This week on Factual America, Matthew Sherwood is joined by Miles Coleman, writer and co-producer of Netflix docu-series, FIFA Uncovered.  When the Fédération Internationale de Football Association – more popularly known as FIFA – was founded in 1904, its remit was simple: to oversee a competition between various footballing nations.  Today, however, it is a multi-billion dollar organisation that operates almost as a nation state. FIFA Uncovered explores the governing body's rise and the fall of FIFA executives following allegations of corruption in 2015. How did it happen? As Miles tells Matthew, money is at the heart of the matter. It began over fifty years ago when sportswear firm Adidas wined and dined FIFA executives in order to become a major partner. Over the years, people and interests who wanted to win at all costs passed money to executives to make sure the ‘right' decisions were reached. For example, and allegedly, the grant of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar. Miles discusses the challenges of making a documentary about a subject people either know everything or nothing about, of interviewing people in the age of Covid, and his determination to let the FIFA executives interviewed in the docu-series tell their own story. He looks at the hot topic of sports washing, how FIFA preferred dealing with repressive regimes to democracies, and what benefit a country like Qatar gets from holding the World Cup: it begins with good PR but goes far beyond it. The Football World Cup starts in a week's time, but the Qatar tournament has been riddled with scandals even before it's begun. The Guardian is reporting 6,500 migrant workers have died in Qatar since World Cup was awarded to the country, although their government says the numbers are misleading and there has only been 37. It comes as Netflix releases a new series called FIFA Uncovered, that revealed the World Cup was bought through bribes. The Qatar World Cup kicks off a week from now. It is the most controversial World Cup in the history of global soccer body FIFA and has been enveloped in controversy from the moment Qatar won its hosting rights in December 2010. A four-part documentary, FIFA Uncovered, that has just premiered on Netflix, documents much of this and links the Qatar controversy to the broader issue of the soccer body's corrupt culture. It features fresh interviews with several former officials, among them some of the allegedly most corrupt sports officials of our age, saying they did nothing wrong. Several of these officials speak extensively in public for the first time. Miles Coleman, the producer and writer of the documentary, is here to discuss all of this.

FIFA uncovered (Netflix) - Die Liberbros @Tele-Stammtisch Der Tele-Stammtisch im Doku-Fieber. Oder doch eher Fußball-Fieber? Egal, auf jeden Fall haut Netflix knapp zwei Wochen vor Auftakt der Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft in Katar die Doku-Miniserie "FIFA Uncovered" raus. Aus unserer Redaktion hat sich Fußball-Experte Timo dafür extra seinen Bruder Malte vom gemeinsamen Podcast "Die Liberbros" geschnappt, die insgesamt vierstündige Talking Heads-Doku vorab weggebingt und ausführlich zusammen mit ihm besprochen. Wer auf gute Mafiafilme steht, der dürfte die ein oder andere Parallele zum Paten bemerken. “The worst World Cup ever” is how PR Week describes Qatar's hosting of the event. The latest controversy was just this week, after the tournament's ambassador said in an interview that being gay was “damage in the mind”. Meanwhile, human rights groups have been calling on players to protest on the pitch. So how did the World Cup end up being awarded to Qatar in the first place? Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp says it's partly the fault of journalists who "should have sent a message" about the country's unsuitability years ago.
