idea that Constitutions such as the United States of America has only work when those who live under it can exert a strong degree of self-control.Adams wasn't alone in this view. To our Founding Fathers, it was “self-evident” that a democratic republic could only be sustained by those who were able to be self-controlled. Reflecting that thought, a contemporary German author and philosopher Johann Wolfgang von Goethe stated: “What is the best government? That which teaches us to govern ourselves.”A later prominent 19th Century minister, Henry Ward Beecher, simply said: “There is no liberty to men who know not how to govern themselves.”Self-governance consists of self-regulation of attitudes and actions. In keeping with this philosophy, the Founding Fathers believed that the success of our nation, our culture, hinged on both individual and community virtue - that is, moral character. This morning, we are still in the first chapter of James (wow!). And the text we are looking at is short - again, just three verses long, but HUGE in its impact. Because what we are going to see is the key, according to James, to being the people God has called us to be.

Amberly Lago, bestselling author of "True Grit and Grace: Turning Tragedy into Triumph," podcast host, peak performance coach, and founder of the Unstoppable Life Mastermind, describes her inspiring transformation from a backup dancer to a renowned thought leader, focusing on resilience and self-acceptance. She overcame a severe motorcycle accident and a debilitating nerve disease and introduced the concept of "pacing" to build resilience, emphasizing the importance of gratitude, community, and perseverance. She advises against lingering on regrets and stresses the importance of setting boundaries in the entrepreneurial journey. Her story illustrates a shift from seeking external validation to recognizing her intrinsic self-worth, contributing to the rapid success of her podcast and book.      Key Takeaways:   [01:50] Amberly shares that she had a breakthrough as a backup dancer in an MC Hammer music video, realizing her dream in her early career. She mentions that her  experience instilled qualities of grit and resilience, and she developed deep admiration for accomplished dancers. Collaborating with choreographers she respected brought immense joy and fulfillment. Despite changes in the dance industry, her passion for learning from and working with inspiring individuals remains unwavering in her current role in thought leadership and self-development.    [06:34] She mentions that she never discussed grace until experiencing a severe motorcycle accident and undergoing numerous surgeries to save her leg. As a former dancer and athlete, she was accustomed to pushing through pain, emphasizing grit and toughness. After finding out she had a nerve disease, she struggled to hide the pain and ended up feeling really upset, even turning to alcohol. Eventually, she learned to be kind to herself and handle the pain better. This made her want to talk about being emotionally strong, even to tough crowds, and encourage people to deal with and understand pain in different parts of life.   [08:21] Amberly shares her journey of resilience, stemming from a nerve disease, and introduces the concept of "pacing." Pacer, an acronym, includes Perspective, Acceptance, Community, Endurance, and Rest. She emphasizes gratitude, self-acceptance, and the transformative power of community for resilience. She also speaks about the significance of endurance, aligning passion with perseverance, and prioritizing rest in the entrepreneurial journey. Amberly then encourages unplugging, finding joy, and strategic recovery for fostering creativity and overall well-being.   [14:26] She shares her excitement about rebranding her podcast after five years. She acknowledges the challenges but emphasizes the meaningful connections and opportunities it has brought to her business. The podcast has allowed her to interview notable guests, including May Musk and Jamie Kern Lima, and create a community that resonates with her audience. The joy she derives from making a positive impact on people's lives through the podcast is a driving force behind her commitment to it.    [16:28] Amberly shares not to dwell on regrets or negative thoughts about her past challenges. She acknowledges the difficulties she faced after a life-changing accident that impacted her career and family dynamic. She mentions that despite a six-year journey of hospital visits, therapy, and overcoming depression, she found strength through gratitude. Expressing that gratitude has been her medicine, she recounts a moment in the hospital when focusing on the positive aspects of her life shifted her perspective.    [20:13] She shares the importance of grit in the entrepreneurial journey, highlighting the need for boundaries to prevent overworking. Drawing on personal experiences, she distinguishes between grit and resilience, stating that grit, while involving work ethic and perseverance, becomes resilience when combined with community and connection. Resilience, in her view, is the ability to choose joy and happiness despite setbacks, to repeatedly get back up, and to adapt to challenges. She metaphorically links resilience to navigating curves, underlining the importance of slowing down when needed.    [24:23] Amberly reflects on her journey of self-discovery, noting that her self-worth was initially tied to her career success and appearance. When these were stripped away due to the accident, she had to dig deep and humble herself, eventually realizing that intrinsic worth isn't determined by external achievements. The experience taught her to appreciate the resilience of the human body and spirit. She shares that the accident led to a profound shift in perspective, fostering a sense of self-worth independent of external validations.    [27:22] She mentions that within a year, she launched a podcast, secured influential guests, and published her first book, a testament to the power of belief and encouragement. She shares the importance of leaders seeing potential in their team members, even when individuals might struggle to envision their own success. It's the leader's responsibility to articulate and cast a vision, guiding others toward their full potential.   [29:45] Amberly reflects on the challenges she faced during her recovery from addiction. Attending twelve-step meetings and undergoing therapy, she emphasizes the difficulty of the process, acknowledging the importance of confidence. Grounded in self-acceptance, she proudly identifies as a recovering alcoholic while also embracing her role as a motivational speaker and top podcast host. Despite facing negative comments, she remains unfazed, emphasizing her gratitude, resilience, and grounded sense of self.    [32:38] She shares insights into her journey of self-acceptance and resilience after a life-altering motorcycle accident. She highlights the transformative moment when her doctor treated her deformed leg with care and appreciation, inspiring her to learn to love herself again. Discussing the challenges teenagers face with social media and self-image, Amberly emphasizes the importance of self-love and parental influence. Despite budget concerns, she is determined to create a meaningful and impactful experience for attendees.   [40:52] Closing Quote: Remember, we should not judge people by their peak of excellence, but by the distance they have traveled from the point where they started. -Henry Ward Beecher.    Quotable Quotes: "There is a way to PACE through pain."   "PACER stands for Perspective, Acceptance, Community, Endurance, and Rest."   "Acceptance is the key to any transformation."   "When you fully accept and embrace who you are, self-confidence and courage naturally emerge, empowering you to take decisive actions for a fulfilling life, make optimal business decisions, and prioritize your health."   "Grit without connection and community is merely resistance."   "We experience burnout when we forget why we're doing what we're doing."   "It's crucial for leaders and entrepreneurs to find time for rest and recovery."   "Gratitude changes everything."   "You need grit to be successful because being an entrepreneur is not easy."   "Resilience is your ability to choose to move forward and have the courage to lead a life of joy and happiness."   "You have to discover who you truly are."   "We are all worthy as is."   "It is helpful to have someone believe in you before you can believe in yourself."   "I don't just teach them how to be a speaker; I give them a platform."   "If you can do it and find joy in the journey, we will ultimately reach a better place."   This is the book mentioned in our discussion with Amberly:     Resources Mentioned: The Leadership Podcast | Sponsored by | Rafti Advisors. Editor's note: Beacon was created in 1913 from Matteawan and Fishkill Landing. 150 Years Ago (February 1874) Lewis Tompkins of Matteawan planned to start a hat factory at Fishkill Landing. He proposed to spend $25,000 [about $675,000 today] of his own money and raise $30,000 from residents in investments of $500 [$13,500] and $1,000. Tompkins had already built the carpenter shop and purchased 13 carding machines in Boston. The ferryboat Union attempted to cut a channel through the ice between Fishkill Landing and Newburgh but after 3 hours it had gotten only a third of the way across. A few passengers got off the boat to walk. Following speeches by Henry Ward Beecher and William Cullen Bryant at the annual banquet in New York City of the Rural Club, its president asked each guest to name a favorite tree. Beecher cited the tulip tree but suggested that someone should compile a guide to all the best trees in the country, including an elm he admired in Fishkill Landing. Charles Sales of Fishkill Landing was accused of stabbing a man named Graham in the cheek during a fight on Liberty Street in Newburgh. The Fishkill Standard reported that a farmer named Hoyt, driving from Matteawan to Glenham, pulled so hard on the bit that he broke his horse's jaw. A skeptical reporter followed up and learned that G.W. Haight of Glenham had only presumed he broke the animal's jaw because it did not eat for several days after his hard tug. Three years after Nelson Luckey sold the 180-acre Mercellus farm to Chauncy Knapp for $40,000 [$1.1 million], he bought it back at a foreclosure sale for $10,000 [$270,000]. State officials stocked 3,000 salmon from the McCloud River in northern California, 15,000 salmon trout and a healthy number of black Oswego and rock bass in Sylvan Lake, Wappingers Creek, above the dam at Wappingers Falls and above the dam at Brinckerhoffville. G.W. Valentine, who ran the stages