Having to think about what you're going to tell your employer about why you're not able to come to work can compound the difficulty. In the UK you are not entitled to any time off work if you experience miscarriage in the first six months of pregnancy. But today, the Women and Equalities Select Committee is hearing evidence for the case of extending your right to bereavement leave to the first 24 weeks of pregnancy. Sarah Owen MP, Chair of that Committee is in the Woman's Hour studio.Baroness Lola Young of Hornsey has spent the last 20 years as an independent crossbench peer in the House of Lords, championing social justice causes such as the fight against modern slavery and promoting ethical fashion. She was also one of the first black women to enter the Lords. Lola Young, Baroness Young of Hornsey, grew up in care, and when she left school, she worked first for the gas board, then as a social worker and as an actor on stage and television. The idea that she would one day sit in the House of Lords never crossed her mind. When she was in her early 30s she decided to study for a degree. That led to a PhD, academic posts and eventually a Professorship in Cultural Studies at Middlesex University. She entered the House of Lords as a crossbench peer 20 years ago, where she has campaigned for change in areas such as modern slavery and fast fashion. She recently wrote a memoir called Eight Weeks, in which she pieces together her upbringing, drawing on care records and her own reflections on her childhood. Her music choices include works by Ravel, Errolyn Wallen, Philip Glass and Puccini. Presenter Michael Berkeley Producer Clare Walker

My guest today is one incredible woman. Baroness Lola Young of Hornsey is an actress, academic, campaigner for social justice and a cross bench peer in the House of Lords. By anyone's standards she has achieved.  She studied at the New College of Speech and Drama and started her career as an actress in the 1970s and 80s, before becoming professor of Cultural Studies at Middlesex University. In 2001 she received an OBE and became an independent peer in the house of lords in 2004, where she has actively campaigned against modern slavery and unethical fashion, amongst other things.  But before all that, from the age of just 8 weeks old, Lola moved between foster care placements and children's homes. Then, at the age of 18, she was pushed off what she calls “the care cliff”. Now that childhood is the subject of Eight Weeks, her stunning memoir of a childhood in care and her journey to discovering her own story.  As she says herself, when people say “this is my friend Lola, she grew up in care, now she's in the house of lords” it misses out rather a lot of steps on the way. Lola joined me to tell me how it felt to start trying to weave together the scattered parts of herself in her 50s and how growing up in care turned her into an activist. We also discussed everyday racism, what it's really like being a Black woman in the House of Lords, her conflicted relationship with visibility and why somebody has to go first so it might as well be you.  * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Eight Weeks by Baroness Lola Young and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. In today's episode of the Tranquil Awakenings Podcast, Debbie will be in conversation with David, a yoga practitioner who is also an experienced nurse and mental health practitioner. David initially began his yoga practice for fitness, in time noticing that the benefits went way beyond this, assisting with mental and emotional wellbeing, and spiritual connection. During this conversation, David discusses the parallels he has made between the medical model and within therapeutic and energetic practices such as yoga and different types of therapy, noting how these can play a vital role in supporting our health and well-being. KEY TAKEAWAYSThere is often an overlap between different types of therapies and well-being practice. When we resist life's circumstances, we struggle. We have innate wisdom within us to heal and release.Acceptance is an important aspect of healing. When we take care of our needs, it is easier to make better judgements and decisions. It is important to be able to honour and release different emotions. BEST MOMENTS“I see it in the way we respond when we have to go into a particular posture in yoga or one of the asana. This, and a lot of the grounding techniques that we accept, you know, that calm the nervous system, science recognizes them, they have been around for millennia.”