Stuart, Florida, has long been called the "Sailfish Capital of the World." With its close proximity to the Gulf Stream and steady supply of sailfish pouring through the area, the name is fitting. To celebrate the town's love of sailfish, marine artist Geoffrey Smith created a 18-foot tall sculpture of a leaping sailfish that rests atop a fountain in the center of town. The Stuart Sailfish has become an icon of sorts for visitors and locals as well as his best known work of art. For Geoffrey, "It seemed like a good way for me to give something back to Stuart, to a community that's been good to me and my family," he said. Raised in California, Geoffrey attended college in Montana and eventually made the move down to Florida. Geoffrey was always drawn to the outdoors. As a boy he'd carve duck decoys, but his path to becoming a full-time artist is a unique one. When you speak to him, you can see his face light up as he discusses the migrations of birds or the motion of a swimming fish. He's a naturalist, who spends most mornings paddling the local waters, finding inspiration all around him. In this podcast, Geoffrey discusses his approach to sculpture and painting. He also explains the ancient process known as lost wax casting that he uses to create his sculptures. For more about Geoffrey Smith's art visit geoffreycsmith.com. AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich is joined by Dr. Geoffrey Smith, a Technical Services Veterinary for Zoetis and member of the AABP ad hoc Cattle Youngstock Committee. If you are interested in joining the Cattle Youngstock Committee, please go to the committee page and click the link to send an email with your request. Include a brief bio statement and your interest in the committee for your nomination to serve on the committee. Smith discusses the key pathophysiologic changes that occurs in calves with diarrhea which can help veterinarians explain to producers what needs addressed with therapy. Calves with diarrhea lose electrolytes, especially sodium, and have an increased amount of D-lactate leading to acidemia. Most cases of neonatal diarrhea are not due to bacterial pathogens and therefore electrolyte therapy to correct dehydration, hyponatremia and acidosis is warranted more often than antimicrobials. Smith suggests an oral electrolyte solution that contains sodium (90-130 mEq/L), an alkalinizing agent (sodium bicarb, acetate or proprionate 50-60mEq/L), glycine which can help sodium absorption in the intestine, and correct osmolality (avoid products with high osmolality in the 700 or higher mOsm/L range). Smith also suggests evaluating the strong ion difference in the products to determine how well it can correct acidosis in the calf by adding the positive ions and subtracting the negative ions for a goal of 50-60 strong ion difference. One common question from producers is if electrolytes can be added to milk. Smith cautions that sodium bicarbonate interferes with milk absorption and the osmolality of the final product can increase the risk for abomasitis if total solids are greater than 14-16. Separating electrolyte therapy from milk feeding by at least 2 hours and continuing electrolyte feeding once a day until the diarrhea is resolved. Smith also discusses the indications for IV fluid therapy to rapidly correct acidosis, dehydration and hyponatremia. This can be done with 4 mL/kg of hypertonic saline solution over 2-3 minutes followed by oral electrolyte therapy. If the calf is unable to suckle or stand, rapid correction of acidosis is most important and can be achieved by IV administration of hypertonic sodium bicarbonate (8.4% of 84 g/L) at a rate of 5-10 mL/kg over 5 minutes. Smith wraps up our conversation by discussing the key points for prevention of calf scours by ensuring a clean environment, proper nutrition, proper vaccination, and an adequate amount of clean, high-quality colostrum immediately after birth. Oral electrolytes can also be fed during the high-risk period for calf diarrhea for a particular farm based on history working with the veterinarian of record. One recommendation is to use the electrolytes that are diluted 1:3 to 1:4 from the treatment dose. AABP members can see previous presentations from Smith on calf diarrhea and fluid therapy by accessing the AABP Online CE portal through the Kansas State Beef Cattle Institute or by downloading the free BCI Mobile Conference App from your device's store.

How can we employ frequencies as a healing art? What exactly is vibrational medicine? How does our body know when and how to heal itself? In this episode of the Hydrate podcast, Geoffrey Smith and I cover the basics of vibrational frequencies and vibrational medicine. While conditions of disease in humans are multi-faceted, we cannot ignore the frequency aspect when treating individuals. Plus, we also talk about how our bodies constantly strive for perfection, as it is intelligent enough to heal itself and to show up as perfect in every way possible when it comes to our health. Geoffrey Smith founded the Atman Clinic in 1995 as a centre of excellence for Holistic Osteopathic Medicine. He offers unique treatments that often combine advanced osteopathic techniques with bio-resonance, vibrational medicine and spiritual psychotherapeutics for the treatment of a wide variety of conditions often succeeding where allopathic medicine may have failed.