from Matteawan to the Fishkill Landing ferry, applied to the state Legislature for a 20-year monopoly. Patrick Balton was finishing a two-story brick dwelling at Fishkill Landing measuring 33 by 37 feet, and with a French roof. The Fishkill Landing Machine Co. received an order for a 125-horsepower steam engine with a 22-inch cylinder. The morning after Joseph Anderson's wife, Clara, asked him for a spoonful of medicine from a bottle borrowed from a Fishkill Landing neighbor with a label that read "paragorie" [a patent medicine that was 4 percent opium] she was found dead in bed. The liquid was instead laudanum [a pain reliever that was 10 percent opium]. W.H. Lyon, a Newburgh jeweler, owned a model of a steam-powered fire engine that was less than a foot long. It could propel water 10 feet through 3 feet of hose and a pin-head nozzle. Prof. Franklin, an "itinerate phrenologist," according to the Fishkill Journal, was hustled out of a boarding house on a Sunday because of his obscene language at the supper table. He left Fishkill Landing that evening on the milk train after being pelted with eggs that the newspaper said stuck in his "luxuriant, flowing hair." In its "Horse Notes" column, The New York Herald reported that Willard Mase of Matteawan had purchased a 6-year-old trotting gelding named Mountaineer that had been raised by Charles Schofield in Putnam County. The horse was 15 hands and 3 inches high [63 inches] and could run a mile in 2:30. 125 Years Ago (February 1899) Matteawan officials were courting Richard Croker to locate his new automobile factory in the village. Two Chinese businessmen from Cold Spring opened a laundry in Matteawan and cut prices so low that they angered all their competitors. The Rev. R.F. Bates of Fishkill Landing wrote to a New York City judge on behalf of his brother, Cary, who had been convicted of assault for shooting two men during the "race riots" in August at 39th Street. At sentencing, Cary's lawyer argued that his client had acted in self-defense and was convicted because he was Black. The judge interru...

Pascale  --------------------- FULL TRANSCRIPT --------------------- Hello, beautiful souls!  A warm welcome to Week 3 of The Gratitude Experiment.  Thank you for joining episode 317 of The Everyday Life Balance Show. I'm your host Pascale Gibon.    To all our American listeners, Happy Thanksgiving week! May this holiday be a joyful time with your loved ones and friends.    It is easy to lose sight of gratitude when hope seems distant, but I urge you to reconsider its power.   Let us draw inspiration from an excerpt about human nature and hope from Nelson Mandela's biography.  Despite the harsh reality of his imprisonment, Nelson Mandela saw hope and humanity. He believed in the inherent mercy and generosity in every human heart, a belief that sustained him even in the darkest times.    Here is the extract:    “I always knew that deep down in every human heart, there was mercy and generosity. No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than the opposite. Even in the grimmest times in prison, when my comrades and I were pushed to our limits, I would see a glimmer of humanity in one of the guards, perhaps just for a second, but it was enough to reassure me and keep me going. Men's goodness is a flame that can be hidden but never extinguished.”   Nelson Mandela's resilient heart is a testament to choosing hope and gratitude in the face of adversity.  Imagine how different his experience might have been if he had succumbed to hatred or resentment. His ability to see the light, even in the grimmest circumstances, is a powerful lesson in gratitude.   Gratitude is your glimmer of hope and your heartfelt expression of appreciation.    As we reflect on Mandela's wisdom, this week, let us embrace the magic of reinvention and creation.  Albert Einstein famously said: “Imagination is more powerful than knowledge.” Each day brings the opportunity to reshape our lives through our creative power.     As you gather with family and friends for Thanksgiving, share a moment of love by seeing the light in each other.    I invite you to engage in a meaningful practice: count your blessings from a place of gratitude.  Ask yourself, what blessings have enriched your life?  Then reflect on how acknowledging these blessings makes you feel.  As you build the habit of daily gratitude you grow a loving heart.    Henry Ward Beecher beautifully said:    “Gratitude is the fairest blossom which springs from the soul”    In our first week, we explored remembering the love we have received. Often, we overlook all the love given to us, but gratitude helps us acknowledge and cherish it. Think about the times you have felt grateful and how it uplifted your mood.    You are the architect of your life.  Your perceptions shape your reality.  The Gratitude Experiment is here to guide you towards focusing on abundance and the positive aspects of your life.   I encourage you, for this week's gratitude challenge, to count your blessings.  Share your stories and progress on my Facebook fan page or our private community on Facebook Awaken Your Authentic Self Community.    Join me next Monday as we continue to enhance our happiness through gratitude. Remember, when you say yes! to love, you say yes! to life.    I wish you a fantastic week filled with gratitude, care, abundant love and light.

