Florida Politics Publisher Peter Schorsch gives the inside scoop on the contentious battle between Florida Republicans.
What happens when a Republican author slams Trump's tariffs, calls out Medicare cuts, and pushes back on RFK Jr.'s health claims—all on a progressive podcast? In this episode of Lean to the Left, host Bob Gatty speaks with Michael Goodwin, Florida Republican and author of the political satire Vice Versa. With Wall Street experience and a sharp pen, Goodwin offers a rare, candid take on Trump's economic missteps, the Supreme Court's troubling direction, and the damage being done to Medicaid, Medicare, and biomedical research.
In this packed episode, Chuck opens with a sobering assessment of President Trump's plummeting approval ratings and questions about his administration's credibility before diving into critical structural concerns about the Department of Justice's independence and the need to expand the House of Representatives. He shifts to Florida politics, where a brewing corruption scandal threatens the governor's race and Republicans are increasingly willing to challenge Ron DeSantis's weakened political standing. New York Congressman Dan Goldman joins for an extended interview about the concept of rule of law before and after his experience during impeachment proceedings. Goldman offers insights into Trump's challenges to fundamental constitutional principles and proposes concrete reforms to better protect America's democratic institutions, including codifying limits on presidential interference in prosecutions, strengthening congressional subpoena powers, and potentially restructuring the Justice Department with Federal Reserve-like independence. The episode's second half features political handicapper Dave Wasserman analyzing the evolving electoral landscape heading into the midterms. Wasserman explains how understanding local communities is crucial to predicting election outcomes, while lamenting the lack of quality coverage in smaller markets. He delivers a forecast that Democrats could see sizable gains in the House, with Trump's tariff policies potentially hurting Republicans in farm states. The discussion explores gerrymandering's changing impact, with both parties now complaining about the practice, and examines how the 2030 census might reshape the electoral map. Finally, they discuss the prospect of a “blue wave” in the 2026 midterm elections and whether we could see one or both chambers of congress change hands.Timeline00:00 Multiple polls show sharp approval rating drop for Trump03:00 Trump's spokespeople are losing credibility05:00 Department of Justice needs more independence 7:30 The House of Representatives needs to be expanded8:45 White House Correspondents weekend was awkward12:15 Corruption scandal looming over Florida governor race13:15 Florida Republicans are no longer afraid of Ron DeSantis15:30 Ron DeSantis may be weaker, but Florida Democrats aren't stronger17:00 The Shedeur Sanders commentary was ridiculous19:10 Congressman Dan Goldman joins the show19:40 What are the highlights of his district, NY-10? 26:35 What did "rule of law" mean to you before and after working on the impeachment proceedings? 30:25 Fundamental tenets of rule of law are being challenged 31:00 Amendments 4-10 are about equal protection under the law, for citizens and non-citizens 34:20 Trump has exposed why government is susceptible to leaders willing to break their oath of office 36:10 We need to codify into law that the president can't weigh in on individual prosecutions 38:40 Enforcement of congressional subpoenas needs legal teeth 41:30 Should we set up Justice with a level of independence like we did with the Federal Reserve? 48:40 If impeachment couldn't hold Trump accountable, why would the justice system? 50:10 Trump's conduct warranted prosecution 52:55 The impeachment process is broken 54:10 Trump has an unexplained infatuation for Vladimir Putin 7:25 The Republican majority in the House has turned all of their authority over to Trump 1:01:40 What can Democratic members of congress do other than speak out? 1:05:25 If Democrats want to win in 2026, what should they be talking about? 1:08:55 Is Andrew Cuomo vs Eric Adams really the best that NYC can do?1:14:45 Chuck's thoughts on his conversation with Dan Goldman1:17:35 Dave Wasserman joins the show! 1:19:35 Mainstreaming interest in political handicapping 1:24:05 Understanding a local community is crucial to handicapping 1:27:05 Smaller markets not getting coverage they deserve 1:28:20 Determining how competitive a race will be? 1:31:05 House map is less skewed than it used to be 1:34:35 Complaining about gerrymandering has become more bipartisan 1:36:05 Democrats could see sizeable midterm gains 1:42:50 How will retirements affect the midterms? 1:4:05 Tariffs will cost Republicans in the farm states 1:45:05 Kansas headed toward swing state status? 1:48:05 Reappropriation from 2030 census could add several new red seats 1:49:35 Can Republicans further gerrymander states like Texas and Florida? 1:53:35 Virginia governor race isn't that competitive 1:58:50 Conventional wisdom is that Democrats shouldn't choose a woman for 28 1:59:50 Is a blue wave developing? 2:01:05 Trump doesn't care about Republicans other than himself2:03:16 Chuck's final thoughts

The emerging Florida Republican majority took a thud in 1970 as Reubin Askew won back the Governorship for the Democrats and ushered in a decade of Dem dominance in the state up-and-down the ballot.
In this episode: Since taking total control of state government 25 years ago, Florida Republicans have systematically rolled back reforms that once kept state courts independent. It was a project launched by Jeb Bush, expanded by Rick Scott, and that has now culminated under Ron DeSantis with a Florida Supreme Court that is a rubber stamp for the governor and Legislature — and a roadblock for anyone who dares to challenge them. Learn more about how it happened from Martin Dyckman, a Florida journalist and historian whose investigative reporting once exposed Supreme Court corruption and spurred some of the very reforms that have been undone.Show notes:Read this Dyckman column in the Sun-Sentinel explaining some of the history and changes in more detail. And if you want to do a truly deep dive into the subject, check out his book: A Most Disorderly Court: Scandal and Reform in the Florida Judiciary (and don't forget his biographies of Govs. Reubin Askew and Leroy Collins, too).Questions or comments? Matt Gaetz may be leaving Congress — and not to take a place in Donald Trump's cabinet — but there's little chance the Florida Republican will fade off into the darkness. More likely Gaetz will continue to be outspoken and reveal unpleasant truths, such as his recent allegation that a foreign government — albeit one he refused to identify — was responsible for murdering Jeffrey Epstein. Jimmy and guest Ian Carroll discuss just which foreign government Gaetz could possibly be talking about. Plus segments on Marjorie Taylor Greene's calls to expose all the reports on Congressional sexual misconduct, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirming that his country would arrest Benjamin Netanyahu if he sets foot on Canadian soil and Rachel Maddow taking a $5 million pay cut at MSNBC. Also featuring Kurt Metzger and Mike MacRae. And a phone call from Joe Biden!