Radio 3's veteran jazz broadcaster Geoffrey Smith concludes his series on perceptions of jazz in Britain, told through his own experience as an American settling in the UK nearly 50 years ago. In 1963, the great tenorist Sonny Rollins provided one of the high points of Geoffrey's jazz life in a gig at the Minor Key in Detroit. Fresh from the famous sabbatical that produced his album The Bridge, he was in towering form. Nearly four decades later in October 1999 Rollins came to London for a performance at the Barbican just a few days after the fatal rail crash outside Paddington station. At the start of the concert, he announced he wanted to dedicate it to the people who had died "in hopes that they are somewhere listening". Then he played with unforgettable power and invention - Rollins at his best, than which there is nothing greater in jazz. And in the succeeding years, every time he returned to the Barbican, he produced a concert at that same peerless level, leaving his audience crying for more. Geoffrey Smith reflects on the connection this great American musician forged with his British audience over this series of astonishing performances.
Writer and broadcaster Geoffrey Smith continues his series on the changing perceptions of jazz in Britain, by taking a closer look at celebrated British pianist and composer Stan Tracey. Stan was an abiding presence in Geoffrey's jazz media life, as reviewer and interviewer, and Geoffrey thinks of him not just as a paragon of British jazz, but of jazz in Britain. He was the real thing, a jazz muso to the bone, totally committed to the music. And to him that's what it was. He once told Geoffrey that when he went out to a gig, he didn't say to himself, "I'm going to play some jazz," but "I'm going to play some music." Jazz was his music virtually from the time he heard it, trailing down the stairs from the flat above his family home. His route to jazz keyboard went through an accordion - with which he happily played pass-the-hat gigs in pub - to achieving his own style on piano, following trips to New York as a member of shipboard bands in ‘Geraldo's Navy'. He later became house pianist at Ronnie's Scott's and a musician's favourite - the great Sonny Rollins once asked, "does anyone here realise how good he is?" Geoffrey pays tribute to a British player with an unmistakably quirky, determined personal style.
Writer and broadcaster Geoffrey Smith continues his series on the changing perceptions of jazz in Britain, focusing on the audience. In a culture obsessed with interpreting social signs, the British are fascinated by jazz as style, attitude, behaviour. In the 1920s, jazz was the vogue music of the Bright Young Things: the Prince of Wales himself was fond of sitting in on drums with visiting Americans. On the other end of the political spectrum, the Marxist historian Eric Hobsbawm saw the music as the epitome of working class art. And the fixation with the purity of jazz's folk roots drove the trad jazz boom of the 1950s, a playing style that was once seen as a sign of hip progressive politics. For Geoffrey, all this signifying makes it harder to get through to the music.
Radio 3's veteran jazz broadcaster Geoffrey Smith reflects on the changing perceptions and appreciation of jazz in Britain through his own experience as an American settling in the UK nearly 50 years ago. In this first programme, Geoffrey questions the British term ‘jazzer' and its jokey connotations, which are in sharp contrast to the genre's more serious Stateside identity as American classical music. There, the genealogy and pedigree of the genre is more complex, going back to the rich musical mix of New Orleans. As John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet once said, "We didn't have Bach, Beethoven or Mozart, so we needed to create a music that could do all the things that music can do". But to the British, argues Geoffrey, the essential value of jazz is precisely that it isn't classical. Geoffrey reminds us that the two genres overlap in key expressive features, and that the immortal names in their respective pantheons have much in common.
Geoffrey Smith continues his series on changing perceptions of jazz in Britain, focusing on the visits of two celebrated American artists, Duke Ellington and Bud Freeman. Britain has always been a favourite destination for American jazz stars. It played a key role in the career of Duke Ellington, whose visit here in 1933 generated such enthusiasm among the musical elite that it convinced him to attempt more ambitious musical works. Equally smitten by the mix of British history, culture and style was the legendary Chicago saxophonist Bud Freeman, whose British affinity took roots in the 20s when he and his fellow Chicago jazz pioneers adopted the Prince of Wales as their model for dress and behaviour, and honoured him with their composition, Prince of Wails. Bud settled in London in the late 70s, when Geoffrey became his regular companion for city strolls and got to know him well.