http://bible.com/events/48950458 Church of the Nazarene - Harrisonburg Learning & Unlearning: Compassion Compassion may be what the people around you need most. Can they count on it from you? Series Purpose: We must gain a perspective on how living as a Christian may be different now that we are, for the most part, on the “other side” of the pandemic. We will grasp that there are things to “unlearn” – setting aside old ideas – and “learn” gaining new understanding for real outreach and discipleship post COVID. Today's focus: It's been said that we are living in a “desert of empathy” or “drought of compassion.” As believers, we may be the only source of love and compassion left in our day-to-day world.-Compassion is at an all-time low in our society. Researchers have begun to use the term 'compassion fatigue' to describe this widespread decline in the ability to feel and act from a place of compassion.-One researcher states it this way, "Essentially, compassion fatigue disturbs the ability to think clearly, modulate emotions, feel effective, and maintain hope."‭‭Matthew‬ ‭24:12‬‬Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold,‭‭ Mark‬ ‭6:30-34‬‬ The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things. Jesus begins teaching - out of a heart of compassion. Compassion is his initial response. He leads with compassion. If Jesus's response is compassion, what is ours? ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭22:34-40‬‬ Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”-We can never escape the fact that, Jesus couldn't give just one – Love God. He had to give the second (remember, He was only asked for “the greatest.”).-Jesus is saying that 'all the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments'. All the truth of God hangs on these together. Bottom Line: Compassion may be what the people around you need most. Can they count on it from you?Verses for further study/reflection: Colossians 3:12-13 Matthew 14:14 1 Peter 3:8 "Compassion costs. It is easy enough to argue, criticize, and condemn, but redemption is costly, and comfort draws from the deep. Brains can argue, but it takes heart to comfort. "Samuel Chadwick" Compassion is sometimes the fatal capacity for feeling what it is like to live inside somebody else's skin. It is the knowledge that there can never really be any peace and joy for me until there is peace and joy finally for you too." Frederick Buechner "Compassion will cure more sins than condemnation." Welcome to Day 1909 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Joy Magnified – Daily Wisdom Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps. We are on Day 1909 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote and some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. So we are on a daily trek to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on today's trek as we increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16)  How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver!    If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Henry Ward Beecher, and it is: Affliction comes to the believer not to make him sad, but sober; not to make him sorry, but wise. Even as the plow enriches the field so that the seed is multiplied a thousandfold, so affliction should magnify our joy and increase our spiritual harvest. Joy Magnified Until we gain a proper perspective of affliction, we will always be discouraged, depressed, and playing the role of a victim. Everyone faces affliction during various seasons of life. No one is exempt. As Christ-followers, this is part of the maturation process. Affliction should bring a time of contemplation and wisdom. A seed will never grow unless it is first planted in soil that has been disrupted and turned inside-out. When a seed is planted, it not only produces a plant, but it will multiply that single seed into untold thousands. Yet, the seed must first endure hardship and even be destroyed so that new life can spring from its core. When affliction pierces our lives, it should magnify our joy and increase our harvest by laying down our lives to bring forth a harvest of blessings into the lives of others. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+12%3A24-26&version=NLT (John 12:24-26) I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives. Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity. Anyone who wants to serve me must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me. As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, please encourage your friends and family to join us and come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' I have a confession to make–I always wanted to be a gameshow host; unfortunately, I have a face for radio. That said, a guy can dream and I always saw myself hosting Jeopardy and if there was a clue about today's guest it would be, A Pulitzer Prize winning author who does not identify as a writer. The answer, of course, would be ‘Who is Debby Applegate?' MEET DEBBY APPLEGATE Debby Applegate is an American historian and biographer. She is the author of The Most Famous Man in America: The Biography of Henry Ward Beecher, for which she won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography. Her latest book is Madam: The Biography of Polly Adler, Icon of the Jazz Age.  