“I think we still have the wisdom; I think innately we have it; I think it's ingrained. If you look at animals and kids for instance, like if a dog's stressed and it gets away and shakes off, doesn't it? You know, we do that as humans, but we kind of stop ourselves doing it because of the way we might look, you know, or how we're perceived.”“I mean the asana, the postures themselves, there's no hierarchy in them. So, I struggle in Sukhasana, which is easy pose. I struggle in that. But these postures I think are meant to represent the challenges in life. You know and completing them isn't the aim, it's how you respond to them.”“The most important relationship in the world is with yourself.”“And that's what suffering is, isn't it? It's resistance.”“And the more we do this, these little maintenance things for our lives, whether it is exercise, sleep, hydration, you know, co-regulation, you know, being with others, these little, tiny things, what that does to you is it affirms you, and you're then able to make better, more well-informed judgments and decisions.” HOST BIODebbie is a seasoned therapist whose journey from being a primary school teacher to an adept therapist has been fuelled by her fascination with the intricacies of human nature. Equipped with advanced certifications in diverse modalities like hypnotherapy, neuro-linguistic programming, mindfulness, meditation, past life regression and many more she has honed her expertise to bring about transformative change. As a full-time therapist and trainer, Debbie's driving passion is guiding others, as well as herself, towards their best selves. Embracing the concept of holistic beings, she firmly believes in addressing the mental, emotional, physical, social, energetic, and spiritual facets of well-being and healing. Hosted on Acast. Lola Young, Baroness Young of Hornsey, is the latest guest on Lord Speaker's Corner. In this episode, Baroness Young speaks to Lord McFall of Alcluith about her work tackling modern slavery, race and inequality in the creative sector, and why consumers should challenge companies to do better when they source materials.Baroness Young has extensive experience telling truth to power. From challenging the workplace dress code of her employer in 1971, to pushing for representation as an actor, to calling on major fashion brands to improve their practices, Baroness Young has regularly campaigned for change.‘It was to criminalise forced labour and domestic servitude and like virtually everybody else, including people in this House. I said, "Well, isn't that already a crime?" And no, it wasn't. Forced labour on these shores… in essence, that was the start of this country's towards the Modern Slavery Act, which was six years later.' In 2009, Baroness Young worked with Anti-Slavery International to put forward amendments to the Coroners and Justice Bill. She talks about the importance of that work and how it has led her to go further, working with the fashion industry to tackle issues in their supply chains and improve transparency.Discussing why consumers should hold companies to account for the products they buy, Baroness Young explains ‘some industries will have a supply chain that's metaphorically miles long… [companies] have to take responsibility for it because otherwise what happens when the people who live by a particular river in China find that they can no longer use the water from that river because it's dyed red… We again, are implicated in that practise. So we have to hold businesses to account.'‘If you think about any one of the scandals that have happened recently, you can talk about Post Office, you can talk about Windrush, you can talk about Grenfell, all of those different things. We always say, "We are never going to let this happen again." And then the next time we say, "We've learned our lesson, it's not going to happen again." And then the next time we say, "We've learned our lesson."' Baroness Young also explains the need to go beyond inquiries to truly understand issues that face society, explaining ‘these trite phrases don't provide any comfort to the people who suffer.'See more from the series Find out how members engage with charities and campaigners to make change happen Hosted on Acast. Paul Ibiza is the man responsible for bringing the world the legendary records label Ibiza Records, he is the promoter that organized cutting edge events Fantastic Ibiza, Jungle Splash and MC Convention to name but a few. More recently Paul aka Digital Niyabinghi has been producing “Jungle Dub” and taking his Digital Niyabinghi Sound System on tour. Although Paul could be labelled as a Producer, Promoter, DJ, Label owner, Paul simply describes himself as an entrepreneur within the music industry. Paul got started in the rave business in 1988 around the time of events such as