Anyway, join us if you'd like for one of those "Anything Goes" episodes.....(we're not sorry). ===================================================== Our Sponsors: Yorkshire Grit: http://yorkshire-grit.com/ ManCrafting: http://mancraftingtm.com/ Harneal Media: https://harnealmedia.com/ Makers Central: http://www.makerscentral.co.uk/ Pam Harris (Highland Boxes): https://www.youtube.com/user/pamharris101 ================================= This Weeks Shout Outs: MoonshineMetalWorks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1T8uZtHfmJU&t=0s Mr. Geoffrey Smith: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6WYBaFmOQE&fbclid=IwAR3-xj-zPmXnhvpiQj1mKLsHj9IkAB9I3qlI9C-RjPkiwd5Cb_doeW4q2YI Al's Hack Shack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Huqf9CeQkSo&feature=youtu.be&fbclid=IwAR3xmqHD1BuvdBVmn8L4lJ_d4Smp1-HV0q-4fFmhFBJ4nF_Uyvb_CeVoVzc Brett McAfee: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fV26o0PxrUc&feature=youtu.be&fbclid=IwAR0T4Lw9Gat8hrp4hpJcd4fIKu4WFO_4n_OdrIfGToswkfKn4UxQZ_QlONM Marius Hornberger: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCn7lavsPdVGV0qmEEBT6NyA ==================================================== Where to find us: Richard Morley: https://www.youtube.com/user/Trende1978 Jamie Page: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCw3hBDXx_L_EoSFqqmEuWJQ Chris Cute: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpiprfPIJwMk433OC_YdfQw Steve Twydell: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCM0Ui4ri5LLJvopaMT-SR5w ================================= How to contact Makers international: Web Site: http://makersinternationalpodcast.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/makersintl Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/makersinternationalpodcast/?ref=br_rs Itunes: https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/makers-internation-episode-1/id1159519291 Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/allen-robinson-678722792 =================================== Intro Music: “Unrelenting” by Jay Man www.ourmusicbox.com is distributed under the Creative Commons “Attribution CC BY” license https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ http://ourmusicbox.com/
Jann Aldredge-Clanton didn't start out as a reformer. When she was a pre-teen, she almost starved herself to death trying to fit into the culture's feminine mold. In high school she felt inadequate because she never won a beauty crown, even though she graduated at the top of her class. Slowly, she began waking up to her own voice, and became one of the first women ever to be ordained as a Baptist minister in the South. She is the author of several books including hymnbooks in which she writes hymns in honor of the divine feminine. Her books include: Intercultural Ministry: Hope for a Changing World, Earth Transformed with Music! Inclusive Songs for Worship, Inclusive Hymns for Liberating Christians, and Inclusive Hymns for Liberation, Peace, and Justice. Brent Landau of the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Landau and his colleague, Geoffrey Smith have made a discovery of an ancient apocryphal text in which Jesus shares secret revelations to his brother James. Dr. Landau speaks to me about the significance of this discovery. Brent Landau is a lecturer in the Department of Religious Studies. He received his Th.D and M.Div from Harvard University and his chief research is on ancient Christian apocryphal writings. Brent Landau 3:00 - 14:08 Jann Aldredge-Clanton 14:08-54:00
Does God have a continuing special convenant relationship with Jewish people? Should Christians be especially concerned for Israel? Two Christians with very different views tackle this week's subject. Revd Stephen Sizer has written extensively against "Christian Zionism", whereas Geoffrey Smith believes God still has a special relationship with Israel. What do you think? Matthew Chapter 24's "Olivet Discourse" records Jesus saying that his followers will see him "coming on the clouds of the sky with great glory" and that "this generation will not pass away until all these things have happened." Two thousand years later Christians are still waiting for his return. We explore different Christian responses to the apparent expectation of the imminent return of Jesus in the New Testament. What do they make of other end time events such as The Tribulation and The Rapture? Terry Boyle Pastor for Insight For Living in the UK describes his "Dispensationalist" understanding of this and other passages. Dee Dee Warren describes her "Preterist" understanding of the passage and how she arrived at it. Andrew Whyte describes his journey of coming to a liberal view that early Christian writers were mistaken in their expectations. For more on Dee Dee Warren and Preterism see http://www.preteristsite.com/ or www.preteristblog.com where she will be posting extra responses to the programme. Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the gardener and broadcaster Geoffrey Smith. He learnt his craft at his father's knee growing fruit and vegetables for the stately home where he worked. Later he learnt the science of horticulture at college and achieved top marks. He's always maintained the promise he made to himself as a boy: to spend his life outdoors. Except, of course, when he enters a studio for Radio 4's Gardeners' Question Time.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs] Favourite track: Dawn Chorus Book: History of viticulture, with instructions on how to make wine Luxury: Bundle of prunings from a good vineyard so he can plant his own vines