KEY TOPICS IN THIS EPISODE How Debby transitioned from a career in academia to a career as a writer. What she found most curious about the life of Henry Ward Beecher. The inspiration behind her latest biography about a Madam during the Jazz Age. The noteworthy people, including a US President, who were known to visit Polly Adler's brothel. Our mutual appreciation for The Love Boat! KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM MY TALK WITH DEBBY Research pays off. Debby is a research addict, which explains why it took over a decade to write Madam. It paid off though, the book was an instant bestseller, earning well-deserved recognition from audiences and critics alike. Get them turning the page. Debby's contract for her first book, for which she won a Pulitzer Prize, was canceled by the publisher after they received some early chapters. Debby decided to take it upon herself to learn how to write in a way that would keep readers turning the page. To do that, she studied how to write mysteries, thrillers, and even pornography!  Be resilient. Many may have thrown in the towel after having their contract canceled, but Debby rolled up her sleeves and went back to the drawing board. If there's one thing I've learned from successful authors like Debby is that talent alone isn't enough to make it as an author—resilience is key. WHERE TO BUY MADAM AMAZON.COM; BOOKSHOP.ORG GET IN TOUCH WITH DEBBY Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/debbyapplegate/ Website: http://www.themostfamousmaninamerica.com/ Linked In:  linkedin.com/in/debby-applegate-0459446 MEMORABLE QUOTE "My goal was to get the reader to read the next sentence and then the next paragraph. To then turn the page and, God willing, to get to the end of the chapter and then to the end of the boo. To do that, I had to get people wondering what's going to happen next, or what's going to be said next, or wondering why that thing that they just described happened. So I thought, well, okay, that means suspense essentially. How do you create a feeling of suspense that gets people to keep going? So I went to the library and looked up books about how to write thrillers and how to write mysteries, which I knew nothing about. And I started doing the exercise; what does my protagonist want? What is standing in the way of my protagonist? What is the backstory? What is the climax? I even read one great essay about how to write pornography because I mean, who succeeds better and putting ideas in your head than pornographers?" Kids have so much to teach us! Their perspective is so pure and innocent, and in observing them we can learn how to be better humans. Join me as I share some of the lessons I have learned from children in my life. And here are the quotes I shared at the beginning of class :) “Children are the hands by which we take hold of heaven.” — Henry Ward Beecher, reverend and social activist “The soul is healed by being with children.” — Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Russian novelist and philosopher “Every child you encounter is a divine appointment.” — Wess Stafford, President Emeritus of Compassion International “You can learn many things from children. How much patience you have, for instance.” — Franklin P. Jones, American humorist “Children see magic because they look for it.” — Christopher Moore, writer “While we try to teach our children all about life, Our children teach us what life is all about.” — Angela Schwindt, home schooling mom “Pretty much all the honest truth telling there is in the world is done by children.” — Oliver Wendell Holmes, author and poet “Children seldom misquote. In fact, they usually repeat word for word what you shouldn't have said.” — Author unknown “Don't worry that children never listen to you; worry that they are always watching you.” — Robert Fulghum, author “Children are a great comfort to us in our old age, and they help us reach it faster too.” — Author unknown “If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. We are so thrilled to be talking with Thea Wirsching today about her work The American Renaissance Tarot. Thea takes us through her journey of conception and creation and shares how she wants this tarot deck to help us "enchant our sense of the American past". Find Thea online at theplutobabe.com americanrenaissancetarot.com and one Instagram at @the_pluto_babe and @americantarot Head over to What The Smut to take a look at all of the cards we discuss today.  Thea sees its deck somewhat like Our Tarot: A Guidebook and Deck Featuring Notable Women in History as the cards can be reviewed and absorbed one at a time to learn about the American Renaissance period, the literature, and the occultism. Thea and the deck are a treasure-trove of knowledge and we started out by talking about the role of women by discussing Victoria Woodhull who was a free lover and presidential candidate. Miss Woodhall was jailed for publishing the truth of Henry Ward Beecher's (represented on The Pope Card) extramarital affair because it was deemed pornographic. We discussed Elizabeth Stoddard (on the Queen of Wands) and her novel The Morgesons (the 6 of wands) in contrast with Harriot Beecher Stowe (the Queen of Cups) and Susan Warner. Check out Theas blog 19th-century goth for even more about Stoddard. We also talked about Margaret Fuller's (the Empress Card) fall from grace, Emily Dickenson's (High Priestess) secret life, and the movie Wild Nights with Emily as discussed on the podcast Dyking Out. Switching gears we talked about Herman Melville and the sperm squeezing in Moby Dick (Four of Wand) and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. Paschal Beverly Randolph's (Lover card) contributions to occultism in contrast to the Fox sisters (The moon card). Thea turns us on to complex marriage with John Humphrey Noyes and his feminist sex-positive commune at the Oneida house. Continuing in the commune theme we discussed The Blithedale Romance (Three of Cups) by Nathanial Hawthorn and finished up with incomparable Walt Whitman (The World Card) and Leaves of Grass.