Florida Republican says opponent's Humanism 'should disqualify her' from officeThe Friendly Atheist, By Hemant Mehta, on October 16, 2024https://www.friendlyatheist.com/p/florida-republican-says-opponentsIn Florida's District 38 State House race, the political landscape is heating up as Democrat Sarah Henry faces off against Republican incumbent David Smith in a highly anticipated rematch. This contest is particularly noteworthy due to the scrutiny surrounding Smith's campaign tactics, which have drawn criticism for their negative nature. Henry, who previously worked as a Communications associate for the American Humanist Association, brings her experience in advocacy and progressive values into the race. The dynamics of this election reflect broader trends in American politics, where negative campaigning often overshadows substantive discussions about policy and vision. Henry's campaign aims to respond to these tactics by emphasizing her commitment to constructive dialogue and progressive issues that resonate with constituents. As the election approaches, the focus will likely remain on how both candidates navigate the challenges of campaigning in a polarized environment and what this means for the future of District 38.The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.44.2 featuring Scott Dickie, Damien H, Kelley Laughlin and Stephen HarderBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

The clock is ticking. It's not just that we have endless untapped political opportunities in red states. It's that if we fail to utilize them, Democrats will eventually fill the vacuum, as we are seeing in Alaska, Georgia, and Arizona. I discuss as a case study the story of the Kentucky governor banning mental health counseling for kids suffering from gender dysphoria. This is able to happen in a state Trump carried by 30 points only because we have failed, and continue to fail, to place conservative ground game and education in states where voters broadly agree with us on the issues. I contrast this to Florida, where on issue after issue, DeSantis is utilizing power to destroy the Left. But even there, most Florida Republicans will go back to their old ways unless we elect a governor who is of the same caliber as DeSantis. Learn more about your ad choices. The more Trump falls behind in the race, the more he seems inclined to move to the left and blame his electoral problems on conservatives rather than his own image. I go through some of his recent lurches to the left — not for the purpose of saying to stay home but to begin building a parallel movement to fix the GOP beginning today. Voting for Trump over Harris is not mutually exclusive with remaining true to who we are down-ballot and on the issues, even when that conflicts with Trump. Next, I delve deeply into a budding fight in Florida, with almost every elected Florida Republican purposely picking a fight with DeSantis over a tiny development project in a few state parks. The same people who refuse to join any of his fight against the Left, including on ubiquitous abortion and marijuana use, are suddenly feigning outrage over quality of life in the parks. It's built on insidious lies and exposes the fact that the Florida GOP is as bad as it always was. We need to do major surgery on this party no matter what happens in November. Joy leads this episode of The ReidOut with a scandal in Florida, involving the Chair of Florida's Republican Party, Christian Ziegler. Ziegler is now under criminal investigation for allegations related to sexual battery, according to a complaint filed by the Sarasota Police Department. Joy and her guests discuss this plus Ziegler's wife Bridget Ziegler's anti-lgbtq activism as co-founder of Mom's for Liberty. Plus, new warnings about former President Trump's plans for a second presidency, which some say would move the country into a full-blown autocracy. Also, Ayman Mohyeldin joins Joy to discuss the latest on the ground in Gaza, with civilians receiving mounting pressure to flee despite no real options with Israel and Egypt refusing to allow refugees. This comes as U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin delivered strong remarks Saturday, about Israel needing to protect civilians in Gaza, calling them the center of gravity in Israel's war with Hamas. All this and more in this edition of The ReidOut on MSNBC.

Governor Ron DeSantis is running for president on the argument that he'll do for America what he's done for Florida. So what's it like in Florida? Prologue: Florida is now the fastest growing state, and DeSantis says people are moving there from all over because of him. We speak to people who did make the move, at least in part, for DeSantis's policies. (6 minutes)Act One: Among the big items in DeSantis's run for president is medical freedom. Producer Zoe Chace wanted to understand its appeal and its growing popularity. So she spent some time in Sarasota County, where one man — at the side of former Trump appointee Mike Flynn — is creating a sort of little parallel universe for this very thing. (33 minutes)Act Two: DeSantis has passed law after law about what can and can't be taught in Florida classrooms, starting as early as elementary school. And last spring, Florida Republicans introduced a bill initially proposing to ban things like critical race theory and identity politics, or students majoring in things like gender studies in Florida universities. Reporter Emmanuel Dzotsi followed how things unfolded at one of the biggest universities there, Florida State, from the bill's introduction all the way to its passage. He explains how professors and students have been preparing. (25 minutes)Act Three: Among the legislation introduced by DeSantis that has passed is a ban on minors receiving transition care. The bill passed into law a few months ago. We speak with a teen whose family has since had to flee the state in order to access the care they needed.