Sunrise and Genesis were putting on raves in fields and warehouse in the London region. Although Paul actually got started in 1988 his journey started way before in the early 80's in the days of Soul II Soul and Paul Anderson among other house and warehouse parties which is where Paul was first influenced by the Reggae and Soul played at these parties then known as or “Blues” or “Shebeens” (Shebeen being the Irish term for an illicit bar or club where excisable alcoholic beverages were sold without a licence). In 1989 Paul was involved in organising the ‘Freedom to Party' rally in Trafalgar Square which aimed to relax licensing laws in order to allow nightclubs to stay open longer. Paul then started promoting the ‘Fantastic Ibiza' raves in Goods Way, Kings Cross with DJ's such as Carl Cox, Colin Dale, Kenny Ken, Grooverider. Many of these weekend long parties were attended by upwards of 3000 people and did not always have an entry fee but rather the money was made by donations and drinks sales. After the Police attention was getting excessive due to overcrowding both inside and outside the venue in Kings Cross, Ibiza records was born in 1989 after Paul went to the Balearic Island of Ibiza and ended up breaking his leg. While Paul was immobile he started learningPaul Ibiza how to produce music using Cubase on the first Ataricomputers capable of sequencing music along with an Akai S950 sampler and Spirit mixing desk. Soon Ibiza Records would set up their offices and studio in Hornsey, North London. When Ibiza records first begun they were making Techno, Hardcore and House types of music, coupled with Dub & Reggae influences the music now known as Jungle emerged which Ibiza Records was championing along with labels and artists such as Shut up and Dance, Rebel MC, Reel 2 Reel and a Guy Called Gerald. Ibiza Records went on to establish a number of successful spin off labels such as Boxbase, Highly Blessed, Hard Plastic, Three Lions, Kemet, 3rd Party, Limited-E. Paul also opened up a record shop ‘Ibiza Records' in Kingsland Road, Shoreditch, London in the early 90's. In 1994 Jungle Splash was born and still continues to this day. Paul's vision for Jungle Splash was to showcase the best of Jungle music much like an exhibition for the scene. Jungle Splash has moved from many venues over the years such as The Rocket complex in Holloway, Roller Express, The Mass and is currently held at Jamm in Brixton, London. In 2003 Paul promoted the MC Convention event convention under the ‘Highly Blessed' brand in conjunction with Mc Shabba and Skibadee. The event met with some resistance from some people that thought putting the focus on the MC's as opposed to DJ's was bound to ensure that the event would flop. In this episode we welcome Lloyd Bradley into our Hammersmith lair and ask him about his career as a journalist and as the acclaimed author of Bass Culture and Sounds Like London — the latter book celebrating its 10th birthday at the time of recording. We learn what London sounded like to Lloyd as a boy growing up in '60s Hornsey, and how his love for music led to writing for Blues & Soul and then NME and Q. He talks us through some of the key themes of Sounds Like London — his history of "100 years of Black music in the capital" — and particularly the homegrown reggae sub-genre known as "lover's rock" and the rise of grime as a hybrid of UK garage, hip hop, jungle and dancehall. Discussion of lover's rock leads us to clips from a 1998 audio interview with Steve Barrow, founder of dub/roots-reggae reissue label Blood and Fire — and then to how Lloyd came to write 2000's mighty Bass Culture: When Reggae was King. After a short discussion of soul legend Bettye LaVette — and her journey from early '60s Atlantic Records to the Anti- label in the mid-noughties — we pay tribute to the late Tina Turner and her epic story of survival and self-reinvention Mark quotes from highlights of his additions to the RBP library, including Richard Harrington's Washington Post review of the last gig Lowell George ever played and Tony Scherman's exhaustive Musician interview with session drummer Earl Palmer. Finally, Jasper talks us out with his remarks on pieces about Labrinth and London's hyper-eclectic jazz scene. Many thanks to special guest Lloyd Bradley. For more on Bass Culture and Sounds Like London, visit his website at lloydbradley.net. Pieces discussed: George Clinton, Beggar & Co, The Growth of Grime, Blood & Fire's Steve Barrow audio, Bettye Lavette, Bettye Lavette vs. Susan Boyle, Thankful N' Thoughtful, Ike & Tina, Tina Turner, Soulful Queen of Rock'n'roll, Tina Turner roars into Rock Hall, Lowell George, Earl Palmer, Labrinth live and London jazz.