Welcome to Day 1818 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom A Sense of Humor – Daily Wisdom Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps.  We are on Day 1818 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Henry Ward Beecher, and it is: A person without a sense of humor is like a wagon without springs--jolted by every pebble in the road A Sense of Humor Life is too short and absurd not to have a robust sense of humor.  It's good to laugh with others and at yourself as often as possible.  Granny and I share great laughs together every day.  Usually, at something silly one or both of us have done or said.  Humor not only makes life easier to live, but also it is good for your body, mind, and soul.  Without humor, life is rough and can be miserable.  A life without humor is like living with a pebble in your shoe, or riding in an old wagon without any springs or suspension.  So be willing to laugh at yourself.  We all do silly things each day.  A sense of humor is the oil of life's engine.  Without it, the machinery creaks and groans.  No lot is so hard, no aspect of things is so grim, but it relaxes before a hearty laugh.  So lighten up and laugh and live.  Look for humor in everyday life. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm%20126%3A2&version=NLT (Psalm 126:2) We were filled with laughter, and we sang for joy.  And the other nations said, “What amazing things the Lord has done for them.” As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' If you would like to listen to any of our past 1817 treks or read the Wisdom Journal, they are available at Wisdom-Trek.com.  I encourage you to subscribe to Wisdom-Trek on your favorite podcast player so that each day's trek will be downloaded automatically.  If you would also like to receive our weekly newsletter called ‘Wisdom Notes,' please email me at guthrie@wisdom-trek.com. In 2007, Debby Applegate won a Pulitzer Prize for “The Most Famous Man in America,” her biography of the 19th-century preacher and abolitionist Henry Ward Beecher. Applegate's new book, “Madam,” is another biography, of a very different subject: Polly Adler, who ran a brothel and had many famous friends during the Jazz Age in New York City. On this week's podcast, Applegate describes the challenges of running a business in the underworld.“You have to depend on your reputation,” Applegate says. “You can't advertise, you can't sell your product in a normal market square. So you have to cultivate your own kind of word of mouth and your own kind of notoriety. Polly worked out of small but luxurious apartments that were hidden away and constantly moving, so she could stay one step ahead of the cops or other crooks. What Polly did was use that small town but big city of Manhattan, which was really thriving in those years between World War I and World War II, and she became a critical player — a ‘big shot,' as the gossip columnists called her.”Matthew Pearl visits the podcast to discuss his new book, “The Taking of Jemima Boone,” about the kidnapping of Daniel Boone's daughter in 1776. Pearl is well known as a novelist, and he says that this work of nonfiction has many of the elements he looks for in any good story.“Jemima is such a strong and incredible character to work with,” he says. She was one of the Boones' 10 children, though “not all of them survived into childhood or adulthood, and Jemima was one who was very close with her father, in particular, and she had really her father's spirit of persistence and independence.”Also on this week's episode, Elizabeth Harris has news from the publishing world, and Dwight Garner and Jennifer Szalai talk about books they've recently reviewed. Pamela Paul is the host. Here are the books discussed by The Times's critics this week:“The Oxford Companion to Spirits and Cocktails”“Accidental Gods” by Anna Della SubinWe would love to hear your thoughts about this episode, and about the Book Review's podcast in general. TheEverydayLifeBalanceShow|Transform Your Life!|Weekly Interviews and Insights on Life Balance and Harmony With Bestselling A

................................. FULL TRANSCRIPT ................................. Hi, welcome to Week 3 of The Gratitude Experiment. I'm Pascale Gibon. Thank you for listening to episode 224 of The Everyday Life Balance Show. As you know The Gratitude Experiment is a 7-week experiment and I am very grateful for your participation. Henry Ward Beecher said: “Gratitude is the fairest blossom which springs from the soul.”  This quote on gratitude reminds us to look at life with humility and avoid taking things for granted. Since you are participating in 7 Weeks of Gratitude Experiment 7, let's throw unfairness out of the window and continue to develop a loving heart.  I know it can be challenging to be grateful when life seems full of obstacles and things are not going well. Gratitude might be the last thing on your mind. You might feel dispirited right now, discouraged and losing hope. However, can you believe that this too shall pass? The difficulty might be a temporary setback, and you can empower yourself again through the power of love, meditation and prayer.  