Speaking of his military career Ed says, “leading the fine men and women of the British Army was a true privilege, I learned so much from them and their capacity for selflessness is astonishing. In this VETgirl online veterinary CE podcast, we discuss the feline uroabdomen. Uroabdomen simply refers to free urine within the abdominal cavity, which occurs secondary to a breach anywhere in the urinary tract. In cats, the urinary bladder itself is the most common location for a rupture, and it most commonly occurs secondary to trauma (Stafford). The consequences of a uroabdomen can be severe and life-threatening. Common metabolic disturbances include hyponatremia, hyperkalemia, hyperphosphatemia, metabolic acidosis, and azotemia. In a dog, you may see this laboratory work and think of an Addisonian crisis! Importantly, cats that have a palpable bladder or that are still able to void normally could still have a uroabdomen, so do not rule it out based on those findings alone. When faced with such a case, you brilliant clinicians out there are fully prepared to jump into action and stabilize the patient. However, you may not have the best guidance when providing the owners with evidence-based prognostic information. This is because few studies have actually evaluated prognostic factors in feline uroabdomen cases. So, in a study by Hornsey et al entitled "Factors affecting survival to discharge in 53 cats diagnosed with uroabdomen: a single-centre retrospective analysis," the authors sought to evaluate specific factors that are associated with outcome in cats presenting with a uroabdomen. This was a retrospective study, and medical records were reviewed of cats presenting to a veterinary teaching hospital with a uroabdomen between June 2003 and September 2016. Cats that were euthanized within 2 hours of presentation were excluded. Confirmation of a uroabdomen required either sampling and biochemical analysis of the abdominal fluid or contrast radiography with visualization of fluid escaping the urogenital tract. Extensive information was extracted from the medical records, including patient details, diagnostic results, etiology, treatment information, and case outcome. Note that the authors classified uroabdomen etiology in the following four categories: external trauma (road traffic accident, other blunt trauma, or dog fight), iatrogenic (cystocentesis, urinary catheterization, bladder expression, or post-operative), urethral obstruction, and unknown.

In this episode, I share an everyday burnout conversation with the phenomenal Olga Thompson a.k.a Big Fat Greek Mother. Olga is a comedian, actor, singer, anti-bullying campaigner, mental health advocate and mum to three boys or 'meaty Zorbas', as she affectionately calls them. You may know Olga from her incredibly uplifting, funny and heartwarming Instagram feed - which never fails to hit the spot for sharing the comedy, kindness and compassion we all need when scrolling social media. Back in the summer, I absolutely adored watching Olga's brilliant debut Edinburgh Fringe show, El Greco of Hornsey. She gave her audience such a lovely trip down 80's memory lane with the privilege of peeking behind the curtain of life growing up in a  immigrant Cypriot family running a North London hair salon. Luckily for us, Olga is bringing the El Greco of Hornsey show to London in February 2022. I cannot recommend this show more highly and fingers crossed, she's making it available to stream for those fans living across the pond or unable to make it to London. Olga is a true gift to the world. She trained and worked as a stage actor before moving onto community theatre performing in prisons and young offenders units across the UK. This led her to travel doing missionary work in the middle east, where she taught in orphanages and schools.Olga is one of those women that you feel like you've known for years and instantly feel connected to. In this heartwarming, honest, funny yet vulnerable chat, Olga unpacks some of her experiences, sharing her journey and heart's desires with us.  We get to hear some of the stories and creative processes behind her comedy and fabulous characters - as well as hearing about the difficult times when Olga battled with bullying as a child and navigated past trauma and post-natal depression as a young mum. This conversation is as joyful as they come and left me with aching sides from laughing whilst grinning from ear to ear. It's packed full of encouragement for those currently navigating struggles as well as wisdom for those dealing with overwhelm, exhaustion and burnout. Oh, and at the end, I'm still not sure I've successfully convinced Olga I was recording this from Canada and not from a Greggs in Sheffield. Find Olga at @big_fat_greekmother and @el_greco_of_hornseyEl Greco of Hornsey tickets available hereAlso mentioned in this episode:Kidscape, click here to get help with bullying.@grace_to_restore, helping young women to find emotional stability.Bird by Bird by Anne LamottOlga's podcast chat with Helen Perry on the Just Bloody Do It PodcastFancy a little more burnout chat? Find me on Instagram and Facebook  @flictaylorwritesCheck out my blog at www.flictaylor.comPlease note, this podcast is not intended as medical advice. And the soprano Mary Bevan tells Tom how she created opportunities for performers to make live music outside a church tower in Hornsey. He also hears from the classical music critic Fiona Maddocks, and speaks to programmer, curator & producer, Toks Dada, about how the industry needs to adapt and innovate in order to survive.

In Episode 7 of Series 4, Todd talks with Baroness Lola Young of Hornsey, a cross bench member of the House of Lords currently working to amend the Modern Slavery Act and Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Ethics and Sustainability in Fashion.  00.00 -  01.57 As a member of the House of Lords Baroness Young became interested in ethical fashion due partly to her own lack of knowledge about the fashion industry but also the need to focus on the issue of modern slavery in the fashion industry, and the need to make politicians “sit up and take notice”.  1.57 – 11.09 There is a suggestion that people need to be more aware of where their clothes come from, how they are made and what is happening in the supply chains. First seeds sown by the Rana Plaza disaster in Bangladesh which raised awareness of the possible links between fast, throwaway fashion and elements of modern slavery But Baroness Young says this requires: Moving public attitudes away from notions of cheap throw-away fashion Changing business models in the industry; the example cited is the Zara business model  Demand in the fashion industry is volatile. Zara is set up to respond rapidly to surges and changes in demand, which is why it is so successful. It operates a system of real-time delivery but that often means sub-contracting out production to meet very short deadlines, but with decreasing control over the impact on the supply chain and its implications for forced overtime. Some companies have a supply chain involving 10,000 suppliers.   Fashion trends are constantly changing so there is constant pressure on suppliers to meet very tight production deadlines, which has additional ramifications for the labour force and human rights.  11.09 – 13.00 As a member of the House of Lords Baroness Young believes she is in a good position to influence policy making in the following ways: As a member of parliament she finds it relatively easy to build a rapport with companies to develop dialogue and to help them improve their internal policies towards meeting the conditions of the modern slavery act She has access to government and through that influence on policy making Her work on cross party groups is also influential through the collection of evidence and the publication of reports 13.00 -  14.20 Emphasis placed on the systematic and rigorous collection of evidence rather than reliance on the anecdotal, for example the work of The Rights Lab, and Todd adds: Evidence is hard to collect Victims are hard to find Practices are difficult to observe However, advances in science and technology are now being used in evidence collection.Todd mentions Rights Lab work using satellites to detect modern slavery.   14.20 – end The discussion shifts to consider how sport and modern slavery intersect. Baroness Young finds that there is little realisation within the business of sport of how it can impact on human rights. One of the roles of the All Party Parliamentary Group is to encourage sports organisations to recognise the existence of human rights issues within supply chains to include equality, discrimination, modern slavery and trafficking. Baroness Young notes that: Large sports organisations are notable by their absence at conferences on modern slavery The modern slavery statements of Premier League football clubs are "inadequate"  Football clubs do not have statements on attaining SDG goal 8.7 Todd adds that there is a wide range of activity to investigate. Anecdotally, many branches of sport have human rights issues but hard evidence is in short supply. These include: The manufacture of the football kit The manufacture of the footballs, memorabilia and so on The recruitment of the athletes The Construction of the stadia  All of these involve large and complex supply chains, which are very difficult to monitor.