I invite you this week to count your blessings and see a glimmer of light and hope on the horizon. There is a passage that I love in Nelson Mandela's autobiography Long Walk To Freedom that I want to share today:  When Nelson Mandela was imprisoned he chose peace. He declared: “I always knew that deep down in every human heart, there was mercy and generosity. Men's goodness is a flame that can be hidden but never extinguished.” Here are your high-value action steps on week 3 of the Gratitude Experiment: Please reflect upon and write down in your journal what being grateful means to you. Count your blessings throughout the week and from now on. I look forward to connecting with you next Monday. Remember when you say YES! TO love you say YES! To life. Forgiveness ought to be like a cancelled note - torn in two, and burned up, so that it never can be shown against one." - Henry Ward Beecher         How unforgiveness affects our ministry Poisons our hearts toward showing grace Poisons our tongues Poisons what we show our church   Steps to forgiving Recognize that you're showing a double standard. Recognize that your  showing forgiveness doesn't lessen how they hurt you. Recognize that your forgiveness isn't dependent on their attitude. Don't bring up your past hurts any more to yourself, your family, and your church.   Don't be held captive by past hurts - release yourself to show a new picture to your church.

Rebel Bulldog tells the story of Preston Davidson, a Northerner who fought for the Confederacy, and his family who lived in Indiana and Virginia. It is a story that examines antebellum religion, education, reform, and politics, and how they affected the identity of not just one young man, but of a nation caught up in a civil war. Furthermore, it discusses how a native-born Hoosier reached the decision to fight for the South, while detailing a unique war experience and the postwar life of a proud Rebel who returned to the North after the guns fell silent and tried to remake his life in a very different state and nation than the ones he had left in 1860.The book uses not just Preston s story, but that of his family as a lens to help us glimpse the past. Preston s paternal family had strong ties to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, his grandfather was a prominent Presbyterian minister, and family members studied at and helped to lead Lexington, Virginia s Washington College (now Washington and Lee University). The maternal side of Preston s family tree included some of the most important Whig politicians in Indiana s young history, including his other grandfather, Governor Noah Noble. Preston s parents helped found Indianapolis s Second Presbyterian Church, and were married by the congregation s newly named minister, Henry Ward Beecher. It was through these connections that Preston and his siblings met Beecher s sister, Harriet, as well as interact with an elderly former slave of their great-grandfather Noble (whom the governor had brought to Indiana to freedom), a man known around Indianapolis as Uncle Tom.Committed to faith, education, and community, Preston and his elder brother, Dorman, were enrolled by their father in Ovid Butler s North Western Christian University as part of the second entering class (1856 57). However, with rising sectional tensions, the boys' father, Alexander Davidson (himself to be a leader in the Constitutional Union Party), decided that both of his sons also needed to spend time in Southern schools of higher education. Dorman attended the Virginia Military Institute, only to come home in the wake of John Brown s raid on Harpers Ferry. Preston, undaunted by the prospect of war, went to his father s alma mater, Washington College. He was there to witness the election of 1860, Virginia s secession, and, despite his father s protests, it was there that Preston enlisted alongside his cousins in the cause of the Confederacy.Preston served for the duration of the conflict, rising from the rank of private to lieutenant, surviving multiple wounding, the deaths of friends and family members, and the accusation (which helped lead to his eventual court-martial) that despite his service he was not really loyal to the South. After the war, he returned to Indianapolis, where he re-encountered the family he had left behind (including Dorman, who served briefly in the midst of John Hunt Morgan s raid) and sought to make sense of the new America, one without slavery, that was rising out of the ashes of war.Davidson s story is one that delves into the human experience on multiple levels, asks us to reconsider what we think we know of the Civil War, and complicates, while it complements the existing literature. It is a story that perhaps could only have happened in Indiana.Jason S. Lantzer is the author of three books, Prohibition is Here to Stay: The Reverend Edward S. In the age of the railroad, social movements, revivals, and campaigns for political office spread like wildfire across the United States. Leaders and their surrogates could go travel faster than ever before, even as industrial capitalism overthrew the public and private relationships of a previous era. As would-be movement leaders discovered their growing power to reach a national audience, their experience speaking to gathered crowds in city after city and town after town produced a new style of public address. Jeremy C. Young‘s The Age of Charisma: Leaders, Followers, and Emotions in American Society, 1870-1940 (Cambridge University Press 2017), traces the history of that new style from the theoretical foundation laid down by its forbears in the 1840s, through the battles over charisma's power at the height in the early 1900s, to its eventual decline as a new technology, radio, again flipped the script on what it meant to address a national audience. The Age of Charisma is a fascinating history of a period in which followers came to believe in their right to an emotional connection to their leaders, something that we could not imagine our democracy without today. Between theorists and writers like Gustave Le Bon, who urged that charismatic leaders use their powers of persuasion and control to shape society for the better, and William James, who pushed back and urged for an understanding of crowds as intellectual bodies of people whose role in a movement is the flowering of their agency and personal power, leaders like Theodor Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Eugene Debs, and Billy Sunday worked to win souls and elections using the style and techniques that were pioneered by James Rush and Henry Ward Beecher. Thomas Carlyle's ideas, reaching the US in 1841, that following noble heroes ennobles the self and society, echoed down the years in the soul-saving work of revivalists like Charles Finney and the efforts of social reformers to harness the power of charisma to draw followers into the fight for social change. The suspicion of others, like Ralph Waldo Emerson, who saw nobility in individual self-reliance over and against collective commitment to shared purpose, served to stoke the fears of many that charisma would be put to nefarious ends as magnetic leaders reduce their hysterical followers to instruments of their seductive will. Using a wealth of archival work, synthesizing decades of original newspaper reporting, early photography, and personal testimony, and delving into collections of follower testimonies in journals, letters, and more, Young explores both the perspectives of leaders who harnessed the power of charisma for their cause, and the experience of following charismatic leaders as an American in the early twentieth century. Young's research overturns our expectations about how leaders and followers saw themselves, their relationships, and their place in an unstable political, economic, and religious landscape. All told, The Age of Charisma provides a rich and detailed picture of the effects of charismatic leadership, and of the people who followed them, on the present and future shape of American society. REFLECTION QUOTES “…he was also a man of large public spirit whom doing good to his fellow man was a pleasure—one almost might say a passion…” ~Said of Benjamin Lee Guinness (1795-1868), Guinness & Company “In every deliberation, we must consider the impact on the seventh generation… even if it requires having skin as thick as the bark of a pine.” ~The Great Law of the Iroquois Confederacy “The sluggard says, ‘There is a lion in the road! A lion is in the open square!' As the door turns on its hinges, So does the sluggard on his bed. The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; He is weary of bringing it to his mouth again. The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes Than seven men who can give a discreet answer.” ~Proverbs 26:13-16 “The real difference between men is energy. A strong will, a settled purpose, and invincible determination, can accomplish almost anything; and in this lies the distinction between great men and little men.” ~Thomas Fuller (1608-1661), English preacher, historian, and author “The difference between perseverance and obstinacy is, that one often comes from a strong will, and the other from a strong won't.” ~Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887), American clergyman “[Philip Seymour Hoffman] hated what he was good at. It tormented him. I think he wanted to be so good, but it was such a difficult place…to get to. It had to all come from the inside.” ~Anton Corbijn, Dutch photographer and film director, on the lead actor of his latest film “Same old song, just a drop of water in an endless sea All we do crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind.” ~Kerry Livgren in “Dust in the Wind” (1977) SERMON PASSAGE Genesis 1:26-28, 31 26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 31 God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. Genesis 2:1-2:3, 5, 7-8, 15-17 1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts. 2 By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made. 5 Now no shrub of the field was yet in the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for the Lord God had not sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground…. 7 Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. 8 The Lord God planted a garden toward the east, in Eden…. 15 Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. 16 The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.” Genesis 3:16-19, 23-24 16 To the woman He said, “I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you will bring forth children….” 17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you…have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it'; Cursed is the ground because of you; In toil you will eat of it All the days of your life. 18 “Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; And you will eat the plants of the field; 19 By the sweat of your face You will eat bread, Till you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return.” 23 Therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken. 24 So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life. Colossians 3:23-24 23 Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve. 1 Corinthians 15:58 58 So my dear brothers and sisters, stand strong. Do not let anything move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your toil in the Lord is never wasted.
